The Ostrich The ostrich (Struthio camelus) occurs throughout Botswana, with its habitats ranging from wetlands to semi desert. It is most prevalent in the Central Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans. It’s Setswana names are; Ntshe, Ntshwe, Mpshe, Mmampshe, Mmantshwe and Mmantshwe. It is the world’s largest bird, averaging 2.5 m in height and 145 kg in weight. It does not fly and is the fastest two-legged animal, running at speeds of up to 70 km/hr.

Ostrich eggs are larger than that of any other living bird. Though the ostrich does not fly, the bird uses its wings for balance and to cool itself.

Male ostriches have mostly black plumage, with some white on the wings and tail. The female is a greyish brown and immature are coloured like the females until about one year when they get their full adult plumage.

Ostrich lifetimes can range anywhere from forty to forty-five years!

he entire Dakar Rally experience was mind-blowing. Being one of the youngest competitors, I am truly grateful for this learning experience. I interacted with a lot of the racers there and was given good advice.

It was very inspirational.”

Brady Armstrong attended the renowned Rally for the first time this year. It’s a wonderful experience for any developing motorcycle racer. He is the pride of his local club.

In 2019, he won first class and second overall on the first day of the 1000km Toyota Kalahari Desert Race. In 2018, he was selected to race for Botswana

at the African Championship in the MX2 motocross class in South Africa.

Armstrong went to observe the Dakar Rally race as a member part of the Husqvarna team, which invited him.

Should my chance come to race at the next Dakar Rally, I will have the honour of racing under them.

“The owner, Henk Hellegers, gave me a tour of the cars and bikes on days when riders were out racing. He has a wealth of experience to share. I was told I needed to be sensitised and adapt to the experience of the Dakar Rally culture. That meant everything from understanding how riders eat, to the intricacies of how the race flows. This will help me focus so that when I do go next year, I’d already be used to it,” Armstrong said with excitement.

Armstrong also interacted with local racer, Ross Branch. It is obvious from the way his eyes light up with enthusiasm when he speaks about him, that he is one of his heroes.

“I really look up to Ross. He was my coach and always kept me motivated.

He has offered to work more with me. It is going to be an incredible opportunity. I definitely look up to him.”

Ross, another local motorcycle racer; represented Botswana exceptionally well. He won first place in the second stage of the race.

Armstrong also met with 2019 Dakar Rally winner Toby Price, Red Bull KTM star Sam Sunderland and Spanish Women’s Trial World Champion Laia Sanz.

Born and raised in Botswana, Armstrong has developed his talent from grassroots, here at home.

“My favorite place to race is Khawa.

I love racing on the sand dunes and offroad areas. I wish more people could witness the magnificent scenery I see around Botswana. I love this sport.

The future is certainly bright for young Armstrong. For all the exposure and opportunity he has been given in his career, he considers himself fortunate.

hamaga Pottery is a De Beers Sightholder sales partnership project; also known as Botswelelo Centre. It was established as a rural development project, with the help of the Roman Catholic mission in the early 1970s. Local women, many of whom have now accumulated years of experience, make all products on the potter’s wheel.

The clay creations are both decorative and have practical uses. Thamaga pottery also distributes its products in outlets across Botswana. Some products include statuettes, beakers, beer mugs, coffee mugs, wine goblets, teapots, bowls, vases, pizza plates and tea sets. Special orders are available upon request.

The Journey We arrivd in Maun from Gaborone via Air Botswana.

For the remainder of the trip until our return to Gaborone we would be chartered by Cessna via Major Blue Airlines. From Maun, we ventured towards Makgadikgadi Pans via safari car and later ventured through the rain towards uncharted tours’ Camp Kalahari. The next phase of our journey would take us into the Okavango Delta at Ker & Downey’s Shinde camp. After two days at Shinde, flew southwest to & Beyond’s Nxabega camp. Finally we headed to Kasane for the next stage that would include the Botswana Travel and Tourism Expo (BTTE).

Stoic Church in Serowe

T

his church was built in 1912 by the London Missionary Society (LMS) during the reign of Bangwato royal Khama III (18371923). The Chief is documented in history as the Ngwato chief who converted to Christianity and consequently had a significant influence on the intertwining of Christianity amongst the people of his tribe. The construction of the Church just ten years after the Bangwato capital was established in 1902, is therefore of cultural significance in this regard.

The church still stands, with much of its original material used to build it over 100 years ago, still in place.

Conservation Among & Beyond’s conservation efforts is the Rhinos Without Borders initiative.

