SERMON OUTLINE /

THE QUIET GAME: PSALM 62:1-7

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken. // Psalm 62:1-2

It is possible to live with the hope of God’s presence in any circumstance if we cultivate the way of our hearts with the practice of silence.

Four things you need to know about silence:

1. How loud things are today

• We like noise because it makes us feel alive.

• Our world is desperate for attention.

• We don’t realize how much we use sound to distract us.

2. What quiet does to you

• Exposes you

• Frees you

3. How to play the quiet game

• To minimize sound

• To stop speaking and be quiet (Why? Because the last point of surrender in our lives is usually our mouth)

4. Why silence is a sign of God’s presence

• “Speech is the organ of this present world. Silence is a mystery of the world to come.” // Isaac the Syrian (700 ad)

“Silence is frightening because it strips us as nothing else does, throwing us upon the stark realities of our life. It reminds us of death, which will cut us off from this world and leave only us and God. And in the quiet, what if there turns out to be very little between us and God.” // Dallas Willard

Experiments in silence:

• Take a walk without headphones

• Wake up early and be still

• One day of week listen to nothing in the car.

• Intentionally don’t have last word in a conversation/argument.

• Try one meal without screen or music.

• Silent retreat.

“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
