Beta Eta Omega Chapter held its first Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion on April 25, 1981, under the leadership of President Inez T. Nunley.
For many years, the members of Beta Eta Omega Chapter expressed an interest in sponsoring a Cotillion for high school senior young men and women. The members wanted an event to adequately recognize the outstanding academic, school and community accomplishments of these students. Additionally, prior to 1981, the senior students of our youth leadership group, the Al-Ka-Pals, had been acknowledged with a “Senior Recognition Day”. However, the senior Al-Ka-Pals of 1981, under the presidency of Naithel “Tuffy” Hall, requested a more eloquent affair.
The Al-Ka-Pals Advisor, Donna Payne, suggested to the chapter members that an advisory council be established to plan and implement an elaborate activity for all high school seniors. Chapter members who volunteered to work on the council were Carolyn Day, Marionette Gibson, Judy Hall, Lillian Jones, Barbara Lewis, Nancy Palmer, Paula Sharper, and Joné West. After numerous proposals were reviewed, a proposal presented by Marionette Gibson was approved by the membership of Beta Eta Omega Chapter and the Al-Ka-Pals. As a result, the Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion was established. Members Carolyn Day and Nancy Palmer were the first co-chairmen.
The Cotillion experience has four basic components of leadership, scholarship, service, and cultural enrichment. The culmination of this process is the highlighting of the participants’ achievements and aspirations. Eligible Cotillion participants are also awarded scholarships to further their education goals. To date, over 1200 seniors have participated in the Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion. As well as more than $750,000 has been awarded in scholarships.
Since the inception of the Cotillion, it has been our goal to honor the outstanding accomplishments of young men and women with an extraordinary affair. Therefore, we are pleased to provide this year’s Jewels and Gems with an unforgettable event.

Greetings and welcome to the 45th Annual Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion! I’m honored to be a part of this wonderful tradition of celebrating our youth. The Ebony Jewels and Gems Cotillion is the premier event to showcase the stellar achievements and aspirations of some of the best and brightest youth in the city of Dayton and surrounding areas. We take pride in broadening their horizons through this program and introducing each of them to you.
Since 1981, the Beta Eta Omega Chapter has been intentional in supporting our youth through programming that engages and educates your students. Each year we endeavor to choreograph this elaborate affair that introduces these young people to some of our cultural heritage and reward them for excellence in their academic journey. The theme for this year is “45 Years of Elegance, Excellence, and Achievements,” and promises to encourage and uplift our youth by focusing on leadership, scholarship, community service, and cultural enrichment. We’ve held workshops that provided educational and growth opportunities in these areas to act as a catalyst in their development. And the capstone is this very elegant affair to boast the outstanding academic and community accomplishments of these participants.
Jewels and Gems, I encourage you to enjoy your youth. Take full advantage of every opportunity you have to learn new things. Develop good character and establish yourself as a person of integrity. Seek to leave people and situations better than you found them. Create positive changes in your circles of influence and grow into the leaders you were born to be. Congratulations to each of the 2025 Ebony Jewels and Gems, and may God continue to bless you in your endeavors.
Sincerely,

If you can trust yourself though others doubt you And conquer fears that limit what you dare So you can freely give to those about you The skills and talents that are yours to share;
If you can live, not for your pleasure only, But gladly lend your gentleness and grace To warm the hearts of those whose lives are lonely And help to make their world a better place:
If you can balance dreams with practicality And deal in facts, but never lose ideals, if you Can face the harshness of reality And find the truths that prejudice conceals;
If you can be courageous when defeated And humble in the face of victory, Or give your best until a task’s completed, However difficult that task may be;
If you can temper facts with understanding And seek to gently guide, not to control, And neither be too lax nor too demanding, But keep in mind the worth of every soul;
If you can strive, not caring who gets credit, And work at building bridges and not walls, Or hearing idle slander, just forget it And never fail to help someone who falls;
If you can give your help without begrudging The patience, time and effort you impart Or look at others’ weakness without judging And see, not with your eyes, but with your heart;
If you can take resources that surround you And use them in the way you feel you should, You’ll be a woman…and all those around you Will be the richer for your womanhood!
—Gale Baker Stanton
If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs, and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself When all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting, too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating And yet don’t look too good nor talk too wise; If you can dream and not make dreams your master, If you can think, and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with triumph and disaster, And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’re spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings, And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them: “Hold on!”
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings— Nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And which is more you’ll be a Man, My Son!

After graduation, she intends to serve in the Air Force and plans to pursue pre-nursing studies at Howard University or Tennessee State University.

It is choosing to rise above your circumstances, no matter how difficult, and become the person you’re meant to be.”
Jewel Starr plans to attend Bowling Green State University with a goal of earning her master’s degree in early childhood education. To accomplish her goal, she will continue to be guided by her life’s philosophy from Joshua 1:9, “I have commanded you to be brave and strong, haven’t I? Initiative may drive us, but efficiency keeps our hands on the wheel and our foot appropriately accelerating or ready to break. When we are driven, we often focus so much on achieving our goals that we become reckless. There are times to go full speed, but there are times to slow down a bit, turn off into a new direction or pull over and figure out where we are. You are on the road to Reign supreme! Keep it going in that direction.

Seasoned Pearl to a Radiant and Upcoming New Pearl
Glossy reflections coat the inside shell, Revealing a sphere with a story to tell. The tales of the sea in a glistening white ball, Formed and shaped from a grain that’s so small Humbly created from a piece of grit, A symbol of perfection, wisdom and spirit, Proof that perseverance, patience and grace, Creates such a beauty in life’s embrace.
~Poem by Lisa Van Der Weilen
A strong woman works out every day to keep her body in shape.
But a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her Soul in shape
A strong woman isn’t afraid of anything
But a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fears.
A strong woman won’t let anyone get the best of her
But a woman of strength gives the best of her to everyone
A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future
A woman of strength realizes that the little mistakes can also be God’s Blessings and capitalizes on them.
A strong woman walks sure footedly
But a woman of strength knows that God will catch when she falls
A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face
But a woman of strength wears Grace
A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey
But a woman of strength has faith that once on the journey she will become strong.
You are a Strong Woman of Strength. Best of luck in all your future endeavors.
Love,
The Davis Family

Love you always,
