Pen Bay Medical Center Earns ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety in April 2016 Hospital Safety Score

The Leapfrong Group has announced the Spring 2016 Hospital Safety Scores which assign grades to hospitals nationwide and provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S. health care system. Pen Bay Medical Center has received an ‘A’ grade, ranking among the safest hospitals in the United States. This continues Pen Bay Medical Center’s designation as a “Straight A’s” hospital for never receiving a grade lower than an A from the Hospital Safety Score since the Score first launched in June 2012. Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. For the first time, the Hospital Safety Score includes five measures of patient-reported experience with the hospital as well as two of the most common infections, C.diff and MRSA. Beetroot Juice Study Launched at Pen Bay Medical Center

Ralph Hamill, MD of MaineHealth Cardiology recently launched a research study at Pen Bay Medical Center focused on beetroot juice as a treatment option for heart failure. Many patients with heart failure have difficulty exercising or even doing routine daily activities. Beetroot juice has been shown to improve exercise tolerance, particularly in endurance sporting events such as cycling or long distance running. Studies have also shown exercise endurance improved in patients with heart failure after a single dose of beetroot juice. Dr. Hamill’s study began on March 30 and is designed to observe the effects of beetroot juice on patients with heart failure after one week of daily intake. Patients diagnosed with heart failure may qualify for the study. If you are a patient that is interested in becoming a part of the study, please contact Caroline Knight, RN, CCRP, clinical research specialist at 207-921-8959. 

Pen Bay Medical Center Plans New Fitness Trail

A 1.75 mile long fitness trail is in development on Pen Bay Medical Center’s Glen Cove Drive campus. The wooded trail will include 10 bodyweight fitness stations and an observation deck overlooking Penobscot Bay with stairs to the water. Construction will begin in May and is expected to conclude by mid-July. The fitness trail project underscores Pen Bay’s commitment to community health, said Pen Bay Healthcare Foundation vice president of development, Ellie Willmann. “We’ve received a tremendous amount of interest in this project from people who see the trail as a great asset for everyone in our community," said Willmann. "Getting outside, being active and enjoying nature are such an important part of health and wellness, and that’s something Pen Bay Medical Center is always looking to promote.” The project, which is estimated to cost $200,000, will be funded entirely by donors. The Pen Bay Healthcare Foundation, with the help of its New Leadership Council, has already raised almost $60,000. Sponsorship and naming opportunities are available for area businesses.
