The management conference earlier this year outlined our business strategy and direction of travel for the next five years. A number of organisational changes have been implemented to underpin the delivery of our short-, medium- and long-term goals.

It is safe to say that none of this can be achieved without the right vision, behaviours, and investment in our organisation and our people.

A series of initiatives has already been implemented in the last few months, designed to improve communication, define effective processes, and enhance personal skills and team capabilities across the business, some of which are highlighted in this edition of Insights.

I am incredibly encouraged by the shift change we are witnessing and would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your ongoing commitment.

Much has been said about Safety365 over the last year, and in particular the measures taken to instil behavioural change and attitude shift to preserve our personal safety and that of others.

Great strides have been taken and there is lots more to come.

Whilst taking personal responsibility for actions is paramount, teamwork is also fundamental to success, whether mobilising teams in support of crisis management, project development and implementation, or simply everyday customer service management.

This edition focuses on examples of best practice and teamwork, working together to exceed delivery expectations and set new performance standards.

It’s also great to see so many examples of our teams being active in the community. All across the group we have been engaging with local people, reaching out to worthwhile causes and most importantly, making a difference.

Six months ago, we introduced an initiative, Project Engage, designed to lead a culture shift in our business.

A large number of people across our functions and locations have been consulted over this time as part of the process to better understand the state of the nation and prioritise the target areas for review.

Defining the core values is a critical cornerstone to instigating and embedding change.

Values are enablers and need to be both business relevant and aligned to the delivery of our five-year business plan. Values are essentially what make us distinctive in our industry and sector, contributing to the overall success of our business by inspiring our people towards positive action. They also communicate what is important to everyone in our business and, importantly, our customers.

The business values will be shared and interpreted into meaningful examples by function, and will ultimately form part of the objectivesetting and appraisal system. This keeps our values live.

Developing our people Amanda Willis Group Head of HR

Significant investment has been made in our business over the last few years, underpinned by the investment in our people. Amanda Willis, Group Head of HR takes up the story of how we are investing to achieve our growth plans.

Across the business, we have supported our employees to grow, whether via an apprenticeship, a specific qualification relating to their area of business, a professional qualification, for example, the CIMA accountancy qualification, or an MBA. During September 2017, we also commenced an ambitious programme to enhance the skills of our current and future leaders via a leadership transformation programme. This is being run alongside a coaching programme, which will also support our employees with their own development.

Emma Wilson Digital Apprentice

Emma joined the Group Marketing team a year ago and has just completed Level 3 Digital Marketing Diploma at 3AAA. Despite having the choice to pursue a traditional route to academic achievement, Emma elected to take up an apprenticeship where she could learn and earn at the same time.

Emma said, “I have had an amazing time so far and enjoyed every minute of my time with the company. I have learnt the art of being responsible for social media platforms (content management, posting and reporting) and had exposure to high profile events and people which I would never have experienced otherwise. I have also had video production training and many of the films posted online have been created and edited by me.

I am really looking forward to continuing to learn and make a contribution to the business.”

Toyin Otubusin

Group Management Accountant Toyin is based in the Shared Financial Services Management Accounts Team and has recently completed his professional accountancy qualification, at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Toyin joined the business in 2015 as an Assistant Financial Analyst and has worked extremely hard to achieve this prestigious qualification.

Toyin said, “I am thrilled to have completed my professional studies and appreciative that Peel Ports has supported me through each stage of this qualification. Now the hard work begins and I look forward to the challenges it presents. I hope to add value by supporting Peel Ports in achieving its business objectives in whichever capacity I can.”

Andrew Grindley Interim Port Manager, Runcorn

Andy has recently completed his MBA in Industrial Management after three years of hard work and dedication.

This has been of great benefit to Andy in furthering his career with Peel Ports, including his new role working in Runcorn as Interim Port Manager. Andy explains how the MBA has helped him with his role at Peel Ports, “The MBA has given me the opportunity to develop myself and add value to the business. The challenges have been enjoyable and I look forward to the future opportunities for growth during this exciting time for Peel Ports.”

