Greetings,

It is my honor to extend greetings to the participants of the 43rd Annual Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion. This annual affair is hosted to honor high school students of high scholastic and ethical standards. Tonight, twenty-nine young men and women will be presented to the Dayton community and recognized for their noteworthy accomplishments. Each participant has proven to be worthy of both admiration and commendation.

Jewels and Gems, this evening will spotlight your self-confidence and poise in the accomplishments you have attained. We trust the Cotillion process has enhanced the skill sets necessary for a bright future as you begin “Soaring with Elegance and Excellence!” I applaud you for being committed to the program. Thank you to the parents, family members, and friends for the support, encouragement, and involvement provided to the Cotillion participants and Beta Eta Omega Chapter.

Greetings and welcome to the 43rd Annual Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion! I’m thrilled to be able to enjoy this wonderful celebration of our youth ‘in person’ again. The Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion is the premier event to showcase the stellar achievements and aspirations of some of the best and brightest youth in the city of Dayton and surrounding areas.

Since 1981, Beta Eta Omega Chapter has been intentional in the support of our youth through this program that culminates in this elaborate affair that serves to introduce them to some of our cultural heritage and reward them for their excellence in their academic journey. Under this year’s theme of “Soaring with Elegance and Excellence”, this program promises to continue to encourage and uplift our youth by focusing on leadership, scholarship, community service and cultural enrichment. We’ve provided training and growth opportunities in these areas to act as a catalyst in the development of these young women and men. And we top off this experience with an elegant affair to boast the outstanding academic and community accomplishments of these participants.

Jewels and Gems, I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities you have now to build your character, establish yourself as a person of integrity, create positive change in your circles of influence, and grow into the leaders you were born to be. Congratulations to each of the 2023 Ebony Jewels and Gems and may God continue to bless your endeavors.

It is our distinct honor to welcome you to our 43rd Annual Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion.

Our theme this year, Soaring with Elegance and Excellence, defines our twenty-nine outstanding high school seniors and how they represent their families, schools, and communities. They are confident in themselves, possess a strong sense of purpose, lead with a vision and compassion, have excelled academically, are creative, and are committed to making a difference in our society.

Jewels and Gems, tonight as you celebrate and are recognized for your many accomplishments, we want you to know how proud we are of your hard work and diligence. Stay focused on your dreams. Pursue your education with diligence and maintain goals that will prepare you to live a life that is full of joy and happiness.

To the families and friends of the 2023 Jewels and Gems, we thank you for your encouragement, love, and support. We realize how essential your involvement is to the success of this program. To the members of Beta Eta Omega Chapter, we appreciate the time and effort you have given to make this Cotillion a memorable event for our Jewels and Gems.

KaJeza Hawkins

KaJeza Hawkins a native of the Gem City, born and raised in Dayton Ohio. She graduated from the Dayton Early College Academy with honors in 2016. Miss Hawkins continued her education and received her degree from Wilberforce University in Mass Media Communication in 2021.

During her time at Wilberforce, the nation's first private historically black college, she was crowned the 93rd Miss Wilberforce University, and joined many organizations including the historic Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest undergraduate chapter in the Great Lakes Region!

She began her journalism career with several internships, one right here in Dayton and another in Raleigh, NC. She then went to WHIZ Zanesville, Ohio where she started as a reporter and later became the Evening Anchor before she came back home to Dayton, where she now is a reporter for Channel 2. She is so happy to be back home telling the stories of the community she grew up in.

Rep. Willis Blackshear Jr.

Willis Blackshear Jr is currently serving in his second term as State Representative for Ohio’s 38th House District, which includes the City of Dayton, Riverside, and parts of Huber Heights.

Rep. Blackshear serves his hometown the only way he knows how by working together to find solutions to the issues that matter most to working people and families. He is prioritizing ways to reinvest in area neighborhoods and communities, bring tax dollars back to the district and put more money back in the pockets of Ohio taxpayers. Rep. Blackshear is committed to helping Ohioans achieve the American Dream.

Whether it’s attending Church on Sunday, helping with community service or stopping by local sporting events; Rep. Blackshear is active in his community. He prides himself on being an accessible Representative. He regularly hosts events in his district, and always prioritizes helping constituents and listening to their feedback.

A Dayton-area native, Rep. Blackshear formerly served as an outreach specialist at the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office and earned his BA in Political Science from Wright State University in Dayton. He is currently pursuing his MBA at Ohio State University.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college women. Alpha Kappa Alpha’s influence extends beyond college campuses; women of Alpha Kappa Alpha are active in every sector of our community.

