MESSAGE
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., this is your International Executive Director, Daryl Anderson, asking you a simple question: Where are we standing? The answer is just as simple: we are generally standing up, and we are specifically standing up for the rights of our people. That includes the right to vote, the right to voice our opinions, and the right to voluntarily select/elect our leadership!!!
Today, we see so much misdirection and so many deflections aimed at our people. We debate professional salaries, the rap GOAT, and folks' sleeping partners. We control none of those things!! However, our people need proper food, and our vote controls the circumstances. Our children have substandard learning environments, and our vote controls the circumstances. Our women fight to make decisions about their bodies, and our vote controls the circumstances. The commonality among these problems is that we have the right to vote and advocate for change as it pertains to these problems!!
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity is not just a social organization. It is a community service organization, a platform for us to make a real difference in the lives of our people. As one of our Past Presidents eloquently put it, “we are the leading proactive community service organization, dedicated to preparing the next generation of leaders.” These leaders will be people of color, and it is our duty to equip them with the tools they need to succeed.
THE vote! How do we feel about our right to vote, and how do we use that right to vote? Well...our good Brother, Honorable Congressman John R. Lewis, once said, "My dear friends, your vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect union.”
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity must commit to putting on official records the names of our people who can and should vote (registration!); a strategy must be tied to this action with attainable goals. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity must have a plan that assembles our people at the right time and place to aid those who need help fulfilling their right to vote (mobilization!). Most importantly, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity must have a plan to guide those along the path of understanding why we vote, how we vote, and when we vote (education)!!
As Men of Sigma, it is critical that we work towards the objective of increasing the number of people who understand that their vote is essential and, as Honorable Bro. Lewis said, Precious!! We have the duty to perform these actions, and they need to take precedence over some of the other things that we have going on in our current lives. In other words, let’s get out of social media and head back to social services!!
Why is voting so critical? Because it directly impacts economic advancement, the very foundation of our Bigger and Better Business program. As we approach the centennial anniversary of our senior international program, let's redouble our efforts to make the entire system work for those who need Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity more than ever before. Let's use our vote to shape a future where economic prosperity is not a privilege but a right for all.
So…as I sign off on my final Crescent magazine message as the International Executive Director for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., let me remind you that each of us is "a Sigma man; therefore more than a man!” As a Sigma Man, let me encourage you to stroll to the polls and take a stand!!
Hon. Bro.
Daryl A. Anderson, Sr. International Executive Director
INCOMING INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Greetings!
I am truly honored and grateful to serve as the 9th International Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer (IED/COO) of our beloved fraternity. I stand on the shoulders of my fellow past IED/ COO brothers who have paved the way for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. to be one of the premier fraternities in the nation.
As we embark on this journey together, I look forward to working with and for you to reimagine how we collectively prepare our members to be transformational and strategic thought leaders and partners within their communities and vocations, co-collaborators in advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts, and champions and advocates of our motto: Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has and always will be instrumental in voter education, voter registration, voter mobilization, and voter protection efforts. Due to our international reach, all elections are vital and important to promoting a just democracy. The 2024 Election will be one of the most consequential and momentous elections of our lifetime. I recall my excitement as a child when my parents would take my siblings and I to the local elementary school with them to cast their votes for their candidate of choice or ballot issue(s). I vividly remember my mom reminding us…“you should always educate yourself on matters that affect you and your communities and vote in every election. If there is an election in your home, you better vote.” As we prepare to elect the new leaders of our nation, I strongly encourage you to spend some time researching and learning about the candidates and ballot issues that align with your values and moral compass. Always remember, your vote matters!
Lastly, I am excited about celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our Bigger and Better Business Program. Collectively, we have created pathways and opportunities for our members and communities to thrive, which enhances upward mobility and promotes generational wealth for our families and future generations. As we march toward this momentous occasion, I urge you to identify ways to create sustainable partnerships to ensure that our small businesses remain viable and relevant for years to come.
Thanks for allowing me to serve you and your communities.
