Peach Days History

17th Annual Peach Days

This Labor Day weekend, September 4 & 5, will be the 17th annual celebration of Peach Days. However, Peach Days really began a long time ago. It is an integral part of Hurricane’s history. What began as a Fruit Festival in 1909 would evolve into the Peach Days and eventually the Washington County Fair. When the infamous Hurricane Canal began to flow the life blood of the valley – water – the farmers were able to begin planting. Water was available as early as 1906, but not until 1908 did it reach the South Fields. Several thousand Elberta peach trees were purchased and planted by the valley’s newly formed “commercial club” in 1908. They battled many hungry rabbits as they nurtured these baby trees along. Frank Barber, an experienced nursery man from Centerville, Utah came to Hurricane in January 1907 and began cracking peach pits which he planted in the spring. He organized the Hurricane Nursery Company (later the Dixie Fruit and Produce Company). Barber became involved in the commercial club and as the vice president organized the first “Fruit Festival”. This was held in 1909 in the Social Hall. The townspeople came and displayed the best fruits they had raised: Elberta peaches, grapes, and melons. The produce was judged and then those attending the “Fruit Festival” all helped eat the scrumptious display. The second year (1910) the Festival expanded and invited outsiders to share in Hurricane’s wealth. The Hurricane

residents and guests shared a meal, then moved to the Social Hall to view the fruit displays. It was described in the county news as fruit with “an extra superior quality”, and that “finer peaches were never seen anywhere”. Equal praise was given to the grapes, melons and other fruits (except for the apples which were a little wormy). After the judging and prizes, the crowd once again ate the delicious fruits. The day’s festivities were rounded off with a baseball game and a dance at the town square (now Heritage Park and Hurricane Community Center). From these humble beginnings the fruit festival grew into a two day event with roping contests, foot races, horse races, bronco riding, steer wrestling, baseball, dancing parties and cantatas. The fruit was still the center of the event and on the afternoon of the second day the melons were cut and everyone ate the fruit display. The Fruit Festival became the Hurricane Peach Days. The first Peach Days was held July 20, 1911. It was originally

17th Annual Peach Days called Elberta Days, and in 1915 the name was changed to Peach Days. Exciting things happened at Peach Days, like in 1916 when Mr. Fox brought his automobile to the celebration and charged 10 cents for a ride from the north end of Main Street to the flour mill and back! In 1929 Hurricane’s Peach Days had livestock and poultry exhibits, agricultural and horticultural displays, and various entertainments. It had achieved county fair status. At this time the county wanted to hold this fair annually and alternate among the towns of the county. The suggestion to hold it in St. George the next year was made, but the 1930 festival was again in Hurricane, and there it was to remain. In 1951 the name was changed to the Washington County Fair. County commissioners asked Hurricane to make this the county fair celebration because of its great success. The fair grew bigger and bigger. By the 1970s seed displays and agricultural exhibits were held in the old high school gym, and home arts exhibits were in the elementary multi-purpose room. During the 1980s it was expanded over a couple of city blocks. Home arts and baked and bottled goods were displayed in the new Hurricane High School’s gym and other parts of the building. Commercial booths lined the street along 100 south to Hurricane Elementary where in the old gym were seed and agricultural displays. Food booths were nestled along the street under the shade trees of the Elementary. At least three Continuous Entertainment stages were set up. One on the new High School Lawn, one among the booths along 100 south, and another on the lawn at the elementary. The carnival was set up over the years in various places (football or practice field, the street, playground, and a vacant lot), boxing was held at the American Legion Boxing Arena, and a rodeo at the American Legion Rodeo Grounds. Dances were held (a teenager’s dance and a country dance) at the old tennis courts, and the American Legion patio. The music could be heard all over the downtown and nearby residential area. Two parades were held: a children’s parade on Friday evening, and a general parade on Saturday morning. Remodeling at Hurricane High School caused the County Fair to be moved to the new Hurricane Middle School in the early 1990s. It was much more cramped and congested there and only lasted a few years before the new fair grounds were built at the Washington County Regional Park, and the Washington County Fair was moved to these new facilities.