For more than a century, the Alpha Kappa Alpha network has been an indomitable force for good in communities, states, nations, and the world. AKA has taken bold and courageous action in the interminable fight for full civil and human rights – advancing civil rights and liberties; enriching minds and encouraging life-long learning; fostering cultural affinity and development; delivering aid to the poor, the sick and underserved; motivating and guiding youth; and collaborating with like-minded organizations to maximize their impact on as many lives as they can in as many places as they can.

Our current International Program theme, “Soaring to Greater Heights Through Service and Sisterhood” embraces six initiatives:

History of Ebony Jewels and Gems

Beta Eta Omega Chapter held its first Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion on April 25, 1981, under the leadership of President Inez T. Nunley. For many years, the members of Beta Eta Omega Chapter expressed an interest in sponsoring a Cotillion for high school senior young men and women. The members wanted an event to adequately recognize the outstanding academic, school and community accomplishments of these students. Additionally, prior to 1981, the senior students of our youth leadership group, the Al-Ka-Pals, had been acknowledged with a “Senior Recognition Day”. However, the senior Al-Ka-Pals of 1981, under the presidency of Naithel “Tuffy” Hall, requested a more eloquent affair.

The Al-Ka-Pals Advisor, Donna Payne, suggested to the chapter members that an advisory council be established to plan and implement an elaborate activity for all high school seniors. Chapter members who volunteered to work on the council were Carolyn Day, Marionette Gibson, Judy Hall, Lillian Jones, Barbara Lewis, Nancy Palmer, Paula Sharper, and Joné West. After numerous proposals were reviewed, a proposal presented by Marionette Gibson was approved by the membership of Beta Eta Omega Chapter and the Al-Ka-Pals. As a result, the Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion was established. Members Carolyn Day and Nancy Palmer were the first co-chairmen.

The Cotillion experience has four basic components of leadership, scholarship, service, and cultural enrichment. The culmination of this process is the highlighting of the participants’ achievements and aspirations. Eligible Cotillion participants are also awarded scholarships to further their education goals. To date, over 1200 seniors have participated in the Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion. As well as more than $700,000 has been awarded in scholarships.

Since the inception of the Cotillion, it has been our goal to honor the outstanding accomplishments of young men and women with an extraordinary affair. Therefore, we are pleased to provide this year’s Jewels and Gems with an unforgettable event.

“If” for Jewels

If you can trust yourself though others doubt you And conquer fears that limit what you dare So you can freely give to those about you The skills and talents that are yours to share;

If you can live, not for your pleasure only, But gladly lend your gentleness and grace To warm the hearts of those whose lives are lonely And help to make their world a better place:

Jewel MiKayla Aaron HerStory

In addition to being a responsive and productive student academically, Jewel MiKayla has held a significant leadership position amongst her peers as the Miami Valley CTC Student Ambassador. She has also been a team member for The American Rocketry Challenge (TARC) and a member of the Engineers Club of Dayton. Jewel MiKayla’s work with the community has not been overlooked for its value and significance, as she has volunteered with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. She has also worked as a Sales Assistant at Charmed By Riss, making jewelry and assisting customers.

Jewel MiKayla’s inspiration to pursue her dreams stems from the encouragement and lessons taught by her parents. She shared, "My mom has always guided and motivated me through my educational path, and my dad encouraged my understanding of the engineering path.” She lives by her parent’s inspirational guidance to “Listen, Focus, and Pay Attention! By doing these things, you always achieve any goal you set.”

Jewel MiKayla’s philosophy is “Life is meant to be enjoyed, so make it a fun-filled adventure.” She describes herself as a “charismatic young lady with the willingness and drive always to accomplish her goals.” These goals include continuing her education at Sinclair Community College or the University of Cincinnati and pursuing a degree in architecture with a minor in construction management.

Jewel Carmarie Beautiful Conner HerStory

Jewel Carmarie has excelled academically, earning membership into the National Honor Society. She has participated on the cheerleading team, and in an effort to gain work experience, she has obtained employment at Chipotle Mexican Grill and is currently working at Children's Place.

Jewel Carmarie deems serving as an usher in her grandfather's church, Greater Revelation of Christ Missionary Baptist Church, as a significant community activity. Her involvement ties with her philosophy of life to “enjoy and embrace every moment and follow examples of Jesus Christ.” She maintains this outlook by leaning on her mother’s encouraging words "Keep looking towards God to lead you where you are going. He always has your back."

