A LOOK INSIDE OUR OPERATING THEATRES

r Peter Evans, our new Clinical Director of Surgery, shares what it’s really like inside our operating theatres, where lives are saved and changed every day.

Last year our surgeons performed 19,474 surgeries.

“Having someone’s life in your hands is about the biggest responsibility you can have,” says Peter, who specialises in liver, pancreatic and biliary surgery.

The life of a surgeon There are many things Peter enjoys about his job.

“I love being a surgeon. In theatre you get to use your hands as well as your brain.”

“A lot of surgery is problem solving and most surgeons thrive on that challenge. The reward for success is being able to make a difference in someone’s life.”

“Outside of the operating room, I get to talk to patients and their relatives, find out a bit about them, and reassure them about what they’re about to go through.”

In the operating room

The experienced surgeon develops a special relationship with long-term patients.

Every theatre is staffed by a team of professionals, who work closely together to care for the patient.

“I prefer to be called Peter – not Mr Evans or Dr Evans,” explains Peter.

“It is important that all members of the team are on a first name basis, as it improves the operating room culture and produces a safer environment.”

Some of the operations Peter performs can take four or five hours.

“I often have music playing in the operating room, but for the most part, I tune it out – it’s mostly playing for the rest of the team,” explains Peter.

“I am very task oriented, so I’m concentrating on the surgery, not tapping along and listening to the music!”

“I routinely follow my patients who have had a cancer removed. I like to follow them for five years after the surgery. It’s only then that we can say we think they’re cured.”

“It’s quite an emotional time when you say good-bye after five years.”

Peter is not the only health professional in the family – his wife is an anaesthetist whom he met in medical school, and two of his three sons are also pursuing careers in health.

World-class healthcare on your doorstep There are ten operating theatres at Frankston Hospital and one at Rosebud Hospital, with plans for an additional two theatres as part of the proposed re-development of Frankston to meet the increasing demand.

Peter started in his new role at Frankston Hospital in July and is excited about the growth in surgery which lies ahead.

“There is a foreseeable increase in work in Endoscopy and Colonoscopies as a result of increased population screening,” explains Peter.

“We are expanding our Ear Nose and Throat service with two new surgeons coming and there’s the Liver and Pancreatic surgery that I’m doing.”

“A lot of operations have historically been centralised to just a few city hospitals, but Peninsula Health has developed to a point where the expertise to do many of these surgeries is available right here at Frankston Hospital.”

he Frankston Hospital Pink Ladies Auxiliary is famous for its bright uniforms, friendly volunteers, record fundraising achievements, and their delicious sandwiches.

Peninsula Health’s longest running volunteer group is celebrating 50 years of service to the Frankston Hospital community this year, after starting in 1968.

“We have raised almost $9 million since we started, which is used to buy equipment for the hospital,” explains Pink Ladies President, Pauline Ellerby, who joined the group in 1992.

“One of the first things we ever bought was three reclining chairs for the Chemotherapy Day Unit and that was a big thing for us because they were about $3,000 each.”

“Now we’ve helped buy all sorts of high-tech equipment, some of which has cost around $1 million.”

Brendon Gardner, Chief Operating Officer of Frankston Hospital, says the 68 current members, as well as all of the past volunteers, have been a big part of the hospital over the last half a century.

“Congratulations to the Pinkies on 50 years of outstanding service.”

“Frankston Hospital would not be the hospital it is today if it wasn’t for their support helping us purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment which our team use to save lives, every day.”

Anyone who has visited Frankston Hospital will no doubt have encountered the Pink Ladies delivering flowers and newspapers, or at their kiosk, where they sell food, coffee and an array of gifts.

“Our sandwiches are certainly famous,” recalls Pauline. “When Health Minister Jill Hennessey came to visit recently she said ‘I always remember the Pinkies’ Egg and Lettuce sandwich’!”

“When we started the kiosk the kitchen used to make the sandwiches for us and we’d sell about 16.”

“Now we make it all ourselves and we sell more than 200 sandwiches and 50 rolls every day!”

Originally started by Edna Vincent, the wife of one of the hospital’s first doctors, the group has met Premiers, Health Ministers, and Governors and won two awards – the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Award, and the 2010 Minister for Health Award.

“I always remember the Pinkies’ Egg & Lettuce sandwich!”

Their original uniform of a pink floral dress, stockings, white shoes and a pink cape has been replaced with a more modern outfit, but their role in the hospital supporting staff, patients and visitors, remains the same.