Done in collaboration with Great Plains, & Beyond transports rhinos from places where there is high poaching activity to safer zones. It believes these translocations from countries like South Africa, for example, are the best way of ensuring the recovery of rhino populations.

Once identified and moved, locator devices are attached to the rhino to monitor and research their movement.

Botswana is selected as a translocation site thanks to its low incidences of poaching.

Ecological commitment & Beyond has a commitment to “Care of the land. Care of the wildlife. Care of the people.” It seeks to strike a balance between reducing environmental impact and providing the optimum guest experience. To this end, it strives to have a minimal environmental impact. he partnership was also aimed towards creating a tourist attraction and providing valuable skills to local youth.

The handcrafts produced at Thamaga pottery often feature traditional designs which were used to decorate the exterior of mud huts and floors. Merging the prospect of economic success, with a focus on traditional arts and crafts is a major accomplishment of this partnership.

Thamaga pottery is a female led cooperative, which has emerged as a competitive business. Among the mandates of the partnership with De Beers Group was extending the range of the type of pottery made to attract new markets. Another mandate was to attract students and youth to pottery making and design. Increasing Thamaga pottery’s capacity for the objective of sustainable was yet another mandate of the partnership.

De Beers Group refurbished the Thamaga pottery facilities. The institution has developed a major part of vocational skills development in Botswana and an effort to boost the manufacturing sector of Botswana.

Though Thamaga pottery is a non-profit organisation, proceeds from tours and sales go towards business development, support of other community projects in the area.

You can now print your boarding pass from 24 hours prior to your departure, and have the flexibility to reserve or change your seat. Online check-in closes 50 minutes before flight departure for both domestic and international flights.

Pack everything you need in advance The morning of your afternoon flight is not the best time to pack! If possible, begin packing a couple of days in advance, so that on the day of your departure, you can include the last few, every-day items like toiletries or your favourite t-shirt. It is also important to ensure that you have all your important documents accounted for, like visas and health certificates.

Arrive early In order to avoid the ‘final sprint’ to the airport, be sure to leave ample time to allow yourself to make your way to the airport, and be on time for check-in. Just a note that international check-in closes 45 minutes and domestic check-in closes 30 minutes before departure.

Double-Check Your Departure Time Few things are more inconvenient than realizing that your flight is actually a couple of hours earlier than you thought it was! A few days before departure, be sure to check that you have the correct departure time, so that you can plan ahead.

Check In Online If possible, check in online so that you save yourself a few minutes. For Air Botswana, online check-in commences at least two hours before departure for domestic and international flights, and check in closes 45 mins before departure. All you need to know about sending your cargo with Air Botswana Sending a shipment or package by cargo begins with understanding the type of cargo that is being sent. Air Botswana accepts cargo for distribution to domestic and international destinations. In this edition, we try to answer some of the crucial questions associated with sending cargo shipments.

What is general cargo?

This refers to cargo without hazardous or dangerous properties. A distinct feature of general cargo is that it does not require precaution or special handling procedures. *General Cargo is not surcharged, only applicable rates apply when quoting.

FAQ FOR BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS What is my liability when sending cargo?

It is your responsibility (if you are the shipper) to ensure that proper packaging is adhered to, and all procedures followed, to enable smooth flow of transporting the packages to their final destination.

What is the carrier’s liability when transporting cargo?

A binding waybill consisting of carrier liabilities will be issued to you (the customer) at origin and you must ensure that you understand the contract. The carrier’s conditions of carriage include but are not limited to the loss or damage of shipments.

In case of damage, the recipient of the package must submit a written complaint to the carrier within 14 working days.

What guidelines should I follow when packing?

Proper packaging is a major priority to ensure that the goods arrive at their destination in a good state. Pieces are not supposed to exceed the maximum weight of 120kgs per piece for easy handling.

What is the time frame for delivery of cargo at the airport cargo terminal when sending?

General cargo must be delivered 2 hours before flight departure, as the sender needs time to process the waybills that accompany the shipment and settle the bill.

Air Botswana is flexible and can accommodate general cargo up to a day before if the consignment is booked on a morning flight.

What customs procedures must I follow for international shipments?

It is your responsibility to arrange customs clearance formalities with a clearing agent of your choice, as customs documents are a requirement for all cross-border shipments. All charges for clearing agents and customs duties are not part of Air Botswana’s freight charges.

What are the restrictions for sending cargo?

Each country has different rules and regulations for cargo acceptance. It is your responsibility to research and confirm the limitations before sending your cargo. Where permits (such as medical certificates for dogs, death certificates, export permits etc.) are required, it is your responsibility to source them and attach them to the shipment as proof for authorization to transport your package to its final destination.