Bro. Dr. Phillip “Flapp” Cockrell International Executive Director
AS I BELIEVE IN SIGMA, I MUST BELIEVE IN HIM
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S MESSAGE
If you’re anything like me, you monitor daily the twists and turns of local, state and national politics. As an avid viewer of local and national network television news, podcasts, cable stations CNN and MSNBC, I MUST be engaged, aware and fully informed. The future of our nation depends on it.
Our fraternity also depends on us, as members, to be fully prepared to stand in the gap for those whom we serve. We’ve signed up for the commitment to Empowering Generations of Men to BELIEVE in Advocacy, Community Service and Engagement. This is not only our mantra through 2025, but especially during this General Election year. Based on the calculated strategy implemented by our leadership, I believe Sigma will be truly impactful in its mission.
However, I can’t deny that the current state of the nation can be scary at times. The alarming mentality of some citizens, deliberate misinformation by some elected leaders and cable news outlets, widespread partisan viewpoints and an unstable belief in our Supreme Court, causes great concern for the future of a fair and equal democracy. Sometimes I just have to push pause!
Yet, in spite of all these concerns, I MUST remember that my belief should rest in the ONE who calms to sea, renders peace and ordains the future. I believe in HIM, who makes me glad.
Faith never fails, no matter the outcome. When it’s all finished and the outcome is clear, the business continues. As oath keepers and gatekeepers, we continue to advance the business of Phi Beta Sigma through its programs.
Our Bigger & Better Business program continues to level up year after year. Where I’m proud of the various initiatives, I’m most excited about the Sigma Business Network and the fraternity’s engagement with Macy’s Divine Nine Partnership. The fraternity’s support and exposure for Sigma Brothers who own businesses is amazing. In this issue, we feature several business owners, along with their awesome products and services.
Special thanks to the Tayion Collection and Linderal Designs for providing the awesome garments for this special dual edition.

SAFEGUARDING MY BROTHER’S FRATERNITY PIN FOR 50 YEARS
By Bro. M.L. Hull
The story began in December 1967 when 7 fellow schoolmates and I were approached Bro. David Hickman and Bro. Lester Smith to become charter members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.’s Delta Phi Chapter at Mississippi Valley State College. Brothers Johnny Williams, Celois Vaughn, Toby Bartee, Clarence Estes, Benny Montgomery, Rosevelt Barner, Charles Thigpen and I (M.L. Hull) were selected. We proudly crossed the Burning Sands in December 1968. But this is not the center piece for this story.
The 50-year safeguarding journey began to unfold while I served as the chapter’s secretary under Brother Celois Vaugh, President and Honorable Brother Alvin J. McNeil, then International President. Bro. Bobby Thomas and I met in the fall of 1970. He later became a fraternity brother of the second wave of brothers at MVSU. As brothers we quickly bonded together over shared goals of Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.
Bro. Thomas’s delinquent initiation fees and chapter dues were a concern, but we trusted it would only be temporary. After much dialogue, his fraternity pin was determined to be withheld until he acquired good standing. Bro. Chapter President Vaughn charged me to safekeep the brother’s fraternity pin until then. Our bond tightened and so did our share of fraternity memories. The mutual love for our fraternity became ingrained in us all. Life in the Delta Phi chapter solidified. As a symbol of our brotherhood, Bobby, as well as all brothers, were to receive and honor the fraternity pin. It wasn't just a piece of jewelry; it was a symbol of trust, loyalty, and the unwavering bond between brothers who had stood the test of time. The frat pin had become a cherished
relic, a reminder of the enduring strength of friendship and the mutual memories shared over our lifetime. In the meantime, Father Time continued his unforgiving march and we somehow all began to travel down separated paths undertaking different endeavors.
Little did we know that incidents around this gesture would evolve into a 50-year commitment. Years passed, careers changed, marriages performed, and the joys and sorrows of life happened. Through it all I safeguarded the pin, while. cherishing the trust placed in me. The pin became a symbol of enduring brotherhood, a tangible link to our youth and the unbreakable bond we shared.