984 West State Street Hurricane 1091 N Bluff St #1002 St. George

Hurricane residents missed the small town celebration that had grown so large and moved from the downtown part of their community. In 1999 the first board members (David Stirland, Tom Hirschi, Jarolyn Stout, and Vera Hirschi) organized committees and the first “new” Peach Days, which was held September 3rd and 4th, 1999. It was a huge success, with even its critics admitting it was a wonderful event. The community feeling of unity was back. Fond memories of days gone by were relived, and new memories were made. The goal of the board and committees has been to keep Peach Days a smaller hometown event without an over-flux of “commercial”. Peach Days was held in its old stomping grounds at the old HHS and Hurricane elementary grounds. The old High School was torn down in 2004, so the layout was changed and expanded to the Elementary building, but the events and displays are still much the same. Then in 2010 when Hurricane Elementary was moved to a new location, Hurricane City purchased the old school building and grounds, which is now the Hurricane Community Center. With the acquisition of the old “town square”, it allowed Peach Days to run for two full days as the school schedule no longer needed to be worked around. Whether you are a native to the area or a transplant, Peach Days will give you a great sense of community and appreciation for our pioneer heritage. You can walk through room in the Community Center or Fine Arts building and view various handiwork, garden and art displays. You may want to attend the craft show, or wander through pioneer corner and learn about the crafts and skills our pioneer ancestors passed down. Kids will enjoy the kiddy carnival, Pioneer Games and Candy Cannon. Be sure to grab a bite to eat at the food booths lining the street in front of the Community Center and relax under the shade as you listen to some local talent at the continuous entertainment. Don’t miss the parade Saturday morning or the old fashioned rodeo Saturday night or “Come See Our Valley” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for some great entertainment. Hurricane has a great heritage to celebrate. Be sure to celebrate with us this year at Hurricane Peach Days. (References for this article from: “A Little Oasis in the Desert” by W. Paul Reeve, 1996; and “Hurricane Then and Now” by Dell C Stout, 1999).

17th Annual Peach Days Pioneer Corner–Peach Days: A Celebration of our Heritage. This theme to our celebration we usually refer to as just Peach Days, sets the stage for the popular Pioneer Corner. In Pioneer Corner, our Heritage is shown very strongly. Many crafts and skills that our pioneer forefathers used as a part of their daily living, have been passed down and are used today both as hobbies, or in some cases as a basis for making a living. Pioneer Corner is patterned after the Southern Utah Folk Life Festival that used to be held in Zion every September. There you will find many of the same demonstrations in our Pioneer Corner. Take some time to wander through the tables under the shade on the Community Center lawn on Saturday, September 5. Stop and watch the demonstrations, ask questions, or even try your hand at many of the wonderful things available. Each demonstrator has generously donated his or her day to share with us the parts of the past that have been handed down to us today. Some booths will have samples of their items to taste such as delicious Dutch Oven potatoes, scones, or molasses candy. You won’t want to miss this fun part of Peach Days! Quilt Show–Be sure to check out the beautiful quilts on display in the Community Center Fine Arts Building. FIREWORKS at the close of Peach Days on Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. Fireworks will be launched near the Community Center, not the high school. Watch out for street closed signs. Violaters could be towed. Home Depot Kids Activity Center – Bring your kids and participate in the Home Depot Kids activity center located in the south lawn of the Fine Arts Auditorium on Saturday, September 5 after the parade. FREE, but first come first serve. Hurricane’s Got Talent – Calling all singers, dancers, ventriloquists, comedians, musicians, magicians and strangely talented people! 17th Annual Peach Days

