LETTER from the PUBLISHER I love the summer. The days are long and the ambience relaxed. The weeks ahead are sure to be filled with sunshine and good times. At this time of year, the natural beauty of the North Shore is at its full glory, from the shimmering waters of the Long Island Sound to our lush parks and the undulating velvety greens of our public and private golf courses. erhaps the most breathtaking example of the North Shore’s beauty can be found at Spring Hill. In this issue we look at developer John Kean’s new 160-acre gated community in Old Westbury. When complete, 22 new yet classic country estates on five to 10 acre lots will grace the former Ogden Phipps estate with its lush meadowlands and rolling hills. Each home -- 12 lots so far are called for -- will be a masterpiece of timeless elegance. The community also has a six-acre lake stocked with thousands of fish and a romantic boathouse. Even Phipps’ stables are being restored to their previous splendor. And, of course, we celebrate our own backyards, however big or small. Beyond the pool and the sports courts, our lawns are increasingly becoming indoor/ outdoor living spaces with koi ponds and waterfalls, fire features, cabanas and good-looking, comfy outside decor that makes a statement all its own. Still, there’s nothing like the beach. You don’t need to travel far or to sit in traffic to enjoy a morning or afternoon at our favorite Gold Coast beaches. From the North Hempstead Beach Park that now incorporates Bar Beach to Oyster Bay’s Centre Island Beach and in the town of Huntington, Asharoken Beach and Crab Meadow Park, we take a look at what our best beaches have to offer. While we’re by the water, we also savor the best of our favorite waterside restaurants, from the dockside terrace at Prime on Huntington Harbor to Wall’s Wharf in Bayville and the Soundview by the golf course on the Glen Cove waterfront. Summertime is also perfect for strolling or cycling through our lovely villages and towns. Locust Valley, one of the North Shore’s finest, is blessed with a charming main street, unrivaled natural beauty, gardens and exquisite homes. Even the local cemetery is a jewel. Our other hot spots in this issue could be anywhere around the globe. Take your pick. As our travel story on vacation rentals suggests, renting a luxury home rather than staying in a hotel is a great way to bring the whole clan and enjoy time off like a local ... in London, Paris, Barcelona or even Bali. Have a great summer, but as the wonderful anecdote in our Good Life column suggests, be sun safe. Happy reading.

THE mansion maker

the work of john kean By m.c. sussman

10 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

John Kean, the president and ceo of Kean Development, based in Cold Spring Harbor, is a master builder of dream homes. For more than three decades, his eponymous design/ build firm has specialized in designing, constructing and landscaping the finest classic mansions and exclusive residential communities on Long Island’s North Shore, in the Hamptons, Manhattan, Greenwich, CT and Palm Beach, FL. e are called in for the very high end houses,” Kean says. Kean has built scores of super luxurious homes, paying close attention to historical detail and proportions, gathering stones from five upstate quarries to get just the right look and often scouring the globe for materials to be more authentic. As a result, his stately Georgian stone manors, English Cotswold, French Country, and Shingle-style homes exude a sense of timeless elegance that can’t be pegged to a particular decade. Moreover, the new construction provides a turn-of-the-last century look with 21st century amenities, like large eat-in kitchens, huge closets and computerized smart house systems. Energy efficiency is also part of the package: green features like spray-in insulation and geothermal heating and cooling are standard. “The wealthy buyer is still there and still wants very large houses, even larger than before the downturn,” Kean says. “We can accommodate whatever people want.” At Spring Hill, his grand new gated community for the super rich in Old Westbury, Kean is the exclusive

“W

builder. To date, 12 of 22 five to 10 acre lots have been sold. Kean says he chose to keep the character of the 160 acre former Ogden Phipps estate intact rather than double the density. (The original Phipps’ Italian Renaissance villa, set on a hilltop overlooking a swimming pool and a grass tennis court turned helicopter pad, was torn down in 1979.) So far, the new mansions built by Kean Development Company and designed by Kean’s exclusive architectural team, Andrew V Giambertone & Associates, Architects,

are “all very substantial houses” ranging from 10,000 square feet to more than 32,000 square feet. The community has a staffed gatehouse and a floating boathouse on a three-acre man-made lake stocked with thousands of fish. Though numerous trees were lost during Sandy, many ancient specimen trees embellish the lush landscape. One home under construction at Spring Hill is a 28,000 square foot, seven bedroom French Country manor on a seven-acre lot. Among the amenities taking shape on its lower level are two bowling alleys, a movie theater, a basketball court, a climate controlled wine cellar and an indoor pool and spa. An English estate being designed in the turn of the century Cotswold Arts and Crafts style is underway on eight acres. Kean’s company also does the landscape design and maintenance. Buyers at Spring Hill range from young families with very young children to families whose children are out of college, retirees and a celebrity whose name he wouldn’t divulge. “We are not for everyone, and that’s ok,” Kean says. Regardless of size, elevators and staff quarters will be standard; four-car garages are the minimum; one home has plans for a 20 car garage and for another, the owner is requesting an underground 30 car garage. For those who need to see a house to buy it, Kean is building two spec homes at Spring Hill -- a 12,000 square foot stone manor and a 7000 square foot shingle SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY 11

style home, that he says will be “ super competitive.” Though many of the mansions in this super wealthy enclave will hit $30 million, “we want to build a house in here that will be affordable to the average millionaire,” Kean says. Lots range from $875,000 per acre to more than $1 million per acre, paid in full. Construction is paid in stages. Typically Kean’s buyers have such deep pockets for his $1,000 per square foot homes that, though bankers are lined up, most buyers pay cash.

start mowing lawns while still in grammar school. By high school, he had expanded to landscaping. When an estate owner asked if he could renovate an old cottage on his property, Kean analyzed the turn-of-the-century structure, figuring out “why they built it the way they did.” Using his new found knowledge of “how a house is supposed to be put together and my keen sense of design,” he began redoing cottages on many other estates. When another property owner asked him whether he thought opening a boat-

Kean says, that despite a reputation that he’s very expensive, he never loses a bid and considers his firm to be “as competitive as our competitors.” He added, “When 90 percent of the people call me, they are prepared to spend money. Years ago, Kean built Gracewood, a gated community of 141 homes on 80 acres in Manhasset, transforming the original mansion into a clubhouse with an indoor pool. At the time the homes sold for $595,000 each; now they fetch $2.6 million. Among Kean’s upcoming projects is Redcote Farms in Oyster Bay Cove, which will have 16 new homes on two acre lots. The name of the new subdivision is reminiscent of the fox hunts initiated on the property at the turn of the century. At La Rue Lane adjoining Lloyd Harbor, Kean is planning to build a Nantucket-style neighborhood geared towards empty nesters who don’t need the big house and the pool anymore. The 14 smaller homes will have picket fences and surround a large, oval-shaped green where everyone can “gather and relax,” Kean says. Kean’s rise to the top of the luxury residential building industry got a humble 12 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

yard on a corner in Huntington was a good idea, Kean felt that it would be a money pit. Instead, he suggested that since it was two blocks from a hospital, it would be more suited to professional offices. That led to his first new construction job, an office condo building. It sold out to physicians. In 1980, Kean ventured into high end residential development. Within three to four years he hit “a home run.” After subdividing land he bought in Cold Spring Harbor for 20 homes, he sold it to another developer. When the developer lost the subdivision to the bank, Kean bought it back and built out the neighborhood. These days Kean Development’s scope ranges from land acquisition and development to architectural, interior and landscape design and construction management. As one of the largest and most successful full-service luxury residential design/ build firms in the nation, Kean excels at the logistics of building homes and building reputations. As his firm’s motto suggests, “We don’t just build homes, we build lifestyles.” Looking back, Kean says, “It’s been a great ride. Do what you love and you’ll become successful. I love what I do.” SE

