In this our 25th Anniversary season, we mark the passing of the two great men without whom this organization would not exist: William Shakespeare and our own founder, Fr. Gerard J. Schubert, OSFS. 400 years ago, the world bid adieu to the man whose works would profoundly shape the world’s very capacity for thought, expression, and understanding of being human. Shakespeare theatres and others the world over celebrate with us this year in honoring the man whose plays were written “not of an age, but for all time.”

Then this past December, we said good night to a sweet prince and prayed that flights of angels would sing him to his rest. “He was my friend, faithful and just to me,” and in that I am not alone. His life inspired so many.

Fr. Schubert was one-of-a-kind. He founded and ran the Festival for its first 10 years and we have stood squarely on his shoulders to create the PSF you find today, one of only a handful of professional theatres on the continent with such a broad range of offerings and that allows patrons to see them all within a few visits or a few weeks’ time.

We spent the last few months mourning Fr. Schubert’s passing. Now it’s time to celebrate his life, his spirit, and his passion for the theatre through this year’s productions. It is an honor to dedicate this momentous anniversary season to him.

Whether you glimpse the machinations in the corridors of power in Julius Caesar, or you are one of the lucky many who will get a ticket to the Shakespeare-inspired musical West Side Story before it sells out, or you savor the three comedies from Messrs. Coward and Shakespeare, or best yet, enjoy them all, you will be sharing in the gift, the light of inspiration and joy Fr. Schubert envisioned for decades before founding PSF in 1991.

Notes from the President of DeSales University Twenty-five years ago, Fr. Jerry Schubert willed the creation of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. I would like to share the sermon that I preached at his funeral Mass this past year.

F

r. Jerry Schubert would be very happy today­—he loved a “standing room only” audience! And we Oblates of St. Francis de Sales along with the members of Fr. Jerry Schubert’s family are very comforted to see such an outpouring of affection for our friend.

Like so many natural fathers, he soon realized that his little family was in need of a new home. So he started planning for the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts. He could access all of the building genius of his father. He knew what to do.

His mighty passion was unleashed upon this new project. He marshalled his skills to raise the money, imagine the spaces, design the structure, and consult the experts. He had to provide for the needs of his two small children. His building was an act of fatherly love: God the Father, his own father, and Fr. Schubert working in unison.

The new home was barely completed when he had twins: the television and the film programs. While his two older children continued to enjoy his wise counsel and fatherly affection, his energy was now shared with the faculty and facility for these new programs. Eventually he had to construct an addition onto the house. Each child, however, continued to enjoy his attention. He never missed their performances. He was always ready with suggestions for improvement and wise insights into character development of the stage person and the real person.

Fr. Schubert was deeply committed to being FATHER Schubert. He considered his priesthood to be one of God’s greatest gifts to him. And he considered the challenges of priesthood essential to his life. He wanted to be a good FATHER. Part of this love for family came naturally to him because of his experiences at home. His mother, Mary Elizabeth, and father, Frederick, were certainly family people. They worked hard to provide for their six children. His father was a builder. Some of the most beautiful churches of Philadelphia were constructed by him. They were firmly planted in Mother Earth but reached for the heavens with their majestic towers. God certainly was present in the Schubert home.

Twenty-five years ago this summer, his final child appeared: The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. This was the final step in his grand design of not only preparing fine young artists for their future work but of actually immersing them in professional theatre as they prepared for graduation. This was an immense act of creation. In many ways he had been preparing for this during his entire career. The strength of imagination and will required to create the excellence of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival is a true testament to his faith in the power of God.

It is no surprise then that when Jerry arrived at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales after completing his doctorate in theatre from the University of Denver he was ready for action.

He was fully prepared to be FATHER Schubert. And so he gave birth to his first child—our theatre program.

All of the Schubert children are doing fine. They are solidly Catholic and richly beautiful. We can only imagine the Heavenly Father opening his arms to welcome Fr. Schubert to his true home with the words: “Well done good and faithful servant…the kingdom has a room prepared for you from the foundations of the world. Thank you for giving beauty back.”

He was so successful in sharing his vision, his energy, and his creative genius that the child grew rapidly. Fr. Schubert fed his creation, nurtured each aspect of its formation, and carefully watched over its maturation. Soon a second child appeared— the dance program. Women were added to the young campus of Allentown College. Music and dance were now a part of the vitality of the campus. And Fr. Schubert embodied the determined strength of his successful father and the gentle spirit of his mother as he looked after his little family. He learned well the virtues of our great patron of St. Francis de Sales: bold strength and humble gentleness.

PENNSYLVANIA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

1992

Inaugural season. Fr. Gerard J. Schubert, OSFS, founds the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival on the campus of DeSales University, then Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, and directs The Taming of the Shrew. Romeo and Juliet is directed by Russell Treyz and features the fight choreography by Rick Sordelet—now a leading Broadway fight director with 62 Broadway shows, 53 international credits, plus opera, film, and television credits. The season also featured a children’s show, Pinocchio, and The Green Show.