Peach Days Rodeo

Saturday night at Peach Days holds one of the most small town elements of the event: the rodeo. This rodeo is fun to watch, and participate in. Some events take a little “know-how” and a horse – such as Barrel Racing, Team Roping , or the ever popular Hide Race. The Hide Race consists of a rider who drags a hide down the arena and makes a turn around a barrel to go back. Waiting is a “rider” for the hide. As the turn is made, the hide rider jumps aboard and hangs tight for a sometimes rough and always dusty ride back “home”. It is truly a highlight of the evening! Steer riding is for those age 8 – 16 or mutton bustin’ for age 7 and under. These events require an entry form and fee in advance (if the event is not full you can still sign up at the rodeo between 5 and 6 pm that night.) At the rodeo kids can join in with no fee in the chicken and pig chase. Just pay your admission and show your “stamped” hand! The spectators seem to grow each year because it is such a fun, and entertaining small town rodeo. This rodeo is a bargain for families: only $3 per person or $15 for families. If you have not been before, you won’t want to miss out. If you have been – you know of the good time waiting to be had. Hope to you see you at the Peach Days Rodeo! TOOLS

Pioneer Corner

Peach Days is a celebration of our Heritage – and at Pioneer Corner we do just that. Each year we enjoy artisans at work sharing with us the crafts and skills that have been passed down from pioneer ancestors that are used today both as hobbies and in some cases as a basis for making a living. Take some time to wander through the tables under the shade of the east side of the community center lawn on Saturday. You can watch demonstrations, try your hand at many of the demos, and even sample some of the items. Quilting, weaving, mountain men skills, and

14

blacksmithing are among the many Pioneer Corner demonstrations. A big favorite is to watch the horseshoeing and the forging of the horseshoes. Samples of Dutch Oven potatoes and scones are available to all, as well as a taste of homemade molasses candy. You won’t want to miss this fun part of Peach Days. Take a stroll through the past and be sure to visit Pioneer Corner!

This year new parking opens up south of the community center where the city has purchased a parcel of land to add parking spots. But the best part of parking at Peach Days is the shuttles! You can park on the side streets, Hurricane High School, the Red Brick Church (300S 100 W) or businesses on state or main streets (per posted signs), and catch a ride on the shuttles to the community Center. These shuttles are free and travel up and down the roads throughout the celebration. You can park anywhere and have curbside delivery! Watch for a shuttle driver, and catch a ride to Peach Days!

Historic Hurricane Canal trek Every year one of the less known events of Peach Days is the Historic Hurricane Canal Pioneer Trek. There is a choice of three hikes that you and your family can join in on, and tailor fit it to your level of ability. Meet at Heritage Park at 6:30 am for a moderate hike (4.5 miles) or the more strenuous one (5.7 miles). If you want to take it easy meet at the Bowery Trail Head at 8:00 am for a 1.4 mile hike. Hurricane Canal Trail Shirts are given out at the early hike. These hikes let you see the old Hurricane Canal that many of our residents remember floating down in the hot summer days gone by. This canal was the way water was delivered to our valley from the Virgin River. The head of the canal is upstream and allowed the residents to get water on the Hurricane bench before the river dropped below the valley floor. Without the canal there would be no Hurricane. These hikes are a great way to learn about and appreciate our wonderful Hurricane Valley Heritage.

17th Annual Peach Days

Grand Marshalls:

