DEAR FAMILIES,

A child’s first school and educational experience should be full of wonder and joy. We have just completed the 58th year of Peachtree Presbyterian Preschool and each day we’ve seen children grow in their cognitive, language and literacy, social and emotional, motor, and problem solving, skills in an environment that provokes their imagination and creativity.

How does this wonder and joy happen? It comes from a nurturing community that nudges the children each day to learn and grow in their knowledge. We are appreciative of the parent support for this year.

REGISTER FOR CAMP PEACHES! www.peachtreepresbyterianpreschool.org JUNE 11-15 & JUNE 18-22 Come join the fun at Camp Peaches! Skilled teachers and enthusiastic youth assistants provide an exciting, safe environment for campers to develop their active imagination through hands-on adventures.

Unique classes introduce campers to the stimulating world of discovery. Camp Peaches is designed for children who will be Twoyears-old by February 28,2018, through rising 3rd graders. Children may attend one or both weeks.

The camp registration fee is $200 for one week or $380 for both.

Registration is non-refundable.

THE YELLOW CLASSROOM, TWO-YEAR-OLDS Building a sense of community through shared stories and sketching family Family has been a strong thread throughout the school year. The children enjoyed sharing stories about family members, weekend outings and family pets. We observed the children finding comfort and connection through family photos. We also noticed early markings and sketches generally were representative of family members. As the children express more interest in representing family through sketching, we worked on closing shapes such as circles and ovals.

We also had many conversations around emotions: what they meant and how we express them. Children are born with a propensity to draw from approximately age-two. They have their own graphic language, which begins with random scribbles, evolves into crude geometric forms, moves on to simple representations and eventually to complex story-telling pictures.

-Mr. Rogers The summer is already here! Children will be out of school and the days are long. What are we going to do with the children all day?

My goal: no plans!

Enjoy the simplicity of just waking up and let your children guide your day. Let them go outside and just PLAY. Enjoy the summer and use it to build a lifetime connection with your children.

Here are some ideas to present to your child as a provocation, and then let your child create and plan his own play: - Provide the materials: a bucket of water, sponges, brooms, soap, and some little containers.

- Take your children to the beautiful parks and lakes and let them explore nature.

- Use funnels and containers for exploration, pouring, scooping, and watch how different materials flow. You can also use dry elements such as sand or beans.

- I’m a huge fan of mud play. It has so many benefits. It is joyful and relaxing. It provides sensory play and fine motor skill development and test theories. The mess is so worthy. Just use a hose to clean up.

- Rocks! They have so many uses. Kids can stack them and pretend they are food. They can be great for telling stories if you glue some pictures. They can be cleaned and painted. So I really encourage you to go for a collecting rock walk and then have them available to the kids.

- Ice is a great play element in the summer. It incorporates science, exploration, sensory experiences, and observation. I just make different form and sizes of blocks of ice. Complement with with salt and pipettes, spoons and squeeze bottles.

- Shaving cream and paint. This is very engaging. Mix the shaving cream and the paint and provide sponges, pencils, balls, rollers, wine corks and let the fun begin!

These are some ideas on how to stimulate a child imagination. But I suggest you let them create, imagine, take risks, make decisions, solve problems. Summer play is a great opportunity to let all these knowledge flourish.

I truly hope that you feel more inspired. Just relax, enjoy the kids and let them to freely explore, and to just freely PLAY!

Teacher Appreciation Thank you to Whitney Mulwee, Lindsey Schoultz, Heather Ansari and Anamaria Gimpelson for a delicious end-of-year teacher appreciation lunch for the Preschool teachers and staff, and a big thank you to Chipotle on Roswell Road for donating all of the food. The Teacher Appreciation committee, led by Heather Ansari, Whitney Mulwee and Lindsey Schoultz, has truly spoiled the entire staff throughout the year. Our heartfelt thank you for all you have done for us!

Building Relationships Each year, the children in the Five/Six class make an effort to connect the youngest children of the Preschool with the oldest children. It’s a beautiful way to remind the children that they were once those tiny “littles” who we see at various times of the day. In years past, the Five/Six class sewed lovies for the younger class in hopes of establishing a relationship. So, we were delighted when Bradley asked to work on a sewing project for Chewbacca, a guinea pig who lives in a Two-year-old classroom.

We knew the value of this connection and got straight to work. We brainstormed ideas for what we should make, and the children decided that Chewbacca really needed a shirt. We selected the fabric, thread, and invited the littles to join us. The Five/Six students shared their sewing techniques, expertise, and

helpful hints in the most gentle, helpful, and encouraging way.

As the younger children grew more competent with sewing, so did their confidence. And thus, a beautiful friendship was born.

Of course we could not complete the project in one visit, so the older children decided to add the final touches before delivering their collaborative gift to Chewbacca and the Two-year-old class. When Ms. Tessa informed us that the

sleeves might not fit Chewy, the children quickly turned the shirt into a cape, added a button, and sewed on a giant “C.� Through the creation for Chewy, and the relationships established with the children in the Two-year-old classroom, the children in the Five/ Six classroom showed us their capabilities not only in sewing, but in problem solving, listening to others, planning, implementing the plan, and caring for others.
