Secretary bird The Secretary Bird, known as Ramolongwana in Setswana, is a large, terrestrial bird of prey found in open areas of plains and savanna country of Botswana and other parts of the sub-Saharan region.

Its English name, is believed to be derived from the Arabic phrase; saqr-et-tair which means, “hunter bird”.

The Secretarybird is instantly recognisable as a very large bird with an eagle-like body, on crane-like legs which increases its height to as much as 1.3 m tall.

The bird likes to feed on insects and small mammals, and has a particular penchant for snakes. The bird has a very peculiar method of hunting: using the thickened soles of their feet to stamp on its prey.

As the Nation’s proud carrier, Air Botswana brings the region to Botswana and Botswana to the region. Peolwane does the same, celebrating the adventure of travel, art, culture, food, style and business in this country. ALEXANDER FORBES RETIREMENT FUND The Alexander Forbes Retirement Fund (the fund) is the largest umbrella pension fund in Botswana, and is administered by Alexander Forbes Financial Services Botswana. The fund is a way for small to medium size companies to save money on behalf of their employees for their retirement.

ere, the cattle population exceeds that of people by two to one. There are somewhere between 2.5 to 2.8 million head of cattle in Botswana! Ranching is an integral part of the people’s lifestyle and ours is renowned for being beef of the highest quality and fullest flavour. It is no wonder this meat is consumed so widely and in many different ways. Learn more about some traditional methods beef has been prepared.

Serobe

Serobe is another traditional favorite in Botswana.

It is essentially known as tripe in other parts of the world and it is made from cooking the innards of a cow, sheep or goat until soft. The meat is cut smaller using scissors and spiced according to taste.

Seswaa

Seswaa is a national dish and is therefore a common meal served at weddings, funerals, and other celebrations. The ingredients to make it are very straightforward: meat on the bone, water, and salt. Traditionally seswaa is prepared in the three legged cast iron pots over open wood fire. The salt, added while the meat cooks, helps to soften the meat until it is ready to be pounded with a pestle and mortar.

Segwapa (biltong)

This is beef silverside that is air-dried and marinated to a traditional recipe of rock salt, pepper, coarsely ground coriander and vinegar; although ingredients, taste and production processes may differ. The meat is then air-dried and enjoyed as a snack once ready to consume.

he river runs through the Zambezi to the Indian Ocean and forms the borders of Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Ryan Blumton looks at the reasons why the Chobe region is an ideal destination of choice for your next vacation.

Proximity to Kasane Getting to the Chobe River from Kasane is an easy feat. Kasane lies on the south bank of the 200-300 meter wide river, so access to the from Botswana is usually made through this tourist town. Kasane is the perfect base from which to embark on a river safari.

The Chobe region ihas the largest concentration of elephants in the world, with an estimated population of 1s home to the worlds largets elephant population.

Boat Cruise on Chobe River The Chobe riverfront, also known as the Serondela area, lies at the north-eastern border of the Chobe National Park. Nearly every lodge along the Chobe River offers boat cruises, to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife population. These excursions, particularly the evening cruises, are incredibly tranquil experiences and are a highly recommended as part of any visit to the area.

Wildlife Along and In the Chobe River The Chobe River is a wildlife spotting paradise. During dry months (May through October) large herds of game migrate toward this lush waterway, making it a major animal watering spot for the region.

Elephants, giraffe and buffalo, along with many other animal species, can be seen grazing and watering on the banks and islands of the river. The Chobe River is also one of the most abundant sources of freshwater fish in Botswana, with over 90 species thriving in its waters.

Proximity to the Victoria Falls The Victoria Falls, where the waters of the Chobe River meet before becoming the Zambezi River, were given their English name by the colonial explorer David Livingstone, who dedicated it to Queen Victoria. He is written in history books as the person who “discovered” the falls. A more accurate description would be that he was the

first European to visit and publicize their existence to the rest of the world.

The original name of these magnificent waterfalls, given by the Lozi people who are indigenous to the area, is Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “the smoke that thunders.” The Victoria Falls have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1989.

T

hough male lions defend the pride’s territory, the lioness does most of the hunting. They work to surround and stalk prey, camouflaged in the savannah grassland before a sudden vicious attack leaving no room for escape. On average, the lioness runs is about 30% faster than the male lion.

