Get a Head Start on your Education
If you’re a high school student who knows college is in your future, you may be able to get a head start, saving you time and money.
With the Dual Enrollment Program and AP credits, you can save on your overall tuition, and in some cases, cut the amount of time spent in college. We also offer other campus programs and perks to better prepare you for college. This guide provides an overview of the ways you can be ahead in your college career at PennWest.
If you worked hard and have achieved a 3.0 or higher in high school, you already understand what it takes to make the grade at a university.
At PennWest, you may take 1 course each term in our Dual Enrollment Program. An additional course may be added with permission.
In order to apply to the Dual Enrollment Program, you must be in your junior year or going into your junior year or senior year of high school. Sophomore-level eligibility is on a conditional basis.
To apply, go to PennWest.edu/apply and choose options from the drop-down menu:
• Select undergraduate.
• Select a campus and type as Dual Enrollment.
• Students also should submit a copy of their high school transcript, as well as a parental consent form and financial terms and conditions form.
Typical courses high school students take are general education courses in English, history, math, sciences and social sciences. Classes are available online or at one of our three great campuses.
The deadline to apply to this unique opportunity is May 1 for the summer and fall semesters and Dec. 1 for the spring semester.
The cost for Dual Enrollment is about $100 per credit for Pennsylvania residents and $150 for non-residents. Additional fees may apply.
Advanced Placement courses are taken at your high school while you’re still in high school. You are then tested on your knowledge and given a score after completing the course.
PennWest accepts Advanced Placement scores of 3 or greater for most of the AP courses the College Board offers.
PennWest recognizes the IB Diploma Programme which is an academically challenging program for students in their high school years. Only certain high schools participate. Participating students should contact the Admissions office regarding what credits can be awarded.
Did you know that PennWest has made a commitment to students from Pittsburgh Public Schools to help them achieve their dream of a college education? As a preferred college partner, we committed $2,500 per year for Pittsburgh Promise Students attending PennWest and living in on-campus housing.
The Promise Award can be combined with other PennWest scholarships, grants, and awards Including the PennWest merit scholarship and the Board of Governors Award as long as the cost of attendance is not exceeded. The Promise Award is not need-based and does not take a family’s income into consideration.
