Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic Raises Over $21,000 to Benefit Breast Cancer Support Services in the Midcoast

The Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic was hosted by the Rockland Women’s Golf Association on August 12 at Rockland Golf Club. 25 foursomes played in the scramble tournament and over 150 local businesses sponsored and/or donated to the event which raises funds to benefit breast cancer support services in the Midcoast through Pen Bay Medical Center. The 2016 event raised over $21,000 through team registrations, sponsorships, a dine around raffle, basket raffle and more. Pen Bay Medical Center and the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation would like to thank the Rockland Women’s Golf Association and all who took part in the tournament. Colleague News MaineHealth Selects New CMO Joan D. Boomsma, MD currently the chief medical officer with Atlantic Medical Group of Morristown, N.J. will join MaineHealth in September. She will replace Dr. Bob McArtor, who came out of retirement to step back into the CMO role on an interim basis. Dr. Boomsma is expected to be a key member of the MaineHealth team. She will help lead efforts in service line development, clinical integration, population health, safety and quality, payment reform and price transparency as well as employee engagement, especially among our physicians. She will work closely with the CMOs at all MaineHealth member organizations. For more than a decade, she has held physician leadership roles at Chicago-area healthcare organizations. In 2011, she became chief medical officer of the Access Community Health Network in Chicago, serving more than 200,000 patients and overseeing the work of more than 250 providers. In 2013 she joined Atlantic Health System, one of the largest hospital systems in New Jersey, first as chief medical officer at one of the system’s hospitals and later as the chief medical officer of the system’s medical group of more than 600 physicians. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Boomsma to MaineHealth and Pen Bay Medical Center.

PBMC Updates Community Health & Wellness Department Announces Fall 2016 Journey to Health Class Schedule The Community Health & Wellness team at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital is excited to announce their fall class schedule. Programs offered this fall include a scrumptious soups cooking class, martial arts for kids, yoga nidra, dance classes and more. PBMC Updates PBMC Spotlight: Clinical Research Department The Clinical Research Department at Pen Bay Medical Center has been working in conjunction with Duke University on an observational study with patients recently diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation (also called AFib or AF) is an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Of the 17 clinical sites in the United States participating in the study, Pen Bay Medical Center is proud to announce that we have been the highest enroller every week since the study began in May. 8 out of the 24 study participants nationwide have been enrolled through PBMC. Robert Stein, MD is the lead doctor involved in the study and looks forward to continuing the research and data collection around atrial fibrillation. The department also recently launched a Lyme disease study in July and will be launching a diabetes/chronic kidney disease study this fall. The Lyme disease study currently taking place involves trials of a new test for Lyme disease. The Clinical Research Department is enrolling patients that meet the study criteria and will conclude the study in the fall when tick season ends. A new research study with Mark Vannorsdall, MD of Pen Bay Nephrology will begin this fall. Patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease qualify for the six month study. The study may reduce blood sugars in some patients with diabetes. There is no charge to participate and a glucometer and other supplies will be provided. New Electronic Health Record to Launch at Pen Bay Medical Center in January 2017 On January 28, Pen Bay Medical Center will launch a new electronic health record called SeHR – Shared Electronic Health Record. With SeHR, health information will be available to all of your healthcare providers not only at PBMC, but throughout MaineHealth. This means fewer forms to fill out, no repeated tests or procedures, and access to all of your up-to-date health information in a secure online portal. No matter where you go, your care team will have the information they need to ensure you continue to receive the highest quality of care.

Maine Medical Center/ Tufts University School of Medicine Student’s Book Featured at Shriners Hospitals for Children Maine Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine Student Michael Stanley, on rotation for nine months at PBMC, currently has a book featured on the Shriners Hospital for Children website. As a Shriner and medical student, Michael wrote the book for patients at Shriners Hospital to have a story to relate to and connect with. Pen Bay Medical Center Family FUN Field Day and Wellness Trail Grand Opening Join the Community Health & Wellness staff from Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital for a day of free family FUN at PBMC on Saturday, September 17. The day will begin with a healthy breakfast, grand opening and donor recognition of our new wellness trail, followed by our first ever Family FUN Field Day. Bring your family and friends to toss water balloons, compete in a three-legged race, get creative with a community art project and whip up kid-friendly healthy snacks.

Around Our Community PBMC walks in Maine Lobster Festival Big Parade

Pen Bay Medical Center walked in the Big Parade at the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland on August 6. Colleagues and their families handed out apples and lobster shaped ice packs to the crowd on Main Street.