To appreciate the sleek, beautiful and deadly lioness, take a trip to northern Botswana, a territory belonging as much to lions as it does to humans.

he Domboshaba Ruins, set among the Domboshaba Hills are the remains of an Iron Age stonewall site which was built during the Great Zimbabwe era in 1450AD-1690AD. It served as the capital of the Bakalanga tribal state known as Butua.

The ruins are along the Masunga Kalakamati road, 120 km northeast of Francistown.

It was once a significant trade centre as implied by the meaning of its name: “Dombo” means hill in iKalanga, while “shaba” means red hill. Indeed, the artifacts excavated at the Ruins include gold, copper, ivory, porcelain from China and India; pottery and bones. Many of the artefacts discovered here are under the curatorship of the Botswana National Museum.

The Ruins and area are of great cultural and historical significance to the BaKalanga people, whose existence here can be traced as far back as to AD 1000.

Strength of a Woman

Taking up space, means recognising your right to exist, being your authentic self, expressing opinions and speaking without apologising. This resonates in mind after an animated and heart-felt chat with Gaona Dintwe. She speaks with Tuduetso Tebape about media entrepreneurship, advocacy, finding her voice and the power of women supporting each other.

aona is an open and spirited being, whose presence commands attention and fills the room in a way that makes you want to lean in a bit closer to absorb some of her vibrant energy. It is no wonder she has won the hearts of many over the years as she developed in her career.

“I’m a broadcaster by profession with a BA in Communications & Media studies from Monash in South Africa.

I also worked on radio in 2006 at RB2 until 2014. From then, I also presented on the BTV Breakfast show and I also read the news on RB1. For the longest time, I was trying to find my comfort zone in the broadcasting space,” she said of her professional path leading up to today.

Of all these, Gaona says she had a certain affection for radio. Particularly because it isn’t scripted, it allows more engagement with people across the nation, with whom she could connect with from the heart.

“My radio show was very human centric and I wanted to tell human stories,” she says.

The impact she had on radio, is what Gaona attributes to her success at being selected as one of the members of the inaugural of the Mandela Washington Fellowship in 2014.

“I went to Yale University for six weeks and I interacted with some of the most inspiring people. Young people-some even younger than me, who were doing amazing things in the entrepreneurial space. I came back bitten by that bug.

I resigned from my job and set up my company Gaona Live. I wanted to explore the business side of media.”

Today, Gaona enjoys the freedom of being able to be in more control of the content she creates and the topics which she can touch on, without restriction.

“I wanted to own intellectual property, to have a sense of liberation and to create generational wealth, so I can build a legacy for my next generation.”

In her capacity as media entrepreneur, she is a speaker and corporate event facilitator and MC. In her work as executive producer of GaonaLive Productions, she helps people tell their stories of overcoming on various platforms, adding she strives to create premium content about Africa on various media platforms.

“I can tell stories which resonate with me. I can share stories that empower.”

After being diagnosed with endometriosis around March 2015, Gaona felt she had the responsibility to share her story with her audience. And so began her work in endometriosis and iinfertility advocacy. This role is almost an act of noble defiance against the cultural status quo, which doesn’t always take kindly to open discussion about topics such as infertility.

With the month of March also being commemorated as World Endometriosis Awareness month-Gaona, who works closely with the Botswana Endometriosis Foundation- is looking forward to participating in a public march to be held in Maun on the 28th of this month. Gaona is also planning to host Botswana’s first infertility forum later this year (dates still to be confirmed). She wants to engage people to talk more openly and honestly

Tapping into Africa’s Indigenous Plants for Skincare In honour of women’s month Ryan Blumton unearths the entrepreneurial journey of Tuduetso Tebape, founder of Nubian SeedTM. The company manufactures personal care products using raw, plant-based ingredients indigenous to the African continent. Tuduetso co-owns Nubian Seed with her sister Gorata Hlope, since establishment in 2016.

he Nubian Seed name originates from the metaphor used to as expression of Africa’s wealth and heritage and stems from the Nubian Civilization that existed in what is now Southern Sudan and Egypt.

What was it like when you first established the Nubian Seed brand?

How do you distinguish yourselves from competitors?

It began in an unstructured manner. We started in the cottage industry, selling at farmer’s markets. Prompted by the response from the local market, as well as our growing experience in this type of business, we then formed Nubian Seed, incorporating it as a PTY. LTD in August 2016.

