@AFCMANSFIELD
Good afternoon everyone
and a big AFC Mansfield welcome to the player officials and supporters from Bridlington Town for this afternoons Northern Counties East fixture. Its always a pleasure to see Bridlington chairman Pete Smurthwaite and its congratulations to him and his club for getting the funding to upgrade the facilities at their ground. Unfortunately the weather beat us last Saturday with the postponement of our fixture against Thackley, here at the Arena, there was no way the game could have been played with standing water all over the pitch. In the evening we held our race night and the event was enjoyed by everyone who attended and we raised approximately ÂŁ850.00 for the club. I was disappointed with the number of people who attended but we will be holding one again next year with a slightly different format. As to on the field matters we managed to get the monkey off our back with a 2-0 win away at Albion Sports on Wednesday, in an excellent all round team www.afcmansfield.net

display. We now enter a very busy period of games with 8 games scheduled for March, weather permitting and we will be looking to get as many points as we can starting today. For your diaries we also have another game here at the arena when we entertain Maltby Main on Tuesday night with a 7-45pm KO
Enjoy the game!

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all from Bridlington Town for todays game. After having 2 games called off for the weather, 1 at home and 1 away it was nice to get back out on the pitch. Conditions at Albion Sports on Wednesday night weren't ideal. It was a bit bobbly and obviously soft with the recent rains. With a barebones side I think we won the game comfortably, Hugo didn’t really have too many to save and although they pressed on in the 2nd half we dealt with anything that came our way. It was also nice to see a couple of different names on the score sheet. I would obviously like Duggs to keep on scoring but when he doesn’t it is nice to see others step up. A couple of months ago this would have ended 1-1, so it shows how far we have come and how much we have improved. It helps with the signings we have made, another 2 new starts with Jon D’Laryea coming in and making an impact on his return and Harley Kozluk coming off the bench

and showing some potential. We were 5 players short on Wednesday and that shows we now have a squad that wants to keep the shirts they are given. It makes it difficult to pick the next starting XI with players coming back, but it is a nice problem for a manager. Todays game will be difficult, another side challenging for promotion and also chance to make amends for the 1-0 defeat at Bridlington earlier in the season. But we are looking forward to it.
Enjoy the game.

Last week, The Non-League Paper told the story of Scott Rickards' resignation as manager of Atherstone Town.
It pains me to say it but I could count on one hand the number of times this season that there hasn't been a racist incident alleged at Nothing unusual in that you might think but a Non-League ground somewhere across the UK on a Saturday afternoon. That is a Scott's departure from the Adders – just very sad indictment and something must be days before the biggest game of his fledgling management career – has huge far done. It's a football problem. Unfortunately, though, there still doesn't -reaching implications. appear to be an obvious solution to solving Rookie boss Scott decided to call time on the problem once and for all. his tenure at Sheepy Road following allegations of racist abuse from supporters Matches have been abandoned, players during the recent Midlands League Division have walked off the pitch and clubs have imposed banning orders and even One clash with Stafford Town. prosecutions in some cases. It was the third week running that such accusations had been made against Atherstone fans so, a little under a fortnight before the club's crunch FA Vase quarterfinal with Consett, Scott decided he had seen and heard enough. It was time to make a stand.
Yet, here we are, two months into 2020 for goodness sake and we're still trying to find ways of tackling a problem which has permeated English football since the dark days of the 1970s. Nearly 50 years! Doesn't seem possible, does it?
I have to say I felt sorry for Adders chairman Brian Henney. He commended Scott for his stance – he had to really - but denied that the club had a racism problem in its ranks.
For now, we, the supporter, can play our part in eradicating the problem by reporting any suspected abuse to a nearest steward, club employee or even police officer. Scott Rickards made a stand , so let's follow suit and form a united front to stamp out racism from our football grounds.
Sadly, though, Brian was just as aware as I was that football as a whole - from Premier League down to the Dog & Duck – does have a widespread problem which is only getting worse.. PAGE 10

Bridlington Town AFC was formed in their own right on 11th June 1920. They recruited players from the disbanded Bridlington Discharged Sailors and Soldiers Football Club and formed a second team from The Bridlington Grammar School Old Boys. The first team were entered into the 1st division of the East Riding County League with the second team being entered into the Hull Amateur League 1st Division. In their first season Bridlington Town AFC won the East Riding Senior Cup 2-1 vs. Gilberdyke played at Anlaby Road Hull, and reached fifth place in the League. Town went on to win the East Riding Cup the following 2 seasons and won the 1st Division title on three consecutive seasons 1921-22,1922-23 and 192324.