Waldo and Sybil Hirschi

Waldo and Sybil Hirschi are well known in the Hurricane Valley for their many decades of service to their hometown and its occupants. Although being named “Grand Marshals” for the 2015 Peach Days was “not our idea,” say the Hirschi’s, both Waldo and Sybil say they are happy to be part of the celebration. Waldo and Sybil actually grew up living just two and a half blocks from each other in Hurricane, but say they never really noticed each other until it came time to attend Dixie College. This year they celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary! Waldo’s story begins in 1927 when he was born to Claudius and Anna Workman Hirschi at the family home on 180 West 400 South. Named Junius Waldo, he was the youngest of four children. Waldo descends from a long line of pioneers on both sides of the family and claims lineage to one of the first six original families that settled Hurricane in 1906. Waldo grew up during the Great Depression and learned to work hard and care for others. HIs father owned a ranch on the Big Plains, which Waldo enjoyed visiting and working on with his Dad and brother, Merlin. Waldo enjoyed the cattle drives and wood hauling expeditions and even now continues to visit the ranch every week. Waldo was also a rugged, fearless kid who wasn’t afraid to try new things. The doctor in town got to know Waldo rather well after treating him for his many childhood injuries. He enjoyed sports and excelled on the high school football and basketball teams. In order to earn some spending money, Waldo usually had a profitable agricultural studies project going, such as selling a case of 30 dozen eggs each week from his more than 250 laying hens and raising steers to sell. He also picked fruit, shocked beets and hauled hay for local farmers. One summer following his junior year, Waldo earned better pay by laying power lines for the railroad in Nevada. World War II raged on during all of Waldo’s high school years and rationing was part of life. Young men like Waldo patched up and tinkered with the old cars available to keep them running since no new cars were being sold to civilians. By the time he was 17, Waldo and his buddies decided to join the Navy. He spent the better part a year and a half working in a naval repair yard near San Diego before being discharged. Once home in Hurricane, Waldo enrolled at Dixie College for fall semester classes and found himself riding to class in a wood-paneled Ford station wagon owned by the college. A fellow passenger was Sybil Isom. By the time December rolled around, Waldo and Sybil had grown rather fond of each other.

20

The following September, Waldo and Sybil were married and starting life out together. Waldo finished attending Dixie College and then studied one year at the L.D.S. Business College in Salt Lake City before returning to Hurricane to accept a position at State Bank of Hurricane. Sybil says her husband “was a very conscientious banker who took his job seriously.” State Bank of Hurricane was eventually bought out by Zions Bank and Waldo was able to retire after 34 years on the job. Although she wasn’t born in Hurricane, Sybil says she “got here as fast as I could.” Her parents, Bernard and Ruth Viola Holm Isom, met and married in Idaho, where Sybil was born in 1928. By the time Sybil was five years old her parents had decided to move back to Hurricane, which Bernard’s family had also helped settle in 1906. Growing up in Hurricane was fun, Sybil says, adding everyone she knew then was poor and didn’t know it. Her father was a fruit farmer, which gave the family ample opportunities to work. Many of the young people in Hurricane found employment with Mr. Isom, sorting fruit and packing it for sale. Sybil was extremely ill as a child from a ruptured appendix and very nearly died from the experience. She was operated on five times and says she “has the scars to show it.” It took months for Sybil to regain her health and even her hair since it had fallen out from a high fever. Sybil loved school and enjoyed the Friday night open air dances, ball games and her many high school friends. Graduation was a sad day for Sybil, who knew her life would never be the same again. That summer she and a friend went to Cedar City to work at a cafe. Not long after that, Sybil began attending Dixie College, living at home and riding to class in a station wagon provided by the college. One of her seat mates was Waldo Hirschi. continued on page 24

Grand Marshalls:

Weldon and Vivien Heaton

Weldon Heaton was born at the family home in Hurricane in 1921 to Joseph and Amelia Carroll Heaton, the youngest of 10 children. Home was a happy place with a fun-to-be-with father and warm and loving mother. Weldon has always loved animals, particularly horses, and communicates with them in ways most people can’t understand. As a teenager, Weldon learned how to break or train horses, a task that has provided many hours of enjoyment over the years as well as a way to supplement his income. While Weldon wasn’t overly fond of the academic side of school, he enjoyed the social amenities very much. He was naturally shy, good natured and patient with others. Ballroom dancing was an important activity in town and Weldon became an enthusiastic dancer. After graduating from high school, Weldon enrolled at Dixie College. He joined the National Guard to help meet college expenses and was inducted into the Army in March of 1941. World War II began for Weldon at a banquet in Santa Barbara, California, and ended with singing and dancing in the streets of Paris. He was assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers and helped build military construction projects up and down the west coast, in England and France. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant in charge of a platoon and learned how to deal with many kinds of problems. He was discharged in October of 1945 and headed back to Hurricane by way of France, New York City and Chicago. As expected, one of Weldon’s big priorities when he got home was to go dancing. At his first dance he discovered a pretty girl he hadn’t noticed before: Vivien Sullivan. She seemed to be very good at keeping in step with him. They were married in the St. George LDS Temple in June of 1946. Although Weldon would have loved working as a rancher, he didn’t own a ranch and couldn’t afford to buy one. So he turned to more practical pursuits. He helped

