Pen Bay Medical Center receives Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Pen Bay Medical Center recently received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

Jeff Space, director of nutritional services, was invited to be a guest chef at New England's Farm to Institution Summit at Unity College in June. Jeff did a cooking demo and prepared two dishes using local ingredients. FINE selected Jeff and Pen Bay Medical Center to participate to highlight PBMC’s model of using local produce in the hospital. Jeff prepared a Spinach and Arugula Salad with Shaved Celeriac and Crumbled Goat Cheese drizzled with a Chive EVOO Emulsion and Celeriac, Chive and Goat Cheese Gratin served with an Acadian Ploye. 

Hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality measures to receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

PBMC Updates PBMC Spotlight: Knox Center

As the seasons transition from spring into summer the Knox Center for Long Term Care is also transitioning the facility name to the ‘Knox Center’ to better reflect the nature of services provided. The facility continues to provide the traditional long term care services on both the first floor nursing and second floor memory care nursing units. The change in name serves to recognize the incredible value our short term skilled nursing unit brings to the community. This short term service is available to individuals with a qualifying hospital stay and a nursing and/or rehabilitation need. Ask your hospital discharge planner for information about the Knox Center when it is time to be discharged from the hospital. The unit is accepting referrals and with the nursing, social service, dining services and rehabilitation team, patients are able to progress to their highest level of independence prior to moving back home or to the next appropriate location. The Knox Center makes every effort to ease each transition for each individual patient. The Knox Center recently received confirmation that the request for a grant of $250 through the Crimestoppers Program sponsored by First National Bank has been accepted. The grant will assist the facility in providing a lobster roll luncheon at the facility this summer. The honored guests will be members of the Coast Guard who dock here at the Rockland base. These men and women visit individually with each Knox resident and the Knox Center greatly appreciates their time spent at the facility. The Knox Center looks forward to a summer of fun activities with residents and highlighting all of the services provided to the Midcoast community with the transition to the updated name over the next few months. For more information on the Knox Center and the services provided, please visit https://www.penbayhealthcare.org/knoxcenter/ or call 207-921-6800.

Pen Bay Medical Center is proud to partner with the Mid-Coast School of Technology CNA Apprenticeship Adult Education Program to provide students with the opportunity to work at PBMC while earning their CNA designation. The program launched in March as a joint effort between Pen Bay Medical Center, the MidCoast School of Technology’s (MCST) Adult Education CNA program, Central Lincoln County (CLC) Adult Education, LincolnHealth and the Maine State Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship program. Through this “earn while you learn” apprenticeship program, the CNA students were able to attend the CNA course at no charge as well as receive compensation as short-term employees of Pen Bay Medical Center or their affiliated services. In exchange for this support, CNA apprentices signed an 18-month work agreement to work at either Quarry Hill or the Knox Center upon graduation from the MCST CNA Course. Currently working at Quarry Hill in Camden and the Knox Center in Rockland are the first class of six Pen Bay Medical Center CNA apprentices who successfully graduated from the MidCoast School of Technology’s CNA Course on June 2. For more information on the fall session, which begins on August 29, please contact Marianne Doyle at the Mid-Coast School of Technology at 207-596-7752 or mdoyle@mcst8.org or Cathy Cole at PBMC at 207-921-8440.
