The purpose of the Fairfield Community Gazette is (1) to provide timely, unbiased, and valuable information that can be used to connect, uplift, and support our community and (2) to foster the growth and development of local entrepreneurs, cottage industries, public and private companies, major corporations (including medical facilities), schools, and churches as they continue to thrive and prosper in Fairfield. Our cover story for December fits both purposes. The article below was submitted by Amy Keene; we hope you enjoy it.
For the last nine years, I have worked with children who have disabilities at Ault Elementary School in Fairfield. I have personally witnessed the impact that access to the right equipment can have on those who are “differently abled.” Since we only have Early Childhood at Ault, some of our students move on to Swenke Elementary as they age. I was so excited when I learned that Swenke was fundraising for an Inclusive Playground. My
former students now at Swenke will soon have the opportunity to play in a state-of-the-art, inclusive playground environment designed with them in mind, which will remove both the physical and social barriers to inclusion. Numerous studies support findings that kids learn as they play, which is why servicing the special needs community like this is truly an important cause. A student who is very dear to me has a rare disease, and through the experience of working with her, I've learned a lot about the rare disease community. The official Rare Disease Awareness Day is February 29th, which is also "rare" as it is celebrated only every four years on leap year. Every February, our ECSE team at Ault wears a shirt we made several years ago to support those challenged with rare diseases.
This year, I decided to design a special shirt in support of Rare Disease Awareness and the Inclusive Playground Project at Swenke
Elementary. All proceeds will go to the Inclusive Playground Project. Unfortunately, I am not much of a marketer and have not sold very many shirts yet, so my contribution is small at this point. I very much want to contribute to such a worthy cause and something that is extremely dear to my heart.
The website where purchases can be made is KeenieDesigns.com. There is a section next to the t-shirt with a blurb about the Inclusive Playground Project at Swenke. I am also selling the digital download of the design so that people can purchase something less expensive and still contribute.
My long-term plan is that once Swenke's fundraising project is complete, I will keep this shirt on my website and continue to donate the proceeds to the International FoxG1 Foundation to aid their research on rare disorders.

On September 15, Cypress-based charity Long Way Home hosted the “Shuffle Up and Heal Poker” Tournament at Doghouse Poker Club. The event drew over 100 poker players and monies raised benefitted the Children's Transplant Initiative.
The Children's Transplant Initiative (CTI) maintains six apartments where families can live together near the Texas Medical Center while awaiting pediatric organ transplant surgery. They also offer spiritual, emotional, and financial support to families as they start the transplant process, from the time of diagnosis through their child’s 18th birthday.
Long Way Home is proud to present a donation of $20,000 to CTI as they continue to help local families. Pictured (left to right): Ross and Cheryl Witty from CTI with Amy and Michael Broussard from Long Way Home. To find out how you can make a difference in the world at home, go to www.lwhtexas.com.

