@AFCMANSFIELD

Good evening everyone and a big welcome to the players officials and supporters from Maltby Main for tonight’s Northern Counties East League Premier game. Our paths crossed earlier in the season and we were lucky enough to run out winners on penalties at Muglet Lane in the League Cup. It was a tough competitive game and we expect the same tonight. On Saturday we fell to an injury time winner from Bridlington Town, they will have a say in the final promotion places but have some catching up to do. In fairness had we taken our chances at specific times we would have won the game but we didn’t and with the games coming thick and fast there is no time to dwell on it.

Dunkirk, Heanor Town and Sherwood Colliery look like being our opponents next year.

Our end of season celebration will be on Saturday 25 April at The Liberty Club in Mansfield. It should have We are looking to finish as high up been after our last game but we have the league as possible with a view to a final fixture on the following improving next season. Tuesday Vs Thackley at home. At the moment which league we will Enjoy the game! be in is still not decided. It will most likely be the new United Counties North step 5 league. I would like to welcome all from Maltby Main for tonight’s game. We had a thrilling League Cup tie up at Muglet Lane and were lucky enough to edge it on penalties. Tonight will be a similar hard fought battle between 2 good sides. On Saturday we fell to an injury time goal which was not deserved but shows you have to keep your concentration for the full 90 minutes. Missed chances and stonewall penalties not given, just another Saturday in football. The players were gutted at the end and Bridlington celebrated like they had won a cup final which shows how much beating us meant to them. They had to really put in a shift to get the points and we will take that kind of work-rate into tonight’s game. We cant dwell too much on Saturday as the games are coming

www.afcmansfield.net

Saturday then midweek for the next 4 weeks at least. Ross Duggan scored a superb goal and we should have had a couple more. The squad is looking strong and there is real competition for places. Maltby are in good form so the game will be tough for both sets of players.

Enjoy the game.

A FEW years back, a manager - who will remain nameless - of a then-Conference club finished giving his post-match interview. His side had just lost an FA Trophy quarter-final. He’d said all the things you’d expect. Disappointed that his side had been below par, frustrated at the goals they’d conceded and rued the missed opportunity of a trip to Wembley.

Then, after checking the assembled press had got what they needed and all dictaphones were off, he cheered, ‘I’m so glad we’re out!’

Manager Keith Rowland couldn’t have been prouder of his players and spoke about how it has helped their league form. Now their focus returns to winning promotion from the BetVictor Isthmian Division One North. For Halesowen the journey, remarkably, continues. An extra-time win against Barnet keeps their dream alive and is conjuring memories of their famous past when they were a big Non-League hitter in the 70s and 80s. No one would have called the Yeltz reaching the final four. But 13 games later - including replays Paul Smith’s side are a two-legged semi-final away from reaching Wembley.

The original football club was formed in 1916 as Maltby Main FC (the local colliery). All players were employed at the nearby pit - indeed, a good footballer was often guaranteed employment at the colliery so he could represent the football club! The original Maltby Main FC was disbanded in 1965. Maltby Miners Welfare FC was formed in 1970 and was the football section of the Miners Welfare. The club played in the Sheffield Senior League until 1972, when they joined the old Yorkshire League and then the Northern Counties East League formed from the merger of the Yorkshire & Midland Leagues. The club began their NCEL life in Division One (South) but the installation of floodlights earned a place in the Premier Division for the 1990/91 season, a very creditable sixth position being attained having won 10 and drawing 2 of the fifteen home games. Success continued during what was to become the 4 year reign as manager of Colin Walker, the ex-Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers and New Zealand player, who took the club from the Northern Counties East First to the Premier Division where they finished 4th and won the President's Cup in his final season in charge (1992-93). Colin then left to manage Barnsley's Youth team. In season 1993/94, under the guidance of new player-manager Gary Waller, the Miners briefly headed the table and remained strong championship contenders until the final month of the season when they fell away to finish 7th. Gary resigned because of work commitments just before the start of the 1994/95 season, with his assistant, Richard Moon taking over the helm. The 1995-96 season was difficult with injuries and suspensions plaguing the manager and following a good Easter period, all the remaining fixtures ended in defeat, the club ending the season in its lowest ever Premier Division position of next-to-bottom. The club retained its Premier Division status only because of the resignation from the Northern Counties East League of Goole Town. Following the split from the Miners Welfare in mid-1996, the club decided to revert to its former name of Maltby Main FC, although they continue