1993

James Kiberd, star of All My Children and the first in a line of television and film actors playing leading roles at PSF, headlines as Macbeth.

Sold-out crowds set an attendance record at 93%—a Main Stage record that held until 2015 when Les Misérables played to 103% capacity.

1994

Bob Phillips, art director at Sesame Street, and now sixtime Emmy award winner, designs scenery for his first of many productions at PSF. In the fall, François McGillicuddy joins the Festival as managing director, PSF’s first full-time, year-round employee.

1995

Greg Wood plays Hamlet, and the Festival adds a fourth production, The Glass Menagerie, its first non-Shakespeare world classic, in the Arena (now Schubert) Theatre.

1996

The Pennsylvania Senate designates PSF as the Official Shakespeare Festival of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Wood performs the “To be or not to be” speech on the steps of The Capitol. That summer, Jim Helsinger stars in The School for Wives.

1997

The Bravo channel produces an hour-long special with PSF as the sole subject. The Allentown Arts Commission honors PSF with the award for Outstanding Achievement in the Performing Arts.

1998

The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Dennis Razze,

is attended by an audience of nearly 9,000—setting a record for the highest attendance of a non-children’s show. The record held until last season’s completely sold out production of Les Misérables, attended by 10,678.

1999

The Festival adds a fifth major production with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).

2000

PSF launches the annual fall Linny Fowler WillPower Tour to middle schools and high schools with a production of Romeo and Juliet.

The Tour has since reached more than 160,000 students in 40 Pennsylvania counties, plus schools in New Jersey and Delaware.

2001

Fr. Schubert retires and begins the first endowment campaign for PSF. Jack Young is the new artistic director.

2002

For the first time, three Shakespeare plays are produced in one season—something not repeated until 2011, PSF’s 20th anniversary.

2003

In the fall, Patrick Mulcahy is named producing artistic director and Dennis Razze is named associate artistic director.

2004

Casey Gallagher, now managing director, joins the leadership team. PSF produces its first musical, Man of La Mancha (directed

by Razze) and posts a 33% increase in attendance over the previous season.

2005

PSF receives its first grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Mulcahy directs Henry V, Part 1 featuring Michael Tylo and John Ahlin.

2006

Lee A. Butz, PSF’s official photographer since its inception, is honored with the Will Shakespeare Award at the annual gala. The award is an extremely rare page from Shakespeare’s 1623 First Folio. PSF begins six consecutive seasons in the black for the first time in a decade.

2007 2008

Steve Burns returns to PSF in the title role of Amadeus.

The Festival produces two colossal works simultaneously, Cyrano de Bergerac on the Main Stage featuring Greg Wood, and King Lear in the Schubert Theatre featuring Christopher Coucill.

2009

PSF develops its most comprehensive strategic plan to date, setting Vision 2030 in motion, aiming to produce world-class theatre.

Mulcahy directs Antony & Cleopatra, the 23rd of Shakespeare’s 38 plays produced at PSF. The Festival adds Shakespeare for Kids to its summer offerings.

2010

Broadway fight director Rick Sordelet returns to PSF to direct Romeo & Juliet. Jim Helsinger returns to the stage as actor and director in The Merry Wives of Windsor.

2011

BEGINNING OF THE SIX PLAY FORMAT

William Michals plays Emile DeBecque in South Pacific at PSF, just months after playing the same role on Broadway at Lincoln Center. Emmy nominee Marnie Schulenburg returns to play opposite him as Nellie Forbush. PSF offers its first season with six major productions and two productions, Hamlet and Pride & Prejudice, in repertory with the same cast performing in different plays on the same day. The Festival’s production of The Two Noble Kinsmen is featured and reviewed in a half page article in The Washington Post Sunday arts section.

2012

Dee Roscioli, (Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway) plays Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. Tony Award winner Victoria Clark performs a solo concert.

2013

YEARS

PSF is featured in The New York Times Summer Stages issue and produces its 25th and 26th of Shakespeare’s 38 plays. PSF launches

2015

The Campaign for Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival to raise $3.5 Million in capital and endowment funds to help fulfill Vision 2030.

2014

PSF sets multiple revenue and attendance records—only to be shattered the very next year.

2016

L e s Mi s é ra b l e s i s a s i n g u l a r, spectacular sensation lauded by critics and audiences—and every one of its 22 performances completely sells out. Dennis Razze’s direction is described as “a masterpiece.” Howard Shapiro of WHYY/ Newsworks wrote, “The stupendous version of Les Misérables … certifies the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival as one of the region’s major producer’s of musicals.” The Festival successfully completes The Campaign for Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, raising more than $4 million.

25TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

Emmy nominee Keith Hamilton Cobb and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) winner Linda Thorson join the acting company. Supporters and champions of PSF since its inception, Kathleen Kund Nolan and Timothy E. Nolan serve as season sponsors for the third time in the Festival’s history. DeSales University President Fr. Bernard O’Connor, OSFS, receives the Will Shakespeare Award for his steadfast support of the Festival, its role in the community, and “to give Beauty back.”

