What a Spring Bull Sale Season!

It’s safe to say this spring’s bull sale season was one for the books. Strong sales, exceptional quality, tremendous prices, and outstanding buyer support were seen at nearly every sale across the country. The demand for Charolais bulls continues to rise, with more producers making the switch. Growthy, high-performance bulls were in high demand, and we also saw a noticeable uptick in interest for calving ease and heifer bull types— an encouraging trend for the breed. This year, nine more sales were reported compared to 2024, with total gross sales topping last year by over $5.8 million. Late-spring cull prices stayed strong, with some larger bulls bringing over $6,000, motivating

more producers to take advantage of the market and invest in new herd bulls. Meanwhile, the calf market appears to be holding steady—if not strengthening—as we head into green grass season.

In this issue, you’ll find the Spring Bull Sale Chart, now featuring those additional five sales and this year’s strong results.

Looking ahead, the Canadian Charolais Association AGM is set for June in Quebec City, alongside the Friends of Canadian Charolais Foundation Sale and the Breeders’ School. Candice and I are looking forward to heading east—we hope to connect with as many of you as possible and tour herds throughout Quebec and the Maritimes.

Speaking of Quebec don’t miss the profile on Phil Hardy from Pee-Vee Charolais—a great read and a great opportunity to learn more about one

Ranch Review

of the key players in the region.

Later this summer, the Saskatchewan Charolais Association and the Sask Royal Sale will be hosted at Dakota Dunes Resort, and in July, CCYA heads to Stettler, AB, alongside the Alberta Charolais Association Summer Tour.

As seeding season ramps up, we wish everyone safety, success, and enough moisture to keep the grass growing.

Justin and I will be touring throughout the summer, so if you’re looking to update your marketing photos for next spring’s bull sale catalogues or the 59th Annual Herd Sire Edition, now’s the time to book a visit. Summer is a great season for cattle photos. Give Justin or myself a call early—we’re aiming to make it into as many yards as we can.

Have a great day Robbie

What

do we do with all that data

Pedigree

Once a calf is newly entered into the system, the pedigree is recorded. If the calf is registered this pedigree will appear in the online searches and we can provide an official pedigree. The animal is also sent to the joint North American EPD evaluation.

THE Data

As growth/performance data is added, the CCA system automatically updates and computes adjusted weights as well as in herd ranks and indexes for the various traits. 9 times per year the data is sent to the joint North American EPD evaluation.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound data that is collected through a certified technician and lab is automatically returned to the CCA where it is imported into the system and adjusted values, in herd ranks and indexes are computed and provided back to the member. For members choosing to use the less accurate chute side ultrasound, results are manually formatted so that they can be imported to the CCA system and adjusted values, as well as in herd ranks and indexes are computed. Ultrasound results are sent to the Joint North American EPD evaluation 9 times per year.

DNA

There are a variety of DNA tests that members can order. Parentage testing (sire verification, dam verification, parentage verification) results are used to confirm and if necessary update pedigree information. High Density (100K) test results are used for parentage, but are also formatted and submitted to the Joint North American EPD evaluation, where they provide

valuable information for the calculation of EPD on tested animals, essentially adding data equivalent to a full calf crop for the tested animal. Genetic Evaluation

Joint evaluations are conducted for release in January, February, March, April, May, September, October, November, December. Data is pulled from the CCA dataset roughly 3 weeks before the end of each preceding month. At this time, data is cross-referenced with animals from the AICA and all pedigrees are matched up. Additionally, high density DNA test results are pulled and sent for imputation. Once the data is received by the evaluation, the next steps are formatting and editing. While we send all of the data to evaluation, some will be edited out for a variety of reasons. Pedigree errors are edited out. For example, a male animal is recorded as a dam, or a birthdate of a calf is before the birthdate of its’ sire.

Performance errors are also edited. Examples, could be extreme or unrealistic weights, such as a 23 pound birthweight, or 2000 pound weaning weight. Additional, edits will include things such as single animal contemporary groups, or incorrect ultrasound information. Even if an animal has its performance data edited, the pedigree can remain in the EPD evaluation.

Finally the DNA information is also cleaned and edited. DNA information may result in disqualified pedigree information or the DNA information may not have a high enough read rate (quality of test) to have it be used in the evaluation.

Once the data has cleared edits, then the evaluation is conducted by AGI and EPD are calculated for the various traits.

