When it comes to entertainment, start by thinking about what you want your guests to do.

If they should be socializing, loud music can deter that. Consider low-key background music and having games or points of interest like caricature artists, magicians, or jugglers to get people to talk. If you want to concentrate on team building, find an activity your group can be passionate about, like building bicycles for underprivileged children, or putting together hygiene kits for women’s shelters.

How far in advance should I start planning an event for 500 or more?

Two things are typically in short supply for large events – time and money. If you have a small budget, you will need more time to plan things properly. For large events, I suggest a year to budget, plan, interview and hire.

Who do I contact for approval to use city property for my event?

The best place to find contact information for city properties is on the Internet. Search for the venue you want and find the contact information. Public properties can take longer to book, so give yourself plenty of time.

How much liability insurance should my event vendors have?

Your venue will likely dictate the amount of insurance your vendors will need to carry. In general, most venues require $2 million in coverage. I have seen some locations that require up to $5 million. Your vendors may also have to have endorsements written into the policy for your event.

What are pitfalls I should look out for when planning an event?

Budget is typically where people get into trouble. Decide what you can spend and then figure out how to spend it. Be disciplined when purchasing things and hiring vendors or you may find that you overspend.

What details are often overlooked when planning a themed event?

Don’t forget to dress servers and entertainers to match your overall theme. If getting them costumes isn’t possible, default to something that matches the overall theme. For example, if your event is formal, ask your vendors to wear formal attire. Servers should be in tuxedos. If throwing a casual event, khaki shorts and polo shirts may do the trick.

What are the differences in dress codes?

Dress code is easy to understand. Black tie means men are to wear a tuxedo or dark suit; ladies are to wear an evening gown or a cocktail dress. Cocktail attire means men are to wear a dark suit and ladies are to wear cocktail dress. Formal can fall into either of the previous categories. Semi formal means men may wear a dark or light suit, ladies can wear a dress or suit. Casual attire means men can wear pants and a shirt, ladies can wear a sundress or pants suit. I recommend checking with the host before wearing jeans or shorts.

Creating a wedding registry can be a daunting task for anyone, especially those who don’t know where to begin. Even though many couples are foregoing the traditional wedding route, registry etiquette remains the same.

The registry is really for your guest’s convenience, so try to think about it from their point of view. Here are some guidelines to help you create a registry that will make both you and your guests happy.

SOME THINGS ARE BEST LEFT OFF YOUR WEDDING GIFT REGISTRY. a. Personal items. Guests prefer to purchase something for you as a couple that you will use as a couple or that will enhance your new life together. Personal items, such as an iPhones, iPads or clothing should be left off your list. b. Anything offensive. If anyone on your guest list might be offended, leave it off.

GIVE YOUR GUESTS CHOICES WHEN CREATING AN “ALTERNATIVE” REGISTRY.

With so many unique registries available, it’s easy to get excited about the idea of creating a honeymoon registry, active lifestyle registry or even a wine registry. And while those may create a lot of buzz and excitement among your friends, a traditional registry should also be included for those guests that are more comfortable giving more traditional, practical gifts.

RegistryFinder.com is an intuitive search engine that helps gift givers quickly and easily find online registries for weddings, baby showers, graduations and more. INCLUDE YOUR FUTURE SPOUSE IN THE PROCESS.

It may be tempting to consult a friend instead of your future spouse, especially if he/she doesn’t really seem interested. It’s important that both parties have a say when it comes to selecting registry items.

After all, these are the things that will be in your home for years to come. If there’s a difference of opinion, listen with an open mind so that there are no regrets or hard feelings in the future.

REGISTER FOR ENOUGH ITEMS TO COVER EVERYONE ON YOUR GUEST LIST. People prefer choosing from a large selection of gifts. If you have too few items on your registry, early birds will wipe you out quickly, leaving other guests playing the guessing game.

A good rule of thumb is to register for two gifts per invitation mailed. As the wedding date draws closer, you can add and subtract if needed.

DON’T REGISTER FOR THE SAME ITEMS AT MORE THAN ONE STORE.

CHECK ON YOUR REGISTRY OFTEN.