Pre-Show Prologues

Become a Shakespearean Scholar in 30 Minutes or Less

ou don’t need to be a Shakespearean scholar to enjoy an evening at PSF. In fact, you don’t even need to read the plays—although we definitely recommend that you do! But if it’s been a few years since you’ve cracked open Julius Caesar or you just haven’t gotten around to reading Love’s Labour’s Lost yet, don’t let it stop you from checking them out on the PSF boards. And if you’ve been sticking to our non-Shakespearean offerings thinking that the Bard is too difficult (I’m looking at you, Dad), then this is my personal invitation to you.

Around here, the term “Prologue” refers to both the lines spoken by the chorus at the beginning of a play and our free and informal pre-show discussions.

Sponsored by Drs. Paul and June Schlueter, these Prologues are led by me or a member of the PSF artistic staff, start about 45 minutes before every Shakespeare play, and are designed to introduce you—the audience—to the play you are about to see.

We’ll start with the essentials—the who, what, when, where and why of the play—and establish the basic storyline.

We’ll talk about where the play falls in the canon and how it compares to Shakespeare’s other plays or reflects what was happening in his life when he wrote it. We’ll also talk a little bit about what was going on in the world at the time the play was written. Shakespeare’s first audience didn’t need anyone to explain the cultural significance of the events or characters in his plays, but most of us in the 21st century could use a refresher course in English history. Shakespeare and his audience knew exactly why Shakespeare might have decided to take a closer look at the politics of ancient Rome, and talking about what such events meant to an Elizabethan Englishman can help us tap into the political and emotional undercurrents of the play.

I’ll also discuss the artistic process and share with you some of the directorial and design choices that guide the look and feel of the production. We’ll explore why we’ll decided to do these plays in the summer of 2016 and maybe link them to the headlines of the evening news.

After that, we might discuss anything that makes the specific play at hand so special. Maybe we’ll delve into that Mark Antony’s “Friends, Romans, Countrymen” speech that is a veritable masterclass in rhetoric. I can help you keep track of the lovers whose labour’s are lost. Maybe we’ll chat about famous productions or reminisce about the last time The Taming of the Shrew was performed on the PSF stage. Perhaps something will be of particular interest to you and that evening’s discussion will focus on the aspects of the play you find most exciting. By the end of the discussion, my hope is that you can appreciate why we, the artists, are so passionate about these stories and think they are worth telling 400-some years after they were first written. We love these plays and want to make it easier for you, the modern audience member, to enjoy everything Shakespeare has to offer—without worrying about whether you’ll be able to remember the characters’ names or follow the plot.

So come on in! Give it a try! There will NOT be a quiz and you can leave your No. 2 pencils at home. I’ll do all the research for you so you can appreciate the play like a Shakespearean insider—without logging hours at the library.

The Great Divorce

By Anthony Lawton Based on the novel by C.S. Lewis Monday, June 27, 7:30 p.m., Main Stage Tony Lawton has adapted C.S. Lewis’ novella, The Great Divorce, into an 80-minute, solo performance.

The play is the story of Clive, who, along with a motley crew of malcontents, takes a bus ride from hell to heaven. They are

offered a chance to stay in heaven forever if they like, but the choice between joy and miserable loneliness proves to be much harder than they would have guessed. The piece is a feast of rich language, profound psychological insight, and humor. Lawton performs the play solo, portraying more than a dozen characters.

Julius Caesar Synopsis

A

t the height of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar returns to Rome in triumph after defeating his enemy, Pompey. Caesar’s popularity soars and he is offered a crown three times by Marc Antony, which he refuses. Fearing that Caesar’s growing power and ambition threatens Roman liberty, Cassius, a nobleman and general in Caesar’s army, convinces the honorable and reluctant Brutus to lead a conspiracy of like-minded Senators, and on the Ides of March they stab and kill Caesar at the Senate House.

his emotional eulogy, including reading Caesar’s will to the people, to turn the citizens of Rome against the conspirators.

Brutus and Cassius are driven out of Rome. In the city, a triumvirate of Antony, Octavius, and Lepidus forms to avenge Caesar’s death, killing more than 100 senators, and to bring the conspirators to justice.

At Sardis, Brutus and Cassius join their armies to face the forces of the Triumvirate. They are defeated at Philippi by the legions under the command of Antony and Octavius.

Rather than return humiliated to Rome and face the angry public, the conspirators choose suicide as the final repercussion for their actions. Antony remarks that Brutus acted in honesty and for the common good as, “the noblest Roman of them all.”

