Exceptional care close to home
Keeping excellent care close to home is at the center of our work at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart. This care is possible because of the highly trained and compassionate caregivers serving our patients. To retain this top-level talent, the Oregon Institute for Nursing Excellence is attracting, connecting and retaining new graduates and seasoned nursing experts through professional development opportunities at PeaceHealth.
Funded entirely by philanthropy, the Oregon Institute for Nursing Excellence is an investment in our shared future. It expands access to patient care, benefits nurses and families and accelerates our region’s health and economy. PeaceHealth is proud to have more than 2,000 nurses caring for our Oregon communities. Your support and generosity make a positive impact on our nurses which directly impacts patient care.
Thank you for your commitment to growing clinical expertise and ensuring our nursing staff can provide the highest level of quality care in our community through the Oregon Institute of Nursing Excellence and other initiatives at PeaceHealth.
— Heather Wall, MSN, RN, VP of Patient Care Operations and Chief Nursing Officer, Oregon Network
The institute implements evidence-based approaches to support nurses in growing both their careers and the care they provide. Your investment helps nurses in several ways including:
> Connecting nurses with other healthcare providers across the nation to improve coordinated care throughout a patient’s journey.
> Sharing classes, conferences and certifications with nurses to advance their careers and elevate patient care.
> Bringing in and keeping talented nurses through job shadowing, supporting nurse fellows and residents, and educating high schoolers on nurse practices.
Funded entirely by your philanthropic support, the Oregon Institute for Nursing Excellence is paving the way for more lives changed and more lives saved.
“ During my family’s most crucial time they cared for us like we were family. I am a huge supporter, and truly grateful we have a local hospital with a first-class medical team.”
— Grateful patient at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart
Caregivers from across PeaceHealth in Oregon participate in Schwartz Rounds. Schwartz Rounds is a nationally recognized program that provides a safe place for caregivers and providers to process challenging clinical, social and emotional issues in caring for patients and families. The goal of the Schwartz Rounds is for caregivers to meet regularly to express their thoughts openly about topics including barriers to care, overcoming bias, restoring connection with patients and specialized patient care scenarios.
Because of your support, we are able to offer this important program to all providers and caregivers. You are helping nurses gain the support they need to better care for themselves and our patients.
505 nurses were promoted last year through the Professional Nurse Advancement Program.
124 nurse residents graduated from PeaceHealth Sacred Heart’s Nurse Residency Program from January 2023-March 2024.
Over $1.4 million in philanthropic support was utilized for the Institute for Nursing Excellence from July 2023-May 2024.
Your dedication to the health of our community is evident with every gift you make.
Thanks to your support, the staff at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart grew to over 3,500 employees and more than 800 medical staff last year, which increased and sustained our capacity to care for our community. With the increase in staffing, providing growth and leadership opportunities is more important than ever. This year, the focus was on facilitating connection and giving support to our caregivers though the Nurse Residency Program and the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Program.
> The Nurse Residency Program focuses on the recruitment and retention of first-year nurses through education, experience, mentorship and team building. In addition, this high-engagement program includes advanced simulation training equipment, software and specialty care curriculums. Because of your support, the program is already showing remarkable success by retaining 93% of participants in its first year, a number that has since increased to 95%. This achievement speaks volumes about the vital impact of your giving.
“ We want to focus on elevating nurse practice and giving them the resources that they need to do excellent work, to be able to share their opinion and their real-life experiences in order to take better care of our patients.”
— Jeannette Styles, Registered Nurse at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart
> A Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Program was started to better support our nurses in moments of heightened stress and trauma. This program gives nurses psychological first aid resources as they navigate trauma in the hospital. Through your giving, nurses are better equipped to respond and decrease tension in situations where patients need quick medical help. Thank you for investing in leadership, innovation and education for our nurses. With the partnership of generous supporters like you, we are growing the talents of our dedicated nurses so they can better care for our community.
