Hospice, Colne Road, Burnley, Lancashire
In this edition, we share updates about our upcoming events, the range of services we offer at Pendleside Hospice, and how your fundraising efforts significantly impact the care we provide to our patients, and their families and carers
We are delighted to introduce Maria, who shares why she’s supporting our upcoming Light Up a Life campaign
While Light Up a Life is meaningful to our community, it is particularly important to our clinical team. This event allows us to pause and reflect; an opportunity we often miss in our commitment to ensuring the best possible care
The service underscores the importance of our work and our dedication to providing support through our Inpatient Unit, Hospice at Home provision, Health, Wellbeing & Rehabilitation programs, Outpatient services, and Family & Bereavement Support
However, none of this would be possible without your generosity. We hope you will join us for this year's Light Up a Life service
At Pendleside, we support everyone living with advancing long term, life limiting illnesses, along with their families and caregivers. Many believe they need a healthcare referral to access our services, but this is not the case. If you or someone you know needs support, please don t hesitate to get in touch on 01282 440 100 Thank you for your unwavering support, which makes caring for people at Pendleside Hospice possible
We are honoured to have Maria Burnett leading our upcoming Light Up a Life service This event holds special significance for Maria as she reflects on the life of her husband, Peter Burnett, and the support they both received during his final months
Maria and Peter s journey began in 1993 when they met at The Prince of Wales pub in Nelson. In 1999, following Peter s brain haemorrhage and stroke, they moved in together, with Maria becoming his primary caregiver, later getting married in 2004
In March 2023, the couple experienced what Maria called, “10 golden days”. Peter wanted to go out for meals and socialise with friends, but by June, his health declined again, and he was placed back on a feeding tube
“I organised a rota for Peter’s appointments and daily treatments, and attended every session with the consultant” added Maria.
“Once Peter was at Pendleside, I would often visit him during my free lessons. His illness is something we went through together and I fought for him as much as I could.”
“I received bereavement support from Pendleside’s Family Support team, which enabled me to speak out about my feelings Peter was my world, but the support I received gave me the strength to be on my own.”
“In March this year, I shared my story at the Iftar event, a collaborative evening between Marsden Heights and Pendleside. It was a good opportunity to raise awareness amongst the students, while helping them understand why I hadn’t always been there over the last few months ”
Peter s professional life began early, with an apprenticeship at Smith & Nephew at the age of 15. He dedicated 20 years to the company
“Although Peter was initially hesitant about being referred for hospice care, the palliative care team helped him to consider this option and we started receiving Hospice at Home support. Pendleside’s Nurse, Kate, was amazing and gave Peter the assurances he needed. However, by mid-August, managing his pain at home became increasingly difficult which led to his admission to the inpatient unit at Pendleside
“I am so proud of Peter for the man he was He would be deeply touched to know that even in his passing, he is helping to support the Hospice that meant so much to him. By sharing my story, I’m able to honour him and keep his memory alive”
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this October, we are honoured to share the incredible story of seven strong women, who met at different stages of their breast cancer journey. They first came together at one of our Health, Wellbeing & Rehabilitation programs ten years ago and have remained close ever since
Gemma Seed, along with her friends Linda Curtis, Janet Halstead, Joan Lakeland, Jean Austin, Patricia Watson, and Janet Smith, attended one-day-a-week sessions at the Hospice in 2014. The group offered a variety of activities including yoga, relaxation techniques and counselling
Gemma added, “I found out about Pendleside’s services through my friend, Alison, who had just founded Ribble Valley Breast Friends, only weeks before my own diagnosis. From the moment I found out about my cancer and throughout my treatment, both Pendleside Hospice and the Ribble Valley group provided me with an immense amount of support”
The weekly sessions were a great way of connecting with people who were going through something very similar. They understood how you felt and it helped knowing
that I wasn t alone. Switching off from the outside world and getting away from the continuous appointments and hospital treatments was a blessing, and it's where I met some life-long friends ”
“My friends and I have been meeting up every month for lunch, for the past 10 years, calling ourselves the ‘Hospice Ladies ! At the start of summer, we celebrated our 10-year ‘friendiversary’ with Linda baking a fabulous boob cake’ to mark the special occasion
Gemma was diagnosed at 28 with aggressive Grade 3 breast cancer and faced a year of rigorous treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone treatment. The sudden change in her life was challenging, but it led to profound personal growth and the chance to advocate for others diagnosed with breast cancer, at a young age Her breast cancer journey also brought about a change in her career
“During my chemotherapy, I had some sort of epiphany!” shares Gemma. “Having no idea where to even begin, I decided there and then that I wanted to become a burlesque performer! After undertaking some research, I began a burlesque course the following year. I am now a professional burlesque performer and teacher, and I have headlined international burlesque festivals and won multiple awards I’m a great believer that everything happens for a reason and that theres always a silver lining
“My advice to anyone who finds a lump or anything that is unusual on their own body, is to book an appointment with the GP, as soon as possible. Early detection is key to treating cancer,” advises Gemma

on Wheels
The meals are delicious ” Gordon says with a smile. “Every other day, I have them delivered, and they’re always very good. I especially enjoy the vegetarian options. I’d recommend them to anyone”
Gordon s journey with Pendleside began in 2023, alongside his wife, Helen. They joined the Living With Dementia group, and Helen was also facing the challenges of cancer
But our impact on Gordon extends far beyond the meals. He regularly attends the Peer Support Group, designed for those dealing with memory issues, and gets involved in the Dementia Music Café, where he finds joy in playing the drums and sharing moments with familiar faces. “It’s wonderful to be part of the music café” he notes. “The staff at Pendleside are encouraging, and it’s a great atmosphere where everyone feels welcome
Sadly, Helen passed away in April of the same year
“Since Helen s passing, Pendleside has been a place of comfort and connection for me” Gordon reflects. “I’m surrounded by good company, and there’s always a positive atmosphere”
At Pendleside, each person we care for has their own unique story, and we support many individuals through a variety of services and in numerous ways