“People come in crying and you know they’ve either lost a loved one or someone has been very ill and we ask them if they’d like a cup of tea or want to talk,” says Pauline.

“It can be a very sad place but it can also be a very happy place and we have a lot of laughs with people.”

Pauline is retiring from the Pink Ladies this year, after 16 years as president.

“I’m 80 at my next birthday and I feel it’s time to go out on my own accord but I will miss it.”

As for what’s next for the Pinkies?

“I don’t know if I can see a man going around in a pink shirt and white pants,” laughs Pauline.

“But I know the ladies will keep making sandwiches and running the kiosk to continue raising funds to purchase important medical equipment the hospital needs.”

Half a century of the Pink Ladies 1968 • Pink Ladies Auxiliary is officially formed by Edna Vincent, the wife of one of Frankston Hospital’s first doctors.

1982 • After starting with 15 members, this number has now grown, with more than 200 ladies joining the group.

2002 • Pauline Ellerby becomes the group’s third President.

2011 • The Pink Ladies Auxiliary donate more than $1 million towards the new Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) machine.

2018 • The Pinkies reach their Golden Jubilee milestone – 50 years of service – and over $9 million in donations for Frankston Hospital.

n the six years since Dr Kathy McMahon took over as Clinical Director of Paediatrics at Peninsula Health, there has been seismic change.

“We had only one Outpatient clinic when I started in 2012, we now have about 28 different clinics as well as our Outreach service, where we are in some of the vulnerable schools seeing children who previously did not see paediatricians.”

In addition to the growth in outpatient programs, Kathy’s attention is also on innovation in the acute hospital area.

“We have a vibrant educational program now, which I believe has been instrumental in Paediatric trainees coming to work here,” enthuses Kathy. “We have outstanding trainees and each year the applicants far outweigh the positions, leading to better care for our local children. We have become one of the prized rotations from The Royal Children’s Hospital,” “Previously people had to go to hospitals like Monash or the (Royal) Children’s and couldn’t get in easily and they wouldn’t be seen by local people. Local people have local knowledge and it’s now best practice to be seen locally, so that’s what we are providing for our community.”

Around the world and back again After decades of travelling and accumulating invaluable experience, Kathy’s life has gone near full circle.

“I grew up in Seaford, and went to school in this area.

We travelled around the state a lot as my father was a teacher, but I did all my secondary education here, and then I left and didn’t think I’d come back again!”

As successful as Kathy has been in paediatrics, it was a career that nearly didn’t happen.

“My first year as an Intern was at Prince Henry’s Hospital in St Kilda Road, and I loved it. I applied for a second year but didn’t get it. I was devastated.”

“Years later I met the guy who was head of the area at Prince Henry’s, and he said ‘I think we made the wrong choice!’”

DR KATHY MCMAHON is the Clinical Director of Paediatrics at Peninsula Health.

She is also the Chairperson of the Director of the Paediatrics group for the State of Victoria, and on the Paediatric Clinical Network insight group for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Bigger and better With six years under her belt, Kathy is focussed on continuing to grow and advance children’s care at Peninsula Health.

“We would like to expand our paediatric unit and Special Care Nursery to cater for slightly smaller babies, more premature babies, so that we can treat more people locally,” explains Kathy.

“I would also like to expand our Outpatients clinics with more sub-speciality clinics and expand our developmental behavioural clinics which are booked out for at least six months.”

Outside the hospital Away from Peninsula Health, Kathy is an active member of her local community. She is a wife, and mother to her three sons.

“My husband and I met through athletics, running in Wales at an athletics camp, so we go bike riding, swimming, surfing, love going down to Lorne, and love the (Western) Bulldogs, as my father grew up in Footscray and my British husband immediately became a fan.”

Even after raising three boys, Kathy has no doubt she made the right career choice to become a paediatrician surrounded by children every day.

“Paediatrics is the best speciality to be in. I have always loved children, and I have never disliked one child ever – I’ve disliked a few parents along the way – but never a child!”

ayne Kitchin has been the maintenance man behind the scenes at Rosebud Hospital for nearly three decades.

“I’m in my 29th year, starting on 7 May 1990.”

As Maintenance Supervisor, very little happens at Rosebud without Wayne’s knowledge, supervision and guidance.

“I started out as a cleaner, part-time, and I was running a motel at the time, and then the recession hit,” says Wayne. “Because the gardener had retired they were talking about outsourcing the mowing job, and so I said ‘I’ll do it’, so I started doing that as well!”