So often, I would rehash the task of locating Bro. Bobby Thomas without avail. Different leads through several Mississippi towns missed the mark. Half a century later, at the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Concave in Myrtle Beach, SC. I mentioned once again the safekeeping of Bro. Bobby’s frat pin. This time it was productive. Brother Arnold Hollimon (Bobby’s line brother) interjected “Bobby Thomas? I know where he is … I can let you talk to him…” Bro. Bobby and I were so joyfully moved! We exchanged information and finally Bro. Bobby Thomas held his cherished fraternity pin realizing the depth of the fraternity’s brotherhood and its significance. A testament to the enduring power of our brotherhood.
My only regret is that Brother Bobby passed away a year later in 2020. My joy is that “through it all, this fraternity pin successfully completed its journey!”

BELIEVING POWER
IN THE Herald & Defend: OF
OUR
VOTE
By Bro. Steve E. Ballard
Every four years, our nation’s leaders and political pundits claim “this is the most important election in our nation’s history”! In 2024, this appears to be a bona fide truth. Since the occurrence of a dramatic 2020 election, the January 6th Insurrection, healing from the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion and attack on Ukraine, dismantling of Roe v. Wade, impeachments and many criminal charges of former President Donald Trump, and more, the United States of America is positioned for a fight for democracy.
Millions of Americans face grave concern over the rise of violence due to an emboldened belief in white supremacy and racial intolerance. Steadily evaporating is a belief that America’s citizens can harbor different political viewpoints and freely coexist. This is the current state of affairs under which the nation is approaching the 2024 General Election.
A part of the founding vision of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was that the Brotherhood, as the talented tenth, would enhance the lives of the culture, communities and people they served. Sigma promised to be an aid in society for the advancement of society. So how has the organization positioned itself to respond to the concerns of millions of Americans and support and promote a fair election?
Honorable Brother Chris V. Rey, International President makes it perfectly clear. “Politics is not a spectator sport – it requires Phi Beta Sigma to be focused, informed and engaged as a brotherhood. Our job is to not only be players in the game of politics, but coaches as well. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “Democracy demands an educated and informed electorate.” Rey goes on the share the belief that the Fraternity’s commitment to civic engagement must start with protecting the voting rights of all citizens, especially communities that are historically disenfranchised by our societal institutions. He continues, “during the election cycle, we must not only implement
THINKING NEGRO insists that the white man’s civilization is as safe with a ballot in his hands as it is with a bullet or bayonet in his hands. He is proud of the fact that in every war for his country’s advancement or preservation he has had a worthy and honorable part; nor was he regarded as a menace to his white comrades. By his record in civil life he would set up a claim to such an equal share as a citizen in its government as he bears in its defense as a solider.”

comprehensive voter registration, education, and mobilization efforts – we must also rally support to protect the fundamental rights of minority voters.”

Bro. Malwan Johnson International Director of Social Action
VOTER REGISTRATION, EDUCATION AND MOBILIZATION PROGRAM
A long-term and multi-faceted strategy was mandatory in order to fully address the widespread concerns of the upcoming elections.
Brother Malwan Johnson, International Director of Social Action and the Social Action Program Team worked closely with President Rey for nine months in 2023 to develop the program. The roll out has been occurring sense the first quarter of this year.
“The purpose of our Sigma Voter Engagement initiative is aligned with the mission to change the culture around voting and to increase participation in each election by helping to close the race and age gap within our prospective,” says Brother Malwan Johnson. “The goal is to assist our chapters on the international, regional and state levels to effectively implement the initiative to ensure that more males are participating in the voting process.”
The success of the program will be measured by its impact to the community, stakeholders, partners and sponsors. Some of the desired outcomes and deliverables include an increased awareness of the voting process in state and national elections, more minorities driven to participate in the election process, an increase in the number of registered voters, finding solutions to driving more people to the polls, and advocating for more polling locations and assist in reopening polling locations in underserved communities. Chapters are encouraged to participate in activities that aim to influence decisions within political, economic, social systems, and institutions of the communities they serve.
PARTNERS IN THE FIGHT
“We’re in this fight together,” claims Brother Johnson. “Our connections have enabled us to partner with other service organizations to implement this program. These are great resources, long-standing partnerships and new
alliances who’ll be utilized again in the future.” Program partners include the NAACP, Urban League, When We All Vote, Vote.org, Vote Riders, as well as local community outreach organizations and nonprofits.
