40 Years of Giving
M
eet Charlotte Root. At 91 years young, Charlotte is Pen Bay Medical Center’s longest-serving volunteer. Charlotte started volunteering at the hospital gift shop in 1979, and has volunteered every week for the past 40 years. Charlotte and her husband, John, a retired PBMC surgeon, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year. As a mother of five, grandmother of eight, and greatgrandmother of 14, Charlotte knows how important good healthcare is to families. “Volunteering gives me a purpose in life. I look forward to being at the gift shop every week and supporting Pen Bay Medical Center. I enjoy seeing all the personnel at the hospital, the patients and guests and general public who come into the gift shop every day.”

With charitable donations from generous individuals, businesses, and foundations, the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation provides critical funding to keep quality care close to home. Serving 80,000 people in the Midcoast region of Knox and Waldo counties, the Foundation helps fund institutional priorities at Waldo County General Hospital, Pen Bay Medical Center, Quarry Hill, Waldo County Dental Care, Knox Center, Belfast Public Health Nursing Association, and the Sussman House. All donations to the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of federal and state law.

The Wellspring Society is composed of many community members who recognize the critical role that good healthcare plays in the wellbeing of our region. Elizabeth (Betsy) Harder has been a Wellspring member since 2004. “I am grateful for the excellent care my husband and I have received at Pen Bay Medical Center. As patients, we always felt supported and cared for by a wide community of skilled and compassionate professionals. I feel privileged to live so close to such an excellent healthcare system.” Marty Martens is a local business owner, Quarry Hill resident, and active supporter of our local healthcare system. Marty is also a long-time member of the Legacy Society. In response to your generosity, I’ve been thinking a lot about gratitude. Studies have shown that gratitude improves our minds, bodies and relationships. Gratitude increases happiness and life satisfaction. Gratitude is, in fact, good medicine. I am grateful for our colleagues at work, our donors, and our volunteers—ordinary community members who work collectively to accomplish extraordinary things. Together, through hard work, compassion and generosity, you bring hope, healing and wellness to people throughout our community. Raena Trojano Penney donates a portion of each paycheck to support dental care for those in need. As a Waldo County General Hospital employee, medical assistant in Dr. Maycock’s office and former receptionist at Waldo County Dental Care, Raena has seen firsthand how hard it is for patients who can’t afford to see a dentist. Raena says, “Waldo County Dental Care does such an excellent job caring for patients and teaching them the importance of taking care of their teeth.”
Paula Delahanty began her career at Pen Bay Medical Center in 1984, as a nurse on the medical surgical floor—and she never left. Over the past 34 years, Paula has worn many hats: Department Nurse Manager, Quality and Risk Manager, Manager of In-Patient Nursing, Chief Nursing Officer for both Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital, and now- Senior Regional Director of Education and Professional Development. While Paula’s job title and scope of duties have changed many times over the past three decades, what hasn’t changed is her commitment to patient care, and supporting others to achieve their fullest potential. This is why, each year, Paula directs her donation to support nursing scholarships and professional development funds for hospital staff.

A New Generation of Volunteers

Next summer, Waldo County General Hospital will be launching a new Junior Volunteer program to introduce high school students to career options at our local hospitals. The program has been offered for the past two summers at Pen Bay Medical Center and receives positive feedback from students and hospital staff alike. Skylee Middleton, a junior at Belfast Area High School, has always been interested in medicine. At age five she wanted to be a veterinarian, but by age ten she decided she would rather “help humans.” Last month, Jamie Geretz, the director of volunteers for Waldo County General Hospital and Pen Bay Medical Center, received this email from Skylee:

I was a part of PBMC’s Junior Volunteer program last summer. The experience was very eye-opening. You mentioned starting a Junior Volunteer program at Waldo County General Hospital next summer. I think that is a great idea—I would love to volunteer again, and help to get the program started. I know there are many people at my high school who would like to participate. Patient care at PBMC, WCGH and the Sussman House is greatly enriched by the thousands of hours of care and support provided, each year, by community volunteers. The Annual Fund provides critical support for Education and Care Innovation at Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital. These initiatives fund medical equipment and technology, address new health challenges, support emerging treatment options, and help secure a strong future for healthcare on the Midcoast. The Annual Fund also supports the Sussman House.