We are authentic in who we are. Much as we do keep an eye on the competition, we try not to get distracted by what they are doing. We instead focus inward on who we are and what it is that we do, which helps us then translate into offering our unique product range with our unique formulations. Focusing on natural/organic products is the standard that we adhere to. We stay true to what it is that we say that we offer. Our unique selling points are our authenticity, that our ingredients will always be natural and sourced from around the African continent. Third, efficacy of the products for skincare sets ours apart.

How did you develop key partnerships?

We formed partnerships based on what we needed. Key partners for us are our suppliers, regulatory bodies and other entities that have assisted our growth and development. In selecting key partners as our suppliers we are definitely looking to the best and those who are committed as we are to natural/organic products.

In terms of regulatory bodies, we have to align ourselves with entities like BOBS (Botswana Bureau of Standards), BOMRA (Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority).

Development partners include De Beers, who have helped us to develop on the entrepreneurial side, through the Standford Go To Market Programme. Others which continue to help us are Botswana Innovation Hub (BIH), Brand Botswana, and BITC (Botswana Investment and Trade Centre).

Internationally we have cooperated with HIVOS, NEPAD and SANbio through its FemBioBiz program.

How do you want Nubian Seed to grow in the future?

We want to be among the top ten recognised and used cosmetics brands in Africa in the next ten years. Other ways we aim to grow, is by extending the customer segments we serve. Our

sustainability model will focus on seed oil processing, one day and tapping into local communities from where we extract raw materials.

Do you have many repeat customers and how important are they?

We have a lot of repeat customers.

These are very important people because these are the same people who help us with word-of-mouth advertising. A lot of people will call me and say that they learned of the brand from friends and could see the results of using Nubian Seed products and ask me to recommend something for them. So, our long-term customers become walking billboards for us so to speak. Because I take a very hands-on approach to running the business, I have established long-term relationships with repeat customers.

What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs?

I say, follow your passion. It does not necessarily have to begin as a business.

If it’s something that you cannot stop dreaming about, then you have to do it.

There is nothing that is perfect anywhere so don’t strive for that, instead strive to do your best

Ryan Blumton speaks with a duo of explorers, Mpuleng and Moagisi, also known as the Travel Dolls about their touring adventures.

Mpuleng: Being women, it’s important to reward ourselves for our hard work sometimes. It’s good if we can go out there and see what other women are doing in other countries. Also, travel creates compelling memories, broadens your appreciation of life.

Moagisi: Yes, we would say travel as much as possible! Don’t feel guilty about what you want out of life.

How did you meet and what inspired your love for travel?

Mpuleng: We met in school and have a shared love for travel. It is inspired by our desire to live against being ordinary, breaking from routine and seeing new places. We took our first trip in 2014 and dubbed it; “the Eastern Cape Odyssey’’. We travelled through the Eastern Cape from Port Elizabeth to East London via Grahamstown. That was the first time we went on a trip together.

Moagisi: We love new experiences and we share this in common. Our common interests make it easy for us to plan trips. We look for interesting places.

What advice would you give to young women who are too afraid to pursue their dream of travel?

Moagisi: People ask us all the time if we don’t get scared and how we do it, how can we afford it? I would say, “just go.”

There is nothing more rewarding that you can do for yourself than experiencing a new place. We try not to think of costs too much.

It is, after all, paying for an experience which lasts an entire lifetime. A dream of traveling is one well worth pursuing.

Travel enlightens, broadens your perspective of the world and gives the ability to better embrace and adapt to change.

What are some of the difficulties you have experienced in your travel adventures?

Mpuleng: Oh, do we have a story for you! We were once involved in a car accident which ended Moagisi in hospital. We had to think quickly. You are never prepared for things like that because you are far from friends and family. We were thrust into action out of necessity and ultimately, grew from the experience. You discover yourself and approach your potential.

Moagisi: There are some destinations which are difficult to visit because of the language and culture shock. This teaches you virtues such as patience and tolerance. You develop new attributes and strengthen your own characteristics.

Mpuleng: The world is so much larger than your immediate surroundings. The wider world is beautiful and offers variety in experiences. I think it’s mind-blowing that there are places which exist that are different from where you live. Immersing yourself in this new environment is priceless.

A Nation’s Pride: Morula Tree In 2014, Botswana’s Department of Forestry and Range Resources underwent an allimportant exercise, declaring certain flora and fauna indigenous to Botswana as national symbols. In doing so, the Morula Tree was deemed our National Tree.

A

little known fact this may be, it should come as no surprise.