Adding the same things to multiple registries will result in two things – duplicate gifts, and confused guests.

CREATE A BALANCED REGISTRY.

Don’t hesitate to include your dream items of $200 and more, but your registry should also have a good mix of gifts in the under $50, under $75, and under $100 range. Each guest’s budget is different.

The best registries have a mix of both prices and types of items, so that all of your guests will feel comfortable finding something they will be excited to give you.

REGISTER AT MORE THAN ONE STORE.

I recommend creating a wedding gift registry with at least two different stores. While you may love everything about one particular store, if that store is local or regional, it’s nice to give out of town guests other options. Make sure at least one (but preferably all) of your registries offers an online option.

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY THE PROCESS! You are picking out the things that you will be enjoying together for years to come.

It’s important to review your registries every few weeks, more often as the wedding date approaches, and update if needed.

There may be items that are suddenly out of stock, or that don’t excite you as much as when you added them. You may have received a shower gift that you included on your registry, but your guest purchased it from another store. While a small percentage of couples prefer not to register (and that’s perfectly acceptable), wedding guests have come to rely on the convenience of a gift registry. They want to feel confident that they are buying you something you need and will truly enjoy.

WEDDING RINGER Jen Glantz wants to be your bridesmaid for hire. Learn why.

Kevin Hart’s movie The Wedding Ringer tells the story of a socially awkward groom-to-be with no friends to serve as his groomsmen.

In desperation he hires the owner of Best Man Inc., a company that provides attendants for friendless grooms. The idea sounds far-fetched, but we found out that not only was this movie loosely based on a real wedding ringer, but that brides and grooms around the world are really doing this.

Jen Glantz, owner and professional bridesmaid at Bridesmaid for Hire and author of All My Friends are Engaged started her company in New York eight months ago, and has over 30 brides she’ll be assisting from now until 2017. We caught up with the budding entrepreneur to find out more about this new bridal phenomenon.

Are you amazed how quickly your business took off?

I am amazed, to be honest. I don’t have a business background so I wanted to test the market. I posted an ad on Craigslist and got hundreds of responses from women who wanted to hire me, and even more from women who wanted to work for me.

Were you apprehensive about responding to the inquiries you received on Craigslist?

Of course. You have to vet anyone you meet on Craigslist. I would never meet with someone right away. When preparing to do business with someone that contacts me online, I ask them to send me some of their social media history. I also have Skype sessions or phone calls 16

with them in advance. The point is to check them out thoroughly. Once someone is screened, all my clients have to sign a contract, and there is a deposit, so it’s a process.

The Wedding Ringer was a comedy, but what are some the daunting aspects of your job?

Working with each bride is a rewarding experience, but it’s very time consuming.

I don’t have the kind of business where I am hired to show up on the day of like Kevin Hart did in the film. I work with brides anywhere from 18 to 3 months before their wedding day. We get to know each other and I get to help them with a variety of tasks beforehand. I get heavily involved in their life and what they need done.

I’m not there to show up as a party guest and dance the night away. I’m going to be their personal assistant to help them and the rest of the wedding party.

The idea of jetting away to another city or country and celebrating with only your closest family and friends can be very appealing! There’s a lot to be said about getting married in a location with tons of things to do and sights to see.

BEFORE YOU BOOK, THOUGH, THERE ARE FIVE THINGS EVERY COUPLE SHOULD KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANNING A DESTINATION WEDDING:

BUDGET WISELY.

Many couples think of destination weddings as a way to contain wedding costs, but expenses can add up quickly when considering travel, lodging, meals, and entertainment on top of the wedding itself. Be careful to budget for every part of your trip, and don’t forget to focus your attention on the reason for traveling in the first place: your dream wedding!

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

When choosing a destination for your wedding, be sure to think about more than just what will look amazing in pictures. How far is the venue from the airport? Will you and your guests be able to stay on property, or will transportation be required to get to the wedding? Is the ceremony space private or open to the public? Is there a limit to the number of guests who can attend? All of these questions should be considered when making a venue decision.

MAKE IT LEGAL.

Just because your destination officiant pronounces you, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re legally married. Consult with your wedding venue to see what paperwork they file and what you might have to do on your own. Also, check the requirements in your home country to make sure your marriage is properly registered with legal authorities.

