SCOURGE OF HYACINTHS An Opera in Twelve Scenes Based on the radio play "A Scourge of Hyacinths" by Wole Soyinka

ACT I

ACT II

Scene 1

Prison. From their cell, prisoners are watching a canoe trying to reach the prison walls to deliver letters and messages from outside. The messenger is not able to break through the labyrinth of the water hyacinths with the boat.

Scene 2

Prison. Miguel Domingo and two other prisoners, Detiba and Emuke, are led to their cells.

Scene 3

Flashback. Miguel’s mother Tiatin prays to Yemanja. She thinks the rampant growth of the water hyacinths is a punishment sent by the goddess: the water hyacinths block the water ways; the political system blocks the nation. Miguel intends to flee the country.

Scene 4

Prison. The superintendent reassures Miguel about his trial. Miguel’s fellow inmates wonder why, having been released on bail, he is back inside again.

Scene 5

Flashback. Tiatin tries to persuade her son to stay. She reminds him of their ancestry and the pride in the family name. The mother also believes that her favorite son enjoys the protection of the goddess Yemanja.

Scene 6

Prison. The prisoners discuss Miguel’s situation. Miguel keeps referring to the tremendous proliferation of the water hyacinths which render any kind of movement impossible.

Scene 7

Flashback. Tiatin tries to persuade her son to stay.

Scene 8

Flashback. At the airport. Miguel, accompanied by his friend Chime, tries to leave the country by plane. He recognizes a detective, however, who is shadowing him. Miguel and Chime decide to change their escape plan and to hide for awhile on the island of the goddess Yemanja.

Scene 9

Flashback. The crossing to the island of Yemanja turns out to be a disaster for Miguel and Chime. They never reach the island as the water hyacinths and searchlights become formidable obstacles to freedom.

Scene 10

Prison. A new warder tries to ingratiate himself with the prisoners. Miguel receives newspaper clippings about his case from another warder. The superintendent appears and collects the three prisoners for a trial. The prisoners are surprised that a trial should be held on a holiday.

Scene 11

At the same time as Miguel is being led out of the cell, Tiatin calls on the goddess Yemanja and prays for her son.

Scene 12

Prison. The three prisoners are led out through the gate. A distant crowd becomes audible. Three single shots are fired.