Daroll Hall

Maintenance Technician (Projects & Compliance) Daroll has recently completed his electrical apprenticeship in Clydeport and secured a role working in the newly created Electrical Projects & Compliance team. Since finalising his apprenticeship earlier this year Daroll has successfully completed his 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and is being put on a fixed wiring inspection course. Daroll is also being supported to progress and complete his HND. Daroll said “I’m looking forward to continuing my career at Peel Ports. We have lots to do and loads of electrical projects to be working on. I’m looking on this as a great opportunity to use the training I have had over the last four years.”

Developing our people

Russell Bird

Group Hydrographic and Dredging Manager Russell is one of 70 employees who have commenced the leadership transformation programme. The programme is designed to enhance the skills of our current and future managers and leaders within the business. Areas being covered include problem solving skills, time management, delegation, coaching, diversity and engagement.

Some of the skills being taught are the basics of building trust and effective working relationships, but which many of us forget to apply in day-to-day working life (and home life!), for example saying thank you and meaning it.

Russell explained “Peel Ports has grown to be the envy of the UK ports sector as an energetic, innovative and ambitious company.

We have numerous highly skilled people throughout the business, delivering outstanding projects and services, but following this trend means looking at how companies such as Google and Tesla invest in creating a holistic culture to drive them forward still.

The leadership training scheme has been excellent in changing the mindset of managers and supervisors. Implementing even a few ideas from the sessions has made a vast improvement to the environment in my team and others I have come into contact with.

It has also given me the opportunity to find out more about the people we work with every day, the range of backgrounds and experiences which, if harnessed, will help us all reach our full potential and hopefully the overall business goals and aspirations.�

Evan Reid

Apprentice Technician, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Evan is based in MTL, Dublin and joined in 2015 as an Apprentice Technician. Evan has recently completed his second year of a four-year apprenticeship in relation to Heavy Vehicle Mechanics. His overall result for his second year is a distinction, and so he is progressing well with his apprenticeship.

Paul Mason Electrical Team Leader

Paul is based in Medway and has recently completed further professional qualifications, with City & Guilds certifications in Low Voltage (LV) Authorised Person Commercial and High Voltage (HV) Authorised Person Commercial.

“These courses are important for my development and for me to further my role here at London Medway. The Maintenance Team I work within is investing heavily in electrical site safety rules, working closely with group colleagues to ensure common best practice; these qualifications are integral to this process.”

Tommie Ayling and Connor Town

Tommie Ayling and Connor Town have completed their final year apprenticeships in Mechanical NVQ & HNC at Peel Ports London Medway.

Tommie Ayling said “It feels great to have completed my apprenticeship and I can now look forward to further training to strengthen my career at Peel Ports Group.”

Connor Town said, “I am delighted to have completed my NVQ & HNC Engineering and look forward to upcoming training within the Group.”

Safety365

Ambitious targets are achievable if we learn together Patrick Walters Chief Operating Officer

Our aim to reduce lost-time incidents to zero over the next five years is ambitious but achievable.

After all, there is no greater priority than ensuring that our colleagues are safe. We launched our ‘Safety365’ campaign to ensure our staff are kept up to date with the latest health and safety news, views and activities needed to accelerate our efforts to become the safest port operator in the UK. We look to every single person entering our sites to buy in to this goal and take responsibility for looking out for unsafe behaviour and speaking to those involved to keep people safe.

To meet the high standards set, it is essential to ensure there is a consistent, up-to-date and practical training programme in place to educate staff at every level of the business about their responsibilities.

94 of our staff across the UK and Ireland have already been trained in behavioural safety this year. We now have an army of 168 supervisors, managers and directors, each engaging with staff and visitors on a monthly basis. The training provides the skills needed to become a safety coach - someone who is able to quickly identify unsafe behaviours, and importantly, discuss safer alternative working practices with colleagues.

When coaches tour different areas of our business, they are not carrying out formal audits or inspections; they are having friendly, genuine and honest conversations to help keep everyone safe. Our goal is to eradicate preventable unsafe acts, which account for more than 95% of all workplace injuries.

Our health and safety plan commits to increasing the number of trained coaches by a further 50%, whilst also encompassing our third-party labour workforce for the first time. We will soon have sufficient eyes and ears on the ground to make a substantial contribution to reducing injuries.

