Dear Parents, Often as parents, we don’t always know the right thing to say to children in challenging situations. Unfortunately, there is not one correct answer; there are numerous ways of handling these times. Children are constantly facing social situations that require them to negotiate with their peers. This is an ongoing process that lasts a lifetime. It is also natural for children to express a variety of emotions, some which cause us anxiety and embarrassment. Sometimes children express themselves in unacceptable ways. As parents, we provide children with appropriate words and model actions so that they can learn to express themselves. To become better communicators, parents can talk to children at eye level, use a calm voice and actively listen. Being on the floor with children and participating in their play can help develop trusting relationships that counterbalance moments of frustration. Miss Jane