Pursuing the dental technology career pathway, Jewel Carmarie has interned at Five Rivers Dental Office. She was inspirationally triggered to this field by her Dental Technology teacher Ms. Thompson. Jewel Carmarie recognizes that Ms. Thompson's supportive encouragement has influenced her decision to pursue this area of healthcare, stating, "She always pushes me to do better and helps me fulfill my dreams of becoming a Dental Hygienist.” She is looking forward to continuing her education at The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, or Shawnee State University and plans to major in health sciences to become a Dental Hygienist.

Jewel Ciara Edon Cornish HerStory

While working diligently to achieve academically, Jewel Ciara has participated in several areas of service and extracurricular activities. She is the Student Council Vice President, a member of the cheerleading squad, and the Homecoming Court. She has also participated in the Trio Club and Internet Club. Her hobbies include photography, writing, reading, gardening, dancing, and discovering new music. Coupled with being able to successfully manage her academics and participate in extracurricular activities, Jewel Ciara has been employed as a childcare provider and as a Chick-fil-A Crew Member, which has assisted in incorporating self-sufficiency in her development of life skills. She credits her mother with providing her with the inspiration to stay focused. She shares, "My mother inspires me because she showed me that with determination and perseverance, you can overcome anything."

Upon graduation, Jewel Ciara is planning to continue her educational goals at North Carolina A&T State University, Florida A&M University, or Kentucky State University. She will pursue a degree in nursing, specializing in neonatal care, with the aspiration of working as a traveling medical professional. Wherever her career leads, she will continue to reflect on her mother’s message of “I have not failed; I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

Jewel Kenadi Sha'Dale Cranford HerStory

Throughout the course of her studies, Jewel Kenadi’s trustworthiness, management skills, and dependability were evident in the leadership positions she was entrusted to perform. This includes providing morning announcements, participating on the Advisory Leadership, and working as a summer DECA Prep “Teacher.” In addition to fulfilling various leadership roles, she fosters her school’s team spirit and pride by participating on the Cheer Team and the Homecoming Decorations Team. Her hobbies include spending time with family and friends, shopping, sleeping, and having “personal days.”

In addition to successfully managing her academic and extracurricular activities, Jewel Kenadi has maintained employment and built work experience as a crew member at McDonald’s and Chipotle Restaurants.

Jewel Kenadi attributes most of her motivation and influence to her parents, cousins, uncle, and grandparents. She states, “They’ve influenced me to have a better life than they did growing up.” Her parents’ message to her is, “Be the best you!”

Jewel Kenadi is a bright and energetic individual who is dedicated and open-minded to new ideas. She is preparing to continue her educational pursuit at The Ohio State University and pursue a degree in social work with a minor in criminology.

Jewel Jalyn Madisyn Cummings HerStory

Over the course of the last four years at Northmont High School, Jewel Jalyn has been very focused on her academics, as well as being active within various school organizations and programs. She is the founder of the Northmont Black Student Union, Senior Class Student Government Representative, a mock trial member, and a peer mentor. Jewel Jalyn's sense of service and commitment extends beyond the educational arena, as she is also a member of the Young Ladies Aspiring Greatness and an active member of Germantown Pike Church of Christ.

Jewel Jalyn acknowledges her parents for fostering the inspiration and encouragement within her to achieve academically and personally. She states, "They've shown me that it is possible to become successful, even if the odds are against you." Jewel Jalyn’s parents’ message to her is, “You can do anything you set your mind to." Through her creativity and hard work, Jewel Jalyn's sense of independence and creativity has encouraged her to develop her own candle business titled Serene Fragrance. Her philosophy of life is, "You didn't come this far, only to come this far."

As Jewel Jalyn prepares to graduate, she is looking forward to beginning her undergraduate studies at Tennessee State University, Clark Atlanta University, or Wilberforce University. She plans to major in Spanish and English with a professional career goal of becoming a high school teacher instructing future students in these languages.

Jewel Soraiah Arielle Easterling HerStory

Jewel Soraiah is a bright and talented senior, participating in theatre plays and musicals. Her interests and activities have extended and included projects with Limelight Studios. Additionally, her civic and social interests have been significant as Jewel Soraiah has volunteered at a nonprofit organization for racial equality as well as tutoring and volunteering with the Gem City Heat Sports Team. Her hobbies include writing, singing, baking, and traveling.

Jewel Soraiah shared that much of the inspiration and commitment to herself and her future goals are due to her mom, Viola Davis, family, and Eden Washington. She affirms that they have influenced her by "Teaching me to push myself, work hard, and not to give up. They've helped me grow tremendously, and I couldn't be more thankful."