The half-day classroom-based sessions are a chance to be open and honest about your experiences of health and safety, and learn the skills and techniques needed to help win hearts and minds.

Every single unsafe act we witness that leads to a friendly conversation has the potential to prevent a serious injury.

While this initial stage will ensure that all staff with line management responsibility are trained, this is just the beginning, as we continually look to improve the safety culture across Peel Ports Group.

First aid on the second tee saves a life

We provide a wide range of training to our staff through the Safety365 initiative and competency in first aid is a very important part of that for many of our team. We make every effort to ensure that the skills will never been needed, but as Andy Forshaw found out you never know when you might be called upon to save a life.

Shift Manager, Group Port Control

As a shift manager in the Group Port Control Room at the Port of Liverpool, Andy Forshaw expected his first aid training would most likely be used at work.

Even with excellent health and safety measures in place, the presence of vehicles and heavy machinery, combined with hundreds of workers, means incidents are possible at any port.

Earlier this year, Andy did find himself using his lifesaving knowledge…but on the golf course.

An avid golfer, he was playing in an evening competition in May at his club, Grange Park in St. Helens.

Approaching the second tee, Andy noticed something odd about the two players in front of him, with one lying on the ground and the other stood next to him on his mobile phone.

Andy picks up the story: “As soon as I realised something was seriously wrong I ran to their position.

I found that the player who was ill – Brian – had a deep purple complexion. He wasn’t breathing and had no pulse.

“So I started CPR straight away, continuing until the paramedics arrived. Following the third shock from the paramedic’s defibrillator, Brian’s heart restarted.”

The incident was all the more traumatic for the fact that Brian’s wife was playing on the same course at the time and witnessed most of what went on.

Brian was transported to critical care in Broadgreen Hospital. A week after admittance he had heart bypass surgery, returning home in June, where he has made a complete recovery.

Andy says that the incident really brought home to him the importance of mobile phones and defibrillators in being able to raise the alarm and save lives. He also highlights the critical value of knowing the right CPR technique, with constant compressions to recirculate oxygen already in the bloodstream, complemented by only occasional ‘rescue breaths’.

Why sharing really is caring Lance Weissenborn

Some of you might be familiar with the term ‘shared economy’. For those who aren’t, the chances are you’ve used it without realising.

Uber and Airbnb are two of the most talked about companies in the world at the moment and they’re both classic examples of businesses that operate under an ‘access over ownership’ model.

At Peel Ports, we’ve incorporated this ethos into our new Activa safety scheme as we aim to move from 50% rented vehicles to 100% by 2018. Not only will this enable our fleet to be up to date at all times, it will also save us money by avoiding buying models that will grow old one day, only to be replaced.

We analysed the age profile of some of our vehicles and, being several years old, they were not equipped with the very latest safety technology.

The change to the fleet is being carried out through a new approach to the company’s fleet management, with vehicles now outsourced to Activa Contracts.

We want our drivers to be safer and better equipped to do their job. Using the technology and the data provided by Lightfoot will see driver risk reduce. We recognise the importance of health and safety, and compliance, and partnering with Activa Contracts to deliver a modern vehicle fleet reinforces that commitment.

Renting allows us to update our fleet in time with the latest advancements in technology and ensure that all vehicles are maintained to the highest standards.

Our new rented vehicles allow for speed limits to be set automatically for whenever they enter certain locations. This will allow us to ensure that all cars are travelling at a safe speed in specific zones. As a result of this, we expect to see fewer mishaps, and improved standards of driving.

Technology shift

People of a certain age will remember the TV series Knight Rider, which made David Hasselhoff a household name before his Baywatch days. However, for many viewers, the real star of the show was his talking car, KITT. Technology hasn’t quite provided us with fully automated, bulletproof, crime-fighting cars…yet! But it has created a real-time spoken coaching system that helps drivers to understand exactly how to refine their behaviour behind the wheel. However, we are on the brink of rolling out some game-changing technology that will revolutionise the way we drive.

Lightfoot is being fitted in the 180 cars, vans, 4x4s and minibuses that operate across our seven port sites after a successful six month trial.