ean Developments’ Spring Hill in Old Westbury is well on its way to becoming the North Shore’s premier and idyllic gated community, a fresh confluence of classic design, preservation and stunning natural beauty. Situated on 160 picturesque, rolling acres with lush meadowland, arboretum-quality trees and a boathouse overlooking a six-acre fresh water lake stocked with fish, Spring Hill will be home to 22 pristine, traditional country estates on five to 10 acre parcels. Ten lots from the original offering are currently available. The homes at Spring Hill will be among the finest super luxurious mansions for which John Kean is revered. The stately Georgian stone manors, English Cotswold, French Country and Shingle-style villas, ranging from about 10,000 square feet to more than 32,000 square feet, exude timeless elegance and are individually designed to each parcel owner’s specifications. They feature the latest and finest 21st century amenities, such as large eatin kitchens, huge closets, computerized smart house systems and geothermal heating and cooling. A minimum of four-car garages are standard. The Phipps family, a name that defined Gold Coast living, called Spring Hill home throughout the mid-20th century. The estate’s original Italianate mansion was commissioned by W.L. Stow, designed by the prolific architect of the time, John Russell Pope, and later acquired by Henry Carnegie Phipps. Though the mansion, the little sister of Old Westbury Gardens’ Westbury House, was demolished in 1979, many of Pope’s architectural expressions are echoed in the distinctive, collaborative and timeless designs of Team Kean, Kean Development’s creative design venture team. Ogden Phipps kept champion thoroughbred horses on the estate. As part of the rebirth of Spring Hill’s grandeur, its once handsome stables and paddocks

will be returned to their original glory. Additionally, the greenhouses where Phipps maintained his famed international orchid collection will be refurbished by the English firm that originally built them. Even the once spectacular wall buttressing the ridge on which the mansion stood and its noble balustrade tracing the hilltop will be restored to its former splendor. Sequestered beyond a manned gatehouse, Spring Hill’s pristine grounds are beautifully manicured with river rock edging the winding roads. Privacy and aesthetics are integral to this extraordinary community, once associated with the American aristocracy and home again to some of today’s captains of industry, banking and philanthropy and Hollywood stars. Spring Hill’s location is the epitome of convenience, a 22-minute ride from Manhattan and minutes from Americana at Manhasset’s collection of top of the line luxury stores like Gucci, Van Cleef & Arpels and Hermes as well as fine restaurants. Cultural venues nearby include the Nassau County Museum of Art, Old Westbury Gardens, arboretums and Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill. Private country and golf clubs like Glen Oaks and the Meadow Brook Club, polo fields and beach clubs are nearby and bridle paths continue to contour the land. The community straddles the topranked East Williston and Roslyn school districts, and is close to excellent teaching hospitals, universities and the renowned Cold Spring Harbor Labs. The new Spring Hill community of superb luxury homes is destined to be a verdant haven and a remarkable historic tribute to the architectural grandeur and natural beauty of the North Shore. SE

Designer Spaces :

Steven Marc Wasserman Evoking EmotionS THROUGH Inter ior Design By DONNA KUTT NAHAS “There’s an old adage in the interior design business,” says interior designer Steven Marc Wasserman. “When the designer is in control, everyone wins. The clients win because they have the home of their dreams and the designer wins because he has something to be proud of in his portfolio.” The motto, which has guided Wasserman throughout his nearly four decade career, was tested several years ago when a client insisted on preparing a bold, bright, bordello red bedroom for his new bride. At first, the Oyster Bay-based designer, who favors a conservative approach to mixing traditional with contemporary, was challenged by the request. “Although my client couldn’t be swayed from the bordello red, I told him we would give him the best red bedroom we could,” recalled Wasserman. “We used well-made fabrics, upholstered the wall with a red silk fabric with gold running through it. There was an oil painting of a nude and a chandelier. He loved it, and I was proud of it.” Wasserman’s portfolio not only features the bordello red bedroom but designs that range from Country French to traditional to ultra-modern. “I have done it all,” says Wasserman who works with a design assistant based in Williamsburg, Va. The self-admitted “King of Patterns” relishes layering stripes, florals and plaids, and combining color, texture, clean lines and the use of durable fabrics. “If a client wants ultra-contemporary and she has an antique sewing table with beautiful details from her greatgrandmother, I’ll use that as an end table, because it has meaning in her life.” He specializes in both commercial and residential 14 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

interior design, though the bulk of his projects are primary and secondary residences that dot the East Coast, extending from Long Island and New York City north to Boston and south to Maryland, Washington, D.C., and along Florida’s Gold Coast, including Del Ray Beach, Boca Raton and Boynton Beach. He has also designed homes in Chicago, Colorado and California. Of the roughly half-dozen homes ranging in size from 2,000 to 12,000 square feet that he completes a year, less than 10 percent are ground-up construction. Highlights of his commercial work include the Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan boutiques at Bergdorf Goodman’s posh department store in Manhattan and Tesoro’s Ristorante in Westbury. He also serves as the in-house designer for the Long Island and Manhattan franchises of Bagel Boss. Wasserman, who says his business grows by word of mouth rather than advertising, chalks up his long-term success to listening first and then advising his clients. “Listening and advising are the only two ways to have your fingers on the pulse of a client,” he said. As a result, many of his clients become repeat customers. Wasserman studied design at the New York School of Interior Design and Parsons The New School for Design. Unlike many interior designers, he does not charge for his first consultation. “I interview them and it’s their chance to interview me and look at my portfolio,” he said. “The most important question for my clients is ‘Tell me about your life?’ Working with a designer is a very personal experience because you have to share with

me two of the most private things about you: how you live and your budget.” Favoring a hands-on approach, he shops with his clients and combs the Decoration and Design Building in Manhattan and retail stores from Crate and Barrel to Pier 1 and Raymour & Flanigan to find just the right accessory, end table or accent piece. But if clients prefer to shop on their own, “it’s to their advantage if they let me see what they are picking out. Ultimately, it’s their home, but it’s my job to tell them that that carpet isn’t going to work for this reason.” An avid traveler, he says his work has been influenced by the culture, lifestyle and architectural elements found in South America, Europe and Asia. “Just as explorer Marco Polo brought back spices from the Orient, I incorporate something of a country’s culture into my work,” he said, adding that he appreciates how splashes of bold color in the Indian culture can add drama and flair to a room. Wasserman launched his design business in 1977 several years after earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in theatre. During his sophomore year at Ithaca College, he discovered his penchant for design. “Set design enables you to create an illusion,” he says. “The set in the play “South Pacific” made it look as though the actors were really in the South Pacific islands.” Similarly, interior design creates an illusion of space, he explained, by transporting a person to a place and “evoking an emotional response through the placement and use of color, light, textures and patterns. That’s what design is meant to do.” SE

SELLING CELEBRITY: REAL ESTATE OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS By M.C. SUSSMAN

From Groucho Marx to Alicia Keys, the North Shore of Long Island has long been home to celebrities and captains of industry. When it comes to selling their homes, however, the cachet of celebrity -- or notoriety -- may not add to the price it will fetch or even make it easier to sell. Still, a home that belongs to a celebrity is often looked at with more anticipation and excitement than its neighbors. Peter B. Madoff’s grand white mansion on four lush Old Westbury acres with a long winding driveway, two bedroom poolhouse and tennis court had a field day when it hit the market recently for $4.495 million, garMadoff property details on page 55 nering attention in The New York Times and other major newspapers, on television, radio and across the internet. With the younger brother and chief compliance officer for Ponzi scheme mastermind Bernie Madoff off to jail earlier this year, the United States Marshall’s service took possession of the grandiose criminal’s lair. They put it on the market in late April, awarding Shawn Elliott the listing. Some potential buyers who have seen the home have wondered about the Madoffs and a few have made offers not yet accepted. But Shawn avoids discussing the notorious brothers, interested instead in getting the victims “as much money as humanly possible.” Although privacy and security concerns keep Shawn Elliott sales agent Kayrn Rotter from using a former Stanley Cup winner’s name these days when showing the former Islanders’ $1,750,000 home in Oyster Bay Cove, “when you walk in there, you know it’s his house,” Rotter said. “They don’t want people coming to the house just because it’s his house.” A room full of his trophies is one clue; photos of his children, the Stanley Cup and a big portrait when they retired his number make it a cinch. Another giveaway is the collection of shirts from every NHL team hanging on the wall of his son’s childhood room. Now grown, his son is also a professional hockey player. “They think it’s very cool,” Kayrn said of the potential buyers. At least one looker “loved the idea that it was his house.” But when an offer came from Rangers fans, the agent gently asked them to switch loyalties. They passed. After the comedian Alan King’s death nine years ago, his widow put their 6,457 square foot Tudor mansion on 2.39 waterfront Kings Point acres on the market, asking $22 million for the lush property that also included a pool, a tennis court, a guest cottage and a private rocky beach. At the time it was the highest-priced home on the market west of the Hamptons, according to the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island. The property’s provenance was impeccable. The lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II built the residence in 1926, a year before he wrote “Show Boat,” and threw parties that included F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and the singer Eddie Cantor. Still, King’s home fetched only $12.75 million, and the new owner, a businessman, knocked it down and replaced it with a far grander home.