Supporting Our Veterans with More Than A Salute!
By Jackie Devine
Since Bill White, the 60th mayor of Houston, was in office, Houston has been a veteran-friendly city. His administration assisted in building a database to connect veterans to local nonprofits, veteran organizations, faith-based charities, corporate recruiters, and other coalition members. He urged citizens to become mentors to returning veterans, to help them find resources, navigate bureaucratic red tape, and respond to veteran requests in 24 hours, if possible. He dreamed, "One by one with mentors and hope, (we can) take them under our wings and express our gratitude as a nation."
The PTSD Foundation of America and it’s residential facility Camp Hope have gone way beyond that ideal. Today, Houston has become the number one spot in the country for veterans. Camp Hope, a peerto-peer organization and the residential arm of the PTSD Foundation, serves combat veterans and their families (at no cost) of all branches of the military and every era of war—some of which have been medicating for decades and in the case of Vietnam Vets, that’s five decades.
Most of us who have lived in the Houston region for some time have heard of Camp Hope and the PTSD Foundation of America. But many of us have never had the opportunity to meet someone who has benefited from the program and is willing to share their experiences.
Lucky for members of Good Shepherd's Classic Adults, on Monday, November 7th, they had the incredible opportunity to meet Alex Yutzey, program manager, and learn about what Camp Hope is all about and how it changed the trajectory of his life.
To put things into perspective, there are just under 20 million veterans nationwide, and every day, according to American Warrior’s Partnership’s Operation Deep Dive™ study, approximately 24 veterans take their own life by suicide each day. Additionally, 20 veterans die per day by Self-Injury Mortality (SIM), or deaths ruled “accidental” or “undetermined” in nature but consistent with self-harm/suicidal behavior. The data shows that 80% of these deaths are due to overdose. With SIM deaths included, the “true” suicide rate among former service members is 44 per day–2.4 times greater than VA statistics previously reported.
The number of Veterans with PTSD varies by service era, as reflected by findings of the PTSD: National Center for PTSD:
• Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF): About 11-20 out of every 100 Veterans (or between 11-20%) who served in OIF or OEF have PTSD in a given year.
• Gulf War (Desert Storm): About 12 out of every 100 Gulf War Veterans (or 12%) have PTSD in a given year.
• Vietnam War: About 15 out of every 100 Vietnam Veterans (or 15%) were currently diagnosed with PTSD at the time of the most recent study in the late 1980s, the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS). It is estimated that about 30 out of every 100 (or 30%) of Vietnam Veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime.
The program provides a safe space for the victims of trauma and posttraumatic stress in which to experience healing where they are taught about PTSD, what it is, and how it has rewired their brain, taught how to cope with it going forward. Then they learn new skill sets dealing with future challenges.
Participants are further supported with housing options and transportation and even encouraged to return to school to earn more income.
To give us an up-and-personal look at the program, Alex shared his journey and the path that led him from Florida to Texas. A story, he said, that mirrors the plight of many who have successfully survived the program and become happy, productive citizens.
He also explained that awareness is one of their biggest challenges at this time, helping them get the word out that they are here in Houston. It is customary for family to contact Camp Hope after a loved one becomes a statistic. And while they are happy to help them navigate the VA and opportunities for their families to get benefits, they want to reach that veteran before they become a statistic.
“We want to catch that veteran before that critical juncture. We also wish every family member knows that the organization is here, on their side, and everything is free,” Alex explains.
As wonderful as this organizations, like any nonprofit, it takes money to operate. All of their services take money to operate. It costs money to turn the lights on, transport veterans to the VA, or move them from Florida, Georgia, or wherever they live.
Plus, they need boots on the ground; we always need volunteers and supporters to serve our vets.
Contact the PTSD Foundation of America and Camp Hope at www. ptsdUSA.org to get information on how to help a loved-one or to see how you can be of service.

Fairfield Women’s club had an amazing year in 2022 with two garage sales, parades for the 4th of July and Christmas, our annual senior girl’s tea, a holiday market and more. We raised money and gave back to our community through grants to the Fairfield volunteer fire department, Ault, Keith, and Swenke elementary schools, Bridgeland high school, and the Swenke PTO for the inclusive playground project.
Our group is an amazing gathering of ladies who love to have fun together and find ways to give back to our community. We have been around for over 33 years and are growing, with new members joining all the time. Next year is shaping up to be even better than before. We start off 2023 with a cake decorating class at our January meeting and a dance demonstration at our March meeting. We also have a lunch date once a month at one of our local eateries.
If you are interested in being a part of something special in our beautiful neighborhood, join us at the Bradford Street clubhouse on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. We would love to host you as our guest and introduce you to the fun and great work that is done by this organization. Visit us at fairfieldwomensclub.org or on Facebook.

Here’s some news to cheer about: the CFISD Board of Trustees passed its fourth consecutive annual budget that featured a tax decrease from the prior year. The proposed rate of $1.2948 is down $.0444 from the year before. When paired with a 20% CFISD optional homestead exemption and a $40,000 state exemption, a CFISD taxpayer with a home valued at $350,000 would pay a tax based on $240,000 of value. Choose CFISD.