The first element of the program kicked off in March 2024, as Phi Beta Sigma was a participating sponsor of the NPHC Black Male Voter Summit in Washington, DC. All five of the National Pan Hellenic Council fraternities held the three-day summit aimed as a “Call to Action”…
The Summit kick-off event was Church Service at the historical Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA, where Pastor Reverend Dr. Howard-John Wesley, welcomed and hosted the Fraternities with an exceptional message charging the members to stay engaged and active in the political process. The three-day summit of sessions and activities included a Collegian-led Voter Rally at the Martin Luther King Memorial, Presidential Call to Action from the Fraternity Presidents, visit with 4 –6th graders at the Statesmen Academy in Southeast, Washington, DC talking about the importance of voting, panel on key issues that can yield more Black men to the ballot box, and more.
Highlights of the summit included the luncheon’s keynote speaker Hon. Don Scott, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, the first Black Speaker in the history of the 400-year-old legislative body. Also Sigma leader Brother Vanderbilt Thompson, Collegiate Member-At-Large participated on a panel focused on Unlocking the Millennial and Gen Z Vote. Brother Stephen Miller-Pitts, Virginia Social Action Director navigated the robust discussion from these generational leaders. “This work that we are laying the foundation for is pivotal,” says Brother MillerPitts “Millennial and Gen Z generations will be the majority of the voting population by 2028. We must educate our members and communities on how to become civically savvy to course correct the direction of the country.” Throughout the year, chapters will conduct voter registration drives urging and assisting eligible citizens in becoming registered voters. Chapters will leverage the organization’s partnerships with NAACP, Vote.org and When We All Vote and encourage the use of QR Codes to assist with registration.
Early voting has traditionally been strong amongst African American voters. Chapters are encouraging citizens to find their state’s early voting schedule and advertise that to the community.
Seminars will be held to prepare voters for Election Day during voter registration drives. Educating the community is important; such questions as:
• What offices are on the ballot?
• What ballot initiatives, referendums, or propositions are on the ballot?
• How to find your polling place?
• What times are the polls open?
• Does your state have early voting?
• Who can vote by absentee and how?
VOTER EDUCATION
The program stresses the importance of preparing voters for new voter identification laws in their respective states. Vote Riders is an organization that offers pocket-sized Voter ID Information Cards that can be used as guides to what types of IDs are accepted to vote in each state. Cards are available in English and Spanish and all 50 states and DC.
Hosting a Get Out the Vote community rally in the neighborhood can help educate and prepare citizens and neighbors. Also staying engaged by attending political events and local strategy sessions will ensure election information is being distributed throughout the community.
VOTER REGISTRATION
VOTER MOBILIZATION
Brother Johnson stresses that the third component is most relevant. “Voter Mobilization is the key! Transporting people to the polls!” This requires securing the right liability insurance or partnering with another organization who’s already made the appropriate legal arrangements to transport people to the polls.
Another idea is supporting local church efforts. During early voting and on Election Day, churches often organize “Souls to the Polls” efforts – they members travel to the polls together and vote. Additionally, chapters can assist with organizing a neighborhood group to meet up and go to the polls, called “Stroll to the Polls”, while “Corn Waving” is a fun Election Day activity. A team of volunteers are strategically placed on street corners waving election signs to remind people to vote or provide important election information.
Chapters can also host a phone bank program to encourage people to go vote or stay in contact with your circles of influence who are registered voters and remind them to vote.
“Defending our right to vote and protecting the integrity of our vote are the themes at which we elevate during our voter engagement efforts,” says International President Chris V. Rey. “The men of Phi Beta Sigma are strong voices for the voiceless and get in some “Good Trouble” as our late Hon. Brother John Lewis would say, through our advocacy work. Being good stewards in our community and commitment to “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity” our impact in making individuals in the communities we serve more informed and able to participate in the legislative process.”
In recognizing the evolving landscape of societal needs and the importance of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity in playing an active and impactful role, it was evident to the leadership that a strategic initiative for political and civic engagement would be, not only beneficial, but necessary for the sustained growth and influence of the organization. A program was developed for such a cause: SIGMA IMPACT 365: Blue Boots on the Ground.