EPD

After the math is done, the EPD and various reports are returned and the results are reviewed for accuracy and potential errors. If the EPD clear these hurdles, then they are loaded into each respective registry system (CCA/AICA) and new statistics are calculated and posted. This includes things like breed averages and percentile ranks.

Novel Data/Research

In the background of all of this is the collection and reporting of novel data and research work ongoing. This could include new traits such as calf vigour, feet and leg scores and

udder scoring. This data may seem like it does not receive an immediate response such as in herd ranks and indexes and this is true. Data collection is often the first step in the process. Once a critical mass of data is obtained by the membership, then scientists and other personnel can work with the data to determine the best way to analyse and present new information that may be contained within. A good example of this type of work would be the Terminal Sire Index that has recently been added to the suite of information presented by Charolais. Other traits being worked on include docility and feed intake.

This is a brief summary of what happens to your Charolais data and the approximate calendar of events throughout the year. Regular performance reporting happens almost instantaneously with the online system, and the EPD are updated 9 times per year in cooperation with AICA. This data and the resulting reporting are the heartbeat of the Association and genetic improvement of the breed. It is a testament to the breeders that work to collect and submit important trait data that helps the breed to move forward and engage the commercial industry.

OBITUARY

Conrad Mark Wilgenbusch was born May 7, 1983, in Weyburn, Saskatchewan to John & Brenda Wilgenbusch and passed away on January 20, 2025, at Pilgrims Hospice in Edmonton, Alberta.

Spring Updates and Priorities for CCA

The start of my term as president comes during an odd combination of events. Purebred producers are done with calving and bull sales and are submitting pedigree transfers and registration paperwork while commercial producers are in the middle of calving. It’s a great time of year to be on a farm or ranch. Looking at my CCA commitments, a federal election campaign is underway. While this would traditionally be a quieter time for CCA, my calendar quickly filled up with invitations to attend meetings in Washington, D.C. and with key stakeholders in Canada as we continue to try and navigate the uncertainty and confusion about tariffs imposed by the United States.

Canada’s beef industry is heavily reliant on exports which makes it crucial for CCA to dedicate attention to maintaining market access. That is not an easy task, but there are a couple of silver linings for us. First is that we as beef producers are not in this situation alone. The entire world is impacted and nearly all Canadian industries and businesses are impacted. The second positive element is that we have the National Beef Strategy, developed by the National Beef Advisors, to guide our response. The Strategy helps assure consistent messaging among the entire Canadian beef industry.

There are some in the industry who urge us to pursue other markets that have potential for increased exports. Canada Beef is working hard on this task to ensure that we are prepared for all possible outcomes. Even amongst this tariff uncertainty, the United States is an economic powerhouse that not only takes a large percentage of Canadian beef products, their consumers are willing to pay high prices for beef. I believe that the North American cattle market is complimentary. We are more efficient

together from a global perspective. CCA is committed to continued advocacy on behalf of an integrated North American cattle market, and we hope that it will prevail. When CCA travels to attend meetings in the USA, we take a message supporting the integrated cattle and beef market. Increased market access around the world can only lead to increased demand for beef, requiring more cattle production and more opportunities for producers.

There is no question that tariffs are the main area of focus, but they are by no means the only topic that CCA is working on. Of increased importance following the recent CCA AGM is a renewed focus on animal disease preparedness. It cannot be stressed enough that traceability and biosecurity must be a priority for beef producers, not just in Canada, but around the world. The ongoing situation with Foot and Mouth Disease in Eastern Europe is of huge concern. Here in Canada, we need a traceability system that works for industry and accounts for our reliance on trade. Our industry takes pride in our commitment to continuous improvement, and it is through that commitment and ongoing consultations between producers and industry that we make these incremental gains to livestock traceability CCA has been involved throughout the process, and we look forward to improvements and simplifications.

Biosecurity is another topic that needs far more attention than it receives. As an industry we have some improvements to make, and we simply must be better prepared. Beef Cattle Research Council and Animal Health Canada recently launched a series of biosecurity resources focused on Foot and Mouth Disease, but these best practices are applicable for preventing all animal diseases. Visit www.

beefresearch.ca/topics/foot-and-mouthdisease to learn more. Most of these resources are also available in French and some are also in Spanish.