PAGE 20

to play on the Welfare ground at Muglet Lane. Following the resignation of Richard Moon, Dave McCarthy was appointed to the vacant position. Dave was manager at Hallam and formerly assistant at Parkgate. His playing career includes spells at Crewe Alexandra, abroad in Finland, New Zealand and Australia, and nonleague football with Ilkeston Town, Worksop Town and Alfreton Town. After a season of consolidation and 14th place, the 1997/98 season saw the Miners top the Premier Division for much of the mid-season period before slipping back to finish in a creditable 6th position. McCarthy was lured away to take over as manager at Unibond League Alfreton Town and former Rotherham United and Maltby player, Steve Fleetwood, was appointed manager in the close season, with Bob Haddrell as his assistant. The 1998/1999 season was difficult and, despite a successful start and a place in the President's Cup Semi-finals, relegation was avoided only on goal difference and Steve resigned in the close season because of work commitments which took him out of the country for long periods. Glyn Kenny moved from Parkgate to take over the reigns, along with his assistant, Glyn Reeves, coach Les Harris and several of the previous season's Parkgate squad and, with several promising youngsters coming through the ranks of the very strong junior sides, hopes were high for an improvement in fortunes. After an uncertain start, the 1999/2000 season proved to be one of consolidation and, despite goalscoring problems, the team finished the season strong in defence and midfield only for the NCEL to relegate the club for not being able to fund hardstanding around the pitch for the new season. This scandalous decision was stubbornly adhered to by the league despite the fact that Maltby Miners Welfare, in close season, spent £¼ million on new dressing room and hospitality facilities which were arguably the best in the league. If, instead, the relatively paltry sum of £6000 had been spent on hard standing and a new portakabin for hospitality, the club would have remained in the Premier Division with the players having to continue to use damp overcrowded changing facilities - such is the logic of football authorities!

league victory, Paul resigned and the board moved swiftly to appoint Russ Eagle as team manager. Despite defeats in his first three matches, Russ managed to turn things around and with only 5 defeats in the last 20 fixtures, Main finished a creditable 9th. Much hard work was put in the close season to bring Muglet Lane up to standard for the 2001/2002 season. The required hard standing was laid and toilets installed in the new dressing rooms in order that the club retain its league status, but this took a huge financial toll on the club. With all the previous season’s players retained, the club and its supporters were hoping for better things with promotion back to the Premier Division but, after a poor start, Russ Eagle left the club and Wilf Race and Vinnie Brady were put in charge of team affairs. Wilf had left Parkgate a month before Eagle’s departure from Muglet Lane, but several players followed him to Maltby and a spectacular run of form saw The Miners rise, in three months, from next to bottom to head the Division One table. The poor start to the season, however, eventually told and, following an indifferent run in, the club finished in 6th position. Wilf Race stunned the club in June 2002 with a shock resignation, but the board moved quickly to appoint former player Mark Smith as team manager, with Vinnie Brady staying on as Assistant Manager. Despite a promising start with a win at Tadcaster Albion on the first day of the 2002/03 season, several defeats, some heavy, followed and, following Vinnie’s departure back to Parkgate, Mark Smith resigned after only a few weeks in charge. Chairman, Gary Kitching took over team affairs on a temporary basis but was very successful two wins and a draw in his three matches at the helm before the former Rotherham United, Doncaster Rovers and Altrincham midfielder, Shaun Goodwin was chosen as new manager from a host of applicants with Bryn Webster as his assistant. League results were disappointing but the club did reach the semi-final of the Sheffield Senior Cup, narrowly losing 2-1 to Doncaster Rovers at Belle Vue. Hopes were high that 2003-04 would see Main challenging for a return to the Premier Division and these hopes were justified as Shaun and Bryn made subtle changes to the side and made it one to be feared as they clinched the second promotion spot

With relegation came the resignation of the management team after only one season in charge and Paul Cavell and Glen Morris took over. Early season form was poor and, with Main rooted to the foot of Division One, with only one Shaun’s reign as Manager in the Premier

