CEO Welcome Hi Team!

In great news, the Department of Transport and Main Roads has awarded our Braking the Cycle program a further $4.5 million over the next 4.5 years, allowing us to continue services at several sites and expand to an additional five new locations.

In other great news from around the state, PCYC Whitsundays Outside Hours School Care has been awarded Best Childcare Facility in the Whitsundays and overall, eighth out of 41 facilities in the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac region. Information from parent reviews and The Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority decided the winner of the competition, held by the Courier Mail.

It is fantastic to see our services being recognised for their quality and commitment to their communities.

2021 State Leadership Conference Late last year many of our leaders, Youth Club Managers and Board of Directors were pleased to be able to attend the organisation’s State Leadership Conference.

Not only did we hear from inspirational speakers including wheelchair rugby Paralympian Chris Bond, The Training Store culture coach Danielle Peters, former AFL Brisbane Lions player Simon Black, and change management speaker Marty Wilson; the positive discussions around change, resilience and leadership resonated with the whole team and I look forward to seeing how our leaders introduce the FISH! concepts into their teams.

PCYC Innisfail BTC mentor nominated for Emerging Volunteer of the Year Meet PCYC Innisfail BTC superstar driver mentor, Margaret, who was recently nominated for Emerging Volunteer of the Year in the FNQ Volunteers Inc Awards.

Becoming a volunteer mentor with Braking the Cycle this year, Margaret has already donated over 150 hours of her time to help many young people.

Congratulations Margaret! Your nomination is well-deserved and we are all very proud to have you as part of the PCYC Innisfail team!

PCYC Mornington Island welcomes new staff member PCYC Mornington Island is thrilled to welcome Kenneth Jacob as the newest team member, as he continues his journey with PCYC Queensland.

Having been involved in a number of PCYC Queensland programs and activities over the years, the team have worked for months to help Kenneth get his birth registered, obtain his blue card, and complete his onboarding and induction.

PCYC Mornington Island Youth Club Manager Sergeant Will Whitaker is thrilled to welcome Kenneth to the team as a casual cleaner, and to provide him with further mentoring and opportunities.

“Kenneth has set a great example for other youth, showing respect for everyone and ensuring that everyone is getting a fair go. He’s exactly the type of person we want representing our clubs and being a role model to other young people.”

“Thanks to funding from Waanyi Joint Venture we can support young people like Kenneth with training and mentoring opportunities they otherwise would not have access to.”

North Queensland PCYC Bowen Peer Up program a success PCYC Bowen Peer Up program participants had their celebration at the Burdekin Bowl Centre recently, all having a great time travelling together and spending the day challenging each other to games.

The Peer Up program was developed as a primary prevention program to support young people with mentoring, education and resources to prevent alcohol and drug related activity. The Bowen Youth Network Group Local Drug Action Team (LDAT) aims to deliver programs and initiatives that will improve young people’s access to drug and alcohol-free activities.

Central Queensland

PCYC Bundaberg Chinese Dragon and Lion Dance Team gets visit from Channel 7 Channel 7 visited PCYC Bundaberg recently to interview some members of the club’s Chinese Dragon and Lion Dance Team; speaking about their involvement in the team and their expectations about performances at Riverfeast and the Eastern Dragon restaurant.

PCYC Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Coordinator first female International Parkour Judge Congratulations to PCYC Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Coordinator, Maree Calder, who has become the first female International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) International Parkour Judge in Australasia!

Congratulations Maree on this incredible achievement!!!

PCYC Toowoomba Get Set for Work participant secures a job Congratulations to PCYC Toowoomba Get Set for Work participant Jasmin Bell, who recently scored a job with McDonalds!

“I’ve secured a job with McDonalds and am awaiting my first shift. I have also completed a Barista course and I plan on doing more study in the future. I have also recently moved into a new place, and I am planning on some renovations and upgrades with my new partner.

The Get Set for Work program helped me realise that I really enjoy studying courses, which I never thought I would. It made me realise that I can meet all sorts of people while studying something you want.

I liked the program so much. It helped me realise some things for my future. I’m really glad I joined the program when I did. My teachers at the time of the program helped me a lot too. They were so kind-hearted and amazing. I hope they are doing great!”

Gold Coast / South East Queensland

Gold Coast clubs hold open days PCYC Ashmore, PCYC Gold Coast and PCYC Nerang all held their club open days recently, promoting the clubs’ activities and programs to thousands of families across the Gold Coast through fitness demonstrations, gymnastics showcases, boxing activities, market stalls and more.