SIGMA IMPACT 365: BLUE BOOTS ON THE GROUND
Bro. Chris V. Rey, J.D. International President
Brother Malwan Johnson expresses the importance of organization’s political and civic engagement strategy. “Sigma Impact 365 is our blueprint for how chapters should engage their communities in the political process. In Phi Beta Sigma, this aligns with our Voter Empowerment Focus Area as outlined in our 2040 Strategic Plan. The goal of Sigma Impact 365 is for our chapters to be engaged, informed, and active in the political arena. The program isn’t just about building stronger chapters; it’s about creating a legacy of empowerment and impact. As brothers when we unite in purpose, we transform our collective passion into a powerhouse of community transformation!”
“Our chapters require a structured guide, underlining the essential steps and best practices for organizing and executing political and civic initiatives,” shares President Rey. “This need extends to establishing effective chapter structures, communication channels, leadership roles, and deploying civic outreach efforts that resonate within our various communities. The absence of such a systematic approach hinders the realization of our full potential as a force for positive change.”
During the research and development phase the Social Action team recognized the urgency in the fraternity’s Voting Empowerment initiatives being able to effectively engage in open dialogue with elected representatives and provide unbiased
information to the public. Building relationships with elected officials, hosting nonpartisan candidate forums, and engaging the public in a collaborative manner demands a standardized, cohesive strategy. “The absence of a formalized framework impedes our ability to effectively advocate for policies and actions that impact our membership, communities, states, and the world around us, “says Brother Johnson. “The absence of a clear timeline and a coordinated effort diminishes our impact during critical election cycles. Without the expansion of social and civic partnerships supporting fair voting
rights and a focused community engagement strategy, our advocacy remains fragmented, limiting our ability to effect meaningful change. We have exemplar chapters, but now, we needed to bring their examples to scale.”
“Through Sigma Impact 365, we harness the power of politics as a pillar of community service, equipping every Phi Beta Sigma brother with the understanding and tools needed to strengthen our chapters and forge meaningful partnerships. Together, we’re not just participating in our communities – we ‘re transforming them,” says Brother Ashford Hughes, Sigma Impact 365 Committee Chair.
Hon.
Through impactful initiatives and grassroots efforts, the objective is to strategically immerse the fraternity members in the core local, state and international issues. By metaphorically lacing up their ‘blue boots,’ the aim is to cultivate a profound sense of unity, fostering collective action for substantive and positive change within the community.
In the short term, the program is an international campaign aimed to build social and political awareness, socio-political leadership capacity, and socio-political action across organization’s seven regions. Also, to establish a framework that can be operationalized to ensure Phi Beta Sigma at every level is fostering social and political education, engagement, and community influence.
The initiative seeks to make lasting civic and social community impact not just during presidential election cycles, but every year utilizing the growth mindset of the Capacity Building 4C’s beginning internally with the membership and carrying over within the community:
• Capacity Building (skills and knowledge)
• Connections (building civic relationships and networks)
• Cognition (shifts in organizational beliefs and values regarding civic education and action)
• Confidence Building (self-efficacy within every chapter)
Sigma Impact 365: Blue Boots on the Ground is crafted to resonate with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity members across both collegiate and alumni chapters. Recognizing the varying capacities and aspirations of the collegiate chapters, a nuanced and adaptable approach is being implemented to ensure that each chapter, irrespective of its level of experience, can actively participate in civic engagement initiatives. This tailored strategy aims to empower the collegiate chapters as they step into a more prominent role in civic affairs.
Outreach is extended to potential community partners, actively seeking collaboration with nonpartisan civic organizations at both the local and international levels. By forging alliances with these organizations, the members can solidify the commitment to fostering meaningful partnerships that amplify the impact of the collective efforts. The program equips stakeholders with several takeaways:

Investing in Change: The SigmaPAC 1914
BY BRO. FREDERICK BELL
As a nonprofit organization, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. faces limitations in its political engagement. To bridge this gap, the Sigma Political Action Committee 1914, Inc. (SigmaPAC 1914) was established in 2017 under the New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation Act. SigmaPAC 1914 is dedicated to advancing social, civic, business, and political interests that align with our organization and the communities we serve. Committed to supporting and endorsing candidates devoted to addressing complex public policy issues, SigmaPAC 1914 strives to foster positive change across all levels of government.