Marc Antony arrives and beholds the carnage. He seems to reconcile with the faction but when left alone with Caesar’s body, vows revenge. Over Cassius’s objections, Brutus allows Marc Antony to speak at Caesar’s funeral. After Brutus makes his case to the people and then departs, Antony uses

The Taming of the Shrew Synopsis

B

aptista Minola, a wealthy merchant of Padua, has decided that the time has come for her two eligible daughters to marry. However, while the young, seemingly submissive Bianca enjoys the attention of many suitors, her sister Kate scares men away with her notoriously sharp tongue. Baptista contrives to use Bianca’s popularity by refusing to allow her to wed until Kate has married. Bianca’s suitors conspire to get Kate wed as soon as possible.

disguises himself as a Latin tutor in order to spend time with Bianca—while his servant Tranio disguises himself as Lucentio to negotiate with Baptista for Bianca’s hand.

Meanwhile, Baptista allows Petruchio to woo and wed Kate, despite her protestations. Following the service, Petruchio drags his bride from the wedding feast to his country home.

During their “honeymoon,” Petruchio attempts to tame Kate’s shrewish ways by withholding food and sleep.

The first, Hortensio, discovers an old friend, Petruchio, recently arrived from Verona and is scouting for a rich wife. Intrigued by Hortensio’s description of Kate (and her wealth), Petruchio agrees to court her. In exchange, Petruchio helps Hortensio secretly woo Bianca by presenting him to Baptista in the disguise of a music teacher for Bianca.

Back in Padua, Lucentio disguises a wandering Pedant as his father, Vincentio, wins Baptista’s favor, and secretly weds Bianca, just as the real Vincentio arrives! Lucentio and Bianca are reconciled with their families. Hortensio, having lost Bianca, marries a rich widow. Kate and Petruchio return to celebrate all three nuptials in a grand feast—where Kate astonishes the company with her loving behavior.

Lucentio, a young nobleman and scholar, arrives in Padua and is instantly infatuated with the beautiful Bianca. He

Love’s Labour’s Lost Synopsis

R

eturning home from the wars, King Ferdinand of Navarre has asked his closest friends Berowne, Longaville, and Dumaine to join him in devoting themselves to study for three years. In this “little academy,” he asks them to take a difficult oath that includes avoiding women, and stipulates that “No woman shall come within a mile of [his] court.” Berowne reminds the King that they will all have to break their oath not to see a woman, as the Princess of France has traveled to Navarre with her ladies on behalf of her sick, elderly father.

Meanwhile, Don Armado pines for Jaquenetta with moody music and poetry. Don Armado decides to give Costard his freedom if he delivers a love letter to Jaquenetta. On the way, Costard meets Berowne, who has decided to go against his oaths to the King, employing Costard to deliver his letter to his beloved Rosaline.

Out in the fields, the Princess and ladies pass the time by hunting deer. Costard arrives and, having confused the love letters, gives the one from Don Armado to Rosaline. The ladies laugh at the convoluted love letter, quickly realizing the error.

PSF typically rehearses each production six days a week for three and a half weeks. In contrast, we believe Elizabethan actors memorized their lines and prepared their characters outside of rehearsals and rehearsed fights, dances, and songs just days before the first performance.

Having witnessed the hunt, the intellectuals Holofernes and Sir Nathaniel expound on deer and other topics as Jaquenetta and Costard enter with Berowne’s letter. Sir Nathaniel reads them the poem. Once they discover it has been written by Berowne, Holofernes and Sir Nathaniel decide to bring this matter to the King.

For this production, the actors arrived with their lines learned, rehearsed for a few days, staged the play themselves, wore what they could find, and opened in less than a week. There is no director—the position didn’t exist in 1608—and no designers in the conventional sense.

Back within the King’s Academy, Berowne is struggling to write his next love poem. He hides when he sees the King approaching and witnesses the King also struggle to write a

LEONARD BERNSTEIN (Composer, West Side), composer, conductor, educator, and pianist, was among the first conductors born and educated in the U.S. to receive worldwide acclaim. His scores include On the Town, Candide, Wonderful Town, and On the Waterfront. He earned a host of international conducting prizes, Grammy, and Tony Awards throughout his career. He believed in the power of artistic expression to help build community in the face of social upheaval. Alex is a Certified Teacher and Theatrical Firearms Safety Instructor with the Society of American Fight Directors, a two-time Barrymore Award nominee, and was featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Project Discovery” series Careers in the Arts: Fight Director, and his choreography is currently on file at The Lincoln Center in New York.

NOËL COWARD (Playwright, Blithe) Born to a working class family in London, Coward (1899-1973) became an internationally-renowned playwright, composer, director, actor, and singer, known as ‘The Master’ by many of his contemporaries and fans. On Coward’s 70th birthday, Lord Louis Mountbatten said: “There are probably greater painters than Noël, greater novelists than Noël, greater librettists, greater composers of music, greater singers, greater dancers, greater comedians, greater tragedians, greater stage producers, greater film directors, greater cabaret stars, greater TV stars. If there are, they are 14 different people. Only one man combined all 14 labels—‘The Master.’”