To try and reach more producers, I have started recording some short video clips that are being shared on CCA’s Facebook, Twitter/X and LinkedIn accounts. There are so many different types of social media platforms, and we all receive so many emails and text messages every day that it can be very difficult to be heard when you have something to share and to find information that is important to you, especially if you’re not certain when you should be looking for it. I hope that these videos will help CCA’s posts stand out in your social media feeds.

Although our industry is facing a lot of challenges, I am feeling very optimistic about the future. It is important to maintain our focus on young producers. There are great incentives to get into the cattle business, but we need to provide tools for new and young producers to manage the risk that is required to invest in land and cattle. CCA will pursue these needs with the new federal government following the election.

In the fall, I took the plunge into examining the potential of genomic tools and artificial intelligence. For the first time, I submitted samples for genomic testing and received GEPDs (genomically enhanced expected progeny differences) for some of my cattle. It has been a fascinating and eye-opening experience with a bit of a steep learning curve. The data I received has provided so many insights into my cattle herd and decisions that didn’t quite yield the results I expected. I believe that we are barely scratching the surface when it comes to the power of data and the insights that it can provide. I am excited to watch these tools and technologies that help cattle producers grow and evolve.

Farming, Business, and Hunting Converge at Pee Vee Charolais

Phil Hardy established Pee Vee Charolais 36 years ago in Mansonville, Quebec, part of the area known as the Eastern Townships region of southeastern Quebec. It is located between the St. Lawrence Lowland and the U.S. border.

Phil and his wife Pat, who came from a farming background, bought their first Charolais at Brome Fair in 1989 – a group of 10 heifer calves from Marcel Dion (who worked for Lacoste et Frères).

“It was pretty impulsive,” said Phil. “We weren’t’ really ready, but we made ourselves ready.”

Lacoste et Frères had purchased a herd from the Begrand operation in Saskatchewan. “They had some pretty decent genetics,” Phil noted.

Marcel helped Phil build his knowledge of pedigrees and the herdbook, and was on the halter for them as they got into showing at local fairs, Expo Boeuf in Victoriaville, Quebec, and as far afield as the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. They showed until 2002.

Along the way, they bought cattle from a number of prominent breeders. One of Pee Vee Charolais most notable purchases was NZL Polled Raven 165Y.

“He was seven years old when he arrived here and walked pastures for another four years until he was 11 years old. That was a pretty big highlight. He had quite a reputation in those years,” Phil reminisced.

Trips to HTA to buy cattle from Harry Airey led to relaxing visits – Harry and Joan were always very hospitable. In 1998, Pat and Phil made a stopover at HTA for a couple of days, and selected a group of bred twoyear-old Polled Raven females. “It was a big job with such a quality herd. I cannot forget Harry’s second floor of the calving barn where we finalized the purchase!” said Phil.

In 2002, at Agribition they purchased HTA Brenda 244M out of the HTA showstring. She went on to become one of their top cow families.

“We still have grand and great-granddaughters working in the herd,” noted Phil.

Trent Hatch bought a new bull to take back to Manitoba

“Along the years, we acquired four other herdsires from HTA. In 2003, we had a particularly memorable visit for a herdsire. It was a brutally cold, windy day – going through the bull pen we could only stay out ten minutes at a time. Luckily, Harry had special coffee on the second floor of the barn!”

Over the years, the Hardys bought many females and bulls from the Aireys, as well as Sauble Springs/Bob Grunewald and Donmore Charolais (aka ‘the Dons’) in Ontario, John Perrot, Sharp Hills Ranch/Ralph Thornton, and many other breeders.

They are currently using a herdsire from Cedarlea Farms/Garner Deobald, and have a new walking bull from Horseshoe E Charolais. In addition to Charolais, they had two other breeds at different times.

Phil has been involved with the Quebec association (Association Charolais du Québec) as a director before becoming president for 1994-1995 and served again as director in 2010 for another term. He has also judged some local fairs and at Expo Boeuf in 2016 and as recently as 2024.

We still have grand and great-granddaughters working in the herd.

Family business plays a role in the farm operation and recreation

Phil’s professional background is in the family textile/ garment manufacturing business established in 1929. Phil, now retired, was the third generation.

When the factory was getting strained for labour and dealing with government policy changes to protect the industry, they went from 300 employees eventually down to 50-60. This meant that for the next 20 years, Phil was on the road sourcing internationally – Asia, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Guatemala, Mexico – to ensure they could keep up production levels.

