Dear Parents, About this time of year, the classroom community has become much more cohesive. Children are aware of the other adults and children in the community. Children at Peachtree are beginning to care for each other. Through all the daily work, children are acquiring essential life skills important for future success. In “Mind in the Making” , Ellen Galinsky outlines the five most important skills: focus and self control, perspective taking, communicating, making connections and the ability to engage in self directed learning. At Peachtree, the cooperative nature of projects and dramatic play in the classroom leads to many opportunities to practice these skills. Complex negotiations are occurring everyday! During play, children communicate their ideas through language and actions. In this type of learning environment that invites young children to play and explore with the emergent curriculum, the role of the teacher is critical.