LINDA DAUGHTERY (Playwright, Mermaid) has had her plays produced at The Kennedy Center and at theatre companies around the country, and national touring productions of her plays have been presented in more than 150 cities in 41 states. More than 20 of Ms. Daugherty’s plays have premiered at the Dallas Children’s Theater, named as one of the country’s top five children’s theaters by Time magazine. As an actress, she has appeared on Broadway, at The Manhattan Theater Club, and in regional theaters including the Ivanhoe Theater in Chicago (Jefferson Award nomination), Seattle Repertory Theater, and the Dallas Children’s Theater.

DIEHL (Musical Director/ Conductor West Side Story) returns to PSF for his sixth season, having most recently conducted Les Misérables. At DeSales, Nathan has musical directed, conducted, and accompanied more than a dozen Act 1 productions. As an educator, he teaches elementary music and serves as music department coordinator at Moravian Academy in Bethlehem. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Moravian College and a Master of Music degree from West Chester University.

MIKE ELDRED (Tenor, Main Stage Concert) is one of America’s most beloved tenors. He appeared as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway and across the U.S. (Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, Schermerhorn Symphony Hall, and Aspen Theatre). He was on Broadway in the original cast of the Tonynominated The Civil War. He performed in the 25th anniversary national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, and starred as “The Tenor” in the national concert tour of Handel’s Messiah Rocks. Eldred’s starring role as Tony in the Nashville Symphony’s production of

West Side Story (NAXOS International) has earned praise as “arguably the best ‘Tony’ on record”. Eldred has performed in concert with most of North America’s finest symphony orchestras.

ELIZABETH ELLIOTT (Lighting Designer, Mermaid) has been the resident lighting designer for DeSales University’s theatre department since 2007. Over the years, Liz has designed lighting in New York City, Philadelphia, Ohio, Michigan, Utah, as well as internationally. For PSF, Liz has designed Rapunzel, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty.

Casey has also been treasurer for the Shakespeare Theatre Association, director of audience services for The People’s Light & Theatre Company, a board member for Civic Theatre of Allentown, a peer panelist for the New Jersey Council on the Arts and a judge for the Greater Philadelphia Barrymore Awards for excellence in theatre. As PSF celebrates 25 years, Casey wishes to thank the more than 700 actors and more than 1,000 other artists, administrators, and technicians who have worked at the Festival over the years as well as the almost 100 board members and countless Guild volunteers who have contributed to the Festival’s longevity. Landed an interview with Fr. Gerard J. Schubert in July 1990 with experience in journalism, agriculture, and seven years of administrative and marketing roles in professional theatre. While working as director of marketing and public relations at what was then Allentown College’s performing arts department, she drafted the founding documents and helped design and build the marketing and communications architecture for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. ERIC HISSOM* (Grumio, Shrew; Dr. Bradman u/s, Blithe) has appeared at PSF in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, A Man for All Seasons, The Tempest, Around the World in 80 Days, Pericles, and King John.

Recent credits include: The Body of an American at Theater J in Washington D.C., Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at Arena Stage, Equivocation at the Arden Theatre, the world premier of Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot at Cleveland Playhouse, and the national tour of The 39 Steps. He has an MFA from Florida State University’s Asolo Conservatory.

KATE INGRAM (Dialect Coach, Blithe) is associate professor and graduate acting program coordinator at University of Central Florida. A professional actress and director, she has taught acting, Shakespeare, dramatic literature, and voice and speech for nearly three decades. She is an active member of VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association) and proud member of Actors

Equity Association. She has performed at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater as Desiree in A Little Night Music, as Gertrude in Hamlet, and works as a dialect/speech coach for many companies, including Universal Orlando’s Harry Potter attraction, Diagon Alley. It was a joy to work as dialect coach with the cast of Act 1’s Me & My Girl this past spring!

LOUIS JANNUZZI III (Publius/Clitus/ Ensemble, Caesar) will be a senior musical theater major next year at DeSales. PSF credits include Les Misérables and the Fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof. Most recently at DSU, he was cockney charmer Bill Snibson in Me & My Girl.

Marla is the resident costume designer for People’s Light, where she has designed 100+ productions. MELISSA KERR (Director of Development) is inspired by the stories and generosity of PSF’s many friends and donors.

An alumnus of DeSales University and PSF, Melissa returns to the Festival with experience in both higher education and non-profit administration, having served most recently on the development staff at Tony-award-winning McCarter Theatre Center and at Lafayette College. A member of AFP, her work also includes volunteer service with Bucks County Playhouse and Easton Main Street Initiative. Melissa and her husband Joe live in downtown Easton.

ARIANNA KNAPP (Projection Supervisor, West Side) is the vice president of SenovvA, Inc. (www.senovva.com) and a director of SenovvA Europe. She brought four shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival including

two original musicals. Her work as video production supervisor brought her to The Ahmanson Theatre in L.A., The Royal Alexandra in Toronto, Berkeley Rep in California, the Alliance in Atlanta, and Center Stage in Baltimore. Arianna served as the artistic director of North Shore Music Theatre (NSMT) for three years in Beverly, Mass. Broadway credits include American Idiot, Bring It On and Something Rotten.