Charolais Banner •

During this period, he was not able to be as involved with the farm and cattle.

“I was gone 150 days a year, so my wife was looking after the farm,” he said. “She is very involved with the cattle, so it wasn’t too hard for her to do that.”

At that time they calved out about 35 cows in a 60- to 90-day window. His absence made calving ease a priority when it came to buying herd bulls. “Genetics for small birth weights was a feature, and that they got up and going so it’s no labour” for Pat on her own.

In the early days, their bulls went to the Asbestos test station operated by Michel Gagné, with a sale at the end of the test period. “Our bulls performed pretty well with some good indexes on them,” said Phil.

Our bulls performed pretty well with some good indexes on them.

The focus on breeding for calving ease and vigor fit with his bull market as well, as the biggest complaint from commercial guys in Quebec at the time was that Charolais had “big and dumb calves.”

When the test station closed, Phil consigned to the annual Quebec Select Bull Sale for a number of years, but for the last couple of years he has been selling his bulls from the yard at home.

“We really have no problem moving them out,” noted Phil.

They calve in the fall, ideally end of October into November, and have a good market for those ‘over age’ bulls with more size and volume. It’s an easy sell. “Guys want bulls that are ready to go out and cover more territory for them.”

On pasture at a neighbours - the cows visited the pool once each summer!

Phil breeds the yearling heifers to calve in September to allow some leeway, “so if I miss them AI, they don’t get pushed too far back.” Any bulls that are born later than the end of January are sold as steers.

They are currently running 24 breeding females.

Hunting on the St. Lawrence

“I’m an avid hunter because of the company, Sport Chief, that my family used to own,” stated Phil.

His father produced basic hunting/ workwear garments at their factory. Phil was responsible for bringing the new generation of camo from the United States to market in Canada.

They had tremendous success making high-end, breathable, waterproof, sealed-seam garments.

“This was hunting and, true to hunting, we used to sponsor hunting shows, and that got me to do lots of hunting,” said Phil. He met some of the best outfitters who became personal friends, and went on hunting trips in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., France, and Russia.

Hills Charolais in Sedalia, Alberta, driving there after Agribition in the fall. “It was pretty unique terrain, they probably have the only hills around there. Ralph was a trophy hunter,” he noted.

But amongst all of the places he has hunted, Phil recalls the hunts on the St. Lawrence River as the ones he enjoyed the most.

“There are millions of birds and the views are breathtaking,” stated Phil.

The St. Lawrence, which flows from the Great Lakes into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is a part of the Atlantic Migratory Fly-Way of North America for the seasonal north-south migration of many bird species.

A little further up (200 km north) is a little village named L’Île Verte (Green Island), where Phil has hunted for snow goose, using over 900 decoys and electronic calls to bring flocks down on the bank of the river.“Maybe four or five will separate themselves and come down – you shoot them, never into the flock or you just scare them away,” noted Phil.

There are millions of birds and the views are breathtaking.

“I’ve done some great hunting from the Île d’Orleans and Isle-aux-Grues on the St. Lawrence, which is a very majestic river.”

At Île d’Orleans, about 5km east of downtown Quebec City, the tide rises as much as 30 feet with the pull of the full moon.

“We hunt in blinds that, when the high tide is in, are fully submerged. You can only see and get to them during low tide. Then you have to get out at a certain time, because that tide is so fast when it comes back in. We hunt in blinds made of stone that have been there for generations. It’s quite a unique hunt to see the great waterways and the flight of birds coming in.”

In his opinion, “It’s very majestic hunting on the river. I find it a lot more beautiful than hunting in corn fields or the traditional way on farm land. You’re by the water and it’s a nice relaxing day.”

South of that, Lac Saint-Pierre (part of the river near Trois Rivières) is a very shallow body of water that had to be dredged to let the big boats go through. There they hunt ducks or geese in a ‘sink box’ that floats at water level surrounded by decoys. The ducks or geese come down right over your head. “You see all their legs and their bellies coming down over you and get splashed by their wing tips on the water.”

His passion for the St. Lawrence River was evident as he shared his hunting experiences in and along its banks, hoping also to provide a preview and pique the interest of anyone considering attending the CCA AGM in June. While in Quebec City, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the breadth and beauty of the St. Lawrence River for themselves.

