World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

About WED 2016 Theme This year’s theme for WED – Go Wild for Life – encourages you to celebrate all those species under threat and take action of your own to help safeguard them for future generations. This can be about animals or plants that are threatened within your local area as well as at the national or global level - many local extinctions will eventually add up to a global extinction!

Whoever you are, and wherever you live, show zero-tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife in word and deed, and make a difference.

Why to Celebrate WED? EVERY ACTION COUNTS When we see or experience the negative effects of climate change, environmental degradation or resource depletion it is easy to blame others governments for not prioritising environmental policy; corporate organisations for raising greenhouse gas emissions; NGOs for not lobbying strongly enough for the environment; and individuals for not taking action.

World Environment Day however is a day we put aside our differences and instead celebrate the achievements we’ve made towards protecting the environment. By celebrating WED, we remind ourselves and others of the importance of caring for our environment. Remember that every action counts, so join us: every year, everywhere, everyone!

Each live gorilla is bringing Uganda about $1 million per year in tourism revenues, while Rwanda, famous for its mountain gorillas made $304 million in eco-tourism in 2014, a $10 million incr ease over 2013.

The World Environment Day (WED) logo is a vibrant visual combination of the promising sustainable relationship between human beings and the environment, so as not to jeopardise the needs of future generations. It encapsulates the conservation, protection, enhancement and support of nature and natural resources, including biological diversity.

Background Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development that is coupled with unsustainable lifestyles. Today, humanity uses the equivalent of 1.6 planets to provide the resources we use and absorb our waste. This means it now takes the Earth one year and six months to regenerate what we use in a year. By 2050, if lifestyles continue on the same trajectory, with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.

The Fingerprint Living within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future.

The WED logo is therefore a fingerprint that resides within a circle – the world. The colours in the fingerprint represent diversity, not only of people but of the ecosystem. Essentially, the fingerprint is a representation of individuality.

Celebrating WED is about the inspirational power of individual actions that, collectively, become an exponential force for positive change.

Protecting wild animals and ecosystems would benefit tourism, which brought sub Saharan Africa over $36 billion and contributed over 7% of its GDP in 2012.