The cultural significance and even economic value of the tree are not to be underestimated. Why is this highly valuable plant, with international recognition and acclaim so revered?

Which is it: Morula or Marula?

In Setswana, this tree is known as morula.

Its English name is marula and is the spelling likely to find in online search results, using that name. We, however, will refer to it using its traditional, Setswana name.

Facts about Morula With the scientific name of Sclerocarya birrea, it is indigenous to Botswana but it is also a widely distributed and spread indigenous fruit-bearing tree species throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa.

It is used by rural populations in most countries wherever it grows.

A paper authored by W. Mojeremane and S.O. Tshwenyane and published in the Journal of Biological Sciences, details facts about the tree.

“Archaeological evidence suggests that the fruit was known and consumed by humans in southern Africa as far back as 9 000 BC. It is a single stemmed tree belonging to the Anacardiacease family normally about 10 m tall. Fruits are round or oval and green when young, becoming butter-yellow and developing in clusters of three to five at the ends of twigs and always on new growth. On average each fruit is three to five cm in diameter. The stone is two to three cm long, with one to four cavities, each usually containing one seed. Seeds are small and fragile, covered with thin seed coat.”

The Varying Traditional Uses of Morula Tree In Botswana, it is a multipurpose tree whose fruits are eaten fresh or brewed to make beer and wine. The kernels are eaten or the oil extracted for use in personal care and in some instances, food preparation as well.

The leaves are grazed by livestock and have medicinal uses, as does the bark.

Although yet to be proven by modern science, the powdered bark is used to treat pregnant women to determine the

gender of an unborn baby. If a pregnant woman wishes to have a girl, she will take a preparation from the female plant and for a boy she will use the male plant.

Traditional healers use the hard nut in their divining dice. A decoction of the bark treats dysentery, diarrhoea, rheumatism and has a prophylactic effect against malaria. The bark is an excellent remedy for haemorrhoids. Roots and bark are also used as laxatives. A drink made from marula leaves is used for the treatment of gonorrhoea.

Final Words on Morula It goes almost without saying, that the Morula Tree is more than worthy of being named Botswana’s national tree. It is so widely used and has been for generations. Fortunately, as demonstrated by the development of Government initiatives and participation of local businesses, the Morula Tree will continue to have significance and impact, for years to come.

Traveling can be a stressful undertaking, made even more so if we add being late to it. Arriving late to check-in can leave you feeling flustered and irritable. Here are a few tips on how to make sure that you arrive at check-in on time, every time:

From the 1st April 2019, Botswana’s leading carrier began offering an online check-in service. You can now print your boarding pass from 24 hours prior to your departure, and have the flexibility to reserve or change your seat. Online check-in closes 50 minutes before flight departure for both domestic and international flights.

Pack everything you need in advance The morning of your afternoon flight is not the best time to pack! If possible, begin packing a couple of days in advance, so that on the day of your departure, you can include the last few, every-day items like toiletries or your favourite t-shirt. It is also important to ensure that you have all your important documents accounted for, like visas and health certificates.

Arrive early In order to avoid the ‘final sprint’ to the airport, be sure to leave ample time to allow yourself to make your way to the airport, and be on time for check-in. Just a note that international check-in closes 45 minutes and domestic check-in closes 30 minutes before departure.

Double-Check Your Departure Time Few things are more inconvenient than realizing that your flight is actually a couple of hours earlier than you thought it was! A few days before departure, be sure to check that you have the correct departure time, so that you can plan ahead.

Check In Online If possible, check in online so that you save yourself a few minutes. For Air Botswana, online check-in commences at least two hours before departure for domestic and international flights, and check in closes 45 mins before departure. Be sure to check the security tray for your items such as your cell phone, keys and reading materials!

Air Botswana accepts cargo for distribution to domestic and international destinations. In this edition, we try to answer some of the crucial questions associated with sending cargo shipments.

What is general cargo?

This refers to cargo without hazardous or dangerous properties. A distinct feature of general cargo is that it does not require precaution or special handling procedures. *General Cargo is not surcharged, only applicable rates apply when quoting.

FAQ FOR BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS What is my liability when sending cargo?

It is your responsibility (if you are the shipper) to ensure that proper packaging is adhered to, and all procedures followed, to enable smooth flow of transporting the packages to their final destination.

What is the carrier’s liability when transporting cargo?

A binding waybill consisting of carrier liabilities will be issued to you (the customer) at origin and you must ensure that you understand the contract. The carrier’s conditions of carriage include but are not limited to the loss or damage of shipments.

