Locations

Peel Ports’ main terminals serving the South East and East Coast of the UK are Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, and London Medway in Kent.

Great Yarmouth has close proximity to mainland Europe, and the Offshore developments of the Southern North Sea. Peel Ports London Medway has close proximity to London and the largest growth industries in the UK. It is connected to the M2,M20 and M25 motorways, and inland waterways.

Capabilities Great Yarmouth is our premier port to serve the offshore industry off the Norfolk Coast. The site is also able to handle bulk, construction and project cargo products and has recently invested £12m into a new mobile harbour crane and outer harbour expansion.

Peel Ports London Medway has extensive experience in handling key commodities such as forest products, construction, automotive, project cargo and bulk cargo. The site has benefitted from £40 million of recent investment into facilities, such as a new RoRo ramp and the redevelopment of the 50-acre Wellmarsh site into a timber and automotive hub. It is ideally located to get products closer to big development sites in the South East.

The site operates as a one-stopshop, providing excellent customer service to offshore, bulk, and automotive customers.Great Yarmouth offers the shortest North Sea crossing to the northern continental European ports, along with 24hour access due to no tidal restrictions.

The port’s location at the epicentre of the off-shore energy and decommissioning industry means it is ideally placed so serve some of the largest projects on the north sea.

A recent investment into the outer harbour, along with investments into a new mobile harbour crane means that the port is well equipped to offer a multitude of customer solutions. First steps towards a sustainable future The challenge ScottishPower Renewables is undertaking one of the largest offshore wind farm developments in the world, called East Anglia ONE, 43km off the Suffolk coast. Set for completion in in 2020, the project will comprise of 102 turbines, with investment in the region of £2.5 billion.

East Anglia ONE will create approximately 3,000 jobs and generate enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 500,000 homes* by 2020, with a lifespan of 30 years.

In June 2019 the first turbine was due to be installed, marking a significant milestone for the project which is bringing an economic boost to the East of England and wider UK. To ensure the successful onsite construction and installation, ScottishPower Renewables needed a base with the capacity and capability to pre-assemble components on a quayside for transfer on to an installation vessel.

The solution Peel Ports Group, holding more than 50 years of experience supporting the sector in East England, was able to offer ScottishPower Renewables the land footprint and expertise to help deliver the requirements for its project.

Having provided installation and construction support for Shoal, Lincs and Scroby Sands wind farms in the past and due to its proximity to the project (30 miles offshore), Peel Ports Great Yarmouth was chosen as the installation base.

The port, along with ScottishPower Renewables, has co-invested £5 million in infrastructure development to support this project and ensure that the port was suitable. This has included investment in an LHM280 Crane, with a lifting capacity of 84 tonnes, to enable the port to handle larger volumes of bulk and unitised cargo.

All of the turbine components are being pre-assembled and loaded out from Peel Ports Great Yarmouth, including 75-metre fibre glass blades and XX metre-high towers.

The first turbine was successfully transported 30 miles from Peel Ports Great Yarmouth and safely installed at the East Anglia ONE site on XX June. Peel Ports Great Yarmouth is at the heart of the UK energy sector and within close proximity to the world’s largest market for offshore energy projects.

Business as usual for H+H The challenge

H+H is the leading manufacturer of aircrete in the UK, producing the iconic Celcon Block and supplying the construction sector from sites across Europe and the UK. Produced in the UK since 1959, aircrete, originally known as cellular concrete, is made from Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA), a by-product of coal fired power stations. Aircrete blocks are used to build high performance buildings guaranteed to last several lifetimes.

With three state-of-the art factories in Kent and Yorkshire, H+H undertook an extensive refurbishment of its Borough Green factory in Kent, making it the most modern and efficient aircrete factory in Europe.

This meant Borough Green had to cease production and in order to meet the constant demand for their products from the construction industry in the South East, H+H needed to call upon its European plants to top up their supply from Pollington Importing significant amounts of high-quality building materials to the UK and transporting them quickly and efficiently to where they were most needed, was imperative to ensure H+H was able to fulfil orders and maintain its position as market leader.

The solution

Peel Ports was on hand to find a solution. The Port of Sheerness is the leading port serving the construction market in London and the South East, sitting on the doorstep of London, with quick access to the M2, M20 and M25 Motorways.

H+H worked with Peel Ports to create a temporary import facility at Sheerness in order to maintain the level of service to its customers in the South East. Between May 2016 and October 2018 the facility received and stored 124,044 tonnes of blocks from H+Hâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s European factories and rapidly transported them to construction sites across the South East when needed.

With multiple international shipping services calling at Sheerness, port-centric solutions, and rapid access to the South East, using the port made perfect sense for H+H.