“When the maintenance guy came up for retirement, I said ‘well I’ll step in there and have that job too’, so I have been officially with Facilities Management since about 1993.”

Things changed quickly after Wayne took on the full-time maintenance role, as Rosebud Hospital quickly grew.

“We doubled the size of the hospital in 1994 – we went from 36 beds to around 70 beds. The whole side extension has been the biggest thing in my time, and the mother-baby unit, the gym and the ensuites more recently.”

More urgent responsibility came when the effects of the Longford gas disaster hit Rosebud Hospital hard in 1998.

“When Victoria was out of gas for those two weeks, all our hot water systems are all on natural gas,” explains Wayne. “So I made some quick enquiries, and because it was an emergency, I got big, bulk LPG cylinders and plumbers rigging up gas lines, up to the roof.”

“The community has always been a big supporter of Rosebud Hospital, making sure we have everything we need, so I was really happy to help out when that disaster struck.”

Personal and professional life combine daily for Wayne, who met his wife Di at Rosebud Hospital, where the pair still work and are well-known to many.

“Pretty much everything that gets done at Rosebud goes through Di or me,” smiles Wayne.

“The only drawback is when we get home at night, all we can talk about is work!”

“The community has always been a big supporter of Rosebud Hospital” Powering Rosebud Hospital through Green Energy Peninsula Health has started a pilot program at Rosebud Hospital, using a $70,000 grant from the State Government to install newgeneration solar panels and a battery storage system.

• Power from the panels is stored in a Tesla battery.

• Stored power is used when peak rates are applicable.

• Panels are both an energy-saving and money-saving investment for Rosebud Hospital.

• Rosebud Community Health building is ideal for the solar installation pilot.

• Engineer-designed system minimises peak demand and electricity charges.

• Site maximises viable roof space for solar panels.

Outside, in the car park, on the wards or in theatre, there is never a dull moment for Wayne.

“It’s always different, there’s always something, it’s move this or fix that!”

“I’m the go-to man here. When someone doesn’t know something, someone will usually say ‘ask Wayne’!”

STOPPING HAIR LOSS IN CANCER PATIENTS

L

osing your hair is a confronting and common side effect of cancer treatment, but thanks to an innovative new treatment at Peninsula Health, that could become a distant memory for many in the community.

Frankston Hospital is one of the first public health services in the state to offer patients scalp cooling, which chills the head and works by reducing the amount of chemotherapy drugs that reach the hair follicles.

Crib Point mother-of-three, Angela Fox, is the first patient to have the new treatment at Frankston Hospital.

“It’s marvellous to have this technology in a public hospital,” says Angela. “It basically helps you keep your dignity while you’re having this treatment done.”

“It feels very strange and definitely cold” “Hair is important – if you’ve still got your hair a lot of people don’t realise what you’re going through and that’s a good thing.”

Thank you The local community came together this winter to Take a Break for Cancer and raised over $25,000!

Thank you for raising funds for local cancer services at Frankston and Rosebud Hospitals and making sure everyone has access to fast diagnosis, fast treatment and the care and support they need, close to home.

Chemotherapy Day Unit Nurse Manager, Joan Thomas, says the scalp cooling started in June and is already making a significant difference.

“Losing your hair can be quite traumatic. Stopping this from happening can help the mental health and wellbeing of patients as it helps them continue to look and feel like their usual self.”

“It is fantastic we can now offer this service to patients thanks to the generous support from Perpetual Trustees on behalf of the three funds and the local community,” says Joan.

Angela was diagnosed with breast cancer after having a routine mammogram.

“The tumour was very small – they told me they were lucky to find it actually,” explains Angela.

“Within four weeks, I was having surgery at Frankston Hospital to remove the tumour and some lymph nodes from my arm.”

The next part of Angela’s treatment was chemotherapy. The long-time Peninsula resident and grandmother of two wears the cooling cap each time she attends the Chemotherapy Day Unit for treatment.

“It feels very strange and definitely cold – it’s like when you jump in the water and there are all these bubbles.”

“It saves me losing my hair though, so I don’t mind what it feels like!”

Community and philanthropic support making a difference • T he scalp cooling machines were funded thanks to a grant from Perpetual Trustees on behalf of RP Medical Fund, Rowe Family Foundation and The John Robertson Grigor and Mrs Eve McKenzie Bequest.

• T he local community also played a role, with funds raised from Peninsula Health’s Take a Break For Cancer campaign being used to fit out the area and install new monitors for the scalp cooling.