NYU CAP21 ARTHUR LAURENTS (Book, West Side) playwright, stage director, and screenwriter, began his career writing radio scripts and then training films for the U.S. Army during World War II. In addition to West Side Story, he wrote Gypsy, Anyone Can Whistle, and Do I Hear a Waltz? He directed the Broadway productions of I Can Get It for You Wholesale and La Cage aux Folles, which earned him a Tony for Best Direction. Laurents wrote the novels, The Way We Were and The Turning Point, which he developed into screenplays that became successful films. The Turning Point earned him a Golden Globe Award, the Screen Writers Guild Award, and the Writers Guild of America Award.

ANTHONY LAWTON* (Don Adriano de Armado, Love’s LL) has acted in Philadelphia for 24 years. Favorite roles include George in Of Mice and Men (Walnut); Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet (Arden); and Feste in Twelfth Night (PSF). In 2005, Lawton wrote The Foocy, which garnered five Barrymore nominations (including Best New Play). Film: Silver Linings Playbook, Unbreakable, Invincible.

TV: Hack, Cold Case. He performs solo productions of The Devil and Billy Markham, The Great Divorce, and The Screwtape Letters.

ANNE LEWIS (Director, Blithe) is a member of the theatre faculty at DeSales University and served as director of the DeSales Summer Theatre Institute. Anne’s latest directorial endeavor at PSF was Cinderella. Some of her directorial work at DeSales University includes I Love a Piano and A View from the Bridge, which were both listed in The Morning Call’s top ten productions of the Lehigh Valley for 2012. Other productions that Anne directed are Once Upon a Mattress, Little Women, and Lost in Yonkers.

NATHAN MADDEN* (Riff, West Side) is a graduate of the Juilliard School, has danced with BJM DANSE, Twyla Tharp’s tour of “Come Fly Away,” made his Broadway debut with the cast of Chicago, and was an original cast member of An American in Paris. He has performed in regional theater productions and has assisted, taught, and choreographed internationally for both the screen and stage.

I’m thrilled to be a part of this season and so grateful to be continuing to grow from “Glory to Glory!” Romans 8:37-39.

LARRY LIPKIS (Music Director, On the Green) is professor of music at Moravian College, where he also directs the early music ensembles. Larry performs and records with the Baltimore Consort, an internationally acclaimed ensemble specializing in popular music of the Renaissance. Their program, “Food of Love: Songs for Shakespeare,” premiered at PSF in 2014, and has been heard by audiences nationwide. A prolific composer, Larry has written several concertos based on characters from the Commedia dell’Arte, and incidental music to Shakespeare’s plays.

TAIBI MAGAR (Director, Mermaid) is a New York-based director and a graduate of the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA program. Regional credits include The Hunchback of Seville, A Christmas Carol (Trinity Repertory Company), and The Comedy of Errors (Shakespeare & Company). She is the recipient of a Stephen Sondheim Fellowship, an Oregon Shakespeare Festival Fellowship, and a Public Theater Shakespeare Fellowship.

A member of the Amy Marshall Dance Company where he has had the privilege of performing all over the world. Recent graduate from Adelphi University with a BFA in dance. NICOLE L. MOYER (Associate Box Office Manager) is thrilled to be working as the associate box office manager for her sixth season! She loves working with all of the creative minds here at PSF. Cheers to another fantastic season.

PATRICK MULCAHY (Director, Caesar; Producing Artistic Director) Since assuming leadership in 2003, Mulcahy has led PSF’s return to artistic excellence and financial stability, built the professional company of artists, oversaw the quadrupling of the endowment, and achieved increasing national recognition for the Festival. Further accomplishments include PSF’s first-ever awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and attracting a company of artists including winners and nominees of the Tony, Obie, Emmy, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Jefferson, and Barrymore awards to the Festival, growth in all income areas, a 75% increase in annual attendance, and the expansion of the number of Actors’ Equity contracts per season.

As a professional director, actor and fight director, credits include Broadway, OffBroadway, regional theatre, television, and radio. Mulcahy has acted with Angela Bassett, Peter MacNicol, Hal Holbrook, Joan Cusack, Don Cheadle, Anne Meara, Milo O’Shea, Cynthia Nixon, Tony Shaloub, Bradley Whitford, and others at the New York Shakespeare Festival, Hartford Stage, Roundabout Theatre Company, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Syracuse Stage, and the Walnut Street Theatre. He served as a fight director for Tom Hulse and Timothy Busfield in A Few Good Men on Broadway and for OffBroadway productions starring John Savage, John Mahoney, Marcia Gay Harden, and Patrick Dempsey. He directed Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga in The Real Thing, and, for PSF, directed Macbeth (2014), Hamlet (2011), Antony and Cleopatra (2009), The Winter’s Tale (2007), Henry IV, Part I (2005), The Tempest (1999), and acted in and served as fight director for The Taming of the Shrew (1998) and Julius Caesar (1997). Also head of acting at DeSales, Patrick holds an MFA from Syracuse University.