Division was relatively short-lived as, despite a good run in the FA Cup, the team struggled and Wilf Race returned to the club and took over in early January 2005. Early results were disappointing but Wilf quickly turned things around and the side became a match for anyone in the division, despite losing many key players to wealthier clubs, finishing 8 points clear of relegation. Wilf then took a backseat role in the club and former Sheffield United player, Sean Kay, who has a wealth of coaching experience, particularly at Rotherham United, took the reigns for the 2006/2007 campaign. Main surprised everyone (even themselves) as they dominated the Premier Division for the first half of the season, putting all the division’s “big spenders” to shame before falling away to finish 10th as injuries and suspensions took their toll on a small squad of players. Despite high hopes of a good 2007-2008 campaign and promotion aspirations from the management team, the season was a real letdown for the club. With superb sponsorship from Hargreaves, the new Maltby Colliery owners, all involved were looking forward to a successful season but it was not to be. Sean Kay resigned in December following a string of poor results and Robbie Barron took over the reigns until the end of the season. Most of the playing squad left with Kay but Robbie assembled a new squad in record time which was good enough to keep the club in the top flight. Steve Adams came from Stocksbridge PS to take the helm for 2008-2009 and enjoyed moderate success, with the side finishing 12th in 2008-09, 16th in 2009-10 and 11th in 2010-11, but struggled in 2011-12 and finished in 18th position, one place and 4 points above a relegation place. Steve resigned before the 20011-12 season and the club appointed Chris Dunn as manager, assisted by Andy Carney and Gary Middleton, who remained with the club from the Steve Adams era. Chris had achieved success managing in local football and, after a shaky start, the team did well and finished a creditable 14th place. Unfortunately, Chris resigned because of work commitments after only one season in charge and the club was once again facing a pre-season management crisis. Then, in stepped local businessman, Chris Ducker to take the reigns as club chairman and he moved swiftly to appoint Brian Cusworth and

www.afcmansfield.net

Paul Staniforth as joint player-managers, with Wilf Race returning to the club as Director of Football. However, after gaining only one victory in their first 9 games, Mick Norbury was appointed manager with Brian and Paul reverting to a purely playing role and Wilf Race switching to Assistant Manager. The change proved fruitful with good wins at Lincoln, Nostell and Liversedge with Brian resuming his customary free-scoring touch with 7 goals in the ensuing 5 games. Despite suffering a 12 point deduction for fielding a player under contract with a club higher in the pyramid, the team finished a creditable 15th and were looking forward to an enjoyable 2014-15 NCEL season. However, the season proved to be somewhat of a disappointment. Wilf Race assumed the role of club Chairman, after the departure of Mark Ducker, with the stated aim of maintaining our Premier Division status, with a mid-table position the goal. Main found themselves in 7th position in mid September but results declined thereafter and, following the resignation of Mick Norbury towards the end of the campaign, finished in 19th place, one spot above but 12 points clear of the relegation zone. Spencer Fearn and Mark Askwith were appointed joint managers for 2015-16 with former player Andy Tomlinson as 1st Team Coach, John Stancliffe as goalkeeping coach and Katie Johnson as fitness coach. Spencer is no stranger to football having owned East Stirling FC and being vice–chairman of Stockport County. He has been coaching and working through his coaching badges and Mark has been managing locally for ten years since retiring from playing football and has achieved seven promotions in this time. Both of the Co-Managers have a long association and were schoolboys together at Sheffield United. Under the new regime, last season (the club’s centenary year) was a revelation, with Main punching well above their weight, finishing in 7th position, their highest for 15 years, and enjoying a good run in both the FA Cup and Vase. Under their stewardship the structure of the club is also set to improve further this term, with an under 21’s side led by Andy King. The link up with the North of East England Academy starts this season for scholars who will play in the Conference Youth Alliance and FA Youth Cup. The reserve team will now play in the Sheffield County Senior League. The first half of 2016-17 started with Main facing an unprecedented number of injuries to first choice players and the club had early exits in all