construct homes, worked at the Hurricane Co-op and became a wholesale milk delivery man in Wyoming. While business was good, they were living far from Hurricane and wanted to return home. Later on, Weldon would work for Western Gold of Silver Reef, using his army experience with explosives. He joined the Utah State Road Department and stayed employed there until his retirement at age 65. Vivien Sullivan Heaton was born in 1923 to Annie Maria “Lyle” Olsen and William D. Sullivan Jr. in Cedar City, the eighth of 11 children. She lived on the family farm about two miles west of Hurricane until she was six years old and recalls playing for hours outside with her cousin who lived on the farm next door. When the Great Depression struck in 1929, the family lost their farm and home. The family moved to a house in Hurricane that also served as the local telephone office. Vivien earned spending money by running telephone messages to call recipients, who would then come to the continued on page 24

house and have the operator retrieve the caller on the line. Vivien loved reading and enjoyed her school years. After graduating, she went to Henderson, Nevada, to work in the war plants that produced magnesium. Following a year there, she moved to Cedar City where she worked as a nurse’s aide at the hospital. Later, Vivien and two of her girlfriends moved to California to seek jobs. This was during World War II when jobs revolved around the war effort. She returned home in the spring of 1945 and found herself working at the co-op grocery store in town. One night, Vivien and her sister, Toni, went to a dance and that’s where she saw a fellow by the name of Weldon Heaton. It was the first time they had really noticed each other, even though they had grown up just two blocks apart much of their lives. They danced and he asked to take Vivien home afterward. “We’ve been going together ever since,” Vivien says. Weldon and Vivien are the parents of six children, two boys and four girls. They have 28 grandchildren and 58 great grandchildren. Their lives are centered in their family. They have enjoyed busy lives as active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many capacities. They have also served the community

they love. They have been generous in giving of their time and talents in community organizations and events throughout their lives. Vivien and Weldon are quick to point out the benefits of having the other for a spouse. “He’s been a really good man, a hard worker, never idle,” says Vivien. “He loves his kids. He’s a master gardener and loves to have extra so we can give it away.” Vivien, on the other hand, has been the consummate mother, Weldon says. “She is so good with the kids, she taught them so many things and loves them,” he added. Their youngest daughter, Tori, says her parents provided a supportive, loving environment to grow up in. “We always knew that we were loved. We always had what we needed. I think I am really blessed to have the parents I do,” she says. Weldon sums up his feelings for growing up in Hurricane and raising his family here by recalling the time he spent as a young man in the military. “As I went into the National Guard in World War II and traveled to far countries, I saw the way some others lived and spoke,” he says. “I became very thankful for the things I was taught in my home and little community.”

Hirschi Grand Marshalls continued

Life as a married couple was grand on Waldo’s beginning bank salary of $125 a month. “Spending less than you earn” was a value taught by Waldo’s father, and he took it to heart. Waldo and Sybil had one child, Douglas, whom they felt lucky to have after Sybil’s health scare as a child. Over the years, Waldo and Doug have enjoyed working on the family ranch together, just like Waldo did with his father. When Doug retired from the National Park Service, he and his wife, Jan, moved home and built a house on the Big Plains, where he continues to help his dad with the ranch. Waldo joined the Hurricane Lions Club when he first moved back home after attending business college in Salt Lake City. He’s been an active member ever since, nearly 66 years strong. He became a member of the American Legion as soon as he got out of the Navy and has been a loyal member of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Waldo served one four-year term as a Hurricane City Council member and volunteered for 20 years as secretary of the Washington County Fair Board.