Kenjockety, a 6.7 acre spread in Lloyd Harbor owned in the early 1980s by Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, languished for years under its subsequent ownership when it went on the market in 2002 for $17.5 million. The price gradually sank. In January, 2011, after changing listing brokers to Shawn Elliott’s Suzanne Wehren, the price was upped half a million dollars. Within three weeks, the seven bedroom, seven full and three half bath 1926 Tudor-style mansion with 10 fireplaces, an in ground pool and 500 feet of waterfront with deeded docking rights, was sold by Maria Siringo, another Shawn Elliott broker, for $8.99 million. The celebrity factor becomes “a point of interest,” Shawn Elliott said. “People like when they hear stories about a house.” Before Grammy Award-winning musician Alicia Keys sold her gated 9,000-square-foot seven bedroom, six and one half bath mansion in Muttontown two years ago, the 2.2 acre gated property sat on the market for 266 days. The price of the original $3.85 million dollar listing was dropped twice and sold for $2.995 million, nearly a million dollar less. The property also had a pool, Jacuzzi and pool house, a three car garage and annual property taxes of $40,970. The property was marketed and sold by Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes and Estates. Former New York Jets football quarterback Chad Pennington’s 7,000 square foot Muttontown spread went on the market in 2008 for $4.095 million and was subsequently lowered to $3.995 million. The two acre estate went into contract within 30 days for close to the asking price, recalled Shawn Elliott, whose company represented both buyer and seller. The home had a gunite pool with a waterfall, a gym, a billiards room and a four car garage. But celebrity is no guarantee of a good buy, no matter the price. When the contemporary home of a well-regarded CEO of a successful retail chain came on the market in Old Brookville eight years ago, his stature was enough to convince the buyers that the home must be in tiptop shape. They bought it, only to have its new roof leak when it rained two days after they moved in. And that was just the start. According to the real estate website Curbed.com, celebrity homes often seem to sit longer on the market and they seem to “have more trouble than the regular old plebs do.” It could be the stratospheric prices or that the rich and famous can afford to let a house sit on the market. Christina Aguilera’s Beverly Hills mansion, for instance, was listed in March, 2011 for $13.5 million. Though it boasts a private beauty salon, a gift wrapping area and a guest house with a recording studio, it is languishing on the market at the same price. In Venice, CA, Anjelica Huston listed her home in September, 2010 for $18 million. But the deal fell through after rumors that the manse was going to be converted into a private social club. Huston’s home is now listed for $13.9 million. SE

LUXURY LIFE

LIFE OUTBACK: BACKYARDS are now for OUTDOOR LIVING By LAURIE NADEL Backyards these days are more than flower beds, birdbaths, and Adirondack chairs. “People want their backyard to be an extension of their house so they are looking for indoor/outdoor living spaces,” said Mark Bottone, President of Coastal Designs in Huntington. A landscape designer for the past 42 years, Mark credits this trend to changes in the housing market. “People are investing back into their homes instead of moving,” he said. “Sales of outdoor furniture and barbecues are up. People want their patio furniture to look like indoor couches.” ark calls the new look “country Hamptons.” “The landscape looks less structured and has a whimsical layout with perennials, plantings with different textures and a lot of grasses which move.” Naturalistic terraces with waterfalls and koi ponds add texture and movement. Bill Einhorn, President of the New York chapter of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, explained a new consciousness. “People are more plant-sensitive so they are putting in more noninvasive plants that are native to the area and they are using less chemicals.” It is no longer your mother’s backyard. The landscaping can cost you anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000. That’s not counting an inground pool and patio which brings the price up another $30,000 to $50,000. And don’t forget a flat screen TV, a sound system, custom outdoor lighting and outdoor furniture. Plump, comfy cushions made from fade and mold resistant Sunbrellalike fabrics are paired with all-weather sectionals that look like wicker or resin and coffee tables with built-in firepits, and picnic tables fit for a banquet.

M

18 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

The sky is the limit. Mark Bottone, for example, outfitted an estate in Old Westbury with two waterfalls, a pond, an inground pool with a cabana and bar, a tennis court, an outdoor kitchen with a chimney, and an overhead pergola. The job took several years and more than $5,000,000 to complete. Mark called it “a work in progress.” For a more cost-effective option, consider a TREK ™ deck with a gazebo fitted out with a deluxe Weber grill, ceiling fans, and a bar. “A gazebo serves multiple purposes. It sits on your deck and provides shade so that you can get out of the sun for a while during the day,” said Sandy Denicker, President of Carosan Contracting Corporation in Fort Salonga. “You can stretch out on a lounge chair and listen to the game. In the evening, you can cook and eat there as well.” Sandy pointed out that “since the mosquito population on the Island is out of control, you can’t sit outside after six p.m.” Gazebos with screens offer you an indoor/outdoor dining experience without getting eaten alive. A custom gazebo with electricity and natural gas lines for a barbecue can cost between $15,000 and $40,000. If your ideal outdoor experience is practicing your golf swing, you can turn your back yard into a custom putting green. Mike Grismodi of Elite Synthetic Surfaces in Jericho has been designing and installing nylon greens with synthetic grass for residential properties since 2000. “Generally a putting green is a higher end item. It can run anywhere from $5,000 to $250,000 and up for a large green with sand traps,” Grismodi said. If you want sparkle, gentle sound, and sinuous

movement, waterfalls and ponds are the way to go. “A lot of people want to expand their backyard experience with a pond,” said Shawn Rosen, President of Koi Market North in Huntington. “What better way to add serenity with a water garden or a Japanese garden look than with a koi pond?” asked Shawn, who opened an online koi business six years ago before expanding to designing, installing, and maintaining koi ponds for residential customers on the North Shore. “The difference between the average landscaper and us is that we look at the health of each fish with the best type of filtration and bottom drains,” he said. One three-inch long starter fish can cost five dollars; a shiwa koi can cost $2,000. The cost of a koi pond ranges from $3,000 to $10,000. Outdoor lighting has come a long way from the basic floodlight. Vernon Daniel Associates in Cold Spring Harbor designs lighting displays that enhance every aspect of your property. “Use of the property at night is key from both security and aesthetics points of view. A client needs to think in terms of overall design,” said Vernon Daniel’s Vice President Ken Smith. “Is he or she looking for drama, security concerns, or looking to develop the property as a whole?” Mr. Smith sometimes begins his initial presentation to a client by shining a flashlight directly into his client’s eyes. “This is what you normally see when you go to someone’s house when there is a floodlight,” explained one client, a Muttontown resident who preferred to remain anonymous. “Our house at night looks like Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The uplighting comes up on the courtyard wall and downlighting comes from the trees onto the house. It makes the house and it’s amazing.” SE

Luxotics provides the entire spectrum of automotive services in one-stop shopping, Spencer added, “Even among exotic car lovers, above all, the ultimate luxury is time.”