“At its core, SigmaPAC 1914 is driven by a vision of a more equitable society,” says Brother David Turner, International First Vice President and former Chairman of the SigmaPAC 1914. “a vision where all individuals, particularly those historically disadvantaged, have access to opportunities for growth and prosperity.
The SigmaPAC has a multifaceted agenda including but not limited to protecting democracy, strengthening gun safety legislation, investing in public education, advancing economic development for Black communities,
ensuring healthcare access, and enhancing transportation infrastructure, the PAC leaves no stone unturned in its pursuit of a fair and just society.”
At the core of the PAC’s mission lies its dedication to education and advocacy. Understanding the vital role of informed citizens, SigmaPAC 1914 endeavors to empower communities by educating them on crucial issues and the candidates vying for representation. Through its political advocacy and community support programs, the PAC works to uphold accountability among elected officials, ensuring they faithfully represent the interests of the people at every level of government.
In alignment with its mission, SigmaPAC 1914 proudly launched the John R. Lewis Political Leadership and Social Justice Boot Camp in 2021, an initiative crafted to cultivate the next generation of political leaders. Inspired by the legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis, this non-partisan program equips participants with the skills and strategies necessary to navigate the complexities of electoral campaigns. From campaign planning to community engagement, messaging, fundraising, and voter outreach, the Lewis Boot Camp offers a comprehensive curriculum tailored to empower individuals to either run for office, work on a political campaign or engage in issue advocacy. The Lewis Boot Camp was held virtually this year on May 3rd4th.
Through interactive workshops and a campaign simulation, participants are immersed in a learning environment that fosters collaboration, solidarity, and political empowerment. By building connections and sharing knowledge, the Lewis Boot Camp fosters a sense of camaraderie among participants, laying the groundwork for the collective advancement of Black political power at both the local and national levels.
“As SigmaPAC 1914 continues its vital work, we invite all who share this vision to join our Efforts,” shares Brother Frederick Bell, Chairman. “For those who wish to contribute and invest in the PAC’s mission, there is an opportunity to make a difference by visiting thesigmapac1914.org. Whether through financial support or active participation, every individual has the power to play a role in shaping the future of our nation.”
The SigmaPAC 1914 embodies the spirit of activism and advocacy, tirelessly championing the interests of all Americans, especially those who have been marginalized and underserved. Through its commitment to education, empowerment, and political engagement, the PAC serves as a catalyst for change in our communities. As we envision the future, let us answer the call to action, standing united in solidarity as we endeavor to build a more just and equitable world for generations to come.

Bigger & Bolder: THE BIGGER AND BETTER BUSINESS PROGRAM
BY BRO. JULIO SÁENZ AND STEVE E. BALLARD
In December 1924, Phi Beta Sigma pioneered economic development in communities of color with the Bigger and Better Business Program, launching our first national program at our Tenth Conclave in Philadelphia. Originating with a focus on advancing Negro businesses in competitive acumen, efficiency, and public service, the program was a trailblazer in promoting black entrepreneurship.
Bigger and Better Business has its roots deeply embedded in economic justice, initiated by influential Sigma Brother James A. “Billboard” Jackson. The program’s early success was marked by an exhibit of 50 businesses, which drew thousands, inspiring the fraternity to national action. Bro. Jackson was chosen as the first International Director of the program, and interwove social action with economic upliftment, championing the ‘Buy Black’ movement.
Today, Bigger and Better Business continues as a multifaceted initiative, fostering minority business support, nurturing empowerment among Sigma businessmen, and embedding sound business principles within the community.
“For 100 years, Phi Beta Sigma men have worked tirelessly to promote economic progress and parity within the African-American community,” said Brother Terrence Gibson, International Director of Bigger and Better Business.
“We understand that an essential tool in that progress has been to educate the communities we live and serve in to be more financially secure through investment in real estate, investment in stocks, business development and financial planning.”
But to fully understand the scope of the program’s evolution, one must consider the challenge faced from one administration to the next. In order to continue advancing its multi-layered focus and continual progress from the previous administration, the program required a passionate director knowledgeable of its history and prepared to elevate up.