MATT PFEIFFER (Director, Shrew/S4K) Matt is a Philly born actor and director who serves as the associate artistic director of Theatre Exile. Matt has directed and/or appeared in more than 30 productions in his 17 seasons at PSF. Some highlights include directing recent productions of Henry V, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and The 39 Steps. Recent directing credits include the world premieres of Funnyman (Arden Theatre) and To The Moon (1812 Productions). DENNIS RAZZE (Director, West Side Story; Associate Artistic Director, PSF) is the chairman of the theatre department of DeSales University, where he has been a faculty member for the last 31 years. He is also a founding member of PSF. Last summer, he directed PSF’s critically acclaimed production of Les Misérables. He has directed many of PSF’s productions including Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma!, Sweeney Todd, South Pacific, A Funny Thing…Forum, 1776, Cyrano de Bergerac, My Fair Lady, Amadeus, Man of La Mancha, The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and As You Like It. Mr. Razze also composed musical scores for PSF’s Cyrano, The Tempest, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He was awarded Certificates of Merit from the American College Theatre Festival for his direction of Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma!, and The Music Man, and he was the guest director for Lehigh University’s production of The Music Man at Zoellner Arts Center in 2003.

JEROME ROBBINS (West Side) is world renowned as a choreographer of ballets, as well as a director and choreographer in theater, movies, and television. Robbins’ (1918-1998) Broadway credits include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, and Fiddler on the Roof. His last Broadway production in 1989, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, won six Tony Awards including best musical and best director. Among the more than 60 ballets he created are Fancy Free, Afternoon of a Faun, and Dances at a Gathering, which are in the repertories of New York City Ballet and other major companies, as well as A Suite of Dances created for Mikhail Baryshnikov and West Side Story Suite. In addition to two Academy Awards for the film West Side Story, he received four Tony Awards, two Emmy Awards, and was a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient.

ZACK ROBIDAS* (Berowne, Love’s LL) has appeared as Henry in Henry V, David in The Foreigner, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Measure for Measure, The Importance of Being Ernest, Othello, The Winter’s Tale, The Taming of the Shrew, Henry IV part 1, and The Merchant of Venice with PSF. PETER SCHMITZ* (Holofernes, Love’s LL) last appeared at PSF as Archbishop Cranmer in Henry VIII. He was once a player at many a theater, including the Guthrie, Yale Rep, the Walnut Street Theater, Act II Playhouse, the Wilma, etc., etc. But he is now a mere schoolmaster and a pedant, teaching history of theater at the University of the Arts and Montgomery County Community College.

He also coaches other actors in accents and dialects. He could say more about himself, but to quote a wise man: “Vir sapit qui pauca loquitur.” And surely we can all agree with that.

FR. GERARD J. SCHUBERT, OSFS (Founder) is the founding chairperson of DeSales’ Theater and Speech Department in 1969 and founder and Artistic Director of Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival in 1991. Fr. Schubert (1929-2015) was instrumental in creating a vibrant Performing Arts arm of the liberal arts curriculum at DeSales University. With his guidance, the department developed majors in dance and TV/film and has grown to more

than 300 majors in theatre, TV/film, and dance. In PSF, he created a nationally recognized theater festival of high professional standards, attracting renowned artists from around the country. The Festival has grown to incorporate a season of seven plays and an audience base of 30,000 each summer. The Festival takes an annual tour of Shakespeare to middle and high schools throughout Pennsylvania. He has increased the exposure of Shakespeare and other classics throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (Playwright, Caesar/Love’s LL/Shrew) (1564-1616) Our knowledge of William Shakespeare’s life is pieced together with information from limited primary sources: his own works, various legal and church documents, and references to him, his plays, and his genius in thirdparty letters. Here’s what we do know: William Shakespeare was born in Stratfordupon-Avon on or about April 23, 1564.

Records from Holy Trinity Church tell us he was baptized there on April 26, 1564. His father was John Shakespeare, a glove-maker, and his mother was Mary Arden, a landowning heiress. William was the third of eight children, three of whom died in child-

hood. His father was fairly successful and was an alderman and a high-bailiff (mayor) of Stratford. It is assumed that he went to the free grammar school in Stratford, which was considered an excellent school. It seems certain that Shakespeare never went on to University.

The next documented event is Shakespeare’s marriage to Anne Hathaway on November 28, 1582. They had three children: a daughter, Susanna, and twins, Hamnet and Judith.

Hamnet died at age 11. We lose track of Shakespeare for the next seven years. There are rumors that he was fond of poaching and had to flee Stratford after an incident with one of the gentry there. He began to make a name for himself in London by 1592, possibly earlier, as both an actor and a playwright.

Unfortunately, the plague forced the closing of the theaters in 1592.

By 1594 the plague had abated, and Shakespeare was acting, writing, and performing the duties of a managing partner for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. This was a popular company, enjoyed by the commoners as well as royalty. It was around this time that Shakespeare and company made plans for the Globe Theater. The Globe was to be across the river from London, and was

built around 1599. In total, Shakespeare wrote 37 plays that have survived (or 38 or 39, depending on the point of view of the particular scholar) and numerous sonnets and poems.