The following year Town were finalists at Wembley for the first time in the F.A.Vase, in front of a crowd of 7,932, the game finishing 0 - 0, the only ever Wembley final to be goalless, with Yeading winning the replay 1 - 0 at Elland Road 9 days later.
During the intervening period between the final and the replay Town had to play Hull City in defence of the East Riding Senior Cup, the League Cup against Ossett Town and a league game. During this period Ken Richardson had joined the club as President and was instrumental in assisting the club with the necessary finance to develop the ground by building a new stand, clubhouse, turnstiles and floodlights. Towns 3rd season back in the NCEL saw an 18 game unbeaten run lift Town to finish Division One Runners Up and gained promotion to the Premier Division. The 2002 - 2003 season started with a continuation of the good form and 14 straight wins in all competitions. Town also reached the 4th Qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing away at Conference side Southport, and the 1/4 final of the Vase, losing away at League rivals and eventual Vase winners Brigg Town. Another incredible run of league form saw Town lose only one of the last 26 games and the Club finished as Champions with a fantastic 20 point winning margin to gain promotion to the Unibond League for 2003 - 2004. Winter postponements and the cup success saw Town playing three games each week through March and April and the heavy toll caused Town to "sacrifice" the cup success for the league title. To ensure promotion, Gary Wilkinson of Wilkinson Caravans, the main sponsor, also secured the purchase of Bridlington Town AFC Ltd from the former owners thus ensuring the future of the club. The season in the Unibond Division One saw injuries and suspensions take their toll in the second half of the season but the club finished in 11th place to complete A third successive promotion, this time to the Unibond Premier Division, that was due to the reorganisation of the league and meant the new club had returned to the status held by the former club when they folded, and had achieved this in just ten seasons. Gary Wilkinson was unable to continue with the club any longer due to financial constraints, and Pete Smurthwaite, of PBS Construction, bought the club. and after the resignation of Billy Heath Pete also has a spell as Town Manager but brought in Paul Marshall unfortunately things did not work out for Marshall and he was replaced by the management team of Ash Berry and Paul Stoneman with the help of Coach Grant Crookes who after a year in charge were also replaced by the temporary charge of former Grimsby Town defender Mark Lever with the help of Peter Smurthwaite Town finished bottom of the UniBond league and were relegated back to the Northern counties east league. 2008/09 season Chairman Peter Smurthwaite appoints Tim Hotte and Gary Allanson as joint Managers and the club finishes a respectable 4th position in the league and lost to UniBond Premier side North Ferriby in the East Riding senior cup final at the KC Stadium and within days the Management team had resigned from the club due to personnel reasons. but within days and to the delight of the Town supporters Gary Allanson had a change of heart and was back in the hot seat appointing club Captain Phil Harrison as his assistant and the pair proved to be an instant success as the club went on to win the league by 11 points and scoring 123 league goal along the way

2010/11 Another good season and Town were in the race to retain their title but just fell short losing out to Farsley with Parkgate being runners up. Town fans were left shocked when Manager Gary Allanson had decided to leave the club at the end of the season and was involved in helping select his successor and that was to be Mitch Cook the former Scarborough Town and Pickering Town Manager who will take charge for the 2011/12 season, in Cook’s first season Town finished runners up to Retford missing out on the title by one point but were successful in the East riding cup beating Hall Road reserves 9-2 in the cup final at the KC Stadium in Hull. 2012/13 and Town had another good season under Mitch Cook finishing in third place with a massive 95 points and scoring 137 league goals along the way, this was to be Cook’s last season in charge as he announced he would have to stand down due to work commitments. 2013/14 Seasiders fans were delighted to see former Manager Gary Allanson return despite a big rebuilding programme due to players leaving it wasn't a great season with the club finishing 12th in the NCEL and losing 5-2 to North Ferriby in the senior cup final. 2014/15 Another season under Gary Allanson would see an improvement on the previous season with an 8th place finish in the league but some silverware in the East Riding Senior cup after a 4-2 win against Hull United where Craig Hogg scored a hat-trick. 2015/16 the ever improving Seasiders managed a 5th place finish in the NCEL and also got to the League cup semi final losing 1-0 to eventual winners Cleethorpes Town but the club went on to retain the East Riding Senior cup after an impressive 1-0 win over North Ferriby United. 2016/17 The Seasiders didn't have the best of starts to the league campaign but did have their best run in the National cup competitions for a number of years reaching the FA Cup 2nd qualifier and taking Harrogate Town to a replay it was a goal from former Seasider Chib Chilaka scored a 89th minute that won the replay 3-2 for Harrogate. The club also went on to the first round of the FA Vase. It was after a 3-1 away win at Harrogate Railway that the club was shocked by news that