Fulfilling the Passion For Luxury and Exotic Car Experiences

A

sensible car may get you where you want to go, but there’s nothing like an exotic car to accelerate your lifestyle. The speed and easy handling are great attractions, matched by the power felt behind the wheel. Not only do they look magnificent, but when you drive a luxury or exotic car, you can’t help but be noticed. Spencer Ross, Gabriel Hale, & Rakeem Pierre-Louis, business partners and friends, have always been interested in luxury and exotic cars. They recognized their passion as an opportunity for a new business. Luxotics started in 2011 as a private concierge-based company, serving only a select few and privileged clients—including celebrities, hip hop artists and TV reality show stars. “We don’t just sell cars; we sell a lifestyle,” Spencer said. “Even among exotic car lovers, above all, the ultimate luxury is time and you want to do it with style and finesse.” Luxotics also provides the entire spectrum of automotive services in one-stop shopping, Spencer added. While working at a Long Island luxury and exotic car dealership, Gabriel noticed that while one customer was looking to lease a Ferrari, a second wanted to ship his Bentley across the country, and a third was interested in upgrading his Mercedes with new rims and fancier

details. Then there were those who wanted to rent a Lamborghini for the weekend, or a luxury limo for a private party. “Suddenly, the idea hit me,” Gabriel recalled. “I wanted to provide a complete solution to all of my customers’ luxury and exotic automobile desires—to offer them onestop shopping with an AMEX black card experience.” Their overwhelming success drove Spencer, Gabriel, & Rakeem to expand the concept, and as Gabriel explained, “to offer the same opportunity to the entire world.” The New York International Auto Show, held this April, was a perfect venue for the official launch of the

Luxotics Automobile Agency, which covers every aspect in the car world—from car sales, leasing, consignment to custom upgrading to rentals of luxury and exotic cars and limos, shipping and storage, even car washing. A Ferrari for a day would cost you a bit more than $1,000. For about $4,000, you can rent a Bentley convertible for a weekend, delivered right to your front door. Or perhaps a chauffeured Rolls Royce, equipped with a bottle of champagne with all the bells and whistles for a decadent night out in Luxotics style. “People identify themselves with the car they drive,” Rakeem says. “Driving an exotic car is an adrenaline rush.” For Johnny Donovan, a Manhattan talent agent, summer time and Luxotics automobiles are a perfect match “If any of my clients want to rent an exotic car for a weekend in the Hamptons, I know they’ll receive extraordinary care and service with Luxotics.” As Michael Maddaloni of Maddaloni Jewelers in Huntington put it: “Our respective customer base brings Luxotics & Maddaloni Jewelers together, from the likes of fine jewelry & timepieces to elite luxury and exotic cars.” Summer is around the corner and now is the time to spoil yourself in pure luxury with the Luxotics experience. Cambridge Kitchens Mfg —Custom Designs from Concept to Completion By LINDA TAGLIAFERRO

More than ever, the kitchen is the heart of the home. Designing or remodeling this essential gathering and workspace entails more than merely planning an area to store and cook food. Ideally, the kitchen will be transformed into a showcase for the homeowner’s creativity and exude a feeling of warmth, elegance and flair. It should also function as a focal point for the preparation of culinary creations.

26 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

T

o this end, the hallmark of Cambridge Kitchens Mfg.’s success for the past 25 years has been their ability to transform a homeowner’s vision into a dream kitchen uniquely reflective of their home and lifestyle. From sleek designs with bold lines to traditional offerings, the possibilities for custom high-end kitchens abound. Perhaps what most sets Cambridge Kitchens Mfg. apart from the competition is that all their cabinetry is designed and crafted on site in a 35,000-square foot factory adjoining their Hicksville showroom. This ensures the utmost control over each step of the process and provides a quick turnaround. “We can manufacture and install a custom kitchen in a maximum timeframe of three to four weeks because everything is here,” explains owner Nick Vassi. Clients initially meet with an in-house designer. Their wishes for style, colors, specific types of wood and architectural elements are virtually granted on a wide screen with detailed computer-generated renderings of the final product. “This is a very expensive technology,” says Nick. “It shows the client exactly what the finished kitchen will look like even before its production.” Colors and styles can easily be digitally tweaked, helping clients confidently decide exactly what they want. In the factory, state-of-the-art woodworking machinery turns the computerized design into finely crafted cabinetry. The wood is cut to precise measurements, and even ornate curves can be created. The pieces are labeled and later assembled on the premises. Clients visit the factory to approve the final product before delivery and installation.

“Long Islanders today generally are looking for traditional designs in their kitchens,” Nick explains. That, however, doesn’t imply a cookie-cutter look. Traditional designs may be expressed in a variety of hardwoods, styles, and finishes to provide a one-of-a-kind result. Among the hardwoods are deep-toned mahogany, walnut and maple. Door styles range from understated Shaker style to a more ornate look with applied moldings that add to the depth of the design. Decorative inserts and overlays such as graceful acanthus leaves are available on cabinet doors. The sinuous curves of impressive crown moldings and distinctive fluted columns emphasize and embellish designs. Finishing the wood to enhance its natural grain and add to its durability is a long, labor-intensive process. Acrylic materials impart a waterproof scratch resistant finish for longevity and easy maintenance. Workers sand the wood, painstakingly apply a clear stain followed by a base color. Seeking a perfect match to client samples, colors are custom-mixed at the factory. After a sealer is applied, the wood is sanded again. A colored glaze covers the intricate designs often featured in the cabinetry. Finally, a top coat affords a protective finish. For an average job, this process must be repeated on literally several hundred pieces. To complement their clients’ cabinetry, Cambridge also sells top-of-the-line appliances such as Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Franke and other high-end brands. These can be seamlessly integrated into the planned kitchen design. SE Cambridge Kitchens Mfg. is located at 280 Duffy Avenue in Hicksville, NY. LOCAL LIFE

A Day in…Locust Valley Tranquil, Charming and Upscale During the turn of the twentieth century and throughout the Gatsby era, sprawling estates sprang up against the backdrop of the rolling hills of Locust Valley. Although some of these have since been transformed into public spaces, the area’s past elegance pervades its present, and continues to attract those seeking an upscale ambiance coupled with a comfortable, small town feel. 30 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

By LINDA TAGLIAFERRO

“D

espite change and the passing of the years, Locust Valley is still the most desirable and beautiful area of the North Shore and the little hamlet at the depot remains the hub and the heart of the larger community,” said Herb Schierhorst, the president of the Locust Valley Historical Society. “ We are a garden flourishing in rich soil sown and nurtured by our founders who valued education, beauty and civic pride” and a “unique juxtaposition of history and modern community.” Located in the midst of Long Island’s fabled Gold Coast, this North Shore hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay encompasses a small area, but when referring to “Locust Valley,” most Long Islanders include surrounding areas like Matinecock, Mill Neck and Lattingtown. This was originally the land of the Matinecock Indians, but in the 1600s, Europeans –mostly from England- settled here and called the area Buckram. In the mid-1800s, the name was changed to Locust Valley with a nod to the stately trees thriving in the hamlet’s woodlands. Carl Knight of Knight & Co, a home furnishings and interior design company that his father established in Locust Valley over 50 years ago, describes the area as “a special place to live. It’s New York without being New York. It’s close to Manhattan and yet country-like, quiet and calm.” The Long Island Rail Road takes residents from the picturesque local station into the bustling streets of Manhattan in a little over an hour. Kathy Smith, director of the Locust Valley Library, commented: “Some residents also own homes in Manhattan and come here for a break or peaceful weekend.” The library building dates from 1909 and has had multiple identities. “It was once a community center, then a fire department, a bowling alley, a theater, and finally a library,” Ms. Smith explained. “It was a wellused building. It still is.” Educational resources in the hamlet are plentiful. The Locust Valley Central School District includes the Ann MacArthur Primary School, the Locust Valley Intermediate School and Locust Valley High School. There are also two private schools: Friends Academy, founded in 1876, and the Portledge School, established in 1965 on the grounds of the former Alice S. Coffin estate. There are no mega-malls in this tranquil territory.