While retaining a strong academic foundation and establishing civic and social awareness, Jewel Soraiah has maintained employment and built work experience at Jubilee Childcare Center and as a hostess at Shen's restaurant.

Her mother reminds her that “The truth of who you are is in your name. Your values, how you hold yourself be Soraiah Arielle, and you'll create what you desire easily."

Jewel Soraiah plans to attend Howard University, Temple University, or Ithaca College, where she wants to focus her studies in film production, directing, and producing, and acting. Wherever her plans lead, her philosophy of life is that “God is right where I am at all times, and I am all that God is."

Jewel Alexa Starr Edwards

Jewel Alexa Starr Edwards HerStory

Jewel Alexa is an honor student and a scholar athlete. Laying the foundation for her professional goals, she is a varsity cheerleader, a student athletic trainer assistant, and a member of the track team. She is also a member of the Northmont Black Student Union. She enjoys mentoring the Northmont PeeWee Cheerleaders, traveling, and volunteering at Utopia Beginnings Group Home. In addition to her athletics and community activities, Jewel Alexa has worked as a Walmart cashier and Newby Orthodontic Center.

Jewel Alexa’s spiritual discipline is instilled through her attendance at Phillips Temple Church. She is also blessed with a positive support system of inspiration and encouragement from her parents and her sister Leah. She acknowledges her parents as "My pillars of strength," and her sister inspires her to "Be great in all things."

Jewel Alexa’s life projection is to "Go to college to study sports medicine and become a sports Medicine Physician Assistant and Athletic Trainer." She will attend Wright State University and study exercise science to become an athletic trainer. And wherever her career leads, she will reflect on her parents’ message that “Alexa's loyalty and determination will allow her to be successful at achieving her dreams.”

Jewel Mi’Asia Sivonne Edwards HerStory

Jewel Mi’Asia excels in athletics as a member of volleyball and basketball teams. She is also a dedicated worker, serving as a cashier and receptionist at Youthworks, a program that allows youth to improve their life skills management, increase their job readiness skills, and provide work experience opportunities. She is also involved with Women of Color, an organization that supports young women in seeing the power within others and themselves by fostering leadership and community change.

The self-disciplined Jewel Mi’Asia has developed and her athletic skills have contributed to her ability to participate successfully and work with others to obtain mutual goals. As she continues her journey, the words of Harriet Tubman will follow her, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer; always remember you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion for reaching for the stars to change the world.”

After graduation, Jewel Mi’Asia future aspirations include attending Tennessee State University or Kentucky State University. Her educational concentration will be in the healthcare field, majoring in Physical Therapy. She desires to utilize her educational foundation and skills by becoming a nurse practitioner or physical therapist in the area of Sports Medicine.

Gem Diallo George Forest HisStory

Gem Diallo has successfully managed academics and athletics as well as maintaining the leadership position of Captain on his high school's track team. He is a member of the Environmental Club and enjoys working out, running, and swimming.

Helping those who are less fortunate plays a significant part in Gem Diallo's awareness and desire to serve. He has volunteered at numerous soup kitchens and after-school programs. He has also volunteered at the Miami Valley Animal Resource Center. Despite Gem Diallo's full schedule of academics, athletics, and volunteer services, he has established and maintains a level of independence by previously working as an Attraction Host at Scene 75 Entertainment Center and currently working as a lifeguard for the YMCA. He continues to move forward, motivated by his parent’s message that “hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

Gem Diallo’s guiding philosophy is "God first, family second, and everything else comes after." He acknowledges his parents, grandparents, and his basketball and track coaches as individuals who have inspired his discipline and commitment to pursuing his goals. He shared, "They have all inspired me with their determination and strict work ethics. I strive to achieve my goals, to let them know how much I value and appreciate them and all of their support."

Gem Diallo is exploring his undergraduate options at The Ohio State University, Ohio University, or Tuskegee University. He plans to major in biology and aspires to become a veterinarian.

Jewel Gabrielle Alexis Green HerStory

School and community activities have been an integral part of Jewel Gabrielle's experience. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Latin Honor Society, the Spanish Club, and the Latin Club. She serves as the Student Council-Trinity House and Family Room-Captain, secretary of the Medical Career Club, and captain of the Academic Team.

Jewel Gabrielle is the co-captain of the women's varsity golf team and is a member of the varsity track and field team. Her community activities include being a twelve-year member of the Girl Scouts and First Tee Golf, a youth development organization that enables kids to build inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience. As well as she volunteers at Kettering Health Network Soin Hospital.

