Dear Readers, It is with great pride, joy, and an overwhelming sense of purpose that we welcome you to the very first issue of Her Voyage magazine. This is not just the launch of a publication; it is the beginning of a dream fulfilled dream to create a space that uplifts, empowers, and celebrates the stories of women from all walks of life. For the past year, we have been honored to bring you People of Africa magazine, a platform dedicated to highlighting the vibrant stories and voices across the African continent. But as we journeyed through those stories, another vision began to take shape one that transcends borders and focuses on the shared strength, resilience, and beauty of women everywhere. That vision is Her Voyage. We created this magazine with you, our readers, in mind.

We want Her Voyage to be more than just a collection of pages; we want it to be a family, a community where your voices matter. This is a place where we celebrate the journeys of women from the bold explorers who navigate uncharted territories to the quiet warriors who find courage in their everyday battles.

“Life is a process”

Every wrinkle is proof you’ve lived, not just existed. Blink, and it’s a story.

Live boldly, for each chapter is etched into your being, making your story worth every wrinkle. This profound sentiment came from Miss Maggie Ritchie, a woman who cherishes every single moment of her vibrant life.

When I asked her to define life in one word during our interview, she smiled warmly and touched my hand. “My dear friend, process. Life is a process. Do not regret what has happened; it’s a lesson. Learn from it,” she said. Her wisdom radiated as she continued, “If it wasn’t meant for you, it wouldn’t have happened.” This lesson, she emphasized, had been her guiding light.

Miss Maggie’s philosophy on life is as refreshing as a morning breeze. “Life is for living,so live it. Enjoy as much as you can. You don’t need a million dollars to find joy. A good novel, a cup of coffee by the window it’s all about perspective.” Her apartment, adorned with books ranging from birdwatching guides to atlases and novels, is a testament to her belief in learning as the essence of life. “Most young people don’t read anymore,” she lamented. “But when you stop learning, your mind begins to fade.” Even now, Miss Maggie remains a teacher at heart.”

“Life is for living,so live it”

Although she can’t travel much these days, her books and a large world map displayed in her home transport her to distant lands. “I’ve been to Europe and Africa,” she said, guiding me to the map. She pointed to Egypt. “I visited here. It was my first time in Africa. The history came alive. I’ve been to Egypt twice.”

“Choose yourself first. Time is fleeting.

No one ever said life would be easy.”

Sitting amidst her lush plants, she shared her happiness. “Talking to my kids, feeding the birds, watering my plants, reading, and watching a Turkish TV series, Black Money Love, keep me busy and content.”

Her laughter filled the air as she recounted spending $90 on a single plant. “They keep me going,” she said with a grin.

Miss Maggie’s advice is simple yet profound: “Choose yourself first. Time is fleeting.

No one ever said life would be easy. Even the rich have struggles. Pick your battles wisely, and don’t regret falling.

The key is to learn from it.”

She added, “When help comes, accept it. Needing others doesn’t diminish you. We all need each other.”

When asked if she considers herself a feminist, Miss Maggie chuckled. “Growing up, the word had a different connotation. But I knew what I wanted and needed.”

She described her late husband, an engineer from Caltech, as a kind, humble, and brilliant man. “He was my equal and supported my dreams, even when it wasn’t the norm for an engineer’s wife to work or study.”

Their love story began in college. “We met at a party hosted by his school. Our first date was a movie. He borrowed a car to pick me up,” she recalled with a smile. “We dated for four years without sex. He respected my decision to prioritize my education.”

Miss Maggie’s eyes sparkled as she recounted their life together. “I wanted to continue my education after having kids, so I told him I’d attend night classes twice a week. He supported me.

Back then, it wasn’t common, but he believed in me.”

Reflecting on her younger self, Miss Maggy shared a humorous anecdote. She’d fallen in love with a house she passed daily and persuaded her husband to buy it. “It was beautiful on the outside, but I didn’t realize it had four floors and an elevator!” she laughed.

“My husband loved tinkering with that elevator. It brought him so much joy.”

One of the most memorable moments in that house was when a phone repairman got lost. “He called out, ‘Hello, I’m lost! I don’t know where to go!’” Miss Maggy recounted, laughing until tears welled in her eyes. “It was a maze. He eventually found his way, but we joked about needing a map just to navigate our own home. I never realized how overwhelming the size would be until I lived there.” Despite its grandeur, the house was filled with love, laughter, and her husband’s weekly elevator projects.