Rather, an understated but colorful main street, Forest Avenue, and its cross street, Birch Hill Road, feature numerous quaint boutiques, including some pleasant surprises. Curds & Whey opened in July 2012 on Birch Hill Road and abounds in local culinary delights including artisanal cheeses from Mecox Bay Dairy in Bridgehampton, fresh breads from Blue Duck Bakery in Southampton and Maroni’s meatballs from Northport. Don’t leave without purchasing a Locust Valley chocolate bar, handmade by Mali B. Sweets of Greenport. To thoroughly satisfy your sweet tooth, amble over to Chocolicious on Birch Hill Road, where distinctive chocolates, truffles and other delights are handmade on the premises. A hidden gem on Birch Hill Road is Worth Repeating, a decidedly upscale consignment shop featuring gently used, discounted designer brands including Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Manolo Blahnik and many others. “They’re priced to sell,” comments owner Betsy Gibbs, “sometimes 50 percent off retail.” Eateries in Locust Valley include Buckram Stables Café on Forest Avenue, which offers burgers, omelets and other casual American cuisine against the backdrop of a cozy, equestrian-themed setting. The quintessential Locust Valley restaurant is the Basil Leaf Café Ristorante on Birch Hill Road (in The Plaza Boutiques shopping area.) In this romantic, upscale setting, mouthwatering Italian favorites include a wide variety of homemade pastas, pizzas and more. In addition to unique shopping opportunities and culinary gems, natural wonders abound. The John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden blends Asian and American plants, well-placed stones, bamboo groves and graceful, winding gravel paths in its serene, fouracre setting. Although a cemetery might not seem the most upbeat place to spend time, the Locust Valley Cemetery, listed on the Smithsonian Register of American Gardens, is worth a visit. “It’s more like an arboretum,” says Bill Simons, the cemetery’s general manager. Visitors often come to the serene setting to sit on a bench and read, and the profusion of plants attracts birds. “The Audubon Society has come here for that reason.” With 30 acres of gently winding paths and impressive rhododendrons that burst into a vision of purple in May, the cemetery was designed by the sons of Fred-

erick Law Olmsted, noted for his landscape designs of Central Park and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Locust Valley is also home to exclusive country clubs. The Creek Club, founded in 1923 by elite locals including J. Pierpont Morgan, Jr., features tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course designed by Seth Raynor and Charles B. MacDonald, known as the “Father of Golf Architecture.” If you’re thinking of joining, leave your cell phone off because the club strictly prohibits talking, texting and e-mailing on the property except in designated areas. The Piping Rock Club also has a no-cell phone policy. Founded in 1911, the venue’s clubhouse was designed by Guy Lowell, acclaimed for his designs of the New York State Supreme Court Building and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In the early twentieth century, the club played host to the Piping Rock Horse Show. A Charles B. MacDonald 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and beach facilities are also available to the country club’s members. With a tranquil ambiance, historic buildings, unique shopping and excellent restaurants, there is much to admire about Locust Valley. Librarian director Ms. Smith sums it up: “The setting is beautiful, there’s a charming downtown, the schools are very good, and there are beaches close by.” SE

NORTH SHORE BEACHES

JEWELS of the GOLD COAST —RELAX on the NORTH SHORE’S BEST BEACHES

Okay, so there aren’t any leafy palms rustling in the breeze, the golden sand isn’t quite powdery and the waters aren’t exactly azure blue. But the Long Island Sound shimmers in the sunlight as the waves lap calmly against the shore. After all, the charm of the North Shore’s beaches rests in the laid back atmosphere that prevails everywhere, the lack of crowds, and the easy accessibility for swimming, sailing, kayaking and motor boating. On shore, the beaches are great spots for soaking up the sun, strolling, picnicking, relaxing, and at some parks, shooting hoops. The North Shore Beaches are so close to home, you can spend a day or just a few hours working on your tan or plying the waters in your kayak with nary a worry about fighting traffic on the way home. Just don’t forget the sunscreen. Here are a few of our favorites: Asharoken Beach, one of three beaches in the Northport area, stretches 535 feet along Northport Bay. A boat ramp provides access for small boats, kayaking, canoeing, motor boating and sailing. Through early September, lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., though the beach closes at 8 p.m. Restrooms, outdoor showers and first-aid stations are available. As with most North Shore beaches, seasonal and daily passes are available for residents at a discount and to non-residents at a slightly higher fee. Beaches on both Oyster Bay Harbor and the Long Island Sound are accessible via an underground pathway at Centre Island Beach on Bayville Avenue on the east end of Bayville, just before the entrance to Centre Island. On the Sound side, the beach stretches 650 feet along the waterfront. The crescent-shaped harbor side, where grasses poke through the sand when the tide is out, is well-suited to

32 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

families with young children frolicking at the water’s edge, though jellies or water shoes are recommended. Swimming is available on both sides. Bathroom facilities are available on site. The beach is open to Oyster Bay residents by the carload at a discounted price; non-residents are welcome for a higher fee. The Charles Ransom Beach at the western end of Bayville has playground and other beach facilities along the sandy shore. Just across the road is the Bayville Boardwalk, where the pirate-themed Bayville Amusement Park, restaurants, an ice cream parlor and other refreshments can be found. Perfect for families, at Crab Meadow Park on Waterside Avenue in Northport, a spot for your blanket and chairs on the 1,000 foot wide Huntington town beach is a quick stroll from the parking lot. A large, partly shaded playground has see-saws, swings, slides and a jungle-gym and basketball courts. Pools of water formed by sandbars are shallow enough for children to collect sea shells off the bottom. Fishing, canoeing and kayaking are permitted. On the boardwalk, La Casa Cafe offers pizza and Italian ices with room to enjoy snacks on the veranda as well as an indoor restaurant. And for the gourmet chefs among us, beach pavilions are equipped with grills for barbecuing. In Eatons Neck, Hobart Beach Park, known locally as “Sand City,” offers a great stretch of beach for sunbathing or playing beach volleyball between Northport Bay and the Long Island Sound with the Sarah H. Rupert Water Bird Park Preserve at the far end. The playground at this Huntington town beach has a jungle gym, swings, slides, and a basketball court, picnic areas, rest rooms, outdoor

showers, motor boating, water skiing and sailing. Boats can dock and fishermen unload their catch on the boat ramp. The piping plovers and other birds can be viewed from afar but the Sarah H. Rupert Water Bird Park Preserve at the far end of the park is not open to visitors. Though Hobart Beach lacks a concession stand, an ice cream truck frequently stops by. The lush 40-acre Morgan Memorial Park Beach on Germain Street in Glen Cove stretches 350 feet at the mouth of Hempstead Harbor overlooking the Long Island Sound. Besides the bathing beach, the hilly, tree-shaded park has a picnic area and hiking paths along the bluffs overlooking the harbor. It is also the site of summer concerts. The park was once the site of a steamboat landing. The financier J.P. Morgan hired top landscape architects to design the park in memory of his late wife. The former Bar Beach was combined with the neighboring Hempstead Harbor Park on West Shore Road in Port Washington to create the 60-acre North Hempstead Beach Park. The combined North Hempstead town park provides a half mile-long sandy beach and recreational activities, including a waterfront promenade, a fishing pier, boat ramp, bathhouse and concession area. There are basketball and shuffleboard courts, a playground, horseshoe pits, handball, paddleball, a mile jogging course, picnic areas with barbecues and shelter pavilions. Several concerts and festivals are held at the park each summer. Permits are required for use of the fields and picnic area and parking fees apply year-round. On the Boulevard in Sea Cliff, the Sea Cliff Municipal Beach offers paid daily or seasonal memberships for residents and non-residents. It offers a sandy strip on Hempstead Harbor, a pavilion with restrooms, first-aid and shower facilities. Refreshments are also available. Swimming and life-saving classes for village children are offered by the Red Cross-certified lifeguards. Boat racks for Sunfish, Sailfish and other small boats are available. Evenings, concerts are held at the beach. The Town of Oyster Bay owns and operates Harry Tappen Beach on Shore Road in Sea Cliff. An outdoor pool, swings, refreshment stands and a shaded picnic area with a playground are among the facilities. Adjacent to each is a public marina. The town maintains a boat basin with launching ramps. Though it doesn’t have a swimming beach, Steppingstone Park on Steppingstone Lane in Kings Point overlooks the Long Island Sound. Open to residents of the Great Neck Park District with a park card, and their guests, this lovely park is home to a marina with mooring facilities, a boat launching ramp, sailing lessons, a fishing dock, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a children’s party room, a refreshment stand, picnic tables, a wading pool, an animalthemed sprinkler aqua park and rest rooms. As the sun sets on Saturday and Sunday evenings, the park is the site of the Steppingstone Waterfront Theatre offering concerts and other live entertainment. SE

