Good afternoon and big welcome back to the Forest Town Arena for our inaugural fixture in the Northern Premier League, against our previous Northern Counties East rivals Pickering Town. There have been a few changes in personal this season with a few players leaving and new ones joining us. I would like to wish all the players who have left us a successful future with there new clubs and a big warm AFC Mansfield welcome to the new players joining us. We also have a new match reporter joining us as Aaron Curry our previous reporter has been offered a position at Mansfield Town, so it is welcome to Oliver Mooney, who I am sure will do an excellent job.

kit for the new season. We have changed the away strip to an all yellow kit which I am sure you will all like. Any one wishing to purchase the new shirts please see one of the club officials on match days or alternatively e-mail us at afcmansfield@virginmedia.com. Can I thank all our sponsors both new and old for helping to support the club for the new season. We still have plenty of sponsorship opportunities left, especially match day sponsors. Again speak to a club official on match days or e-mail us on afcmansfield@virginmedia.com. On a sad note I would like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Simon Crofts the club steward here at the Arena who tragically passed away recently. A one minutes silence will be observed before today's kick off as a mark of respect.

Rudy’s Thoughts A very warm welcome to all who have come to the Forest Town Arena for our first home game of 2018/19 and our first league game of the season. I would also like to take the opportunity to welcome back Paul Marshall and his Pickering side after coming up to the Evo-Stik League with us. We both enjoyed a thoroughly successful season, and fought in two fantastic contests against each other. I expect our game today to prove just as competitive. I was thoroughly delighted with the way we started our season last weekend, with our 6-0 win at Kirby Muxloe in the FA Cup. It was very pleasing to see our hard work from preseason pay off, and to think that this was not the best we can do gives us plenty of confidence for this season. Kirby are a league below us and the difference in class showed, but today we face a much tougher side in Pickering and we will have to be at our best to beat them. With all the transfers that happened over the summer, it is hard to know what to expect from our opposition today, we remain confident that we can take the three points. On Tuesday night we travel to Spalding United for our first away league game which we can expect to be a tough fixture, before we host Rainworth Miners Welfare in an FA Cup local derby next Saturday. After our perfect start in the FA Cup, we know this is a winnable game but will be careful not to underestimate Rainworth. Let’s pick up where we left off last weekend and continue our fantastic start. Enjoy the game and have a safe journey home.

SATURDAY 11 AUGUST 2016—FA CUP EP ROUND—Att: 83 Referee: Mr Reece Davies Assistants: Mr Steven Davies & Mr Jack Harrison

Bulls rampant in comfortable FA Cup opener By Oliver Mooney AFC Mansfield boss Rudy Funk was delighted with his side’s first competitive outing of the season, as the Bulls cruised to a comfortable 6-0 win at Kirby Muxloe in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. The Bulls gaffer gave credit to a performance he hoped for after what he described as the “perfect” pre-season. “The lads did exactly what they’ve done in preseason,” Funk said after the game at Ratby Lane. “The key factor was today we worked hard, and you’ve seen that probably from minute one. “When you come to teams like Kirby, you never know what to expect, and to be fair in the first 25 minutes they put themselves about, but when you go two or three-nil down it becomes difficult.”

Pressing from the off, AFC ensured that the www.afcmansfield.net

hosts from the tier below would struggle to create chances or even escape their own half.

Lynton Karkach opened the scoring for the Bulls with 20 minutes on the clock, curling beyond the reach of Kirby ‘keeper Brandon Holgate before Brad Wells met Cameron Dear’s looping cross at the far post with a simple header to double the advantage just two minutes later. The game was realistically done and dusted before the half-time whistle when skipper Jimmy Ghaichem’s strike was parried into the path of Nick Guest, who only needed to tap home into a half-empty net. A red card for Aaron Love for a stamp on Jonny Pugh on the hour mark condemned Kirby to a long and painful second half, and Karkach completed a well-earned brace in the moments which followed with a brilliant turn-and-run into the box before firing into the bottom corner from a tight angle. Cameron Dear was able to notch AFC’s fifth later on, rewarding his impressive attacking performance by hammering home on the end of an inch-perfect pass from Wells.