When asked what she misses most about her husband, her eyes softened. “The togetherness. Working on projects, gardening, feeding birds. My world was my kids and my husband. Girl’s nights out or trips weren’t my thing. I’d have missed him too much.”

Dear Daughter, It doesn’t matter how old you are you will always be the little girl in your mother’s eyes.

And if there’s one thing you must remember in every season of life, it is this: you are worthy. No amount of money, praise, or love should ever cost you your peace, your soul, or your self-respect.

Let me tell you what I’ve learned the hard way the kind of learning that only comes from breaking your own heart and rebuilding it with your own hands.

Men will treat you how you allow them to.

You can’t make a man love you. You can’t “fix” one either.

You can give your heart, your time, your laughter even your silence and it still won’t make him stay if he isn’t meant to.

You might think you're fighting for love, but often you're just holding onto fear.

When a man loves you, really loves you, you won’t have to chase, guess, beg, or shrink.

And if you ever find yourself searching through his phone, reading between the lies, or living off emotional crumbs baby, you already know the truth. Your gut is not gossiping. It's gospel.

Love deeply.

Trust completely. But never, ever silence your inner voice she’s your oldest, wisest friend.

Money will never define you, but knowing how to use it wisely will protect you.

Don’t chase status. Prada won't make you powerful. Working overtime for labels won’t bring you peace.

But saving a little? Investing in your growth? Creating something on the side that’s yours and yours alone? That, my love, is freedom.

Let your money reflect your values.

And remember: you don’t need a rich man you need a rich life

Here’s the thing no one teaches us enough life is not just about survival. It’s about magic.

Find friends who water your soul, not just your plans.

Let go of people who make love feel like labor.

Travel when you can. Smile at strangers. Say yes to something that scares you.

You were not born to work until you die. You were born to live.

The world will try to tame you, label you, exhaust you.

But don’t let it. Run barefoot through your dreams. Paint your fears in color. And remember some of the best chapters in your life will begin with a brave decision to walk away from what you’ve outgrown.

Live fully let your face do the storytelling."

Be loud. Be soft. Be still. Be wild.

Just don’t be afraid to live because life will pass anyway.

Glow Girl, Glow: How One Woman Turned SelfCare into a Skincare Empire

Honestly? It all started with a love for natural skincare. I was whipping up body butters and face masks in my kitchen not for business, just out of pure passion. I trusted the ingredients, I loved the process, and I adored how my skin responded. It felt like self-care, science, and magic all in one.

Then my (now) husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, said something I’ll never forget: “What if this isn’t just for you?” That question changed everything. He saw potential in my passion before I even did. And that’s how MS Butters & Glow was born out of love, purpose, and a desire to share safe, natural skincare with others. It’s been anything but easy, but every challenge has been worth it. I built this brand from the ground up, and every jar still carries that love.

Girl document everything. I can’t stress it enough. In the early days, I was so caught up in creating that I forgot to track things sales, purchases, customer feedback. And let me tell you, growth without records? Nearly impossible.

Now I understand that documentation isn’t just for taxes or spreadsheets it’s for clarity, strategy, and peace of mind. Knowing where you’ve been helps you plan where you’re going. Lesson learned!

Don’t listen to the noise. People will doubt your vision before they even understand it. And sometimes? That doubt comes from people you love.

But you must believe in your dream, especially when no one else does.

Also tech is your best friend. I built this business using free tools and YouTube tutorials. I taught myself everything from product formulation to branding and business registration. And now, with AI and digital platforms? The resources are endless. Use them. Build with them.

Grow unapologetically.

My biggest dream? To see MS Butters & Glow on store shelves across Tanzania and eventually beyond. Right now, we’re raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to help with machinery, registration, and expansion. It’s a bold step, but I’m ready for it.

We're also cooking up some gorgeous new products a ricebased face mask, a gentle everyday face wash, and a few surprises I can’t reveal just yet.

And when love soured? She licked the salt off her palm, swallowed her pride with a smirk, and dared the world to serve her something harder.

This is not a story of survival. This is a story of reinvention. Of beauty rising from bruises. Of a woman who took the wreckage, stitched it together with laughter and resilience, and walked no, rolled into every room like a revolution.

Tanuke and I met at Texas Southern University, both knee-deep in projects, prayers, and pressure.