THINK OF YOUR GUESTS.

Asking guests to travel to a destination wedding often means asking them to invest a great deal of time and money. Consider presenting those you invite with a “total price” for them to attend your wedding so they can plan accordingly. Also, provide them things to do while visiting your wedding destination. If they know they can craft a vacation out of it, the cost will be easier to justify.

DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF.

When you venture away from home for a wedding, you lose some control over what happens. Collaborate with a wedding planner at your destination to make sure everything you envision is accounted for ahead of time. Once you arrive, try to kick back, relax, and enjoy every moment of your destination wedding experience.

Remember, it’s not about the little things…it’s about your new life together!

Destination weddings can be fun, intimate, romantic, and memorable for you and your guests. Do some legwork ahead of time to be confident that a particular destination works for you. Then you’ll be ready for a wedding that none of you will ever forget.

nautical nuptials SEPTEMBER 13, 2014 DELAND, FL

After a six-year courtship, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson married longtime girlfriend and Magic 107.7 morning radio host Leslye Gale.

The nuptials were exchanged in a private ceremony at the Lake Beresford Yacht Club in Deland.

The newly rebuilt club, located along the scenic shores of Lake Beresford, was the perfect backdrop for the nautical-themed affair. The amazing Joe Hearn Events assembled an elite team of vendors, including Karrah Flores Photography, Dwayne Marret Trio, Longwood Event Rentals, Bob Bigwood, Entertainment, QuestDrape and Cakes by Elisa.

The magnificent sunset set the stage for the ceremony, followed by seven-course tapas-style dining. The beautiful U-shape table setting gave guests an intimate dining experience.

One of Johnson’s closest friends, Seminole County Sheriff Don Elsinger performed the service.

Standing up for the groom was Johnson’s daughter Casey, who looked regal in a navy blue dress.

Leslye looked stunning in a custom designed gown by Adventura Gowns, one of two gowns she would wear throughout the evening.

Hair styling was provided by Melissa Mark of Simply Irresistible Salons in Deland and Orange City. The styles were kept light and airy in keeping with Florida’s naturally beautiful scenery.

“We would have loved to invite the entire town to our wedding, but it was simply impossible,” said Sheriff Johnson.

“While so many of our friends couldn’t be there in body,” Leslye added, “Ben and I had each and every one of you in our hearts.”

Maria and Ryan’s Art Deco-themed wedding was beautiful, intimate and fun.

The bride and groom chose to stray from tradition and keep the emphasis on simplicity.

There was no wedding party, and only their best of friends and family were in attendance.

Maria wore the most gorgeous and nontraditional gown; stunning 1920s-style vintage dress and she got ready in the company of her mother only.

The ceremony was short and sweet, but lovely, and the reception was full of dancing and toasts to the new couple. The evening was topped off with a special exit for the lovely couple who drove away into the night as husband and wife.

Janina and Francisco’s beautiful sunset ceremony took place in Mission Inn’s Plaza de la Fontana.

The wedding party walked around the fountain, down the aisle to the lakefront, where a draped canopy with sparkling chandeliers awaited.

The ladies of the wedding party wore long soft silver dresses and flower crowns with fresh, white flowers lovingly made by the bride’s sister.

The groomsmen looked dapper in black suits.

Janina looked absolutely stunning in a dazzling blush Monique Lluillier mermaid dress with a long, flowing veil.

The reception took place in Mission Inn’s La Hacienda and had a “Travel Around the World” theme with a blush, cream and gold color palette. As guests entered the room, they each signed a globe as the guestbook. The entire ballroom perimeter was draped in flowing,

cream-colored drape. There were sets of long, king tables topped with gold sequin runners and clusters of cylinders with flowers and floating candles.

The newlywed couple shared their plated dinner together at a sweetheart table with a vintage white tufted bench and a table

with sparkly gold linen topped with fresh florals. The beautifully designed cake was cream and gold with a gold sequined, “Best Day Ever” topper and had an array of matching artisan cupcakes. The entire atmosphere was breathtakingly elegant.