THE NEW SEASON THERE was a certain relief walking out of NLP Towers at 9:30pm last Saturday night. Another summer had been negotiated, August is here and competitive football is finally back. The off-season is a busy one for us as we aim to keep producing engaging articles people will enjoy reading and, I hope, we have once again managed to do that. While there might not be a full programme of matches for a few weeks, there’s always something going on in Non-League football once the regular season finishes at the end of April. The play-offs get into full swing immediately, then there’s all the finals to cover, restructuring, league constitutions, league constitutions part two, transfers, fixtures, FA Cup, Trophy and Vase draws and, eventually, pre-season matches. But there’s nothing quite like that first Saturday of the new campaign. Where everyone turns up, level on points, full of hope and ambition, with fans wondering, ‘Could this be our year?’

and the well-told tale of Jamie Vardy. Who knows where the players kicking off over the coming weeks will end up in a few years’ time. That’s one of the exciting parts of this time of year. It’s all ahead of us now. The surprises, the shocks, the Cup runs – over the coming nine months stories and memories will unfold for everyone. We’ll enjoy covering every kick. Good luck! SIN BINS Could we see the use of Sin Bins throughout the Non-League Pyramid in the future? Last season the FA trialled the punishment across 31 leagues at various levels and this year that will be expanded with the plan for every Step 7 and below league to use them from 2019-20. The FA chose to use sin bins solely for dissent. Did you know that one in four yellow cards is given for that offence? And last season’s Pilot showed a significant reduction of 38 per cent. It seems to be tackling the problem.

The hope is sin bins will change behaviour because it will have an immediate impact. Backchat will see a player spend 10 minutes on the sidelines (eight New players have been signed, stands have had a minutes for games of 80 minutes or less) and will lick of paint and there’s grass in all the goalmouths – harm the team straightaway, rather than receive a although this year much of it will be parched! AFC Mansfield were formed in 2012 and have signed a 10 year deal to play at Forest Town Arena. The club joined the non-league pyramid in The Central Midlands Football League. The club are a community club with the aim of giving something back to the community. The club’s nickname is ‘The Bulls’ and the original management team were Micky Taylor, Doug Etches and Graeme Rodger. AFC Mansfield competed on four fronts in the 2012-13 season and came so close to winning the lot in their first season. Despite losing just 2 games all season and amassing 176 goals for and just 20 against 'The Bulls' had to settle for runners-up to Dronfield Town who put in an amazing league run dropping just 5 points all season. Better news came in the Notts Intermediate Cup where 'The Bulls' took the trophy with a 20 win at Eastwood Town's ground against Beeston AFC. This was AFC's first ever silverware.

the League Cup at Alfreton Town's ground but with weary legs and still league games to play it was a game too far for the club. After having two players sent off for 2nd bookable offences AFC eventually conceded an injury time goal to Clifton All Whites who lifted the cup after being runners-up last season, that as it turned out was an omen! For the 2013-14 season the club entered the FA Vase and were eventually knocked out in the 2nd Round by Step 5 side Huntingdon Town after a replay. The club further expanded by starting an U19 side and also taking on U7 boys, U10 boys, U11 boys, U15 boys and girls sides and an U16 boys team for the 2013-14 season. The 2013-14 season bought more success, the 1st team were crowned CML North Division Champions and completed the double with a win over Thorne Colliery in The League Challenge Cup. Once again the treble eluded them when they went down 2-1 to Bulwell FC in the Floodlit Cup Final. Promotion was achieved when AFC Mansfield were accepted into The ToolStation Northern Counties East League for the 2014-15 season. The club further extended its community based teams and had 13 teams competing in the 2014 -15 season from U9’s to the 1st Team. Having had Micky Taylor since formation the