H.L. Gross & Bro. Jewelers A GARDEN CITY LANDMARK CROSSES THE STREET By CARA S. TRAGER The sleek, new retail space sparkles. Against white walls and white crystallized glass floor tiles, illuminated display cases, framed in dark wood, shimmer with diamonds. Statement-making engagement rings and necklaces dripping with carats abound. The contemporary appearance belies the jewelry firm’s age —103 years old, a rarity in a retail industry where single-shop operations face ever-stiff competition from chain stores and bauble-hawking websites. Yet, H.L. Gross & Bro. Jewelers, a landmark on Garden City’s Franklin Avenue since 1969 and the owner of the shop, has done more than survive. It is thriving, as evidenced by its stunning new digs —a 5,500-square foot shop that replaces its longtime 3,000-square-foot store. The new venue —across the street from its previous location —represents an investment of more than $1 million in design and construction costs. The 20-employee firm not only needed more room to display and sell its precious pieces but to conduct back-office operations. The old quarters were also due for a facelift. Fortuitously, the stars were aligned: the new space became available for lease. And like much of what the emporium sells, its new Franklin Avenue address represents a gift —of sorts. It is from Michael Gross, the firm’s president and the fourth-generation in the family business, to his sons, Brad, 34, and Matt, 32, both vice presidents in the company their great-greatgrandfather started in downtown Brooklyn. “I want to leave them something special,” said Michael Gross, 64. “If my sons weren’t in the business, I would be looking to retire.” He takes particular joy in knowing that his sons are continuing in a business that has been so much a part of the family’s life. In fact, when Michael’s octogenarian mother entered the new place for the first time, she said, “ ‘If only your father could see this.’ ” A Rolex watch and a Tacori bridal jewelry boutique serve as anchors within the shop, which also features the creations of more than 15 other bridal designers, including Verragio, Simon G., Henri Daussi, Jeff Cooper and Scott Kay. “In the last 10 years, branded rings have become very popular,” said Brad, who has expanded the firm’s bridal jewelry selection while Matt concentrates on buying and selling new, vintage and collectible watch-

es. Their father, who manages day-to-day operations, specializes in estate pieces, and their mother, Diane, focuses on fashion jewelry. The store is also outfitted with a flat-screen TV for viewing football and baseball games and a marble counter where cappuccino, espresso, beer and snacks are served. A wine cooler provides for chilled varietals in stemware. On Saturdays, customers are greeted with mimosas. “They wanted to make the area different from the

rest of the space and inviting to a palate,” said Laura Reddy, the store’s interior designer and the president of NY3 Design Group, Inc. in Manhattan The chill-out area also helps differentiate H.L. Gross, a must-do in a competitive retail market. “It makes the store more personable,” said Michael, who credits his sons with helping the firm stay fresh and exciting. Matt, for example, has helped bolster the firm’s bottom line with his expertise in watches. He first became interested in important time pieces as a high school student, learning the ropes by handling the sale of customers’ trade-ins. According to Brad, his brother’s homespun experience — as well as salesmanship — landed him a full-time job at Cartier in Scottsdale, Arizona and starting with his first month of employment, Matt, then 19, sold more watches than all the sales staff combined. Plus, he was the youngest sales person. For more than a decade, Matt has been traveling to domestic and international trade shows and auctions to buy and sell classic time pieces. “New blood brings in new ideas and that’s what has

brought us forward,” said Michael who, courtesy of his own engineering background — he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute — pioneered the firm’s website development 15 years ago when the Internet was still in its formative years as a marketing tool. And according to Serge Fischler, the president of a diamond manufacturer and wholesaler in New York that bears his name, it’s the Internet — more than retail chains — that poses the biggest threat to small, independent jewelry shops. All too often, consumers use mom-and-pop shops to learn about diamonds but turn to the web for their purchases. “Spending time costs money,” said Fischler. Still, small jewelry businesses have their own advantages. They don’t need to accumulate an inventory of same-carat and samequality diamonds for each store, a challenging effort because diamonds are “cut from what the earth gives you,” Fischler said. “They are not a manmade product.” For its part, H.L. Gross is content to stay the course as a single-unit operation. As Michael tells it, multiple stores add to overhead, thin out inventory and pose security and operating challenges. “People also like to deal with the owner,” he said. Renee Worrall, a Syosset resident who grew up in Garden City, is among customers drawn to the shop’s family atmosphere. On a recent spring day, as she was admiring the new store and perusing its glistening inventory, Worrall said that she and her husband had purchased their wedding rings at H.L. Gross 27 years ago. Through the years, they have returned for important pieces of jewelry. “We come here because of the quality,” said Worrall, adding, “I like the personal touch.” SE .

TRAVEL: HOT SPOTS

home & away VACATION RENTALS PROVIDE a UNIQUE ALTERNATIVE to HOTELS By M. C. SUSSMAN Headed for Paris, the Amalfi Coast or Bali? Tired of the cramped hotel room routine? For a different, more homey experience, rent a spacious home or condominium instead for a night, a week or a month. You’ll feel like a native, not a tourist. An apartment in London, perhaps? It’s not quite Buckingham Palace but you could rent a three bedroom place in Albert Hall Mansions, a sumptuous and imposing 1879 building in Knightsbridge, for about $2046 a night. Corinthian pillars, stained glass, parquet floors and chandeliers grace the hallway, and both reception rooms have terraces facing Hyde Park. According to OneFineStay.com, even “Queen Victoria would approve” of this “unhotel.” http://www.onefinestay.com/london/albert-hallmansions/description/ Vacation rentals combine the excitement of travel with the comforts of home, such as extra space, privacy and fully outfitted kitchens. On websites like homeaway.com and airbnb.com you can search, albeit at a wide range of prices and accommodations, for a single room in someone’s home or a mansion with a private chef and concierge service. Start combing the listings for that perfect villa in Tuscany, an apartment in Paris or seaside home on the Aegean sea. (On the flip side, as they do in the Hamptons, you might want to consider renting out your own home for a long weekend, a month or the summer and apply the bounty to your own vacation.) Baer Tierkel, CEO of Otalo.com, a vacation rental search engine, said “thousands of websites” advertising vacation rentals have sprouted up in the last few years. Much of the surge in vacation rentals “stems from the Baby Boomer generation using their second homes less and less as that generation ages. But rather than selling their vacation homes, as in many cases they would like to leave them to their children, they are renting them out when not in use.” Additionally, Baer said, “there has been a boon of successful entrepreneurs who want access to a luxury retreat” but don’t use it all the time. “The

Internet has made it easy for them to make their retreat available to others and make owning a retreat much more affordable.” Otalo.com lists 1.8 million vacation rentals from dozens of vacation rental websites, including a houseboat in a residential area in the heart of the old city in Amsterdam, and a two minute walk from Nieuwmarkt square with its bars and restaurants. The houseboat, for 2 or 3, has a living area with a built in kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom with a king-sized bed. The Sounds of Summer

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy,” go the jazzy lyrics to George Gershwin’s 1935 aria for the opera “Porgy and Bess.” And at Long Island’s parks, beaches and more formal music venues, the languid days and steamy nights are filled with the sounds of music from classic and pops to folk and rock. At the seaside amphitheater known as Nikon at Jones Theater, a perennial favorite operated by Live Nation, headliners include Fleetwood Mac Live on June 22 at 8 p.m.; the Dave Matthews Band on June 25 and 26 at 7 p.m.; and Phish on July 12 at 7:30 p.m. At the Paramount Theater in Huntington, Peter Frampton appears in concert on June 23rd at 8 p.m. Rick Springfield takes the stage on July 13 at 8 p.m. and on August 27, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo perform at 8 p.m. You might start humming “Puff the Magic Dragon,” in anticipation of the Peter and Paul concert (though sadly without the late Mary of the 1960s hit trio) on June 14 at 8 p.m. at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Don McClean and Judy Collins will appear on the round stage on July 13 at 8 p.m. Summer concerts in the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Music Under The Stars” series at various town parks are free. Just bring a lawn chair or a blanket to John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa to hear the musical sensation “America” perform hits like “A Horse with No Name,” and “Tin Man.”

At Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay on Wednesday, July 11, at 8 p.m. enjoy Rick Larrimore’s Ultimate Tribute to Rod Stewart with hits like “Maggie May” and “Have I Told You Lately.” Fans of the Bee Gees can hear blockbusters such as “How Deep Is Your Love,” and “Night Fever,” by the tribute band Stayin’ Alive at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park on July 13. On a different note, concert goers can spend the evening of July 14 listening to Broadway show tunes, television theme songs and light classical music performed by the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra at PlainviewOld Bethpage Community Park in Plainview. Free concerts are held on Friday nights at 7:30 at the Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park, starting with Just Sixties on July 12. The evening includes 28 songs of the 1960s played by the band, interspersed with brief explanations of the culture, fads, celebrities and news of that era. The following Friday, July 19, the oldies group Randy and the Rainbows will be playing their hit number, “Denise, Denise,” and other songs of their day. Sunday afternoons at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington are dancing and singing as well as sunbathing and swimming. Shows start at 1 p.m. beginning July 7 with the high energy band, Stages. On July 21, the band Simply the Best pays

tribute to The Supremes with songs like “Stop In the Name of Love” and “Baby Love.” On July 28, the theme switches to country with the Time Gillis Country Band. At Morgan Park on the waterfront in Glen Cove, free summer concerts are held on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. starting with the North Shore Pops Concert Band on July 7 and a Young Performers Concert presenting winners of an annual talent competition followed by A Gala of Arias and show tunes performed by bass-soloist Peter Maravell. Bring a blanket and a snack to a production of The Sound of Music on July 21, the Beach Boys tribute by the Driftwoods on July 28 and a tribute to Barbra Streisand performed by Sharon Owens and band on Aug. 18, 2013. A tribute to Neil Diamond performed by Read Diamond wraps up the series on Aug. 25. In case of rain, the shows go on at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall on Pearsall Avenue in Glen Cove. SE –M.C. SUSSMAN

PUTTER ANALYZER WATER CHARGE Headed to the Himalyas or the Outback this summer? No need to worry when you travel, your mobile battery dies and you don’t have access to regular battery sources or sunlight. The new Powertrekk fuel cell charger, expected to hit the market this season for about $200, only needs H20 to get you back online. Using fuel cell technology, water added to the fuel pack device extracts the hydrogen to charge a small battery. The electricity is stored in the storage buffer allowing the device to function both as a battery and as a charger.

Want to develop a consistent and reliable putting stroke? For golfers, the 3BaysGSA Putt helps you understand your putting stroke by plugging into a putter grip and analyzing your golf motion. Smaller than a golf ball and weighing less than a third of an ounce, it is touted to be the “World’s Lightest Putting Analyzer.” Using delicate 9-axis motion sensors and intelligent algorithms, it can closely analyze key aspects of your putting stroke. Feedback is instant via a Bluetooth connection on your mobile device. It may be a game-changer. http://www.v1golf.com/products/3bays-gsa.asp

BRAINY BRACELETS Your every motion, day and night, is now recorded on your wrist. Functional wristbands like Jawbone Up are the new smart bracelets, a wristband /app combo with motion-sensing technology that tracks micro-movements of your wrist to detail how long it takes you to fall asleep, how long you were in bed and how many times you woke up during the night. The splash-proof computer bracelet also monitors your active versus idle time during the day, including the number of steps you take and how far you walk… or not. It vibrates gently to remind you to get up and move when you’ve been inactive and records what you snitch from the cookie cupboard. Then Jawbone Up analyzes your data, compares you to others, and cooly provides information tailored to you.

LUGGAGE FOUND Nervous about losing your luggage on your next flight or layover? Placed in your checked luggage, a new pintsized device called Trakdot is designed to keep track of your suitcase when you travel. It reports its location to any mobile phone via email or text. If you land in San Diego and your luggage doesn’t, you can easily pinpoint where it went astray, hopefully making it easier to retrieve. Even if your bag isn’t lost, another app signals when your suitcase is approaching on the baggage carousel. Trakdot.com

A STUNNING FRENCH CHATEAU WITH A REGAL AIR By M.C. SUSSMAN

It’s not often you find a piece of the Loire Valley on Long Island’s shores. A new French Chateau, completed this year on two acres in Sands Point, is a stunning exception. This 12,000 square foot stucco European villa with a cement limestone finish is a wow from the moment you pull up the driveway to the courtyard. Italian sandstone balustrades lead to the entry porch. The arched Italian hand forged wrought iron and glass double front doors hint at the opulence within. The 30-foot entry foyer, with its ornate domed 46-foot high ceiling, raised paneling and inset antique mirrors, is a jaw dropper. The creamy marble floor is laid in 36 by 36-inch slabs with an oval center medallion and a matching grand marble staircase to the upper and lower levels. An ornate plaster rosette frieze decorates the wraparound balcony with wrought iron railing topped with a mahogany banister. To one side is a palatial 1500 square foot ballroom with a trio of lavish crystal chandeliers suspended from the 30-foot ceiling with a curve of basket-weave moldings and columns of Emperador marble. The floor to ceiling travertine fireplace, copied from an Italian castle, was hand-carved with lion’s heads and lush flowers. 44 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

Hand-carved glass doors with Lalique-like handles lead to a five-star hotel-worthy powder room with rear lit green onyx on the walls and floor, a vanity with two sinks and a coffered ceiling with plaster rosette medallions. Each of the bathrooms are “works of art” with custom mosaic designs and marble finishes. The banquet-sized dining room and a cozy library have 12-foot ceilings and their own travertine fireplaces. he monumental sized kitchen has two 10-foot granite-topped center islands, a Wolf stove with nine burners and two grills, a bar, two dishwashers, two refrigerators plus an under counter refrigerator for cold drinks and a wine cooler. A separate butler’s pantry has matching Brazilian Bordeaux granite. There is a second powder room off the kitchen. The kitchen opens on to a family room with large arched windows and access to the backyard. Upstairs the commodious master suite has a hand carved travertine fireplace, a balcony and a boutique-sized his and hers closet and basket-weave moldings on the tray ceiling. A copper dome tops a master bath fit for a Trump hotel, with six arched and additional porthole windows above the Jacuzzi, enhanced with cove lighting in

the dome. The spa bath also boasts twin vanities with gold plated faucets. His and hers steam showers have glistening mosaic tile walls bursting with flowers. Opulent etched glass enhances the his and hers water closets. The lower level is a high-style playhouse of its own, with an “azul sky book matched marble floor from Saudi Arabia and 12 and a half foot ceilings. Amenities include a game room and a large home theater, a couples massage room, a sauna and lounge, a wine cellar with glass fabric walls and black mosaic glass tile in the cabana bathroom. The resort-style backyard features a 50 by 22-ft salt water pool with an intricate mosaic tile floor and walls, a spill over spa, LED lighting, fountains and 3000 square feet of patio on two levels. The home is outfitted with European tilt and turn mahogany windows, marble base moldings, 22 zones of radiant heat with individual controls in each room, surround sound, a Lutron lighting system and a four car garage with mahogany doors and room for lifts. Take the touch of class of the long island gold coast, put a dose of a painstakingly multi-million dollar, total interior/exterior restoration for over 4 years to include the highest museum quality craftsmanship & extensive artistic gold leaf painting & ceiling friscos throughout, a must see to appreciate. All original restored French doors and hardware. This estate, known as “Thornwood”, is a magical place. It reflects the elegance and style of a chateaux of the French Renaissance. It was built in 1929 and designed by noted architect Bradley Delehanty and is featured in the Gold Coast history books. This fortress contains a large master suite with an oversized onyx bathroom, 7 bedrooms, all with full baths completely refit , all fully tiled floor to ceiling and refit with all new high end fixtures and 4 half baths. High end state of the art hand finished gourmet kitchen with all new high end appliances, it also has a circular full service butler’s pantry leading to a formal dining room to accommodate large family celebrations, an exquisite bar area off the dining room and a paneled library restored to perfection, not to mention the large “famous” ballroom which can comfortably fit over 100 people. An exterior Tuscan screened porch, Koi pond, a Tuscan ranch pagola, as seen in French and Italian villas. A super laundry room with 2 stackable washers and 2 stackable dryers with built in cabinetry. Telephone, intercom, stereo touch pad systems throughout living area and each room. Exterior – all new drainage system to include 4 new drywells, waterproofing of entire foundation to its footings. New 2,000 gallon oil tank, 1,000 gallon propane tank. New 800 amp electric service, to include 400 amp 65kw general propane generator. COMEDY on TAP at CCFA FUNDRAISER By M.C. SUSSMAN

The chronic digestive diseases Crohn’s & Colitis are nothing to chuckle about. But at “Laugh ‘Til It Stops Hurting,” the Spring event and a fundraiser for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s Long Island Chapter, laughter was certainly the best medicine. The more than 200 donors who attended the “mission critical event” at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury received a dose of first rate humor. The star-studded evening, attended by bestselling author Nelson DeMille, began with a sumptuous Strolling Dinner party with a Scotch tasting, an open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres including mini hamburger and cheeseburgers sliders, tuna sashimi, pigs in blankets and potato pancakes along with stations where sushi, carved turkey and roast beef, pasta and risotto, duck wraps, crudite and calamari were served. Headlining the entertainment was Paul Reiser, the seasoned actor, writer, musician and stand-up comedian who appeared in such films as “Diner,” “Beverly Hills Cop” (I and II) and “The Thing About My Folks,” and won an Emmy and Golden Globe for his starring role in the NBC television comedy series, “Mad About You.” In his routine Reiser poked fun at himself, recalling how he looked in the mirror and suddenly realized he was aging. He joshed about his two sons, and got laughs for his riff on his wife’s obsession with playing “Words with Friends” and “Angry Birds” games on her smart phone.