After dinner, the couple received a serenade from a Mariachi band, a nod to the bride’s Mexican heritage. The romantic serenade transitioned into lively music during this special Hora Loca (the crazy hour), a popular tradition in Hispanic weddings. A sleek, white custom dancefloor featured the couple’s initials in gold.

pink perfection JANUARY 10, 2015 ORLANDO, FL Amy’s sister-in-law Jenn and her friend Lindsey threw an absolutely gorgeous event at the beautiful Grand Bohemian in downtown Orlando.

All of the tables were covered with delicate pink and white flowers along with roses and candles.

In front of an ivory ruffled backdrop, a perfectly designed dessert table held gorgeous golden sparkling cake stands, an elegant cake fit for a royal princess, glittery cake pops, pink and white dipped oreos, chocolate covered strawberries and monogrammed cookies all custom made for the shower.

Guests all received golden frame favors which served as their place setting, as well as a custom jar of sweet honey. Even the gold and pink invitations and menu were custom-made for the shower.

Paradise Cove hosted the wedding reception of one of its very own on October 18, 2014.

Ashley is the daughter of venue owners David and Andrea Benjamin. The reception was held after their ceremony, which took place at Holy Family Catholic Church. Ashley and her groom Matthew made their entrance in style, arriving by seaplane on the venue’s white sandy beaches.

A monogrammed ice sculpture of the couple’s initials towered over a raw seafood bar, and guests sipped cocktails poured from the chilly vodka luge. Dinner was served under the twinkly pavilion lights as guests enjoyed the beautiful sunset over Lake Bryan. Guests sat underneath a clear tent adorned with cascading chandeliers.

Bethany and Tom wanted a unique wedding reception. Tom’s interest in aviation led to the idea of using an airplane hangar as their reception space.

The morning of their wedding saw a tornado warning and a torrential downpour, but the clouds eventually dissipated and a beautiful sunset lit the runaway.

With over 12,000 square feet of space to utilize, draping, farm tables, and lounge furniture turned the expansive space into an intimate and inviting reception venue with hangar doors that opened directly onto the runway.

Guests enjoyed four unique food stations and a bar situated under an actual airplane. Stunning floral and ever-changing uplighting throughout the room was the perfect mix of modern chic and garden glam that Bethany desired.

vintage romance NOVEMBER 1, 2014 NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL

Dustin and Haleigh wanted something that was going to give their wedding guests a different kind of experience.

“I wanted them to feel as if they were transported to a different time and place. The two words that kept running through my head were ‘vintage romance.’”

Haleigh’s mother tirelessly scoured the internet looking for glass bottles, candy canisters, lace doilies, cameo necklaces, tea pots, and the like. In addition to sourcing antiques, she borrowed a hat that once belonged to Haleigh’s great grandfather and a dress that was her grandmother’s.

All these items were used at stations throughout the event that created the antique feel Haleigh had envisioned.

“It was as if we were transported to a beautifully curated antique shop, with something new and beautiful to see at every turn. I loved that a piece of mine and Dustin’s life can be counted as a part of the history of each item that was there.”

Among the memorable details of the wedding was a quilt of her

mother’s making that acted as a sign-in book; bookmarks made from antique lace and vintage keys used as favors for the guests, along with wildflower arrangements that captured the beauty and simplicity of the ceremony.

One final touch was the personalized signs created by Haleigh’s friend Michelle Spanos. The signs had the ceremony timeline, highlights of their relationship, bible verses, and quotes that were special to the couple.

“Those signs made our wedding that much more personal. I could never thank Michelle enough for the time and hard work it took.”

homemade heaven NOVEMBER 15, 2014 CLERMONT, FL When planning an outside wedding in Florida, you have to expect the worst: heat, humidity, bugs, and plenty of rain. As a good luck charm a month before the wedding, they had a bourbon burying party!

“We buried bottles of Kentucky bourbon at the site of the ceremony in my parent’s yard. After we said “I do,” we opened all three bottles and passed them around to all the guests! It rained every other Saturday in November, but not on our wedding day.”