Jewel Gabrielle identifies Mr. Fox, her First Tee coach, as someone influential in her life by providing her support and encouragement when she may have been discouraged or unsure of her ability to succeed. She stated, “He coached me for most of my childhood and is one of the most patient men I have ever met.”

Jewel Gabrielle’s desire is to obtain her degree in biology or chemistry following the pre-med track. Afterward, she plans to complete medical school and become an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Jewel Courtney Renee' Hastings HerStory

During her high school years, Jewel Courtney has been extremely busy in sharing her knowledge and skills with other students to support their academic and social success. She tutors kindergarten and first-grade students who require additional educational assistance, as well as she serves as a DECA peer mediator, passing on the values and skills of conflict resolution. Jewel Courtney has accumulated more than one hundred hours volunteering with the board of elections, neighborhood cleanups, Early Visions Purpose Center, and Racial Justice Now. In addition to her academics and community service, she has built work experience as an employee of Cold Stone Creamery, Aeropostale, and Journey.

Jewel Courtney recognizes her parents and her brother as aiding her to be successful. She states, “My father has a determination and drive to ensure his family doesn’t go without. My mother is dedicated to her children, husband, and family in a way that is beyond selfless. My brother leads by example as a man of God, keeping the laws, statutes, and commandments.”

Jewel Courtney also has a creative side, enjoying the artistry of cosmetology by working with hair, nails, and lashes. Her philosophy is to “focus on making yourself better, not on thinking you are better.” Her parents inspire her with the message of “Never settle for second best. When the answer is no, it just means a greater opportunity is waiting. No matter what you face in life, we will always be there for you to figure it out together. Confident women are raised by loving dads. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake, it’s how you learn and grow.”

Jewel Courtney has worked diligently, maintaining a dual enrollment at DECA and Sinclair Community College Credit Plus Program. She has been accepted to Tennessee State University and is also considering Howard University or North Carolina A&T State University. Her professional interest is to become a Dental Hygienist.

Jewel Kamaria Ja'vonna Hughes HerStory

Balancing the demands of academics and sports, Jewel Kamaria plays on her school’s track and field and soccer teams. She is also a member of the Dayton Wolverine Track Club. She has participated with WDANZ at Stivers, as well as she has been employed as a Kroger associate since August 2022. She enjoys playing sports, dancing, and baking.

Jewel Kamaria’s goals have been influenced by several supportive family members and others, including her mother, sisters, uncle, friends, and coaches. She credits them with laying the foundation for her to develop strong values, make healthy choices, and establish self-discipline in the tasks and obligations that she endeavors. She states that their efforts and sacrifices have influenced her to become “a better person and to do the right thing.”

Jewel Kamaria’s projection for the future is to attend college, run track, study sports medicine, and hopes to run professionally. Her family continues to inspire her with a message of “Congratulations for being an outstanding student-athlete. Remember never to give up and stay faithful to your dreams.”

She plans to attend Tennessee State University, the University of Michigan, or the University of North Carolina to obtain a degree in Sports Medicine with an overall goal of becoming an Athletic Trainer.

Jewel Charis Elaina Jarvis HerStory

Jewel Charis is a highly motivated and focused student, serving in various leadership positions within her school and the community. She has served as President of the Black Student Union, Founder and President of the Black Experience Affinity Group, Vice President of the Chinese Honor Society, and Captain of the varsity Lacrosse Team. Jewel Charis’ community involvement and service have been essential as her spiritual foundation is centered as a member of Aspire Church. She is an Al-Ka-Pals member and has held the position of Secretary and Treasurer. She has also served others by sharing time, knowledge, and experience as a volunteer mentor and tutor.

In addition to a full academic workload and leading various organizations and activities, Jewel Charis is a talented piano and saxophone player. As well as she has made time to secure employment, having worked as a crew member for Raising Cane’s and Culver’s restaurants.

Jewel Charis indicates that her parents have influenced her to progress forward by instilling values and motivation to excel academically and interpersonally. She states, "They have always pushed me to do my best in every aspect of my life." Her parents also remind her that “You need not apologize for being brilliant, talented, gorgeous, rich, or smart. Whatever they give you, they can take away. Whatever you take is yours.”

Upon successful completion of her senior year, Jewel Charis plans to attend North Carolina A&T State University, Florida A&M University, or Howard University. Her field of study will be political science and psychology.