This success was quickly followed up by a superb win in The Floodlit Cup Final at Sutton Town's ground against a physical and competitive Newark Town. 'The Bulls' ran out 4 -1 winners on the night and added another trophy to the cabinet. 'The Bulls' were hoping to make it a treble with

club were forced to look for another manager 10 games into the season when Micky stepped down. Dean Short was appointed with promotion still the ultimate goal. 10 points were dropped in 7 games and Short’s stay was, well, short. The directors of the club secured the services of Rudy Funk midway through the season. A creditable 7th place finish in their first season in the NCEL was achieved. A last 16 place in the FA Vase and a Semi-Final place in the League Cup made it a good season for The Bulls. The 2015-16 season began with an 11 game unbeaten run in the league, promotion was the priority and as the season went on any cup competition took a back seat. Always in the top 4 throughout the season a poor January saw The Bulls drop 11 points and allowed Hemsworth MW the chance to pull away. With an automatic spot still to play for AFC Mansfield went on an 11 game unbeaten run to finish as they had started and claim the promotion they had been planning for since the first game of the season.

2016-17 season and the club finished 7th in its 1st season at step 5. Manager Rudy Funk was given an extension to his contract for another 2 seasons in January 2017. He and assistant Mark Ward had recruited well for the coming season and the anticipation was high. 2017-18 started with The Bulls winning The Toolstation Charity Cup, 3-2 away against Street FC from the Toolstation Western League. Another great run in The FA Cup with The Bulls reaching the 3rd Qualifying round again.

Narrowly beaten by Conference side Boston United in front of a record home crowd of 613. Major drama at the end of the season, the club thought it had been edged out of promotion on goal difference after Pontefract and Pickering were given an extra week to finish their fixtures due to the appalling weather throughout the season. Everybody was gearing up for another season in the NCEL when a week later The Bulls were Manager Rudy Funk further strengthened the offered a place at Step 4 after Andover Town squad for the club’s first season at step 5 and decided to drop out of that level. everybody at the club were looking forward to Again, Rudy and Mark have prepared well for the coming season, the clubs 1st at Step 4 and the challenge. rd The 3 Qualifying Round of the FA cup and the everybody is looking forward to new grounds and making new friends. last 32 of The FA Vase were achieved in the www.afcmansfield.net

Goalkeeper Charlie Andrew - Charlie Andrew is the Hull U23 goalkeeper. Charlie is 18 years of age and has bags of potential. He was an instrumental part of promotion to the EVO-STIK League with some vital saves. He is an excellent shot stopper and commands his box excellently. Charlie has re-joined the Pikes for 2018-19 season on a season long loan. Defenders Jamie Barkaway – Jamie is tall and commanding central defender. Jamie played for Dringhouses in the York Premier Division last season and impressed at Pickering during pre-season. He will be a good asset to the Pikes squad adding extra depth in the back line and he will prove a danger from corners because of his height and his ability to win headers. Frank Belt - Frank is a vastly experienced footballer in the non-league game having spells at many local clubs to the Pikes coming from Hull City's Academy. Frank has also been with Pickering before moving to New Zealand to play for Waitakere City. Frank's favoured position is right back as he is a good solid defender, but he also likes to push forward so he can also play out wide. George Bissett - George plays a big part in Pickering's defence. He is versatile and can play at either right back or centre back. ‘Biss’ is a good header of the ball and excels when players are running at him. He is also very dangerous from corners in the attacking half because of the number of headers he wins. George signed from Tadcaster Albion in July 2015 and has been an ever-present member of the defence during last season. Eddie Cass – Eddie is a well accomplished centre back who is good in the air and is a tough, strong tackler. He is very organised at the back and shows good leadership qualities, that will only improve the back line. Eddie signed for Darlington at the start of the season but has failed to get any minutes under his belt after his return from America. Previously, ‘Cass’ has played for both Pickering Town and Bridlington Town before his move out to America, to play for Rocky Mountain College. Joe Danby - Joe is a versatile player who is mostly favoured at left back, although he is a very good player

going forward. He is also very good at defending and has a very good passing ability, especially with his left foot. Joe also takes free kick from short range and has the ability to get the ball up and over the wall from close distance. He scored 14 goals last season which were vital as he scored 2 goals late in the season, which the Pikes would have not been promoted without. Joe Dunnett – Joe is a versatile member of the squad who can play at left back or in the centre of midfield. He was part of the i2i Academy and is now a squad player with Pikes, when he is back from University. Joe has a good passing range and is a tough tackler. Niall Tilsley - Niall is currently the club captain who is a great leader at the back.