The system connects to the vehicle’s engine and uses Formula 1 style analytics to identify the specific vehicle’s efficiency ‘sweet spot’ to optimise performance. When Lightfoot detects the engine is moving out of its sweet spot, it gives the driver both visual and verbal alerts to gently nudge them back into a safer, more efficient driving style as quickly as possible.

Association undertook, in consultation with the Department for Transport, to review the Port Maritime Safety Code (PMSC) and its Guide to Good Practice.

A Navy veteran with over 30 years service at sea, in the air and on the land, Gary shares with us a health and safety update from Marine.

The PMSC requires port authorities to base their own marine operations policies and procedures on a formal assessment of the various hazards and risks that exist within individual sites - these are reviewed regularly to ensure they are up to date. By following the PMSC, a level playing field is created, offering consistency from port to port.

As a port company, a big part of our organisation’s work is directly linked with what happens in the waters surrounding our ports.

By its very nature, dealing with vessels of all sizes and quality can, through the vagaries of tides and wind, be a challenge. Unfortunately accidents concerned with marine operations will happen in this often unpredictable environment. The key for us is to recognise the risks and mitigate them as far as possible to reduce their occurrence and impact.

We are approaching the 10th anniversary of the girting and sinking of the tug, Flying Phantom, on the Clyde in December 2007. This tragic accident resulted in the loss of three lives. Following the Maritime Accident Investigation Branches report into the accident, the United Kingdom Major Ports Group and British Ports

We are very committed to following the code and are compliant with it, a fact regularly endorsed by outside auditors and most recently during an inspection by the Maritime Coastguard Agency.

Across all of our ports we run our unique Marine Safety Management System (MSMS) that dictates thorough standards and practices, which are captured in Standard Operating Procedures.

Like all H&S procedures they are there for a reason and have been derived from hard lessons like the tragedy of the Flying Phantom. If you are not aware of the MSMS and want to learn more, I encourage you to speak to one of the marine teams in your port.

One team Celebrating the Battle of Chatham

350 years ago Chatham Docks at Peel Ports London Medway was the scene of a historic battle between the British and Dutch. Martin Hughes, Marine Services Manager, tells how the team came together to deliver a momentous celebration of ‘The Battle of Chatham’ anniversary.

British Naval history is full of fascinating twists and turns; one such event occurred at what is now known as Chatham Docks, part of Peel Ports London Medway.

350 years ago, in 1667, at the height of the Anglo-Dutch wars, Dutch warships carried out a surprise raid on the Royal Navy’s base in Chatham. With a looming financial crisis, most of the British fleet was laid up; the Dutch caught them by surprise and, in a five-day battle, sank or captured 15 British warships.

Three and a half centuries later, the ‘Battle of Chatham’ as it’s referred to in the Netherlands, is rightfully celebrated by the Dutch. It is also one of the most important moments in Royal Navy history as it spearheaded a revolution that led to two centuries of British naval supremacy.

The government of the UK and Netherlands, along with the Royal Navy, approached us to help with an appropriate celebration to mark the 350-year anniversary of the event, held at Chatham Docks on 7th-12th June 2017.

In my long-standing career with Peel Ports Group, I have undertaken many complicated tasks, however to meet the requirements of the celebrations, we had to step up and work as a team to solve an array of complex challenges.

We started planning back in 2016 and had to work alongside the hydrographics, dredging and marine teams as well as contractor Briggs Marine. The task was to bring the HMS Richmond and HNLMS Holland vessels into the dock for visitors to board the vessels over five days.

In essence, this was the first time the east caisson had been floated and removed for over six years, which required numerous safety checks, and all parties working in collaboration to ensure the safety of the vessels, contractors and our colleagues.

The event attracted thousands of visitors from up and down the country and given its success it will now become an annual event. It is recognised that this could only have been achieved as a result of the outstanding teamwork, diligence and commitment of our staff and contractors at Peel Ports London Medway.

I can’t begin to describe how proud I am of the team for accomplishing this. It has been one of the highlights of my career so far with Peel Ports Group.

Keeping the lights on When the unexpected happens, it takes great teamwork to get back on track. Andrew Wijeyewardena, Senior Manager – Rail Operations, Peel Ports Liverpool, explains how the Rail Operations team worked in partnership with GB Rail Freight and Drax to keep the Drax Power Station running.