We shared a few classes, but one memory has burned itself into my bones like a favorite lyric. It was Dr. B’s class yes, that Dr. B. The class that gave everyone stress headaches and imposter syndrome.

Tears welled in my eyes. I was ready to throw in the towel and drop out. But before I could even exhale, Tanuke leaned in, side-eyeing my breakdown like it owed her money.

“Baby girl, stop. Nothing in this world is impossible. Look at me before you start shedding crocodile tears, you’re gonna be just fine.”

She said it with the ease of someone who knew storms intimately and still believed in rainbows.

That’s who Tanuke is. She doesn’t just endure she elevates.

So when it came time to choose our first-ever Her Voyage feature story, there was no debate. It had to be her. Her journey is stitched into every page of what this magazine stands for truth, tenacity, transformation.

LET’S TALK ABOUT LOVE & MARRIAGE Two-time divorcée. Mother of four. Lover. Fighter. Survivor.

Tanuke leans in with a smile, her eyes lit with a knowing glint not bitterness, but clarity. She's lived it. Felt every chapter in full color.

And now, she’s willing to share the pages most of us would rather keep folded.

“Girl, let me just go ahead and skip to the end of the first marriage.”

She laughs, soft and sharp at once, the kind that says I’ve healed, but I haven’t forgotten.

I got married young - young and broke. He was a prison guard. At first, things were sweet, like they should be. I came from a low-income family, and he was doing better than where I came from. So yes, girl I upgraded.”

She grins wide, owning her truth.

“But everything shifted when he got promoted.

Somewhere along the way, he started bringing the prison home. I guess he thought I was one of his inmates. Long story short I kicked his ass. And now I can’t vote because of it.”

The room goes quiet. Then she takes a deep breath and walks me through the moment everything snapped.

THE FIGHT He was angry when he came home for lunch. Told me to get the f*** out of his house. I told him, calm and collected, ‘I will as soon as I finish cooking and feeding our children.’”* He came back about 30 minutes later. Grabbed me by the neck.

Slammed me to the floor.

Punched me in the side and stomach. I crawled I mean literally crawled to get to the table where my keys were. He hit me in the back, kept cursing me out. But when he went to the restroom?”*

I got out the door. Made it to my trunk. Grabbed the crowbar. Came back in and hit him with it right there while he was on the toilet.” He punched me a few more times. Blood was dripping. I hit him a few more times until he started bleeding, too.”

The police were called. But the outcome wasn’t equal. I was charged with assault. Got a felony conviction. Lost my job. He kept his. Ain’t that something?”

She shakes her head, but not in regret. Just in that way women do when they’ve lived through injustice and turned it into something stronger than revenge resolve. He thought he got the best of me. We later divorced.”

MARRIAGE #2: A BEAUTIFUL MESS Tanuke lets out a laugh the kind that holds both joy and ache.

“Now this one? A beautiful mess. But boy, I learned from it. When it ended, I didn’t just walk away. I came out someone else. Stronger.

Wiser. Softer in all the right places, harder in the ones that needed protection.”

She pauses.

“Five years after the first marriage crumbled, I got remarried. And I was happy.

For real. He was a good man and we were okay. Not perfect, but okay. Life felt steady.”

Until it didn’t.

“Then life pulled a plot twist. I got sick spinal meningitis. I was hospitalized for five months. March through August of 2005. I was just 34, still young, still feeling myself. But that illness stripped everything. My health, my energy, my sense of control.” Her eyes soften, remembering not just her body’s pain, but her husband’s heartbreak.“He was already grieving his mother, watching her fade from cancer. When I got sick, it triggered something in him. He couldn’t handle it. Couldn’t watch me break down, too. So he broke down instead.”

“We lost everything. He moved out, took off to a country town in North Texas with his father. The kids got split up. And me? I had to move back in with my mama. A grown woman, sick, trying to heal, trying not to feel ashamed.”

But Tanuke doesn’t tell this part like a tragedy. She tells it like a triumph in slow motion.

“In December that same year, I got up and got out. Moved into an apartment just me and God and the leftovers of my strength. I could barely sit up straight. Still healing.

But I needed to feel like a woman again. Like me again.”

“Public transportation became my angel. I used the service that picks up disabled folks door-to-door. I rode it to physical therapy. To job interviews. To anywhere that gave me hope. Bit by bit, I came back to myself. I could finally eat. Breathe.