CFISD names inaugural principal for Middle School No. 20
Elizabeth Bradley, principal at Pope Elementary School, was named the first principal for CFISD’s 20th middle school on Oct. 27.
Middle School No. 20 is under construction in the Bridgeland masterplanned community. The new threestory middle school is located on the Bridgeland Educational Village site, which consists of Bridgeland High School and Wells Elementary School. Middle School No. 20 is set to open in August 2023.
Bradley has 22 years of experience in education, beginning with two years in Houston ISD before arriving in CFISD as a fourth grade math and science teacher at Horne Elementary School in 2003. She helped open Andre’ Elementary School as a fourth and fifth grade math and science teacher in 2006 before moving to Aragon Middle School, where she served as a math teacher and campus content instructional specialist. Bradley then helped open Salyards Middle School in 2011 by serving as a campus content instructional specialist. In 2013, she was named the director of instruction helping teacher at Kahla Middle School before being named the director of instruction at Kahla, working in that role for four years. Bradley accepted her current principal position at Pope in 2018.
Bradley earned her Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Communications from Sam Houston State University and her Master in Curriculum and Technology from the University of Phoenix. She is a National Association of Elementary School Principals certified principal mentor, has served as a national and district Quantum Learning trainer and has served on several district committees. Bradley was also named a spotlight teacher at Andre’ and Aragon in 2006 and 2008, respectively.
“I am honored to serve as the first principal of our newest middle school,” Bradley said. “I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence in the Bridgeland community and growing relationships with both current and future families. Together we will fulfill the vision for the CFISD educational village.”

Experience the Christmas Season at Good Shepherd
If you have lived in Fairfield for a long time, or if you are new to the community, you are welcome at Good Shepherd at 20155 Cypresswood Drive! For almost 30 years, Good Shepherd has met the spiritual needs of people of all ages here in our community. Every Sunday morning, there are two distinctly different services. At 9:15 you’ll enjoy the traditional service with a choir and an orchestra. At 10:45am you’re invited to attend the contemporary service! The only difference in the 2 services is the music.
In addition to the Sunday services, there are many other ways to get involved...Sunday School, Bible Studies, Youth Group, Classic Adults (55+) and much more. There is something for everyone! Here are the major events during this Christmas month. Hope to see you soon!
Christmas at Good Shepherd - Friday, December 9th from 6-9pm... Join us as we kick off the holiday season! Bring the entire family and create memories through our longstanding Fairfield tradition, Christmas at Good Shepherd! This is a FREE family event featuring real snow, pictures with Santa, live music, hot dogs, hot cocoa, and even some s'mores!!! The Christmas story will be told through song and scripture alongside a live nativity scene. Mark this date on your calendar to enjoy a wonderful neighborhood celebration of family, friends, community, and Christmas!
Christmas Concert, Sunday, December 11th at 4PM... Join the Good Shepherd Chancel Choir, Orchestra, and Pastors for an afternoon of sacred and secular symphonic Christmas music. All of the tunes will be familiar and you'll have several opportunities to sing-along. In addition to the special music, you'll hear devotionals based on favorite Christmas movies and the reading of the Nativity story in Luke 2. This event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome to attend.

Cypress Creek Baptist Church
We are so excited to share that we have started an AWANA program at Cypress Creek Baptist Church. What is AWANA? AWANA (which stands for Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed) is a program for kids that includes Bible study, Bible memorization, and games. The kids earn AWANA bucks for various things and then have a store where they can buy items. It’s a great way for kids to learn about the Bible and how much God loves them. The AWANA program is from 5:30
pm – 7:00 pm, every Sunday evening. Kids can join at any point. You can register your kids at www.cypresscreekbaptist.church. We invite you to bring your kids from 4 years old to 5th grade. There is a once-a-year registration fee of $20 for the first kid and $10 for each additional kid. Cypress Creek Baptist Church, 21870 Northwest Fwy, Cypress, Texas 77429, 281.469.6089