Jewel Sienna’s community involvement has played a significant role in her overall growth and commitment to learning the importance of giving of self for the development of others. These values of service have been reinforced through her ongoing participation as a member of the Al-KaPals, the Adventure Central 4-H Youth Development, the Home Avenue Youth, and serving as a mentor for the Dayton Wolverine Track Club. However, her involvement does not stop there. She is active in dance, theatre, and photography and has been a gymnastics champion for multiple years. In addition to having a full range of activities, Jewel Sienna has been employed at Sunny Days and Spaghetti Warehouse.

According to Jewel Sienna, she has been fortunate to have her parents; grandparents, Roger and Sharon Neal; Montessori teachers, Ms. Brenda Brown and Ms. Johnson; Ms. Peaches at Adventure Central; Gymnastics Coaches/Mentors, Brittany, Jeanette, Melissa, Chris, Angie, and Donay; Track Coaches, Powell, Keith, and Aubrey; Stivers teacher Deshona Pepper-Robinson; and Elizabeth Koproski to influence and inspire her towards social and academic achievement.

Jewel Charlia is a varsity cheerleader and the sports hype squad cochair. Aside from focusing on her academic goals, she enjoys photography and has served as the photographer for her high school newspaper, special events, and performances and participated in the Career and Technical Education Photography Program.

Jewel Charlia’s responsibilities extend beyond her school experiences, as she is an active member at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. She serves as President of the Hattie Jackson Guild Girls Ministry. She has assisted in food service preparation and distribution at the DEG summer enrichment camp and served as a youth counselor during her church’s summer enrichment camp. She identifies Reverend Denise Gilmore as a great mentor and says, “she has helped me figure out tough situations and challenges and has always inspired me to be great.”

Helping children faced with challenges and mental health issues surrounding their academic life in schools is Jewel Charlia’s goal. Her philosophy is always to be herself, treat others how she wants to be treated, have faith that things will work out, and always stay humble.

Jewel Kamiah is extremely busy with multiple interests and activities. She serves as class President, a SkillsUSA Officer, and a member of the National Honor Society. In addition to performing well academically, she has been employed as a Walmart Sales Associate and is currently employed as a Scene 75 Guest Sales Associate.

Jewel Kamiah identifies her mother as the person who significantly motivates her to stay focused academically and establish a sense of independence and concern for others. She recalls her mother's repeated reminders that “she is here when I need her” and “life is what I make it."

Jewel Kamiah respects and appreciates the value of hard work and has modeled her academic plans along these lines. Her philosophy is “Your success is what makes you feel complete." She plans to attend Alabama A & M, Tennessee State University, or Clark Atlanta University and major in education.

Jewel Ona’s academic success, coupled with athletic discipline, has helped to prepare her for the future. She is an honor roll student, as well as she is actively involved in the Chemistry Club, Student Council, HOSA-Future Health Professionals, and the varsity track and field team. She serves as the local chapter president and the secretary of Ohio for the Girls Assembly. She is active with the Montgomery County Female Leadership Academy and is a member of the Al-Ka-Pals. She enjoys throwing the shot put and discus, attending concerts, and staying active in the community.

Faith and service are her foundational cornerstones, as she attends Bethel Temple. Her inspiration to succeed has come from the influences of her parents and grandparents, which she proudly credits by stating, “They motivate me to try hard so I can be successful and have a career that will allow me to go far in life."

Jewel Ona’s philosophy of life is "You only live once, so enjoy life and make good decisions." She plans to attend Central State University and earn her degree in nursing. Jewel Carrington has been able to manage an array of responsibilities successfully. She is the manager for the basketball team and participates on the track and field team. She has committed time and service by participating in various activities as a member of the Al-Ka-Pals. Despite having a full schedule of academics and community commitments, Jewel Carrington has successfully maintained employment as a hostess at Olive Garden restaurant.

Jewel Carrington identifies her parents and her aunt, Ms. Monica Pearson, as the individuals who have had a significant impact on her to succeed academically and personally. Her life’s philosophy is "Don't let anyone or anything determine your happiness or goals."

Jewel Eri'Nai Love Robinson HerStory

Given a strong sense of self and a personal commitment to succeed, Jewel Eri'Nai has built a solid foundation of service, teamwork, and leadership within her high school, community, and employment. She is involved in her school’s Leadership Development Program, a member of the cheer squad, drill team, and dance. Her community involvement encompasses active participation with the Al-Ka-Pals, volunteering at the Dayton Humane Society, and coaching the “Wee Wee” drill team.