Operational excellence means that our customers get a reliable and resilient service and can focus on managing their core activity, not worrying about supply chain reliability.

Unexpected things can happen, especially when multimodal solutions are deployed as in the case of Drax Power, who rely on us to supply their power station with a steady flow of biomass fuel via rail.

When a train outage coincided with planned rail works, a silo space issue started to build up, exacerbated by fewer outgoing rail services.

With decreasing space to store biomass, our customer was faced with a possible demurrage risk as an entire chain of vessels could have been delayed due to a bottleneck in the supply chain.

Taking positive action to avoid Drax incurring unnecessary costs, the team, along with our thirdparty suppliers, designed a creative solution to keep operations moving steadily.

Working with GB Rail Freight, Drax and Simon Watson’s team, we split trains into five wagon sets within the short track available (normally 25 of these are loaded).

We managed a larger number of movements than usual utilising the Kukla loading facility.By communicating effectively with all parties we managed to allocate staff to implement the plan and meet the increased workload.

Rail and vessel discharge times were amended several times a day and re-planned to maximise all available space and to meet our obligation to our customer. As a contingency, we also arranged a road transport option, which in the end wasn’t used by Drax.

Through collaboration, creative thinking and going above and beyond to deliver excellent customer service, my colleagues and third parties were able to deliver a steady flow of biomass to keep Drax Power Station running to provide power the country.

Breaking boundaries In July, Peel Ports Great Yarmouth was involved in the decommissioning of the Leman Alpha BH oil platform. Richard Goffin, Port Director, talks about the growing importance of this sector and how the team successfully delivered Peel Ports Group’s first offshore decommissioning project.

Following my appointment as Port Director of Peel Ports Great Yarmouth in late 2015, we have made numerous steps to develop the capability to handle new commodities. I’m a firm believer in the mantra of breaking boundaries. This means we must always look for new untapped opportunities to keep our business growing.

This has been a tremendous challenge for myself as Port Director and for our team who work tirelessly to keep us moving forward.

Since late 2015, we’ve had countless success stories such as winning a contract to store Hyundai cars, winning a £multi-million contract with Siemens to supply offshore wind farms, and the handling the one millionth tonne of grain for Gleadell Agriculture. The next frontier for Peel Ports Great Yarmouth is to maximise opportunities from the emerging decommissioning sector.

We are perfectly positioned to serve the offshore decommissioning sector, which is set to ramp up, with an average of 65 plug and abandonment of wells forecast for 2021, all with corresponding decommissioning activities.

These present crucial opportunities to grow the business at the port.

Already a thriving hub of activity, Peel Ports Great Yarmouth sits on the doorstep of the Southern North Sea and its oldest field, Brent, which, along with 21 others, is being decommissioned.

We’ve made numerous investments into servicing this sector in the coming years, and handled the first large platform in July of this year with the arrival of the Leman Alpha BH platform.

Leman Alpha is a gas platform operated by Shell, lying approximately 39 miles away from the port in the Southern North Sea. Parts of it, however, such as the satellite platforms supplying it have become redundant; one such installation is platform BH, originally built to house 48 workers serving platforms BT and BK, one of which was decommissioned in the mid 1990’s.

With the first part of the platform arriving in July, marine and operations, alongside health and safety teams, had to work to tight timescales to accommodate the abnormal load on heavy lift crane barge. Achieving this required thorough planning and teamwork from various departments across the Peel Ports Group.

Through a combination of proactive, thorough planning and continuous dialogue with internal departments and external customers such as Petersen, the team at Great Yarmouth managed to achieve a first for Peel Ports Group, and successfully launch our company into the offshore decommissioning market.

New opportunities are crucial to the continued growth of our business, and our team has been outstanding in helping to deliver a series of ‘Group Firsts’ at Peel Ports Great Yarmouth.

As this was a valued customer, the team wes keen to ensure that they carried out a safe and efficient load but, in typical shipping fashion, the steel vessel arrived at KGV at the same time as a 25,000 tonne shipment of I.C.M!

Delaying the vessel was not an option, so we called on all hands from across the Clydeport estate to assist.