Buenos Amigos Civic Club, which has spearheaded many projects that benefit Hurricane City, the local schools, students and residents. Sybil also volunteered her time with the Washington County Fair by serving as the chairperson for “almost everything” at one time or another, she says. Both Waldo and Sybil have been active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and believe their lives are “so much better” than they would have been without the Church. “We are grateful for our pioneer heritage and to the early saints who sacrificed so much so that we could enjoy such a good way of life here in this valley and in the great land of America,” Sybil says. Service, the Hirschi’s say, has always been an important part of their lives. “We enjoyed all of it. It was the right thing to do,” Sybil says. “We’ve made lifelong friends.” Waldo very eloquently sums up his feelings about growing older in his hometown of Hurricane: “The older you get, the more home is the place to be.”

Sybil’s charitable endeavors have included a nearly 66-year membership in the American Legion Auxiliary and years of active duty as a Lady Lions Club member. She has participated for more than 30 years as a member of the

17th Annual Peach Days The Stirland family is thrilled to be part of the Peach Days tradition. Over 50 year ago, Gordon & Polly Stirland taught their children to love music and dance. The sound of musical instruments, singing and tap shoes could be heard from early morning until late at night in their home. This wonderful heritage has been passed on to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Come and join the entire family Saturday at 6:00 for an evening of old favorites and a whole lot of fun. Casey is excited to be performing Classic Country at Peach Days once again. It is has turned into a tradition for the Lofthouse family as well as many members of the community. Casey was born and raised in Paradise, Utah but now considers Hurricane his adopted home town. He has spent many years performing throughout Utah and enjoys the opportunity to support all types of performers. His love of the community is evident through his hours of public service, usually by sharing his many talents. One of the Highlights of his year was the opportunity to perform with Bar G Wranglers at Ebenezers Barn and Grill. Casey owns and operates Casey’s Auto Repair as well as Lofthouse Honey here in Hurricane. If you love Classic Country he would love to see you at Peach Days again this year. His performances will be Friday from 5-6pm on the Main Stage as well as Saturday 1-1:30pm on the West Stage. He will also have the opportunity to MC part of the Non Stop entertainment. If you would like to find out more information about Casey’s upcoming performances, please check out www.reverbnation.com/caseylofthouse.

Classic Country has been making good “old” country music in and around Southern Utah for the past 10 years. Utah’s Premier Country Dance Band has headlined at the OCTanner Amphitheater in Springdale, the Washington County Fair, Art’s Festival, the Dixie Roundup, Utah’s Sheriff’s Assoc. annual BBQ and the Western Legends Roundup in the “old Barn” in Kanab, Utah. This awesome country band specializes in the music of Haggard, Jones, Waylon, Willie and many more great country artists. This group is composed of Scott Emmet on lead guitar and vocals, Frank Melton on rhythm guitar and vocals, Steve Adam on drums and vocals, Sue Melton on backup vocals and Garn Hunnington on bass guitar. We are so pleased to be playing again at the Peach Festival. Whether you sit a spell or get up and dance, this band will have your toes tapping and put a grin on your face. To book Classic Country call 435-656-4771.

Jarolyn Stout and Family performs in many community and church events throughout the year. Jarolyn Stout, married to Collin, has performed her entire life with her mother Carolyn Ballard Shelley. As Jarolyn's eight children came along, they joined the act. Shantel, Trinity, Chelsea, Jacob, Summer, Lucas and Heather will all join in the performance this year. The Stouts accompany themselves on guitars, banjo and the fiddle, and will sing a variety of country and easy listening numbers both as a group and solos. Way Off Broads is a group of local ladies who love to sing “for fun”. The group includes Marla Gledhill, Alicelyn Jaques, Tylia Jackman, Wanda Despain, June Jeffery, and Sheri Beatty. The name was to be the stage name for the group’s initial “Broadway Magic” performance in 2008, and is descriptive of the nature of their music and outlook on life. Known for music that is lighthearted and fun, they focus on fun, crazy songs, and good harmony. There are always a few surprises when these ladies get together. Jupiter, returning for their fourth appearance at Peach Days, began as a songwriting endeavor to blend melodic hooks, introspective lyrics and trance rhythms into songs that are both catchy and meaningful. Its five members (located in various towns across Utah) are drawn from diverse backgrounds, ranging from classic rock to opera; and from the self-taught to the collegiate. Each brings their own perspectives, talents, and experiences to the mix. They have been performing around the intermountain west for several years now, and are pleased to be returning to Peach Days.