Jewel Eri’Nai’s spiritual commitment is expressed through her attendance at Christian Life Center. She is also blessed with a positive family support system. Jewel Eri’Nai identifies her mom as her role model and states, “She inspired me to do whatever I want and to follow my dreams.” Her mother’s inspirational message to her is, “Life is like a camera…Focus on what’s important. Jewel Eri'Nai is currently employed as a State Test Nursing Assistant (STNA) at Kettering Health-Dayton. She plans to attend Kettering College and continue her path within the nursing field. Her future goal is to train to become a physician assistant and join the United States Air Force.

Gem Michael's interests in school and community activities have been broad and enriching. He is a member of the Northmont Golf Team, Top Teens of America, Business Professional of America, the Al-Ka-Pals, and is President of the Sports Management and Marketing Lab at Miami Valley CTC. His community service includes participating in a community clean-up and food drive. He enjoys playing the trumpet, swimming, and listening to various music genres. In addition to his various activities, Gem Michael has maintained employment since 2021. The inspiration to achieve through hard work and commitment stem from Gem Michael’s parents as well as from his older brother Ricky. Gem Michael shares, "Mom has taught me to have discipline in anything that I am doing. Dad has shown me to have consistency in my work and life. Ricky has shown me that trusting the process and learning over time will pay off." He is further motivated by his parents’ message that “Life is a storm that will forever test you. Don’t wait for blue skies and calm waters that may not come. Derive purpose from resilience. Learn to navigate the raging sea.”

Gem Michael describes himself as one who likes to engage in thoughtprovoking conversations about current events. He states, “I prefer to connect with people in a traditional way, such as bowling and skating with friends, and not just modern ways like social media.” His philosophy is to “always persevere through adversity, never be afraid to fail, not trying is worse than failing. I believe every one failure will gain you five successes.”

Gem Michael's educational plans are to attend Kentucky State University or Wilberforce University, major in technical/business fields, and maximize his knowledge and talents in the United States Air Force.

Jewel Jasmine believes, “You are responsible for the energy created in every room you step in.” Through her academic success and interests, she continues to demonstrate this attitude. She is active with the Stivers dance ensemble and varsity cheer program. She has participated with the Student Council and as a Teacher Assistant. Her community engagement encompasses volunteering for Hands Against Hunger at the Christian Life Center, Rosa Parks Early Learning Center family engagement events, and the local Veteran's Affairs program. Jewel Jasmine’s employment experience includes working the concession stands and ticket sales for the Dayton Public Schools Athletic Department. Her hobbies include dancing, cheering, arts and crafts, and reading.

Jewel Jasmine acknowledges her parents as the individuals who have inspired her to achieve academically and socially. Jewel Camryn’s high school experiences have been enriched by the range of her activities. These include being active with the Symphonic Chorale, varsity cheer, homecoming committee, and the Al-Ka-Pals. She has also participated as a Unity Day mentor and on the prom committee. Additionally, she has obtained employment opportunities as a YMCA Aftercare worker and a YMCA Junior Camp Counselor. She enjoys singing, cheerleading, working with children, and going sightseeing with her friends.

Jewel Camryn identifies her parents and her sister, Christianna, as a supportive, encouraging, and loving family who have inspired her. She explains, “They all taught me to work hard and that not everything comes easily. They’ve taught me to take care of myself mentally and physically."

Jewel Camryn’s wish is “if I am happy doing what I am doing, no one can tell me I'm unsuccessful.” Her drive and motivation have already proven her ability to succeed. Jewel Airamee is an artistically inspired leader. She is President of Stiver's Women's Choir and a member of Stiver's Honor Choir. For three consecutive years, she has received a superior rating from the Ohio Music Education Association Solo and Ensemble. Her hobbies also include gaming and make-up applications.

Jewel Airamee’s community activities and participation includes the Montgomery County Female Leadership Academy, Girl Scouts, the Al-KaPals, NCNW Dayton Youth Chapter, Jack and Jill of America-Dayton Chapter, Top Teens of America, and Barbizon Modeling.

Jewel Airamee identifies her mother and former choir president as individuals who have been significantly influential and inspiring to her. She states, “I have watched how they mentor and serve as role models to others. Like me, others look up to them.” She also credits her mother for her desire to continue the study of music, including studying the therapeutic advantages music produces. In addition to her exceptional academic performance, Jewel Nevaeh has been actively involved in the French Club, Biology Club, Octagon Club, and the American Sign Language Club. She has also participated in the Women in STEM at Sinclair Community College. She enjoys reading, singing, and playing the violin.