What followed was a truly outstanding demonstration of teamwork with slingers, tug drivers and a securing team from Greenock and Hunterston all coming together under the watchful eye of our Operations Foreman, Andy Keenan who, as always, did an excellent job coordinating and supervising the loading.

The vessel was loaded and secured with over 3,000 tonnes of steel plate as planned in two shifts. An excellent performance by all involved.

19 ‘Heartfelt customer service’ Creating positive customer experience is what we strive to do. Our customer relationships are long term and need to be sustained; they are not simply transactional. Here’s just a few examples of heartfelt customer service from across Peel Ports.

Keeping things moving When a pilot at Eastham Locks on the Manchester Ship Canal spotted an oil slick within the 80’ Lock, the team swung into action to protect the environment and get the ships moving again. Jon Cowdry, Senior Manager Marine Operations, takes up the story.

After spotting an oil slick when boarding an outbound vessel, Liverpool Pilot Matt Henderson immediately informed Group Port Control who swiftly alerted the Marine Duty Manager, Joe Blythe.

Joe assessed the situation from photographs provided by the pilot and suspended all shipping movements to prevent the oil escaping into the River Mersey. Adler and Allen (A+A), as our Environmental Services partner was immediately mobilised and once at the scene Joe updated the MCA, EA and other statutory bodies.

Used engine oil from an unknown source upstream had gathered in the lock and in the adjacent sluiceway. The priority was to contain the oil in the sluiceway and to clear the lock in order to re-open the Manchester Ship Canal.

Joe worked with Paul Murphy and Mark Wiggins at Eastham Port Control to assess the impact on shipping, develop recovery plans, and inform affected shipping agents and customers. A vessel was trapped in the lock and an Essar oil tanker held at layby.

We had just a few hours to get the lock back into operation, otherwise the tanker would be delayed by a week waiting for another tidal window.

I arrived in the evening to work with Joe and then took the Saturday night shift. We mobilised the Forth Hunter counter pollution vessel but she could not enter the canal until the lock was cleared of oil – stalemate.

The only option was to manually recover the oil, a messy and time consuming job. A+A had more manpower mobilised but they would not arrive in time for the Essar tanker.

Carmet Tugs then volunteered immediate assistance and this surge of manpower paid off with the lock reopening in good time for the tanker.

The full clean-up took several days with the Forth Hunter playing the main role. This operation was supported by the Engineering, Safety and Marketing teams.

The response to this incident was defined by proactive teamwork. The diligence at the very start bought enough time for Essar’s tanker to have a chance of sailing. This opportunity became reality by the exceptional commitment of our employees and our suppliers working outside of normal hours to get the job done safely when it was most needed.

Heartfelt customer service Volkswagen Group investing for growth

Volkswagen Group, a long-standing key customer for Peel Ports London Medway, has recently strengthened its commitment to the port with significant investment that will see capacity substantially increased. Paul Barker explains how working in partnership with VW has taken Medway down the road to success.

Peel Ports London Medway has always been a crucial automotive hub in the UK. Last year, the port handled over 350,000 cars.

Our largest automotive customer in Sheerness, VW is nearing completion of an ambitious plan to create a port that is fit for the future. For the past nine months, the company has been working on a project to consolidate volumes into three core UK hubs, moving Immingham operations entirely to the Port of Sheerness, part of Peel Ports London Medway.

So far, the project has seen new offices built at the 85-acre site along with other infrastructure improvements.

The VW project team organised the office move of 30 staff from old portacabins into new buildings 1km down the port, which were constructed by Peel Ports.

More reinforced truck lanes were built, so up to 70 car transporters can now be loaded simultaneously, improving efficiency and our ability to deliver vehicles to retailers on time, every time.

An 8,000-space First Point of Rest (FPR) area, now able to handle four ships simultaneously, has also been created for vehicles coming off the ships, while extra load lanes accommodate more cars prior to loading onto transporters.

All the while, operations continued as normal, with the support of VW staff and our staff at Peel Ports London Medway.

Jon Osbiston, the PMO’s Project Manager for Sheerness, who works for VW and who coordinated the effort said, “You couldn’t just stop the port, you had to keep moving cars around to allow the various bits of construction to take place. It’s been like conducting a small orchestra, everything had to be on time and on key.”