April 23, 1616, is the day that marks Shakespeare’s death (the same as his birthday!) though we are uncertain of that date’s precision. We do know he was buried in Stratford, with services at the Holy Trinity Church on April 25, 1616. In his infamous will, he left his properties to his daughter Susanna, and to his wife his “second best bed.”

TINA SLAK (Group and Corporate Sales Manager) is a DeSales theatre graduate who was directed by Dennis Razze in 1992, ’93, and ’94 in Act 1’s West Side Story (Maria), Into the Woods (the Witch), and Anything Goes (Reno Sweeney). Tina was on the staff of PSF in the inaugural year and celebrates her return for a 4th season. Truly coming full circle, her daughters Alena and Gabriella have each performed on the Labuda stage; one cast by Dennis and the other directed by Patrick.

STEPHEN SONDHEIM (Lyricist, West Side) is a legendary composer and lyricist whose successes include an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards (more than any other composer), including a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, the Laurence Olivier Award and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom. His best known works as a composer and lyricist include Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods. He was once described by Frank Rich of The New York Times as “the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theatre.”

CHELSEA MARIAH SOTO (Teresita/ Somewhere Soloist/Maria u/s, West Side) is thrilled to be making her Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival debut in her favorite musical of all time, West Side Story.

Regional credits include: The King and I, West Side Story, A Christmas Carol, The Little Mermaid, RENT. Educational credits include: A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, Legally Blonde, Smile: The Musical, Music Man, Batboy: The Musical. Chelsea is a recent graduate of Arizona State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in musical theatre. Love to her family and Humberto for all their love and support.

SOUTH* (Bernardo/Dance Captain, West Side) is thrilled to be a part of the 2016 PSF family and play a role that has changed his life. Charles was able to lead the international touring production of West Side Story all over Europe and the West End. Bernardo is placed close to his heart and he is honored to revisit the role. Charles also just recently returned from Paris where he helped originate and performed in Alex Lacamoire’s Carmen la Cubana. NYC labs/workshops credits: Bull Durham, King Kong, Up Here. International tours: West Side Story, Carmen la Cubana.

EMMY SPAAR (Minnie, West Side) is a junior double major in dance and English at DeSales, excited to appear in her first production with PSF. She has previously performed in the Emerging Choreographers Concerts in 2014 and 2015 and the Dance Ensemble Concerts in 2015 and 2016, and she was most recently featured in excerpts from “Dark Elegies” by Antony Tudor. She would like to thank God, her family, and her friends.

KAREN SPANO (Business Manager) is very excited about her second year at PSF and thankful to be a part of the PSF staff. She is a graduate of West Chester University with a BS in Accounting/ Business Administration.

She resides in Bethlehem, Pa., with her wonderful husband Michael, and three very precious children Georgia, Antonia, and Niko. Something that is dear to her heart is promoting the importance of organ and tissue donation awareness. In the winter she is an avid skier and a PSIA ski instructor at Blue Mountain Resort in Palmerton, Pa. He is currently artistic director at CSC, an Equity theatre located on the campus of Centenary College in Hackettstown, N.J., where he is also professor of theatre arts and chairman of the Fine Arts Department. WAYNE S. TURNEY* (Boyet, Love’s LL) is a Professor with the theatre faculty at DeSales, where he directed the recent production of his own “transladaptation” of Sophokles’ Elektra. A regular with PSF, Turney came to do Argan in The Imaginary Invalid and stayed on to play myriad old men, most recently Exeter in Henry V. Turney has appeared with the Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Actors’ Summit, Cleveland Play House, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville and many others. He won an Emmy for his work on NBC Production’s Hickory Hideout and flew EC-135’s in the USAF. His wife is the Rev. Harper Turney.

JOE VINCENT* (Doc, West Side) has a career that includes a combined 36 years at the Oregon, California, Old Globe, Alabama, Utah, Pennsylvania and Orlando Shakespeare Festivals, in 62 productions of 33 of Shakespeare’s 37 plays. He has also performed more than 50 major musical theatre roles, including Tevye in 2014 here at PSF! In 2008, Vincent made his Broadway debut as Max in Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘n’ Roll directed by Trevor Nunn. In his spare time, Mr. Vincent leads tours to “Shakespeare’s Italy.”

CARL N. WALLNAU* (Gremio, Shrew; Dr. Bradman, Blithe) is pleased to return to PSF as part of its 25th anniversary season.

WILLIAM ZIELINSKI* (Lt. Shrank, West Side) is delighted to return to the Festival, following last season’s Henry V. Recent theatre credits include: They Don’t Pay, We Won’t Pay, Portland Stage Company; The Seafarer, Florida Repetory Theatre; Row After Row, People’s Light and Theatre; Down Past Passyunk, InterAct Theatre, and The Exonerated, Delaware Theatre Company.
