This special place within the Southern Indiana rolling hills is called “Limestone Country.” The rich limestone quarrying and carving history began in the early 1800s. Limestone from this area was used to build the Empire State Building, Pentagon and other notable buildings across the country.

Spring Mill State Park One of the most popular state parks in the Midwest Spring Mill State Park offers hilly hiking trails, a campground, playground, nature center and an outdoor swimming pool for families and adventurers.

Unlike any other state park, Spring Mill provides many unique adventures, too.

Here, you can take an underground boat ride at Twin Caves during the summer. Take a step back in time to the restored Pioneer Village, a recreation of an early 1800s settlement.

You’ll experience pioneer life with an interpretive cast of characters and a real working grist mill. Don’t miss the Grissom Memorial interactive exhibits that celebrate Hoosier astronaut Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, too!

When it’s time to end the day, don’t leave the park! Stay the night at Spring Mill Inn, a rustic yet modern inn located in the center of the park. For more info, see page 27 and inside back cover. The park is nestled among the scenic hills of Lawrence County just a few miles east of Mitchell, Indiana.

Bluespring Caverns Park The nation’s longest navigable underground waterway At a cool 52 degrees and 100 feet below the earth’s surface, visitors to Bluespring Caverns explore an underground river through limestone caverns. Cave guides navigate along the subterranean river for over a mile, pointing out native rare blind fish and crayfish in their natural setting. The caverns tour treats visitors to America’s most extensive subterranean boat trip for an unforgettable experience. Back up on the surface, visitors can prospect for gemstones, fossils and arrowheads, browse the unique gift shop or walk the nature trail around Indiana’s largest sinkhole.

Bluespring Caverns Park is open every day March 16 through October 31 and is located at 1459 Bluespring Caverns Road (1/2 mile off US Hwy. 50, 5 miles southwest of Bedford, Indiana.)

Williams Covered Bridge One of Indiana’s longest active covered bridges The newly renovated bridge retains the history of days gone by while welcoming today’s adventurers. The bridge is open to bicycles and pedestrians and spans the East Fork White River. Williams Covered Bridge is one of just a handful of covered bridges in southern Indiana.

Just west of the town of Williams off SR 450.

Hoosier National Forest Over 200,000 sq. miles of protected woodland to explore Trails, rolling hills, wildlife and much more can be found in a special area of land scattered through nine counties in Indiana, federally protected and maintained for visitors to enjoy. Tincher Lake, inside Hoosier National Forest, welcomes fishing.

Lawrence County Recreational Park, located in Springville, is a unique area for motorcycle and ATV riders.

It is also home to the ABATE of Indiana Boogie event held every July.

Mitchell City Parks offer swimming, picnic area, playground, horseshoes, basketball and community building.

Murray Forest Park, Thornton Park and Wilson Park are three Bedford City Parks that offer baseball/ softball, basketball, soccer, football, swimming, horseshoes, playgrounds and picnic shelters.

Otis Park in Bedford is equipped with an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, picnic areas, soccer fields, a shelter house and a historically significant limestone band shell.

Sugar Creek Sporting Clays and Hunting Preserve offers European Style pheasant hunt, upland hunting, wobble trap, skeet, trap, sporting clays and 5 stand.

Lawrence County is the Home of Indiana Limestone Lawrence County, Indiana is noted as the birthplace of “America’s Building Stone.” By 1920, 80% of limestone building in the United States used Indiana stone. The famous Empire State Building, the Pentagon and the new Yankee Stadium are some of the notable American structures built with Lawrence County limestone.

The Indiana Limestone Heritage Trail through Lawrence and Monroe counties allow travelers to view and “Experience Indiana Limestone!” Brochures with maps are available at the Lawrence County Visitor Center.

June is Limestone Month, full of activities and events of this celebration of the history, art and heritage of the limestone industry.

Land of Limestone Exhibit is housed in a 1926 Bedford limestone building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Oakland City University, 405 I Street, Bedford Campus. Free admission.

Self-guided driving tours and walking tours in Lawrence County highlight the local limestone carvings, architecture and monuments. Brochures with maps are available at the Lawrence County Visitor Center.

Annual Mitchell Persimmon Festival The last full week of September The fall festival celebrating Lawrence County’s locally-grown fruit has been held in Mitchell for over 65 years! The event kicks off with a candlelight tour of Spring Mill State Park’s Pioneer Village and concludes with a showcase parade. The week-long festival also includes midway rides, live entertainment, food booths and a queen contest. Over 125,000 visitors attend the Persimmon Festival each year.

The persimmon is a plum-sized fruit that has an orange color with a unique flavor similar to pumpkin. This unique little fruit grows abundantly in the city of Mitchell in Lawrence County.

One of the most popular features of the Persimmon Festival is the annual persimmon pudding contest. Persimmon pudding is a baked dessert that tastes similar to pumpkin pie filling.

While visiting Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell, stop by the Millstone Dining Room in Spring Mill Inn to try the persimmon pudding that is served at the restaurant. It’s delicious but hard to describe! You can bake persimmon pudding at home, too. Purchase the key ingredient (persimmon pulp) from Applacres, an orchard and general store in Bedford, just north of Mitchell.

Astronauts from Lawrence County Three distinguished men from Lawrence County have played a major role in the exploration of space for the United States.

Kenneth D. Bowersox graduated from Bedford High School and his first flight was aboard Space Shuttle Columbia.

Charles D. Walker was born in Bedford and was a crew member on several Space Shuttle missions.

Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom was born in Mitchell and was one of the original seven Mercury astronauts in 1959. He died with two other astronauts in a fire during a launch pad test on January 27, 1967.

Grissom Memorial at Spring Mill State Park The Virgil I. Grissom Memorial is a tribute to the Mitchell-born astronaut who was a pioneer in America’s exploration of outer space. This newly restored interactive museum features Grissom’s actual space suit, one of the capsules he piloted and actual artifacts of his life and career. Open daily 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Grissom Monument A 44-foot, 28-ton limestone statue of the Titan II Rocket with Grissom’s Gemini III “Unsinkable Molly Brown” capsule stands on the lawn of Mitchell’s City Hall. Handcarved in the limestone base is the history of Gus Grissom’s military and NASA careers. The monument is located at 409 S. 6th St., Mitchell.
