Local Spotlight

Fajita Pete’s opened in mid-February 2022, situated between Cathy’s Cleaners and Juiceland, at the intersection of 2222 and Balcones in the location that formerly housed Berry Austin. Pete’s is a franchise restaurant focusing on catering and delivery of authentic Fajitas. Guests can expect high, quality, fresh meals and will love their expertise in pick-up and delivery. There is no dine-in.

Owner Michael Blalock says the Fajita Pete’s in Highland Park West is the first of many Austin area locations planned. A second location will open in Cedar Park in September 2022. Blalock and his wife live in Houston currently, but are proud University of Texas graduates. They have many friends and relatives who live in and around HPW. So, choosing the location in our neighborhood was an easy decision! Also, because the restaurant delivers in a three mile radius, easy access to Mopac and 2222 allows the location to serve most of the city. They have a passion for bringing convenience to Austin.

Fajita Pete’s strives to be a big part of the neighborhood. Their unofficial Grand Opening featured Smokey the Cannon and benefitted the Austin Boys and Girls Club. They have already hosted numerous spirit days/nights, served and donated to various groups including local school, sports teams and Fajitanon-profits.Pete’sloves to serve fiestas, meetings, events or anything else! They urge neighbors not to be afraid to think outside of the pizza and fried chicken box! And be sure to pre-order for the busy times, like Friday nights, tailgating for football games and other fun fiesta times. Their pro tip: don’t forget to order “extra” queso and margaritas!

On average, we receive about ten pieces of mail a week. Our mail carrier is impressed! However, it is my experience that there is some mail you cannot stop. My husband has spent a lot of time on the phone trying to stop mail from certain companies, but to no avail. Do your best, but try to keep the objective in perspective. Anything you reduce helps the planet (and your mail carrier).

4 The Highland Park West Balcones Area Neighborhood Association News - September 2022 Highland Park West Balcones Area LETTUCE RECYCLE: by Dena Houston The Lonely Mailbox #2

Several years ago, I wrote about how to reduce junk mail. I have now revised this article to include new facts and new ways to reduce it. Almost all of my mail used to go directly from my mailbox to my blue bin. JUNK MAIL seems to be just a fact of life, BUT we can greatly reduce the amount of unwanted mail by doing just a few things. We can also reduce the amount of non-junk mail.

• The average American household receives 848 pieces of junk mail (equal to 1.5 trees) every year – almost 190 million trees for all U.S. households.

HOW TO REDUCE UNWANTED MAIL

• The EPA reports that 60% of all junk mail ends up in landfills and therefore is not recycled. Americans pay $370 million annually to dispose of the junk mail that does not get recycled.

HOW DO I DISPOSE OF A BAG OF CEMENT MIX? You can take it to the Recycle and Reuse Drop Off Center. ARE THERE ANY DUSTERS THAT ARE REUSEALBE? Yes, Swiffer now makes a washable duster that fits onto the hand-held duster wands and mops. Here is a very informative City of Austin recycling website: themanycreativeStaygov/what-do-i-do>.<http://www.austintexas.tunedforfuturetipsthatwillincludewaystorecycleorreuse.Ifyouhavequestionsorrecyclingideas,pleasesendto:<recycling@hpwbana.org>.

Select “go paperless” from their websites.

• Over 100 billion pieces of junk mail is sent through the postal system each year.
