The Burnt Chef Project and Brigad join forces to host London hospitality mental health and well-being workshop Hospitality workers can learn how to handle the workload stresses of the festive season in a special one-off workshop hosted by The Burnt Chef Project CEO and Founder, Kris Hall. The workshop, which will be held at The Corner London City, Adler Street, on Monday 4th December from 9.30am - 12pm, has been jointly organised by The Burnt Chef Project and hospitality freelancing platform Brigad to raise awareness of the need for hospitality staff to manage their mental health and well-being. The event will start with a networking breakfast, followed by a stress workshop presented by Hall, which will enable attendees to understand how to identify, tackle, and manage workplace stress.

Hall said: “It's no secret the hospitality industry faces increased pressures throughout the festive season, with increased footfall, new menus, personal pressures of family, expense and missed time with loved ones can all add up. “Hospitality staff will work an average of 28 hours overtime at Christmas, which can lead to burnout, exhaustion, and ultimately mental health issues if not properly managed. It's vital we put structures in place to support our teams during this busy period. “This workshop gives the skills to cover how to spot stress, how to speak to your teams about mental health and ultimately support them, leading to better productivity and increased retention throughout the festive period and beyond.”

Mental health awareness is a continual issue for the industry, which will be compounded by the additional demands on workers to cope with the demands of the festive period. The Burnt Chef Project identified that 80 percent hospitality workers had experienced mental health issues within their career, while almost half would not feel comfortable talking about their health concerns with their colleagues.

Tickets for the workshop are priced at £10 with all proceeds going to The Burnt Chef Project. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite via this link.

New hotel in the historic Boswells department store The Store, Oxford, will launch in 2024. Located on Broad Street, in the heart of the city, The Store sits in the building of the historic department store and Oxford institution, Boswells. Boswells was one of the world’s oldest department stores, family-owned and much-loved by the local community. In the tradition of great British department stores, it was a place of discovery – a treasure trove of toys, cosmetics, fashion, household essentials, a haberdashery, well-known tearoom, and café.

Reimagined as a hotel, restaurant, rooftop bar, co-working bar, and spa, The Store, delivered by Reef Group and EQ Group, will present a labyrinth of spaces to discover and explore. The expert hospitality team at EQ are looking to delight guests with a sense of curiosity and wonder, reflecting the rich heritage of the building’s former life.

Arranged over seven floors, the interior design has been informed by the heritage of the two distinct buildings that make up The Store. Both buildings have a distinct architectural language that runs throughout the refurbished and extended spaces. These have been sensitively worked on by Urban R, Reef Groups’ team of architects and designers, with multi-purpose open-plan public spaces divided into different areas through elegant design choices – reminiscent of a department store filled with moments of joy that entice – and juxtaposed with intimate corners, and moments of escape.

The 101 rooms are spread across the two interconnected buildings, with six district design typologies, some with plush velvet headboards, panelled walls, and bold art deco features, others with leafy courtyard views, a muted palette and textures that comfort and cocoon. Bringing the rich tapestry of Oxford into the space, bespoke patterns and furniture echo the tiles and patterns of the rooftops or follow the line of the city’s “dreaming spires” to offer uninterrupted views. The Restaurant, Treadwell, will be ‘Untraditionally British’. Surrounded by incredible Oxfordshire countryside, the modern restaurant plays with sustainably sourced produce from local suppliers and brings unexpected multicultural influences to quintessentially British dishes. Expect Chicken Tikka Masala Pie, with gunpowder new potatoes and makhani jus; and The Store Cheeseburger, double smoked applewood cheddar, Cotswold chorizo & jalapeno jam, pickles, seasoned fries.