Gary Allanson announced he would be leaving due to personal reasons, Chairman Peter Smurthwaite acted swiftly and appointed former professional footballer and British boxing champion Curtis Woodhouse along with former Hull City Legend Ian Ashbee as his assistant. The Seasiders went on an amazing 14 match winning run that saw the club close in on the title race but we just fell short in the end with a third place finish but the club had success in the East Riding Senior cup final beating Hull City 4-2 in the final the club also made it to the League cup final losing 4-1 to Penistone Church FC at Bramall Lane.
One of the highlights from the season was the success of local lad Jake Day who scored 48 goals and finished the top scorer in the NCEL Premier division. We finished a disappointing ninth in the league, we also lost in the league cup semi final to AFC Mansfield and we reached the East Riding Senior cup final where we lost 2-1 to Hull City at the East Riding FA headquarters.
2018/19 A number of regular players left the club as Curtis Woodhouse was building a new team that he believed would be good enough to challenge for promotion and with wins in the 2017/18 it wasn't the best of seasons to what we would usually league and the FA cup it was looking quite promising. On expect at Bridlington Town, due to work commitments Sunday 9th September Curtis Woodhouse announced he would inspirational assistant manager Ian Ashbee left the club and was be stepping down as Manager with immediate effect and Brett replaced by former Seasiders player Mally Parker. we also Agnew and Anthony Bowsley would step in as caretaker suffered injuries to key players like Nicky McNamara on the managers. After just three games in a caretaker roll Brett and opening day of the season that ruled him out for the season also Anthony were given the roll as the full time Management team Jamie Forrester and Brett Agnew. and it turned out to be a successful one finishing third in the NCEL and also winning the East Riding Senior Cup beating Hull The club also lost key players to North Ferriby United. So Curtis had to rebuild his squad halfway through the season. City u23s in the final. ........ The story continues

AFC Mansfield were formed in 2012 and have signed a 10 year deal to play at Forest Town. The club joined the nonleague pyramid in The Central Midlands Football League. The club are a community club with the aim of giving something back to the community. The club’s nickname is ‘The Bulls’ and the original management team were Micky Taylor, Doug Etches and Graeme Rodger. AFC Mansfield competed on four fronts in the 2012-13 season and came so close to winning the lot in their first season. Despite losing just 2 games all season and amassing 176 goals for and just 20 against 'The Bulls' had to settle for runners-up to Dronfield Town who put in an amazing league run dropping just 5 points all season. Better news came in the Notts Intermediate Cup where 'The Bulls' took the trophy with a 2-0 win at Eastwood Town's ground against Beeston AFC. This was AFC's first ever silverware. This success was quickly followed up by a superb win in The Floodlit Cup Final at Sutton Town's ground against a physical and competitive Newark Town. 'The Bulls' ran out 4-1 winners on the night and added another trophy to the cabinet. 'The Bulls' were hoping to make it a treble with the League Cup at Alfreton Town's ground but with weary legs and still league games to play it was a game too far for the club. After having two players sent off for 2nd bookable offences AFC eventually conceded an injury time goal to Clifton All Whites who lifted the cup after being runners-up last season, that as it turned out was an omen! For the 2013-14 season the club entered the FA Vase and were eventually knocked out in the 2nd Round by Step 5 side Huntingdon Town after a replay. The club further expanded by starting an U19 side and also taking on U7 boys, U10 boys, U11 boys, U15 boys and girls sides and an U16 boys team for the 2013-14 season. The 2013-14 season bought more success, the 1st team were crowned CML North Division Champions and completed the double with a win over Thorne Colliery in The League Challenge Cup. Once again the treble eluded them when they went down 21 to Bulwell FC in the Floodlit Cup Final. Promotion was achieved when AFC Mansfield were accepted into The ToolStation Northern Counties East League for the 2014-15 season. The club further extended its community based teams and had 13 teams competing in the 2014-15 season from U9’s to the 1st Team. Having had Micky Taylor since formation the club were forced to look for another manager 10 games into the season when Micky stepped down. Dean Short was appointed with promotion still the ultimate goal. 10 points were dropped in 7 games and Short’s