Vocal students of Bonnie LeBaron will be performing again this year on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. on the East lawn stage. Bonnie has been teaching vocal and piano students for many years, and more recently Let's Play Music students. The program this year will include pop & musical theater tunes and should please listeners.

The Lawn Darts is Southern Utah’s premier party band. This is not a typical bar band. This is not a bar band at all, but a high octane classic rock and original band who has opened for Styx, Kansas, The Beach Boys and has headlined at the OC Tanner Amphitheater, Washington County Fair and St. George First Night. Driving the band at the front is the powerful voice of Travis Brown. Supplying the back bone of the band is the super tight rhythm section with Jeff Tuscano on Bass and Steve Gustaveson on Drums. The wing men are Lisle Crowley on guitar and Don Shelline on keyboard, flute, various percussion paraphernalia and vocals. The band has an extremely high level of musicianship, but remember, their goal is a good time for everyone involved. To book The Lawn Darts call 435-619-5193 or e mail lcrowley@infowest.com.

The Fabulous Honky Tonk Heroes present the hits of the icons of “Classic Country” and their playlist is filled with songs from George Strait, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Buck Owens, and many more of country’s favorite artists. The Heroes are designed for the dancers and perform a nice mix of shuffles, swings, line dances, two-steps, with an occasional slow dance or waltz to keep everybody on the dance floor. They present the songs the way you heard them on the radio, adding the “Rockabilly” sounds of Hank Sr., Elvis Presley, Dwight Yoakam, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, and Marty Stuart. They will often tease audiences a little too with southern rock tunes from Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, CCR, or The Kentucky Headhunters or The Mavericks. The core of the group consists of Billy Hammers on electric bass, “Dutch Workman” on the drum kit, Jim Sevy on electric lead guitar and harmony vocals, with country singer-songwriter Rich Panessa on lead vocals, rhythm acoustic guitar, and adding a hatful of his originals.

Jeri Churchill, and I do "Jeri's Parodies" Comedy songs for all occasions. I write and sing parodies that poke fun at the things that life throws at us women who are of a "certain age". Such as memory loss, weight gain, housework, husbands, etc...Because life is a lot easier when you can laugh at it! Carolyn Murset is a singer/ songwriter who has lived in the Hurricane Valley with her husband and their five children since 1983. She has produced two CD's of her original music, "People Change" and "He Is My Song", and is currently working on a third CD, "My Side of the Fence." She is currently a member of John Houston's Gospel Choir, and a past member of the Evening Sunrise band. She plays guitar and mandolin.

After a chance meeting at a superhero convention, Chauncey and the Chamberlains discovered that their voices were a great match. Their repertoire focuses on crowd pleasers ranging from Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Eric Clapton, to KT Tunstall. Their common interests are fighting crime, and happy music.

The Forresters is an Indie/Alternative rock band whose members grew up in southern Utah and are currently attending Hurricane High School. The members consist of Jefferson Bjarnson (vocals, lead guitar), Jaxton Winder (rhythm guitar), Braydon Buell (bass) and Kory Adams (drums). The Forresters’ sources of inspiration come from bands such as Imagine Dragons, Two Door Cinema Club, and Led Zeppelin. They have been together for almost two years and enjoy entertaining and influencing their crowds while having fun making music together. Red Sand Bluegrass Band is a Folk/Bluegrass band with a diverse playlist covering their versions of songs from Nickel Creek, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Hank Williams, Earl Scruggs, the Beatles etc. At this performance listeners become participants if they’d like. Pick up a washboard, set of spoons, saw and play along. The group is made up of Keith Behunin on Banjo, Idie Behunin on bass, Sean Sevy on Fiddle and vocals, Melissa Sevy on vocals and an occasional penny whistle and Kent Sevy on Mandolin and vocals. They like to embellish traditional songs with their own harmonies and instrumentation. They’re all about having fun with the audience.