Twins and Testing for Freemartinism

Producers have several options available to them when checking for and identifying freemartins in their herd. Since Charolais, Simmentals, and Holsteins believe it or not have the highest twinning rate. If twinning is high in your herd (some herds approach 10%) and with half of the sets being mixed sexes freemartins are not an uncommon phenomenon. The real issue here is identifying them and making sure they don’t get kept as replacements or sold and tried to be bred as a replacement heifer if they are a true freemartin. This is when losses become big if freemartins are kept for several years trying to get bred when they are sterile and will never breed. This is a grade loss because of age and feed loss when in reality if put into the feedlot with the non-replacement heifers they will perform exceptionally. I do suggest if put in the feedlot ideally it is better to implant them with a steer implant as they are more like steer and grow as such.

Right at birth when mixed twins occur, we know in 90-95% of the cases the heifer is a true freemartin. It is good in some cases to find out the other 5% as in the case of valuable breeding stock you may want to retain them as a breeding animal. The choice will be up to you at that time. So, a farmer could presume they are all freemartins and put them all on the culling list, but you miss the odd fertile animal. Identification becomes critical for sorting the freemartins out at weaning or when replacements are selected. Keep in mind freemartins because of the influence of the male hormones grow extremely well so often will be in the top 25% of the heifers for size and are

often considered for replacements. I don’t know how many times over the years when palpating heifers for select replacement sales where freemartins are detected. This occurs more frequently in large commercial herds generally. Marking their ear tag with twin or a different color or tagging in the opposite ear or the same as steers are all ways to make it a visual determination of freemartins. The writing of “twin” also helps the feedlot or producer down the road. I even notch tags, which are visual and draws your attention plus making them easy to sort out later.

With absolute testing, external genitalia can be checked, and a very prominent clitoris and what I call loosely attached or feathery vulval lips are a dead giveaway. The genital opening may be located way down between the back legs towards where the prepuce would be on a bull. For the others that have more normal looking external genitalia, there is a measuring device commercially available which when inserted into the vagina measures the depth of the vaginal vault. When done on newborns up to a few days of age the measuring device has a negative (short measurement) middle (Indeterminate) and long or positive position. The short or negative position means it is NOT a normal heifer and is thereby a freemartin. I am currently doing some work with bison and the same is true with them. I even used this device on a 300 lb suspect bison freemartin heifer and this cattle device can be used on bison as well.

The final test is a blood test where whole blood is drawn by your veterinarian and sent to the Saskatchewan Research Council lab in Saskatoon, SK. With the blood test, they can determine freemartins as well. Both the above methods are

very accurate. Otherwise, you need to wait till the heifers are much older before they can be palpated and freemartin status determined then. Very occasionally a freemartin heifer is born by itself. The best possible explanation here is it started as a twin and the other fetus was resorbed. As long as the pregnancy has reached 60 days with both fetuses the male fetuses exert enough hormonal influence on the heifer for it to become a freemartin. These will get missed at birth. Owners may notice when the heifers urinate as they often spray urine straight back not down in a stream like a normal heifer.

Palpating heifers to be used as replacements besides removing pregnant ones will pick up the freemartins. Many commercial and purebred producers now get their heifers palpated for breeding soundness. Beware of single dairy heifers being sold, as they often are freemartins and that is the reason they are being marketed.

Freemartin heifers still grow very well, and the question is should they run with heifers or steers? Most often they are fed with the heifers as they still can get ridden and picked on if in a steer pen. Some have rudimentary ovarian tissue so they still cycle. If you can plan ahead when implanting, they do a bit better with a steer implant such as “Revalor S” or other steer implants if you want to fine-tune your management. They need to be marketed though as they are sterile and will never breed. Identify any freemartins this spring and feed them out you won’t be disappointed. Regarding the genetics of twins. Twin heifer calves that are fertile, because they are twins, will have more propensity to twin. Bulls that are a twin themselves will not throw twins more but their heifer offspring

are more likely to twin. Some cows can raise twins but best in the beef world if one calf is adopted onto another cow that has potentially lost a calf.

Cows that do twin are more likely to twin in subsequent years, so some

producers keep a list of them so at calving time if not progressing normally it is good to check the cow in case it is simply twins tangled up. If untangled, they usually are a real easy calving but keep in mind time may have ticked away so they could