AFCMANSFIELD

cup competitions. The second half of the season was much improved as players returned and a 14th place finish was comfortably achieved. Spencer Fearn shocked the club by resigning in the close season to take up the management of Frickley Athletic and Jordan Hall was installed as manager but his tenure only lasted 60 days before he resigned through work commitments. The club moved swiftly to bring back former joint manager, Mark Askwith, along with Scott Mason and John Crossland, who have very successful in the local Sunday league particularly with The Joker over the last few years, having won every trophy available including the very prestigious Hallamshire Sunday Cup. They did an unprecedented quadruple last season and then won a fifth trophy at the weekend by beating the Sunday league champions from Humberside/ East Yorkshire. The squad confounded everyone with some scintillating performances and results and finished 5th in the Premier Division, the highest since 1992/93. Mark Askwith resigned his position because of work commitments but Louis Axcell joined the management team from Handsworth Parramore to work alongside Scott Mason and John Crossland for the 2018-19 season. The season proved to be almost a repeat of 2017-18 with a sixth place finish, but the notable event during the season was the live screening by the BBC of Main’s home FA Cup 1st Round Qualifying tie against Frickley Athletic. Despite a narrow 2-1 defeat, Main acquitted themselves well against their NPL opponents as Muglet Lane took centre stage on TV. Scott and the rest of the management team signed up for another season and recruited wisely during the summer. With more than the usual promotion spots available, Main, along with other clubs in the division, are hoping to push for a coveted place in the Northern Premier League for the first time in their long history but early results have not gone to plan and Main parted company with Scott in October 2019, Louis Axcell stepping up to take charge at least until the end of the season.

AFC Mansfield were formed in 2012 and have signed a 10 year deal to play at Forest Town. The club joined the nonleague pyramid in The Central Midlands Football League. The club are a community club with the aim of giving something back to the community. The club’s nickname is ‘The Bulls’ and the original management team were Micky Taylor, Doug Etches and Graeme Rodger. AFC Mansfield competed on four fronts in the 2012-13 season and came so close to winning the lot in their first season. Despite losing just 2 games all season and amassing 176 goals for and just 20 against 'The Bulls' had to settle for runners-up to Dronfield Town who put in an amazing league run dropping just 5 points all season. Better news came in the Notts Intermediate Cup where 'The Bulls' took the trophy with a 2-0 win at Eastwood Town's ground against Beeston AFC. This was AFC's first ever silverware. This success was quickly followed up by a superb win in The Floodlit Cup Final at Sutton Town's ground against a physical and competitive Newark Town. 'The Bulls' ran out 4-1 winners on the night and added another trophy to the cabinet. 'The Bulls' were hoping to make it a treble with the League Cup at Alfreton Town's ground but with weary legs and still league games to play it was a game too far for the club. After having two players sent off for 2nd bookable offences AFC eventually conceded an injury time goal to Clifton All Whites who lifted the cup after being runners-up last season, that as it turned out was an omen! For the 2013-14 season the club entered the FA Vase and were eventually knocked out in the 2nd Round by Step 5 side Huntingdon Town after a replay. The club further expanded by starting an U19 side and also taking on U7 boys, U10 boys, U11 boys, U15 boys and girls sides and an U16 boys team for the 2013-14 season. The 2013-14 season bought more success, the 1st team were crowned CML North Division Champions and completed the double with a win over Thorne Colliery in The League Challenge Cup. Once again the treble eluded them when they went down 21 to Bulwell FC in the Floodlit Cup Final. Promotion was achieved when AFC Mansfield were accepted into The ToolStation Northern Counties East League for the 2014-15 season. The club further extended its community based teams and had 13 teams competing in the 2014-15 season from U9’s to the 1st Team. Having had Micky Taylor since formation the club were forced to look for another manager 10 games into the season when Micky stepped down. Dean Short was appointed with promotion still the ultimate goal. 10 points were dropped in 7 games and Short’s