The team at Sheerness along with our Group team’s support have demonstrated the art of the possible - their hard work makes success stories such as this, reality.

When Greenpeace protestors recently targeted a VW shipment at Medway, the Peel Ports team was quick to respond and the commitment to heartfelt customer service has been recognised

by VW UK Managing Director, Paul Willis in a thank you letter he sent to the team. Well done to all involved!

Community engagement Building bridges in Sheerness Wildfire Bridge has been chosen as the new name for the bridge being built at Peel Ports London Medway, following a public vote. Residents were asked to suggest names for the structure, followed by a vote. The winning entry was suggested by local resident David Brown, a retired Tug Master and Operations Manager.

The name honours the former HMS Wildfire III Minesweeper base, which now forms part of the London Medway estate.

David explains, “Not many people are aware of the role HMS Wildfire played in the rescue operation to Dunkirk in WWII. Hopefully the new name will help more people remember the historic events that took place so many years ago.”

Later this year David will be given the opportunity to formally open the 230m structure, which will connect the Port of Sheerness with the redeveloped Wellmarsh site.

The £3m investment will help to boost our automotive storage capabilities, creating new jobs and opportunities for the port and local residents.

Investing in the communities local to our ports Peel Ports Group supports a number of sports initiatives in the communities local to our ports. through shirt sponsorship or through investing in facilities for clubs.

In the case of MSC Eastham, an established football club based on the Wirral, we invested in a brand new football pitch, dressing room and stand for the club.

Football in England relies on clubs such as MSC Eastham to raise talented players who can prove themselves in higher leagues. With the support of Peel Ports Group, the club has a secure base for its players and fans for the coming years.

Inspiring young people across the North West Staff at Peel Ports Manchester and Liverpool are encouraged to take part in a new initiative aimed at helping young people to understand how logistics and global supply chains work, through an innovative new board game called Business on the Move.

The game challenges children to find the most efficient way to transport cargo to customers in the North West from China, using a combination of air, sea, road and rail. Each round, students are tasked with delivering a real product to local companies such as B&M and Typhoo, to illustrate the kinds of decisions those working in the supply chain have to make daily.

Last year, as part of a pilot project, we tasked six of our Commercial Team staff at our Liverpool office to inspire and teach Year 12 pupils at the Everton Free School the art of logistics. The pupils learned about Liverpool2 and our Cargo200 Initiative, as well as other projects. Visits like this are aimed at inspiring young people to consider a career in the supply chain, and also to help them learn about the transformative investments we’re making in the region.

Due to the success of the pilot project, we are looking to launch the full campaign with the ambition of visiting 100 schools before September 2018. Celebrating the cultural heritage of Glasgow The Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival is an annual event held in September, which allows members of the public access to view buildings of historic significance throughout the city.

This year, Peel Ports Clydeport opened the doors of its historic Robertson Street office once again. The building is a stunning example of the work of Sir John James Burnet, and features a number of finely

appointed rooms, including details such as French walnut panelling, stained glass, mosaic flooring and gold leaf ornamentation.

Many of our buildings and assets form part of the cultural heritage of regions, and by supporting events such as the Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival, we are pursuing an open door policy towards members of the public, and providing an opportunity to appreciate our rich maritime history.

Working to end hunger in Birkenhead Our Liverpool staff have been donating food at designated collection points in aid of Feeding Birkenhead, a coalition of churches, community groups and affiliated organisations working together to eliminate hunger in Birkenhead.

Throughout September staff left food donations at the Maritime Centre and Logistics Building in order to aid the charity. Feeding Birkenhead is one of a number of charities in Merseyside we intend to support this year.

Scaling 24 peaks of the Lake District in aid of Seafarers UK For several years, Peel Ports Group has taken part in the 24 Peaks Challenge in support of the maritime charity, Seafarers UK. This year, 10 staff members from Peel Ports Liverpool took part in the challenge.

The task involved scaling 24 of the highest peaks in the Lake District, with the aim of raising £2,000 per team.

The two teams managed to raise vital funds to support the charity. The 24 Peaks Challenge has been a popular event each year and staff are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment.