In case of damage, the recipient of the package must submit a written complaint to the carrier within 14 working days.

What guidelines should I follow when packing?

Proper packaging is a major priority to ensure that the goods arrive at their destination in a good state. Pieces are not supposed to exceed the maximum weight of 120kgs per piece for easy handling.

What is the time frame for delivery of cargo at the airport cargo terminal when sending?

General cargo must be delivered 2 hours before flight departure, as the sender needs time to process the waybills that accompany the shipment and settle the bill.

Air Botswana is flexible and can accommodate general cargo up to a day before if the consignment is booked on a morning flight.

What customs procedures must I follow for international shipments?

It is your responsibility to arrange customs clearance formalities with a clearing agent of your choice, as customs documents are a requirement for all cross-border shipments. All charges for clearing agents and customs duties are not part of Air Botswana’s freight charges.

What are the restrictions for sending cargo?

Each country has different rules and regulations for cargo acceptance. It is your responsibility to research and confirm the limitations before sending your cargo. Where permits (such as medical certificates for dogs, death certificates, export permits etc.) are required, it is your responsibility to source them and attach them to the shipment as proof for authorization to transport your package to its final destination.

here aren’t many people who can boast staying in a career which spans over five decades, beginning at the tender age of sixteen years old.

This, however, is a quick synopsis of Air Botswana’s newly appointed Technical Director, Engineering and Maintenance, Robert Bryant’s work background in the aviation industry.

Since January this year, Bryant has been settling in.

In the United Kingdom, which is Bryant’s birth country, there are two avenues one can take in preparation for future careers. It’s either one becomes an apprentice at the age of sixteen and remains one for four years; or waits until the age of eighteen to go to University to study for a degree. Bryant, eager to start his life and career it would seem, opted for the apprenticeship track in his career and has not looked back since.

“I was an engineering apprentice with BEA which is now British Airways.

I answered an advert for aircraft apprentices in London and I was lucky enough to get that,” says Bryant who has not looked back since he first whet his interest in pursuing a career in aviation.

Over the years which followed, Bryant has been engaged at airlines across the world- all in aircraft engineering management. He has held higher level positions such as

Superintendent, Regional General Manager and Director of Maintenance at several internationally acclaimed airlines. Before he began his duties at Air Botswana, Bryant has worked in airlines including; Air Malta, Qatar Airways, Spice Jet, Somon Air and Tag Angola Airlines, to name just a few.

As Technical Engineer at Air Botswana, Bryant’s work will fundamentally be focused on improving efficiency and ensuring adherence to international standards.

“My primary purpose is to maintain safety standards. To achieve that, the following of the established processes is important. Secondly, I will be focused on performance to ensure planes leave on time and in the right condition and thirdly, to ensure that costs are maintained within the budget of the airline,” says Byrant of his job description.

After fifty three years in the industry, one can safely bet that in being in the aviation industry, Bryant has found his life’s purpose.

“It has been my destiny to be in aviation and there is certainly no other industry I would rather be in than aviation. It’s one of those industries that if you are in, you never leave for two reasons: One, your qualifications are very specific to airplanes and secondly once you work on aircraft, nothing else is as exciting.”

Winner of the Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets, Dema’s collection, The Careless Seamstress, evokes the national and the subjective while reemphasising that what is personal is always political.

The girls and women in these poems are not mere objects; they speak, labor, and gaze back, with difficulty and consequence. The tropes are familiar, but in their animation they question and move in unexpected ways. The female body—as a daughter, wife, worker, cultural mutineer—moves continuously across this collection, fetching water, harvesting corn, raising children, sewing, migrating, and spurning designations.

Sewing is rendered subversive, the unsayable is weft into speech and those who are perhaps invisible in life reclaim their voice and leave evidence of themselves. As a consequence the body is rarely posed—it bleeds and scars; it ages; it resists and warns.

The female gaze and subsequent voices suggest a different value system that grapples with the gendering of both physical and emotional labor, often through what is done, even and especially when this goes unnoticed or unappreciated.

A body of work that examines the nature of power and resistance, The Careless Seamstress shows both startling clarity of purpose and capaciousness of theme. Using gender and labor as their point of departure, these poems are indebted to Dema’s relationship to language, intertextuality, and narrative. It is both assured and inquiring, a quietly complex skein that takes advantage of poetry’s capacity for the polyphonic.