PAGE 24

www.afcmansfield.net

stay was, well, short. The directors of the club secured the services of Rudy Funk midway through the season. A creditable 7th place finish in their first season in the NCEL was achieved. A last 16 place in the FA Vase and a Semi-Final place in the League Cup made it a good season for The Bulls. The 2015-16 season began with an 11 game unbeaten run in the league, promotion was the priority and as the season went on any cup competition took a back seat. Always in the top 4 throughout the season a poor January saw The Bulls drop 11 points and allowed Hemsworth MW the chance to pull away. With an automatic spot still to play for AFC Mansfield went on an 11 game unbeaten run to finish as they had started and claim the promotion they had been planning for since the first game of the season. Manager Rudy Funk further strengthened the squad for the club’s first season at step 5 and everybody at the club are looking forward to the challenge. The 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA cup and the last 32 of The FA Vase were achieved in the 2016-17 season and the club finished 7th in its 1st season at step 5. Manager Rudy Funk was given an extension to his contract for another 2 seasons in January 2017. He and assistant Mark Ward had recruited well for the coming season and the anticipation was high. 2017-18 started with The Bulls winning The Toolstation Charity Cup, 3-2 away against Street FC from the Toolstation Western League. Another great run in The FA Cup with The Bulls reaching the 3rd Qualifying round again. Narrowly beaten by Conference side Boston United in front of a record home crowd of 613. Major drama at the end of the season, the club thought it had been edged out of promotion on goal difference after Pontefract and Pickering were given an extra week to finish their fixtures due to the appalling weather throughout the season. Everybody was gearing up for another season in the NCEL when a week later The Bulls were offered a place at Step 4 after Andover Town decided to drop out of that level. Again, Rudy and Mark prepared well for the coming season, the clubs 1st at Step 4. Rudy unfortunately parted with the club in January and Mark Ward was tasked with seeing the season out. He secured the help of Jon Froggatt as his player/assistant manager. However, this partnership was short-lived and the duo left at the end of the season. The Bulls had many applicants for the vacant job and after an extensive process the board appointed Matt Chatfield to the role. Matt bought in Paul Stancliffe and Andy Morris as his management team and set about putting a squad together for the 2019-20 season.

HEARTBREAK IN INJURY TIME Matt Chatfield's Mansfield suffered injury-time heartbreak as Bridlington came from behind to snatch all three points at the Forest Town Arena. The Bulls had led the tie through a sensational early wondergoal from Ross Duggan, but the Seasiders levelled through Niah Payne before a costly error allowed Billy Logan to tap home a very late winner. AFC could have been ahead with not even a minute played, but Ross Duggan believed himself to be on the wrong side of the Bridlington back line after Jon D'Laryea's killer ball would have seen the striker clean through. But the league's top-scorer soon repaid his team with a contender for the goal of the season, as he smashed a 30-yard rocket off James Hitchcock's crossbar. It then appeared Duggan had inspired a few of his team mates - five minutes later defender Cameron Hough fancied his chances from a similar position but volleyed well over. It was a game that Bridlington, being within touching distance of the top three, had down as a must-win, and the Seasiders began to mount immense pressure on the Bulls back four. Billy Logan had the first of a series of chances, finding space on the edge of the area before seeing his low effort held by Hugo Warhurst. Bridlington top-scorer Joe McFayden was the next to test the AFC stopper, sending a half-volley straight at Warhurst after following up on his own corner. The visitors felt like a goal was on the way with countless corners whilst AFC were limited mostly to counter-attacks, and Chris Jenkinson came inches away from a leveller as he saw his back-post header cleared off the line. Tom Waudby had a similar chance as the half drew to a close, as his header was flicked over the crossbar for a second consecutive corner. The second half began in just as lively a fashion, and

PAGE 32

www.afcmansfield.net

the Seasiders would have drawn level if one of their own bodies wasn't in the way of a close-range attempt. The visitors then finally found a way through, as despite Hugo Warhurst's brilliant save to tip McFayden's fierce strike wide, Niah Payne pounced only seconds later to fire home the equaliser from 15 yards. With their tails up, Bridlington sensed they could complete the turnaround and almost did so when Devonte Newman-Morton's wicked in-swinging cross was glanced narrowly wide by Logan. Mansfield continued to contest for all the points, though, and Luke Walker came close to regaining the lead when he cut inside his marker and forced Hitchcock to parry his powerful low drive which was destined for the far corner. Whilst legs began to tire, the tie showed no signs of slowing down - Duggan almost squeezed the ball into the near top corner from inside the penalty area before Warhurst pulled off another stupendous save to palm Newman-Morton's rifled effort wide of his far post. With seven minutes of normal time to play, Tom Waudby almost scored a screamer of his own as the midfielder spotted Warhurst off his line but struck the crossbar from 40 yards out. As the game was drawing to a close, it could have been either side who would come out on top eventually - substitute Gavin King had the biggest chance of them all for the Bulls on 89 minutes, firing over an empty net from just yards out after Duggan squared past Hitchcock. The Seasiders then punished their hosts just as the game entered injury time, as Billy Logan pounced on a defensive mistake in the penalty area and tapped home to snatch the points. The loss denied AFC a third win on the bounce, but Matt Chatfield's side have the chance to return to winning ways on Tuesday night when Maltby Main visit the Forest Town Arena.