The Dixie Utah Old Time Fiddlers are dedicated to preserving old time music. We use only acoustic instruments. We perform at all kinds of venues. We hold our jams at Cherokee Springs RV. club house in Washington the 2nd and 4th Wed. of every month and welcome new talent.

The Hubcaps are based out of St. George, Utah, and have been entertaining for weddings, dances, parties, and other events since 2001. Their repertoire is very versatile and ranges from all mainstream hits from the 40s to today's top 10, although they specialize in classic rock and roll from the 50s to the 80s. The band consists of Gary Ford (vocals & guitar), Kent Sevy (vocals & keyboard), Devon Archer (vocals & lead guitar), Sean Sevy (vocals & bass), and Brant Jones (drums).

Raven Cain has become well known all over Southern Utah. He won the 2014 Country Music Showdown, and has been touching peoples lives all over the United States with his music in ways that even surprises him. Raven's unique songs have stood out amongst the endless list of todays singers who all tend to sound alike. Raven pushes the boundaries of music and seams to have no limits on what he can do. His songs are an expression of who he is, and that's what makes it REAL. Raven doesn’t just write songs, he shares from the heart and creates a soundtrack to his life. He often says that the folks that love his music are made up of his friends, not fans. The Raven Cain Band is: Raven Cain, Jake Ryan Shepard, Skatt and Brando Clove.

Kia has been singing her whole life, but she started taking it seriously after her first competition in second grade. She is lucky to have a wonderful family who have always supported her love of music and performing. This is her eighth year performing at Peach Days. She will be performing at 2:30 on the Main Stage on Friday."

The Rok Dox is a group of mostly doctors who have been playing classic rock and roll for over twelve years. The group initially got together at the insistence of the doctors’ wives to perform at an annual fund-raiser for various community causes. Since then, they have played at most of the area venues including the Electric Theater, First Night, the Arts Festival, the County Fair, Huntsman Senior Games, various Sun River events and the St. George Marathon. They entertained at the Olympic Torch Party at Stephen Wade Auto in February 2002. They started to write their own music and released their first CD, “Red Dirt,” in 2004. The group is composed of: Paul Doxey, M.D., an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon (guitar), John Davis, M.D., a radiologist (percussion and vocals), Steve Coleman, EMT (bass guitar and vocals), Bob Ruesch (keyboards), Jason Ahee, M.D., an ophthalmologist (guitar and vocals) and John Miner, M.D., an anesthesiologist (lead vocals). The Rok Dox repertoire of classic hits includes numbers from the Beatles, Santana, Steve Miller, Bachman-Turner, Led Zepplin, Steppenwolf, the Eagles, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bon Jovi, Robert Palmer, Eric Clapton, Aerosmith and many other artists. The song selections are upbeat and lively - the kind of music that makes people want to get up and dance! It is hard to tell who is having more fun, the audience or the “Dox.”

Dorothy Frazier, David Segler Charles Reeve, and Zach Forsyth all grew up and live here in LaVerkin, and Hurricane. Dorothy learned to play her “squeeze box” in her youth. The past few years Dorothy has played as David and Tana Segler have sang songs at a variety of events. Through the past few years they have been joined with Charles Reeve and his son in law Zach Forsyth. Both excellent guitar players. The group has been blessed to have Cheryl Reeve and Shella Forsyth sing a few songs here at Peach Days. The entire group has some deep rooted heritage in both Hurricane and LaVerkin.
