The signing of the agreement between the Government of Mexico and the State of California in relation to the new Mesa de Otay II international border crossing and port of entry has created great expectations. It is expected that with its opening, trade on both sides of the border will be expedited by reducing waiting times at the crossing. This will be a new option for citizens who travel through the Cali-Baja region and it’s estimated that the waiting time will be, at most, 20 minutes. This will also significantly improve air quality, by reducing the emission of polluting gasses that favor the greenhouse effect.
For the signing of the agreement that took place in Mexico City, attended on behalf of the Government of Mexico, Jorge Nuño, Undersecretary of Infrastructure and Office Manager of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), and Roberto Velasco, head of the Unit for North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE); On behalf of the California state government, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis; and Todd Gloria, Mayor of San Diego and Vice President of the San Diego Association of Governments.
Nuño Lara stressed that the new Otay II port of entry will allow significant savings in operating expenses, by having only one toll booth. Likewise, he highlighted the use of technology for revisions and an innovative operation, such as interchangeable lanes through intelligent systems connected between both countries.
Roberto Velasco added that these infrastructure projects are essential to continue the integration of North American supply chains and reinforce the excellent relationship between both countries.
