From the Desk of Chief Harper: November 22, 2021

Aya, Each year as the leaves begin to fall, we prepare for a changing of the seasons. It is a time of reflection and thanksgiving. As Peoria citizens, we have much to be thankful for. We are a blessed people, living in a blessed land. Each day, I am reminded of this as I walk past a recently completed U.S. map that displays how far our Peoria people reach across this nation. Our Peoria campus project continues to move towards completion. Soon we will be planning ribbon-cutting ceremonies and tours for the new Community Center, Learning Center, and Emergency Response Center. Each of these new facilities represents a place where our people can gather together and celebrate who we are as a tribe and as a family. The Community Center will provide a place for celebrations, fellowship, and a place to mourn with eachother as we honor loved ones that we have lost. The Learning Center is an investment in our future generations, both educationally and culturally. The Emergency Response Center provides a storehouse for our tribal nation, equipping us for future emergencies or disasters that impact our citizens. All three facilities, including the grounds themselves, will be a beautiful and safe place to come together as a people and a Tribe. As our cultural footprint grows and develops, our economy broadens and matures, our commitment to investing in our citizens remains the priority of this Administration. I want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank our incredible employees here at Peoria. Their dedicated and focused efforts have been evident all year. From the increase in grant funding to expanding our fish, mussels, and cattle programs. From the continued processing of our exceptional citizen benefits to the newly approved Cares and ARPA citizen distribution dollars. From the continued consultations on our traditional homelands to the development of our new language program. From our consistent Indian Child Welfare protections to the development of new health and counseling efforts. I congratulate each of our team members for their continued efforts to provide exceptional services to our tribal citizens. Before closing, I want to extend my gratitude and appreciation to our Election Committee, candidates, and citizens for a successful Special Election. Congratulations to our newly elected Second Chief, Rosanna Dobbs. As always, we remain PeoriaProud! Be well, Craig Harper Chief

Peoria Events & community engagement Early Childhood Program Hosts Fire Safety Night

October 8th, 2021 Peoria Tribe’s Early Childhood Program joined Quapaw Nation Fire Department to share the knowledge of fire safety with our youth and their families at Fire Safety Night. The Quapaw Nation Fire Department attended to demonstrate proper placement of smoke detectors, how to test your smoke detectors and when, how to use fire extinguishers, what to do if you’re caught in a fire! The children were also invited to see the firetruck and have fun while learning the importance of fire safety. At the end of the night, each family was sent home with a fire extinguisher and a smoke detector! What a wonderful use of resources to protect our children with proper knowledge! #PeoriaProud

The BIA invasive species program has continued to be successful during the FY21 fiscal year. The UTV’s are about to receive some much-needed upgrades! We are always looking and searching for new locations to deploy traps within Ottawa County, Oklahoma. If any Tribal Citizens have land within Ottawa County and have feral hog issues, please get in touch with the Environmental Department! Jamie Williams, Environmental Manager

The fish hatchery is preparing to perform specific maintenance to winterize warm weather equipment, which are items and tools that are primarily utilized in the warmer months. This is something we do to ensure optimal performance for our equipment for the upcoming spring. We are also planning and preparing to take bids to perform old-pond construction. This will be an exciting opportunity for us, by getting specific ponds in working order as well as allowing us to open several more ponds for spawning and grow-out procedures. It’s going to be a great fall/winter at the Peoria tribe aquatic facility, and we are super excited to continue making progress in preparation for the 2022 fish spawning season. The Endangered Species Grant has great news this quarter. The FLUPSY was installed this quarter with the help of Dr. Chris Barnhart, his lab manager Allison Seja, their intern Derrick, and the rest of the members of our Environmental Department. In September, we welcomed a new member to our team, Ashlyn Roten, who will be assisting in freshwater mussel propagation, collection and care. We have been training her to clean, maintain, and build aquaria as well as to handle and feed the animals. Over the next few months, she will learn how to collect mussels, apply for collection permits, and inoculate various mussel species. Additionally, we designed and constructed our new Pulse Overflow (aka “Beaker”) system. The system was installed with the help of Ashyln Roten and designed with the help of Dr. Chris Barnhart and Amy Maynard—the state malacologist in Virginia. Lastly, the mussel lab has been working on the grow out of juvenile Bleufer, Fatmucket, and Neosho Mucket mussels. We will continue to grow out these species over wintertime and spring.
