Fourre, MD named new CEO
Mark Fourre, MD currently chief medical officer at LincolnHealth in Damariscotta and Boothbay Harbor, will assume leadership of Coastal Healthcare Alliance at the end of the year when CEO Mark Biscone retires. A native of Minnesota, Fourre earned his Medical Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Medical School. After completing his training at the UCSF Emergency Medicine residency program in Fresno, Calif., he became an assistant chief of
emergency medicine at that same hospital. In 1989 Fourre came to Portland and Maine Medical Center where he developed the Emergency Medicine Residency program and served as director. He has worked in roles of increasing responsibility with MaineHealth members since that time. “In Mark we get someone with experience delivering high quality care through a network of Healthcare providers. As we seek to maximize the opportunities of
Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospitalworking together, Mark is exactly the leader we need,” said Carole Brand, a member of the Coastal Healthcare Alliance Board and chair of the search committee.
In October, Waldo County General Hospital welcomed Erik Frederick, MHA as regional chief operating officer. Frederick has been chief operating officer at Pen Bay Medical Center since October 2013 and assumed the regional position at PBMC and WCGH on October 1. While at PBMC he was instrumental in developing the new Community Wellness Trail, a 1.66 mile health and wellness trail with nine fitness stations that runs through the PBMC campus with views of Penobscot Bay. Frederick is also responsible for bringing Lean daily management to PBMC and helping to launch it at other
MaineHealth member hospitals. Prior to arriving at PBMC, he served in a number of operating roles for the for-profit Vanguard Health Systems including the director of operations at the 627-bed Baptist Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and the chief operating officer at the 220-bed Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Frederick also served as regional
director of Lean operations for the four-hospital Vanguard market in Chicago and is a US Army combat veteran. He lives in Appleton with his wife Sonya, an RN and their four children. Erik has been named one of Becker’s Hospital Review’s Top 100 COOs to know, received a Vanguard Health Systems Mission Award, IASIS Healthcare President’s Award and received several medals as a military intelligence specialist in the US Army.

Damm, MD named regional chief medical officer Christopher Damm, MD has been selected as the new regional chief medical officer for Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital. Damm received his medical degree from Columbia University and a Masters of Business Administration from The Wharton
School at the University of Pennsylvania. Damm completed his residency and internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and completed a three-year fellowship in the Cardiovascular Division of the University of Pennsylvania
in Philadelphia. He also taught at Drexel University College of Medicine and at the University of Pennsylvania, both in Philadelphia. He has worked as a per diem hospitalist at Waldo County General Hospital several times since August 2015 and is currently on the hospital’s courtesy staff.
Fowler named associate chief operating officer
Rob Fowler, RN, BSN, is now the associate chief operating officer with primary responsibilities over Waldo County General Hospital operations. Prior to beginning his
new role, Fowler served as WCGH’s chief quality and support services officer and then became the regional officer. He has also served
as WCGH’s infection control nurse and worked in nursing positions. Fowler’s latest project has been overseeing the construction of the new medical office building at 119 Northport Ave. Fowler, his wife Jasmine and their three children, live in Morrill.
Daisy Award winner: Stacy Keating
Congratulations to our 4th quarter Daisy Award winner, ICU RN, Stacy Keating. The Daisy Award recognizes the extraordinary work nurses do for patients and their families every day. Daisy Award nominations are accepted from patients and their families, staff and physicians. The winner is selected by the Patient & Family Advisory Council. The family who nominated Stacy wrote: “Our Dad is in Waldo County General Hospital once or twice a year for pneumonia. Stacy enjoys her work, shows compassion and is a good listener. When the patient’s family learned that Stacy had won, they replied, “Stacy is very deserving of the award and we need more nurses like her. Hospitals can be scary for those of us who do not understand all of what is happening, having someone take the time to explain and reassure us is important.”

Congratulations to Gail Dudley, RN, BSN, perioperative services director, who has been named to the Maine State Board of Nursing. The mission of the Board of Nursing is to protect the public health and welfare in the area of nursing practice. She was sworn in by Dedimus Justice Irene Blood, shown at right in the photo above.
United Mid-Coast Charities supports programming
Special thanks to United Mid-Coast Charities (UMCC) for their generous support. With gifts totaling $15,000, UMCC is strengthening vital community programs and services like CarePartners, Public Health Nursing and Waldo County Dental Care. A $2,500 check from UMCC will help provide services through the public health nursing association, which helps Belfast r residents who otherwise might fall through the cracks from newborns to the elderly. A $2,500 grant check was also received for CarePartners, which helps those without adequate insurance coverage to be hooked up with a primary care provider. A third donation of a $10,000 was given to Waldo County Dental Care, which provides uninsured and under-insured adults with dental services. UMCC is dedicated to the support of charities which provide social services and care to those most deserving, including medical, physical, social, psychiatric or community educational services.
MaineHealth, WCGH cited for healthier food options The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which works with the private sector and PHA Honorary Chair First Lady Michelle Obama to make healthier choices easier, has recognized MaineHealth with the Healthier Future Award. Nearly 10 percent of hospitals in the U.S. have joined PHA’s Hospital Healthier Food Initiative. As one of the first hospital systems to join in October 2012, MaineHealth has delivered healthier options for patients, visitors and employees eating at 10 of its facilities across the state. MaineHealth has made significant strides in the effort to create an overall culture of health at its 10 hospitals, developing a special logo to designate better-for-you food options in order to drive customers to make healthier choices. WCGH was one of MaineHealth members involved in the initiative.
Waldo County Dental Care receives $5,000
Waldo County Dental Care would like to thank athenahealth for a $5,000 grant in support of providing dental care to our community. The grant was awarded as part of the athenaGives program, now in its sixth year, which aids innovative nonprofits exhibiting athenahealth’s mission to “unbreakhealthcare.” The winners of the athenaGives grant funds are voted on by their employees. Waldo County has half the dentists per capita as the state average. Waldo County General Hospital opened Maine’s first hospital-owned dental safety-net clinic, in 2013. Since then, they have helped more than 1,400 local individuals get the dental care they need to be healthy. Today, the clinic has an active caseload of 1,113 low-income, uninsured patients and since it opened, the emergency department has reported a 36 percent reduction in dental patients.
Change in Best Café jar adds up
Thanks to our colleagues and visitors for contributing change to our patient care services jar in the cafeteria. With your support, the Best Café was able to contribute $465 to the patient care fund in oncology and $464 to patient care services in hospice.

New building named for Biscone
Waldo County General Hospital broke ground January 8 for the new medical office building to be constructed at 119 Northport Avenue. Top, the ribbon for the new building was cut Saturday, November 12. Thibodeau. The 20,000 sq. ft. building will house eight primary care providers and associated services on the first floor. On the second floor will be diabetes services, the anticoagulation clinic, some administrative offices, an educational lab and training areas. The building will be open to patients in early December.
WCGH Aid’s Silver Tea to be held Dec. 7

The Hospital Aid’s annual Silver Tea will be held December 7, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the home of Manley Rogers, 27 Church St., Belfast. The public is invited to attend and enjoy refreshments served by Aid members. The Rogers residence is an 1844 Greek revival style house. The home was built by Belfast merchant James H. Spring, who came to Belfast from Watertown, Mass., in 1800 and is prominently identified with the early history of Belfast. The house features an entrance