Daisy Group, a leading Nelson-based technology company, continues its longstanding support for the Hospice by becoming the headline sponsor for this year's Pendleside Does Strictly event
This marks another chapter in Daisy Group’s partnership with Pendleside and we are extremely grateful for their generosity
Over the years, the company has been a consistent and generous supporter of the Hospice, playing a key role in various fundraising initiatives
In addition to this year ’ s sponsorship, in 2022, Daisy Group served as the headline sponsor for Pendleside’s Witch Festival, helping to raise critical funds
A few years earlier, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company donated £10 000 to
assist Pendleside in adapting its services during an incredibly challenging time
This contribution enabled us to create additional bedrooms for palliative care, easing the burden on local hospitals and ensuring patients received the care they needed
Dave McGinn, Managing Director of Daisy, expressed the company ’ s enthusiasm for supporting Pendleside Hospice once again
“Pendleside Hospice is close to our Lomeshaye-based head office, and while I m not originally from the area, I know many of our staff and their families have been supported by this i dibl l

We’re delighted to welcome Jane Daunt as the newest member of our Board of Trustees, bringing with her a wealth of retail experience to enhance the charity s retail operations
Having recently retired, after 18 years as Store Director at Boundary Outlet in Colne, Jane developed a strong relationship with the Hospice through the department store's frequent selection of Pendleside as their Charity of the Year
Working alongside Chief Executive, Helen McVey, and Head of Income Generation Louisa Mayor, Jane is already setting the wheels in motion for a comprehensive retail strategy
“For many people in Burnley and Pendle, our shops are their first point of contact with the Hospice” Jane notes. “It s crucial that these shops not only raise funds but also promote and reflect the very best of Pendleside
Jane has lived in the area for over 30 years and holds a strong connection to the local community. Her experience of her father s care by Lanarkshire Cancer Care in Scotland has given her a profound appreciation for the role hospices play in supporting families during difficult times. “I know from personal experience how vital hospices are,” Jane says “That’s why I’m so passionate about making sure that Pendleside’s shops succeed they’re a crucial part of how we fund the amazing work Pendleside does ”
Were excited to share our brand refresh with you all! It's fresh and modern but still holds onto the core values and spirit that our community loves With exciting projects on the horizon including a retail shop makeover, it was the perfect time for us to review and update Pendleside’s branding to ensure consistency across all areas
Many elements of our previous logo have stayed the same. The familiar flower emblem was kept to represent the uniqueness of Pendleside’s patients, service users, and their families and carers, with the heart symbol still central to the brand, embodying the Hospice’s care
The values of Care, Compassion and Support are now more prominent highlighted by a refreshed colour palette that is strong and vibrant. The introduction of a bold, core purple colour revitalises the Hospice’s image, giving it a fresh and energised appearance
At Pendleside, we ’ re proud to share the story of Chris Rawlinson, 81, who recently joined us as a volunteer patient transport driver
Chris has always been deeply committed to his community and dedicated to hard work. Born and raised in Higham, he and his wife Anne spent 11 years living in Cornwall, where Chris worked in the newspaper industry. In 1989, they returned to Higham to take over the village Post Office, which they ran successfully for nearly 17 years. Married for 57 years, Chris and Anne raised two children and built a life firmly rooted in their close-knit community In 2017, Anne was diagnosed with throat and mouth cancer. After a major operation and three weeks in the hospital, she was given the all-clear after five years. Unfortunately, just six months after reaching that milestone, Anne’s cancer returned. Her condition gradually worsened, making it increasingly difficult for her to eat, and she lived off soup in her final months. “Anne’s last proper meal was
As Annes health declined, Chris began to struggle with caring for her on his own. That s when they turned to Pendlesides Hospice at Home team for support. “Anne was frail and weak, and I was afraid of lifting her. The nurses were always there when we needed them,” Chris said. “Their help became essential as Annes condition continued to deteriorate
In June, Anne was admitted to Pendlesides inpatient unit, giving Chris a brief respite. Sadly she passed away on the 6th July, 2024. Her wake at The Four Alls Inn, was a fitting tribute with £1,524 raised in her memory. Chris also marked his 80th birthday at the same place, raising an additional £370 for Pendleside Chris and Anne had also been playing Pendleside Lottery for a number of years winning the £1 000 jackpot a year ago, but it s the support they received that Chris remembers most. “I m grateful for everything Pendleside did for us,” Chris says. “Now, as a volunteer driver, I want to give something back
David Brown, Chairman of Pendleside Hospice, added, "Through this brand refresh, we're ensuring Pendleside remains deeply rooted in our community while evolving with the times to meet the needs of those we care for. It's about honouring our past while embracing a future that enhances accessibility and strengthens our connections. As we continue to expand our services and reach, this brand refresh will help us better connect with those who need us and those who support us ”
