Keeping your website secure

In today’s digital world, small business websites face growing risks from cyber-attack. It’s crucial to have adequate protections in place to keep your data secure, maintain customer trust, and ensure your business stays online. This fact sheet sets out common online threats and straightforward steps you can take to protect your website against them

Common threats to small business websites

Domain name system (DNS) abuse involves the use of domain names to carry out malicious activity This includes botnets, malware, phishing, pharming and spam (where it is used to carry out one of the other forms of DNS abuse)

Small business and not-for-profit websites are most commonly affected by phishing and malware attacks. An example is a ransomware attack, where malicious software encrypts your files and a cyber criminal demands a ransom payment in exchange for restoring access.

Protect your website security using the ‘five Ps’

Use a complex and unique passphrase that can’t be easily guessed to access the content management system (CMS), backend, or Admin page of your website.

Add an extra layer of security by enabling multi-factor authentication Never share your passphrases or use the same passphrase for more than one account

DNS abuse rates in .au are very low, less than

0.0002%

making it one of the most secure domains globally DNS abuse cases that do occur in .au are almost always a result of hacked small business or not-for-profit websites with poor security, emphasising the need to have adequate protections in place to secure your website

Apply updates and security patches to your CMS, including plugins, as soon as they become available.

Put in place a vulnerability scanner that automatically patches vulnerabilities

Regularly update your website’s content management system (CMS), plugins, and any other software you use, as outdated software can be vulnerable to security threats.

Conduct regular security audits of your website, scanning for vulnerabilities, checking for outdated software, and reviewing access logs. Periodically review your website settings to ensure they haven’t been tampered with.

Back up your website and customer or member data regularly Ransomware attacks often involve encrypting a victim’s data and demanding payment for its release With regular backups, you have the option to restore your data without yielding to criminal demands

Use free online tools such as Google Safe Browsing, Sucuri SiteCheck or Mozilla Observatory to conduct regular security checks of your website Set up a web application firewall to filter and block common cyber threats

Remove third-party integrations and permissions that are no longer in use

Ensure your website has a valid Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate installed SSL certificates encrypt the data transmitted between a user’s browser and your website’s server This encryption ensures that sensitive information such as login credentials, personal details, and payment information remains confidential and secure You can purchase an SSL certificate from an authorised certificate authority, usually as an annual subscription

Restrict CMS access to your website only to individuals who need it

Be cautious of phishing emails or messages that may attempt to trick you into revealing your login details or other sensitive information

Always verify the authenticity of communication –be it from your domain name or web hosting provider or another provider such as a bank or postal service –by contacting the relevant party separately
