SERMON OUTLINE /
THE STRANGEST TOLL ROAD: LUKE 5:16
“Solitude is simply being with God and God alone.” // Ruth Haley Barton
LUKE 5 | How Jesus spent his time:
• Jesus invited students to get close (5:1-11)
• Jesus was available to those in need (5:12-16)
• Jesus taught in public (5:17-26)
• Jesus ate meals with others (5:27-32)
• And … Jesus spent time alone with God (5:16)
“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” // Luke 5:16
“I have discovered that all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own room.” // Blaise Pascal
We are more individualistic, yet we are unwilling to be by ourselves.
7 keys for solitude:
1. Be intentional
2. Be away
3. Be patient
4. Be expectant
5. Be prayerful and scriptural
6. Be wary
7. Be persistent
“Without solitude we remain victims of our society and continue to be entangled in the illusions of the false self. Modern life has become all about managing our compulsions.” // Henri Nouwen
“If you’re not good at solitude, fellowship will be dangerous.” // Dallas Willard
One of Jesus’ greatest invitations to his followers …
“And he said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.’”
Mark 6:31 ESV