“I knew something was wrong but I couldn’t even walk into the club house, I didn’t know where it was” I

magine your head starts to go cloudy. You can’t think straight and are completely disoriented, and then to make matters worse you begin to lose your vision.

This is exactly what happened to 64-year-old Ian Thompson – and while he did not know it at the time, he was having a stroke.

“After meeting other stroke survivors I feel lucky, as if I had dodged a bullet,” says the Mornington father-of-three.

“Thankfully, the staff at Frankston Hospital Emergency Department recognised the signs and responded so quickly.”

A member of Frankston Archery Club, Ian was at the club when the stroke hit.

“I was using this new solvent to repair the arrows and it’s really volatile stuff,” explains Ian. “It was after I’d had a whiff of that my head started to go all funny, so I put it down to that. I knew something was wrong but I couldn’t even walk into the club house – I didn’t know where it was. I didn’t know how to use my phone to call my wife. All I could do was sit there.”

It was 4.30pm and the clock had started ticking to save Ian’s life and limit the effects of the stroke.

“A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is interrupted,” explains Dr Shyaman Menon, Frankston Hospital’s Emergency Department Clinical Director.

“Blood is carried to the brain by arteries, which contains the oxygen and nutrients your brain cells need. Without this, brain cells die.”

“While brain cells usually die shortly after the stroke starts, some can last a few hours if the blood supply is not cut off completely. This is why it is so important people get to the Emergency Department as soon as possible so medication can be administered to save these cells.”

Ian’s archery club mates could see something was badly wrong, so they took Ian home to his wife Sandy.

Sandy took one look at him and brought him straight to the Emergency Department.

By the time he arrived the Emergency Department staff had just 45 minutes to diagnose the stroke, determine what had caused it, and administer the lifesaving clot-busting medication.

“They found I had two blockages – one on the right side, which was the part that affects eyesight, and one at the top of the spinal cord,” explains Ian. “They were working really hard with the four hour window to give me the clot buster. I ended up getting it with 20 minutes to go – so I was lucky.”

After a few nights in hospital, Ian was able to go home, and is now in the Stroke Detours program.

“My sight is still recovering so they taught me really practical things for coping with that, how to get my bearings back – for example they’d drive me down to the local shops and then I had to direct them home.”

Though still recovering from the effects of the stroke, Ian is back firing arrows, caravanning and spending time with his grandchildren.

WORLD-CLASS CARE FOR PENINSULA WOMEN

eninsula Health is leading the way in women’s health, opening a new clinic where a common gynaecology procedure is now performed in an outpatient setting, rather than in the operating theatre.

The Hysteroscopy Clinic uses the very latest technology to look inside the patient’s uterus to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the uterus.

Women are back at home a few hours later, avoiding a stay in hospital.

“This service is about putting the patient at the centre of the care we provide. We fit into the patient’s daily schedule rather than the other way around,” explains Dr Jolyon Ford, Clinical Director of Women’s Health.

“Recovery time is quicker, there is less risk with no general anaesthetic, and women are able to get back into their regular routine sooner.”

Frankston resident Marta was the first patient to access the clinic, which opened in June.

She was referred to Frankston Hospital after experiencing pain in her pelvis.

Marta, who is also a volunteer at Peninsula Health, went home shortly afterwards and was back to her normal routine the next day.

“It would have been scarier if I had to have a general anaesthetic, but this was fantastic” says Marta.

“While there was a little discomfort, it was really quick. Everything was done really professionally and with humour which is nice as it’s not the nicest thing to have done.”

A week later Marta received some good news – the biopsy found there were no abnormalities.

Dr Ford says women of all ages will benefit from the new clinic.

“The Hysteroscopy Clinic enables us to treat and diagnose different issues women may experience such as abnormal bleeding, fibroids or polyps.”

“Our Women’s Health team is dedicated to providing women with world-class care, close to home, and this innovation is the latest example of how we are striving to do just that.”

“My doctor sent me to have an ultrasound and it showed there may be something there, but it wasn’t clear,” explains Marta.

“I have a cancer history in my family so my doctor was concerned about what was happening.”

Marta needed to have a hysteroscopy so the doctor could take a biopsy and further investigate what was going on.

Until recently, this would have meant a trip to theatre and a longer recovery time. But luckily for Marta she was able to have the procedure in the new outpatient clinic.

What is a hysteroscopy?

A procedure where the inside of the uterus is examined through a thin telescope inserted through the cervix without the need for surgery.

Studies have shown that outpatient procedures with no general anaesthetic are highly acceptable to women as the discomfort is minimal with a rapid return to normal activities.