Not only were staff and volunteers out in force to drive community engagement and support for the events, our OSHC staff across the Gold Coast also gave up their Saturdays to support the club open days, sharing their expertise and knowledge to help promote our local OSHC services.

Local Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon, praised our clubs and OSHC services saying “PCYC clubs and OSHC services support and benefit local families and I have been told by local Principals that PCYC OSHC services provide outstanding service to their communities.”

PCYC Beenleigh Get Set for Work Graduation PCYC Beenleigh held a graduation ceremony recently to celebrate the achievements of the 2021 Get Set for Work (GSFW) participants. Previous GSFW participant Alex Perry attended to share his positive experiences with the group of how beneficial the program had been in shaping the business owner he is today.

One young man was awarded the $250 Marie Barber Bursary Award for his perseverance and positive attitude throughout the program.

The participant began the program with significant learning, social and financial disabilities. However he demonstrated great perseverance and collaborated with staff to find employment which catered to his interests and worked around his barriers, increasing his independence and improving his confidence.

Staff Mary Bottrell Member Services Team Leader PCYC Logan When did you first start working with PCYC Queensland?

I started as a volunteer in the Braking the Cycle program in 2014. Since then, I have worked in multiple areas of the organisation including as Acting Club Manager at PCYC Bayside. I have now commenced at PCYC Logan as the Member Services Team Leader (MSTL).

What do you enjoy most about working at PCYC Queensland?

I enjoy being a part of a not-for-profit organisation based on helping people. Every area within our organisation is based on helping someone in one way or another.

Whether it is Member Service Officers (MSOs) serving and creating a culture which can change someone’s day, group fitness that can change someone’s health, or youth development which can change a child’s life. I have seen a lot of good come from this organisation and I am thankful to be a part of it.

What has been the highlight/s over your length of service?

One of the highlights for me has been being a part of the group fitness area. This is where I feel most passionate about and I have had the pleasure of changing the “I cant’s” to the “I can”. I love watching people succeed in their goals and knowing that I have been a part of it.

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

I’m excited about the upgrad to our facilities and programs as it creates a much better service.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’m a 32-year-old working mum. I train six days a week and I am hoping to go into my first body building comp by the end of the year!

Staff Sergeant Leigh James Youth Club Manger PCYC Pine Rivers When did you first start working with PCYC Queensland?

I commenced with PCYC Queensland in April 2016 when I became the Youth Club Manager at PCYC Upper Ross in Townsville.

What do you enjoy most about working at PCYC Queensland?

The ability to work with young people through all the different programming opportunities, both internal and external to PCYC. What has been the highlight/s over your length of service?

From a commercial perspective it was implementing the 24/7 Gym at PCYC Upper Ross. From a programming perspective it was implementing the Love Bites program in Townsville and seeing that grow and how it has continued to thrive since I left two years ago; as the community as a whole has come together to support the program.

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

As we venture out of what I hope is the end of the two years of COVID, getting back to grass roots of crime prevention and youth development.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I joined the QPS 20 years ago. I’ve worked General Duties, Crime Prevention, and now PCYC. I am onto my third house renovation, enjoy health and fitness, and I most recently returned to riding motorcycles after a 20-year gap!

Profiles Volunteer Emily Box PCYC Toowoomba Why did you join PCYC Queensland?

I joined PCYC Queensland to share and teach my passion of gymnastics with children in the community. I have been training as a gymnast at PCYC Toowoomba for 12 years, and now I am training as well as coaching.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with PCYC Queensland?

When volunteering with PCYC Queensland, I enjoy the experience that comes along with working with young gymnasts and helping them to reach their full potential.

What opportunities have you gained from being connected to PCYC Queensland?

From being connected to PCYC Queensland, opportunities of training as a gymnast and being able to coach and work with young gymnasts have presented themselves. I have now transitioned from being a volunteer, to being a paid employee.

What advice would you give a young person thinking of engaging with their local PCYC Queensland?

To a young person thinking of engaging with their local PCYC Queensland, I would say to join them, as the opportunity to be involved in a team and individual sport creates a supportive environment as well as creates friendships.

What is your favourite PCYC Queensland moment?

My favourite PCYC Queensland moment would be when I was presented with Sports Person of the year in 2021 at PCYC Toowoomba!

What does the future hold for you?

In the future, my plans of being a gymnastics coach will continue, as well as my studies.

Thank you to many of our Cadets and Adult Leaders from PCYC Wolffdene ESC, PCYC Toowoomba ESC and PCYC Highfields ESC Units, who recently supported the SES during the recent SEQ flooding event, helping to fill sandbags at the SES depots in Logan and Toowoomba. Your efforts are so appreciated!