Live.”

She exhales like she's still letting some of that season go.

“We moved out of that apartment and started life over. Again. I really thought we were good.”

Then came the shift.

“He started coming home later.

Locking his phone. Sleeping on the edge of the bed like I was contagious not from illness, but from truth. And the truth was, love doesn’t live in secrets.”

Tanuke leans back and flashes a grin that’s half-sarcasm, half-survival.

“Meet inmate... hold the applause... no loud laughs please. I went to jail for writing a bad check.”

She chuckles, shaking her head like she still can’t believe how wild life can be.

“And while I was locked up trying to figure out if orange was really my color, he moved out of our home.

Just packed up, ghosted. No warning, no letter, no crumbs to follow.”

“The next year, I filed for divorce.

Free from prison. Free from my marriage.”

She lifts her chin, not in pride but in peace that quiet power women find when the storm passes and they’re still standing.

So I looked at her, my sister in spirit, and asked: “Tanuke... what came next?

WHAT NEXT? “I asked my inner voice that very question,” she says, resting her hand on her chest. “‘Girl… it’s not where you fall it’s how you get back up that defines you.’”

Then she laughs. That signature Tanuke laugh. The kind that’s been tested in fire.

“So here you go: meet a felon… with a Master’s degree. From a Black historical university. TSU, baby!”

She lets the pride dance on her tongue before dropping another truth bomb.

“After I got out, I moved to the South Side and went back to school. Sat in those classrooms with purpose in my heart and pain in my rearview. Earned my Bachelor’s in History and Journalism. I was hyped. Ready to rewrite the next chapter of my life.”

Encouraged by professors and peers, she applied for a job opening at the university. She knew she was qualified hell, overqualified.

“Then boom rejection. They told me I wasn’t eligible because of my felony. That hit like a ton of bricks. I cried. Not because I couldn’t take a ‘no,’ but because I felt like I was being punished all over again after I already paid the price.”

“I WASN’T ELIGIBLE BECAUSE OF MY FELONY.”

“I’m watching the news, minding my business, and find out the same university that denied me just fired a professor with multiple felony convictions.

Make that make sense.”

Tanuke did what Tanuke always does, she got to work.

“That Wednesday, I went to the library and started researching how to start a nonprofit. I didn’t cry this time. I got curious. And three weeks later, I had the blueprint.”

“I built it by night, went to grad school by day, and hustled in between. I knocked on doors, partnered with other nonprofits, sat in rooms where no one expected me. And now?”

She smiles, the pride unmistakable.

“We’ve helped over 350 individuals find employment people who just needed a second chance. People like me. We’re thriving in underserved communities all over Harris County.”

Turns out, oral sex can change our natural balance down there. Saliva carries bacteria, which can disrupt vaginal pH, sometimes leading to bacterial vaginosis (BV) an entirely treatable condition that may just need a little attention if you notice itching or an increased discharge. As the editor of this magazine and the author of Not So Italian Nor Your Nonna’s Cooking book, this kitchen section is especially close to mine.

With flour-dusted pages and handwritten notes passed from one generation to the next, I’ve come to believe that recipes are more than ingredients they’re stories, they’re survival, they’re soul.

Roasted Cherry Tomato, Rosemary, and Garlic Focaccia: You know those recipes that make you feel like royalty in your own kitchen? This Roasted Cherry Tomato, Rosemary, and Garlic Focaccia is just that. It’ simple, it’s delicious, and it’s the kind of bread that makes you want to eat it straight from the oven (but try to save some for your guests!). Feel free to add your own twist, but here’s how I like to keep it simple and utterly irresistible. Enjoy while it’s hot, and remember, sharing is caring!

DIRECTIONS

INGREDIENTS - 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet) - 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 45°C) - 1 tablespoon sugar - 4 cups all-purpose flour - 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for drizzling - 1 tablespoon sea salt

1. Prepare the Dough: - In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water, then sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.

- Add the flour, 1/4 cup olive oil, and 1 tablespoon sea salt to the bowl. Mix until a dough forms.

- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with

3. Shape the Focaccia: - Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a generously oiled baking sheet or focaccia pan. Stretch and press the dough out to fit the pan, creating dimples all over the surface with your fingers.

4. Add the Toppings: - Arrange the roasted cherry tomatoes, garlic slices, and rosemary leaves
