elcome to the 6th Annual Prairie Distinction Bull Sale. This year we welcome Cline Cattle Co. as a new consignor, and they have offered a good solid set of bulls from their quality herd. All six of the consignors have once again put bulls in from the top of their bull pens to show what they have. There are bulls here that will work in all segments of the industry, which is proven by the many repeat customers we have had in the past. There are white, tan and red factor bulls with quality in all colours. From bulls that would work in the heifer pen to power bulls that will give you as much performance as you would like, they are here. These breeders are here for the long haul and will work to provide you with bulls that will last. The two-year old bulls in the sale are designed to be that and are not leftovers. Once again this past fall we saw the premium paid for the Charcross calves as consistently high as it has ever been in the auction markets. Crossbreeding is essential to maximize profits in the cattle business and these bulls will give you the added performance, meat and hair that will put your calves in the top cut pen come sale time. Feel free to give the consignors a call or stop and have a visit with them before sale day if you want a little extra time to meet the breeders and see their operations. Also, this year the sale will be broadcast live on the internet at By Livestock Online. If you can’t make the sale you can bid online. Please register early if you are going to take advantage of this service. Just go to www.bylivestock.com and follow the prompts. Please come early sale day and enjoy viewing the bulls, a complimentary lunch and hospitality before and after. If Jon, Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you a bull that is right for your program and make your bull buying experience a pleasant one. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By Jon Wright

41G is a very stout, deep, quiet bull with great feet and big testicles. He will add performance, meat and muscle. One of the most impressive bulls we have raised. 41G is in the top 2% of the breed for weaning and yearling EPDs. His dam is one of our best cows and has sons working for Wayne Riglin, Dean Sykes and daughters for Steppler Charolais, DRD Charolais and ourselves. The only reason this guy is in the sale is that we kept a Sundance son two years ago. He could hit a “grandslam” in your herd. Retaining 1/4 semen interest.

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb. may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weight more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease.

Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

JOHNSTON CHAROLAIS • Lots 15-22 Welcome all! Well, 2019 in review. Our drought finally broke a week before threshing, then the skies opened which lead to a challenging harvest. Combines sat idle for days on end, and then a Thanksgiving blizzard left 45 plus cm of snow. Mother Nature reminding farmers she is ultimately in control. Wishing all prairie farmers a change to a more normal weather pattern, less stress, and a return to solvency. Now onto the bulls! The same program as years past. Most Red Angus cows will weigh between 12-1600 lb, expected calf weight range 84 to 112 lb. 4.