Community service is also a key component of Jewel Nevaeh’s life. As a member of Love Chapel Church of God in Christ, she volunteers to feed the homeless. She works with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and Sicsa Pet Adoption and Wellness Center. In addition to her academics and community service, Jewel Nevaeh's employment history has included working as a Barista at Third Perk Express and providing patient care services at Richmond Foot and Ankle LLC.

Jewel Johnai's high school career has encompassed academic success as well as being able to successfully manage athletics by participating in basketball, volleyball, and holding management positions within organized sports. Her community activities include working with autistic children, The Girls Project, Young Ladies Aspiring Greatness, and Camp Emanuel. She enjoys singing, cooking, and modeling. Spirituality has been a foundational part of Jewel Johnai’s overall character development and values. She sings in the youth choir at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and participates in various church activities. In addition to successfully managing her academics and community service, Jewel Johnai has worked as a Sales Associate at Children's Place, a youth worker with Montgomery County Job Center, and a hostess at Rooster's Restaurant.

Jewel Simone's academic achievements have been successfully integrated with her extracurricular activities and part-time employment. She participates in Stivers dance department, the dance ensemble, and varsity cheerleading. As well as she has been employed as a baker and sales assistant at Crumbl Cookie. She attends St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, where she is an active participant in the Youth Usher Ministry. Her hobbies include dancing, listening to music, and painting.

Jewel Simone acknowledges that her motivation to succeed in pursuing her goals stems from the support and influence provided by her parents, her aunts, Celestine Evans and Melany Wheat, and her grandmother, Ngoc Hue Harper. She indicates these family members have been role models in her life as they “show compassion, strength, vulnerability, love, and selflessness towards others.” It is based on this that Jewel Simone’s philosophy is to “Treat everyone with kindness and respect. Over the course of the last four years, Jewel Jordyn has been actively involved in the Black Student Union, Jobs for Grads, as a football athletic trainer, and Link Crew member. Her community activities include the Al-Ka-Pals and Girl Scouts. She also enjoys reading and painting. In addition to a full academic and community activity schedule, Jewel Jordyn has maintained employment as a receptionist at Skylark Nail Salon and Spa.

Jewel Jordyn attends Corinthian Baptist Church and is motivated by the inspirational message of her parents “There is nothing impossible. We encourage you to continue to strive to do your best. Remember, the word; Impossible says, I'm possible." She identifies her mother as the person who influences her by “showing you have to work hard for what you want.”

Jewel Mara Alané Wright HerStory

Within the educational community settings, Jewel Mara has participated and matured socially and civically through her involvement within Upward Bound, the youth choir, the Al-Ka-Pals, and Dayton Urban Young Life Program. Additionally, she has been a crew member with McDonald’s and is creating and launching her own brand of lip gloss titled SMAQ. Her hobbies include cooking, painting, and dancing.

Jewel Mara’s philosophy is, "Not everyone deserves to know the real you. Let them criticize who they think you are.” However, her inspiration to succeed socially, as well as academically, stems from her parents, her grandmother, Doris, and all her cousins and aunts, who have been supportive. She shares, "They've influenced me by telling me to keep going, and all their hard work pushed me to do better." The ongoing support has fostered strength and encouragement for Jewel Mara to succeed and strive higher. She is further encouraged by her parent’s inspirational statement that "You will always be the miracle that makes my life complete."

Jewel Paige has achieved and maintained academic excellence having membership in the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society. She is actively involved with the Al-Ka-Pals and has participated as a “Youth at the Booth” poll worker. She is a member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church and a member of the Junior Daughters of Knights of Peter Claver. She is a former member of the Jeraldyn School of Dance Performance Ensemble. Jewel Paige’s employment experience includes working the concession stands and ticket sales for the Dayton Public Schools Athletic Department. Her hobbies include photography, dancing, and playing the piano.

Jewel Paige identifies her best friend, Ja'Nya Lewis, her teacher, Mr. Frost, and her father as individuals who have inspired her to dream, set goals and work hard to achieve her personal, educational, and professional desires. She shares, “They have inspired me by encouraging me to try different activities to figure out what I want to do, by letting me know that it is okay not to know exactly what I want to do in life right now and that it is okay to ask others for help because sometimes you just need an outside point of view."

Jewel Paige’s future aspiration is to pursue a degree in electronic engineering with a minor in chemistry. She plans to attend North Carolina A&T State University, Norfolk State University, or The Ohio State University. Her professional goal is to design and build equipment for the medical field. As she pursues her career, she will reflect on her parents’ message of “Always remember the 3 Cs in life: Choice, Chance, and Change. You must make the Choice, to take the Chance, if you want anything in life to Change."
