@PEORIATRIBE

Aya, As you receive our first newsletter of the year, I hope it finds each of our Peoria citizens joyful and well. This time of year brings about our ever-growing Peoria Children’s Christmas Party, end of year family gatherings and time well spent around the fireplace. December also allows for times of annual reflection and thankfulness as a Nation, Tribe and State. I pray peace and joy in 2024 upon all three. Thank you to each of our citizens that were able to attend our annual events or stopped by our tribal headquarters to utilize any or all our tremendous citizen benefit programs or purchase tribal merchandise. I look forward to seeing, visiting, and participating with each of you at our upcoming events in 2024. Let us gather again soon at our Peoria General Council Meeting this March 2nd at Buffalo Run Casino and Resort here in Miami, OK. God bless each of you and our great Peoria Nation in 2024.

Be Well.

Chief Craig Harper

Christmas Party

Peoria Tribe ‘Let it Snow’ at the Children’s Christmas Party

10

Peoria families gathered at the Peoria Children’s Christmas Party on December 9, 2023. Children received gifts from Santa, built their own snow globe, and enjoyed lunch with their family! It is a great honor to bring our children together year after year for a warm meal, storytelling, and lots of family fun!

Prepare Your Home for the Winter Months Weatherization is always a good idea in the winter months, and its benefits go beyond the financial savings of lower utility bills. It can increase mental and physical health by reducing asthma medical costs, increasing physical comfort, and reducing mental stress, resulting in better sleep. So, let’s get into some cheap and easy ways we can weatherize our homes.

1. Door Sweeps: A good way to test if one is needed is to lay a piece of paper across the door frame and close the door; if you can pull the paper out without tearing it, you need a door sweep. 2. Door and Window Weather Stripping: This seals out unwelcome drafts, saves on utilities, and prevents bugs. 3. Seal Gaps and Cracks with Caulk and Foam: A 1/16-inch crack around a window is equivalent to a window open 3 inches. 4. Window Insulation Kits: These kits, when properly installed, can save a lot of money. 5. Water Heater Tank Covers: If not well insulated, these tanks can lose heat. Don’t forget weatherization challenges. Tightening up a home to increase energy efficiency can sometimes come with unintended consequences of allowing contaminates that would normally be diluted in a “leaky” home to become concentrated. Combustion gases like carbon monoxide, secondhand smoke in the homes of smokers, and hundreds of other chemicals from the cleaners we use to the materials we build with can all increase to unhealthy levels. Another concern is the buildup of moisture inside a home from cooking, laundry, and showers, creating a high level of humidity indoors and the risk of mold/mildew. So, how do we combat these unintended consequences? Ventilation! Some of the easiest steps to properly vent your home are to install ventilation fans in the bathroom and kitchen (preferably over the stove) that carry the water vapor and other contaminants to the outside. If ventilation fans aren’t available, pick days when the weather is tolerable and open your doors. Make sure you wash blankets and vacuum regularly to decrease particulate matter. I hope this information helps you save money, stay warm, and breathe easily. All of us at the Natural Resources Team wish you the happiest of holidays. 12

Peoria Welcomes Greenhouse Manager - Sam Doty! My name is Sam Doty, and I am the new Greenhouse Manager. I am very excited and honored to work for the Peoria Tribe and its citizens. I grew up in Utah, working in my parents’ greenhouses growing bedding and foliage plants. My parents also owned a floral shop where I worked through high school. During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to manage their greenhouses and the flower shop. I obtained an undergraduate degree in Botany at Utah Valley University and then completed a master’s degree in Horticulture at the University of Arkansas, with an emphasis on greenhouse management and hydroponic vegetable production. After graduation, I taught greenhouse management and other courses at both universities while also managing greenhouses for each institution. Between working at the universities, I managed a non-profit 10-acre organic vegetable farm, which helped to ignite my passion for fighting food insecurity. I have grown tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, root vegetables, leafy greens, herbs, squash, onions, leeks, garlic, strawberries, blackberries, and a wide range of floriculture crops on a commercial scale using a variety of techniques including field production, hoop houses, greenhouses, and hydroponics. When I’m not growing plants, I love spending time with my kids, cooking, camping, hiking, kayaking, working on old cars, and catching snakes and turtles.