With local stand-up comic Rob Bartlett as the master of ceremonies, honors went to ‘Man of the Year’ Stuart Lubow, a founder of and chairman, president and CEO of Community National Bank. Alix Della Penna, 16, who has suffered from ulcerative colitis since age 7, received the Children’s Legacy Award. In 2010 Alix ran the Las Vegas half marathon, raising nearly $9000 to help find a cure for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of American raises funds for research and education about the life-changing and sometimes life-threatening digestive diseases. Chapter president Mitchell A. Carron, Spring Event chairman David Honigstock, and National CCFA president and CEO Rick Geswell also greeted the crowd. A silent auction included Judith Ripka baubles, sports memorabilia and a shopping spree at the Americana Manhasset. Among the highlights of a live auction were four tickets to ‘The Lion King’ including a limousine service and a backstage tour, a dinner for eight at Rao’s restaurant and swimming lessons with Olympic Gold medalist Ryan Lochte. Afterwards, a luscious dessert buffet included make your own sundaes, molten chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, creme brûlée, lemon chiffon pie, and sugar free cheesecake. The perfect way to end a fun evening with a smile. SE

Sit at the tiki bar or on the patio, sip a Soundview Sunset (vodka, Chambord, cranberry juice and pineapple juice) and for starters, enjoy stuffed figs with goat cheese and almonds or fish tacos with pineapple salsa. Grilled mahi mahi and tilapia piccata are among the entrees.

PRIME RESTAURANT 117 New York Avenue Huntington (631) 385-1515 restaurantprime.com “Sittin’ on the dock of the bay,” goes the Otis Redding song. You might want to hum it while sitting on the dockside terrace at Prime, the swank Huntington restaurant on Huntington Harbor and a premier destination restaurant for boaters that also includes a boardwalk, a Cabana Bar and Prime’s Floating Dock. The separate, more casual, dockside menu features a raw bar with little necks, oysters, king crab legs and Sushi rolls include the Montauk Roll -- a spicy tuna roll with tempura crunch topped with lobster. Among the salad choices are cobb, beet and spinach. Sandwiches winners include curried chicken salad with grape chutney or lump crab salad sandwich, both served with chips. For grill lovers, “black label” burgers, chicken and sirloin skewers, Atlantic salmon, and filet mignon can’t be beat. While you dine, a full time dock master tends the more than 300-feet of dock space. LOUIE’S OYSTER BAR & GRILLE 395 Main St. Port Washington (516) 883-4242 When Louie’s first opened its doors in 1905, the only way to get there was by boat. It was built on a floating barge anchored in Manhasset Bay. These days, you can tie up your watercraft by the dock, or you can use the front door, pass through the dining rooms to the open air deck to sip a cocktail, nibble on a shrimp BLT slider or a seared tuna flatbread, hobnob with the North Shore crowd or stroll out to the gazebo for a quiet moment. Under the awning on the veranda, dine on sweet oysters on the half shell, tender seafood salad, steamers, or thick and flakey broiled scrod as you enjoy the view or watch the sunset. 74 SHAWN ELLIOTT LUXURY

THE GOOD LIFE

SAFE SUN FUN B Y PAU L A G A N Z I L I C ATA

I’m a virgin. I’m planting my very first vegetable garden this summer. It’s one of many outdoor activities I’m enjoying, while practicing safe sun. It’s not just me who is seeing the world through UV-protected lenses. Celebrities seem to be segueing from a savage tan to taming the sun. Whenever I see a photo of Angelina Jolie outside, she’s wearing a fabulous floppy hat, protecting her lovely fair skin. Madonna knows that fair is in vogue. Even Jennifer Lopez, known for her epidermal glow, is L’Oreal’s spokesperson for its new line of sunscreen, Sublime Sun. The color of JLo’s dewy radiance today pales compared to the Bain de Soleil girl of yesteryear. One just needs to see a picture of the Tanning Mom – a toastedfaced, New Jersey woman who was brought up on charges for taking her five-year old daughter into a tanning booth with her – to see how unattractive a deep dark tan can be. But I grew up in the 70s, during an era when the goal of every teenage girl was a tan, courtesy of a good bake on the beach. My girlfriends fried to a golden brown: heads angled up toward the sun, a reflector beneath the chin, bronzed bodies all in a row

glistening in baby oil…and pale Paula. How many summers did I suffer through shouts of ‘Yo, Milk!’? I could almost hear my skin sizzling under the hot sun, only to burn and peel. Eventually, I gave up and simply stayed out of the sun as diligently as a Twilight vampire. I started coming out of the shade years later when we bought our house and I discovered gardening. Initially, I chose to block out ultraviolet rays with my outfit, preferring clothing’s cotton to sunscreen’s chemicals. In stark contrast to my neighbor who gardens barefoot, wearing only shorts and a halter top, I’d be dressed in baggy jeans, an oversized sweatshirt and a big straw hat. But who cared what I looked like, Mother Nature was having her way with me. It happened gradually, similar to the way my azalea bush colors from green to fuchsia in early spring. I was outside…and loving it. Kneeling in my flowerbeds planting impatiens, hovering over hydrangea bushes carefully pruning, spending hours watering and weeding. It was simultaneously relaxing and exhilarating watching the blooms grow. Eventually I shed some clothes, segued to SPFs... and showed some skin. Why? I became a widow and entered the dating scene after a twenty-five year absence. Skin was essential. After months of dating, I met someone. I suspected I was falling, but when I found myself sitting on the beach with him, I knew I’d fallen in love. “Are you OK?” Billy kept asking during that first beach date, trying to gauge my comfort level. With the umbrella firmly in place, I was guaranteed shade, Billy adjusting the angle as the sun crossed the sky. When we took a walk along the shore, I wore nothing but SPF 30 on whatever areas my bikini didn’t cover, and a baseball cap. When we played ball by the ocean, I tossed the hat. There was nothing between the sun and me except Neutrogena sunscreen. We spent the whole day at the beach – playing backgammon, walking, people-watching. And those waves! There had been warnings about the surf. I don’t remember any point in the water when I wasn’t laughing with delight, the waves high and frequent. At one point – with the sun on my face, the sound of the surf, the squeals of other bathers bobbing up and down in the waves – I realized I’d become one of the sun’n’fun bunch. The beach became one of our rituals. “I can still hear your laughter riding the waves!” Billy often says about that first beach date. Now a regular at the beach, I can’t help but compare the sun gear of yesteryear and today. There are more umbrellas, children are constantly coated in sun block, and there are as many baby tents and canopies as there are seashells. Adults spray on sunscreen or slather on tanning lotions, baby oil is history, the letters SPF have become part of the beach scene. And I love the sun ‘n fun fashions. At a Florida resort on a recent vacation, I couldn’t help but notice all the sexy ‘cover-ups’ – clearly a misnomer. A sheer black embroidered tunic; a pink tasseled pareo wrap triangle cover-up tied loosely around the waist; a transparent short sarong wrap, a crocheted sleeveless mini dress. When I was a kid, cover-ups covered – they were white terry cloth, as thick as a towel and had sleeves. My favorite was a white terry cloth cape, the bottom scalloped like bat wings, with little bat ears on the hood. Coming-out of the shade has been fun. There have been hiking trails, biking trips – even camping. And all along, I’ve practiced safe sun. I let sunscreen work its magic – everywhere, every time. After all, I’m spending more time in the sun, especially in light of my vegetable patch. There’ll be über local produce this summer – homegrown eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, red-leaf lettuce, broccoli and peppers. When Billy and I designed the vegetable garden we had to make sure the plants would get enough sun so they would grow. Apparently the same is true for people; we all need sun to grow. SE