Amy walked down the aisle to the Vitamin String Quartet version of “Secrets” by One Republic. It is a moving song, and the string band, The Holcomb Brothers, nailed it. Her father had 10-foot doors cemented into the middle of the yard, and they waited for an entire verse of this song before they opened, building up the suspense for everyone.

Amy designed the cake table from an old dresser she picked up from a consignment shop. She had it stripped down, painted white with mint trim, and had a huge mirror attached that was painted sparkly gold. It was then decorated with cheap antique vases, candles, knick knacks from around her parents’ house, their initials on the mirror,

and the sparkliest runner. On the table was a white cake with raspberry filling and buttercream frosting. The cake toppers were two little swans.

The florist created an incredible bouquet of ranunculus, dusty miller (in honor of our new last name), Queen Anne’s lace, wax flowers, and tons of greenery.

In the quaint outdoor courtyard at Casa Feliz, guests were dazzled by the beautiful décor, featuring floral color contrasts of lush raspberry and light pink brought out in the spectacular designs from Lee Forrest. Calligraphy details and sequinned table linens accented the lovely surroundings.

As a sweet touch, Ashli, Brian, and Brian’s twin girls planted a tree using soil from the cities where they were born. Now as the tree grows over the years, their family will grow together.

With family visiting from California, Texas, England and Canada Natalie and Paul exchanged nuptials at the luxury Grand Bohemian Hotel in Downtown Orlando.

Upon arrival, guests experienced a dazzling blend of culture and hospitality. The exquisite ceremony took place on the Rooftop Pool Deck overlooking the City Beautiful. The 160 guests in attendance watched the stunning bride walk down the aisle with a broach bouquet handmade by her mother and escorted by her adoring father.

During cocktail hour, guests enjoyed a white chocolate fountain for their sweet tooth, and a customized photo booth allowing them to share photo memories with the happy couple.

The reception took place in the Johann Strauss Ballroom and oered guests the chance to indulge

in the finest culinary offerings of the Grand Bohemian.

The DJ had all the guests on their feet dancing throughout the evening, and the bride surprised the groom with a personalized cake in the shape of a replica jersey of his favorite NBA team!

The couple cut their remarkable wedding cake with the bride’s

parent’s original cake knife, used when they were married in 1972.

Later, guests were brought to the entrance of the hotel to receive a sweet surprise from Yum Yum Cupcake Truck. Beautifully decorated boxes labeled “A Sweet Ending to a New Beginning” to conclude the evening’s festivities.

Selecting an event menu has gotten so complicated. Recently, I had a bridal client with thirty-five guests. Among her guests we had vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, and gluten intolerants. For those thirty-five guests, we had to have five different menus!

Planning for a variety of diets can be complicated, so I’ve written a few tips to help my team navigate the process:

The catering manager can get with the chef to start brainstorming ideas on how to manage restrictions.

For your cocktail hour, include items with fish, beef, chicken, and vegetable-only. For the salad course, order all vegetables and have multiple dressing options. For the entree, order a dual entree (4 ounces of fish and four ounces of beef) and ask your venue to have vegetarian options on-hand in case you don’t know of someone’s dietary restrictions in advance.

SAVE THE DATE CARDS With so many other obligations on your plate, do you really need to worry about sending Save the Dates? The short answer is yes, and here are some reasons why:

You want your family and friends to be there. If they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know in advance when the wedding is going to be, your potential guests might book their annual summer vacation on that day. Even worse, they may accept an invitation to another wedding on your big day!

People need time to plan and save. Especially if you’re planning a destination wedding, your guests might need extra time to save for the expense of attending. People often need to put in requests for time off work, as well.

Under sunny skies in the Plaza de la Fontana at Mission Inn Resort & Club, fifty couples married 50-plus years renewed their vows in a group ceremony, solidifying their commitment.

Bill and Jeanette Victor of Mount Dora were the longest wed couple, celebrating 70 years of marriage. Other couples came from across Florida and five other states to participate.

“With three generations of our family involved in the hospitality business, fifty years have produced for us and our guests quite literally a lifetime of memories to reminisce,” said Bud Beucher, Mission Inn Resort’s vice president and general manager. “We wanted a unique way to reflect on our half century of ownership and management, and this occasion was the perfect way to celebrate and personally show our appreciation.”