stay was, well, short. The directors of the club secured the services of Rudy Funk midway through the season. A creditable 7th place finish in their first season in the NCEL was achieved. A last 16 place in the FA Vase and a Semi-Final place in the League Cup made it a good season for The Bulls. The 2015-16 season began with an 11 game unbeaten run in the league, promotion was the priority and as the season went on any cup competition took a back seat. Always in the top 4 throughout the season a poor January saw The Bulls drop 11 points and allowed Hemsworth MW the chance to pull away. With an automatic spot still to play for AFC Mansfield went on an 11 game unbeaten run to finish as they had started and claim the promotion they had been planning for since the first game of the season. Manager Rudy Funk further strengthened the squad for the club’s first season at step 5 and everybody at the club are looking forward to the challenge. The 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA cup and the last 32 of The FA Vase were achieved in the 2016-17 season and the club finished 7th in its 1st season at step 5. Manager Rudy Funk was given an extension to his contract for another 2 seasons in January 2017. He and assistant Mark Ward had recruited well for the coming season and the anticipation was high. 2017-18 started with The Bulls winning The Toolstation Charity Cup, 3-2 away against Street FC from the Toolstation Western League. Another great run in The FA Cup with The Bulls reaching the 3rd Qualifying round again. Narrowly beaten by Conference side Boston United in front of a record home crowd of 613. Major drama at the end of the season, the club thought it had been edged out of promotion on goal difference after Pontefract and Pickering were given an extra week to finish their fixtures due to the appalling weather throughout the season. Everybody was gearing up for another season in the NCEL when a week later The Bulls were offered a place at Step 4 after Andover Town decided to drop out of that level. Again, Rudy and Mark prepared well for the coming season, the clubs 1st at Step 4. Rudy unfortunately parted with the club in January and Mark Ward was tasked with seeing the season out. He secured the help of Jon Froggatt as his player/assistant manager. However, this partnership was short-lived and the duo left at the end of the season. The Bulls had many applicants for the vacant job and after an extensive process the board appointed Matt Chatfield to the role. Matt bought in Paul Stancliffe and Andy Morris as his management team and set about putting a squad together for the 2019-20 season.

AT LAST AN AWAY WIN!! A long awaited league win away from home finally came to fruition as AFC coasted past secondfrom-bottom Albion Sports. Luke Walker poked home a Morgan James corner to give the Bulls a deserved lead at the break, before Grant Ryan netted in injury time on the break to secure a second league win on the trot and a first on the road of the entire season. The first few minutes saw Albion the brighter side, with full-back Joe Thornton creating their first opening when his whipped cross from the right was headed wide by Alhassane Keita. AFC had settled down in no time, though, as returning midfielder Jon D'Laryea was at the centre of several neat interchanges, although none created any real opportunities as Ross Duggan's attempted 35-yard looping volley would only fall into the arms of Matthew Smith. Whilst the hosts were limited to chances from range, with Keita sending a 30-yarder comfortably wide, Matt Chatfield's men were growing into the tie and Luke Walker would have converted AFC's first corner of the game if his header was a few inches lower. Morgan James, having whipped in that teasing corner, then created a chance of his own as he won possession deep into enemy territory before wiggling free and sending the ball whistling over Smith's crossbar. Having begun to carve out increasingly more chances, the Bulls were finally ahead as Walker PAGE 32

corrected his earlier miss and prodded home another Morgan James corner with just over halfan-hour played. The first half continued to be an entertaining affair, with Walker almost making the right connection from Cameron Hough's deep cross before Jack Crook fired low into the arms of Hugo Warhurst from the edge of the AFC penalty area on the fringe of half-time. The Bulls continued their search for a second after the break, and Jordan Annable came close to doubling the lead when he headed James' near-post free-kick delivery wide. But the hosts, naturally, came increasingly eager to find a leveller, and Joe Thornton perhaps should have done so when he nodded a vicious cross just wide of the mark from ten yards out. With pressure piling on the visitors, Matt Chatfield's side defended resolutely despite missing the likes of Matt Wilson and Kian Sketchley, as the tie headed into an excruciating injury time. The Bulls' brick-wall defending then paid off in the dying seconds of the encounter, as AFC broke and Luke Walker did well to hold the ball up deep inside the penalty area before squaring for Grant Ryan to tuck home a second on 92 minutes and secure a landmark victory. With two wins recorded on the bounce, AFC now set their sights on Saturday when promotionchasers Bridlington visit the Forest Town Arena.
