According to the myths of ancient Rome, Jupiter, as ruler of the universe, decided to allot certain parts pf planet Earth to his brothers, and he assigned the sea to Neptune (or Poseidon, as the Greeks would have it.) From that time on, Neptune tended to eschew Olympus in favour of his new domain, and to make his home within its depths. It was believed that he could call up the wildest storms, or quell them, according to his whim—a facility of which the poet Homer was to write. “He spake, and round about him called the clouds / And roused the ocean—wielding in his hand The trident—summoned all the hurricanes / Of all the winds, and covered the earth and sky / At once with mists, while from above the night / Fell suddenly.” 3