Brother Terrence Gibson was elected International Director of Bigger and Better Business at the 2021 Conclave in Myrtle Beach, SC. He shares how his passion for the program was converted into a campaign strategy. “I’ve been a part of the Bigger and Better Business realm since 2014 and one of my biggest goals was to make sure that brothers across the international landscape was afforded the opportunity to be educated in the areas of the program. I started as the Florida State Director of Bigger and Better Business and created a component called the Adopt-A-Business piece. I looked at the broad landscape of how we are as a fraternity in terms of supporting Black-owned businesses. There were not enough opportunities for us to go out and support.”
Brother Gibson replicated the fraternity’s Adopt-A-School initiative with a business perspective; inviting Blackowned businesses to present to local chapters and chapters, in-turn patronize those businesses within their respective communities. Thus, the program launched locally, successfully expanding to the state and region. Hon. Bro. Quentin Goodwin, then International Director of Bigger and Better Business recognized the successful engagement of the initiative and decided to submit the Adopt-A-Business initiative on the international level.
As Hon. Bro. Reginald Sluch ascended to the Director role, he recommended linking the Adopt-A-Business program with the Black Spend Initiative in 2020 to capture the dollars Sigma chapters were
supporting with Black-Owned businesses. Today, these stats are being used to leverage partnerships with some of the nation’s top corporations like JPMorgan Chase, Macy’s, Men’s Wearhouse and Small Business Administration.
“Going through all of that—when it was time for me to follow behind Brother Sluch’s footstep, I wanted to make sure that we educated the brothers on the financial literacy piece,” says Brother Gibson. “What are we gonna do to create this generational wealth platform? I looked at the previous directors’ platforms, I saw that we didn’t educate the brothers enough. I decided to run on making sure that we had sub-committees of each separate initiative and secured skillful, industry experts as committee leads. I wanted to create a platform where brothers and the community would become fully educated across all aspects of the Bigger and Better Business realm.”
Gibson’s goals were quickly reached. The interests in the Billboard Jackson Entrepreneurial Competition increased significantly, the program launched a partnership with The Operation Hope Foundation who facilitated training on starting businesses, a partnership with Bijon Hendricks of Builder Bees Institute which also teaches entrepreneurship. Clearly the Bigger and Better Business legacy is changing faces and making major hand prints on the Brotherhood and the community.
Let us honor and amplify this enduring legacy, building on the vision set forth by our Founders and the indomitable spirit of Bro. Billboard Jackson by learning about its current initiatives.
As underscored by FORBES Magazine, financial literacy is the linchpin of economic empowerment. By mastering skills from budgeting to retirement planning, individuals are equipped to make informed decisions, fostering monetary stability and enhancing quality of life. Such literacy is not just about knowledge—it’s empowerment, allowing one to deftly navigate the economic landscape, steering towards financial health.
Our mission is to infuse our communities and chapters with this vital knowledge. By hosting financial seminars and fostering investment clubs and contests, we aim to pivot our community from consumerism to ownership. These initiatives are specifically designed to introduce financial vehicles like the stock market, real estate and other investments to the Brothers and to stimulate active participation in financial planning.
“Our goal is to educate Brothers to make strong financial decisions and inspire the communities we serve to do the same.”

“Our goal is to educate Brothers to make strong financial decisions and inspire the communities we serve to do the same, “said Bro. Julian Heyward Financial Literacy Lead Investment Contest and Investment Club Lead. “Financial literacy is the missing link in the path towards financial freedom.
This vision is echoed by Bro. Rashon Howard, national lead of Financial LiteracyEstate Planning, Wills and Trusts “We want to educate Brothers on these foundational points so we can be the pillars and examples in the community”.
“For the middle class, the vast majority of our net worth is in our homes and when we get to retirement, you can have six-figure equity,” said Bro. Marcelin Fils-Aime, Home Ownership Lead. “Everywhere we live, work or visit is a someone’s real estate investment which is why we need to have a piece of the pie ourselves.
Dress for Success: Phi Beta Sigma’s New Initiative
Phi Beta Sigma has established an innovative initiative to arm underserved communities with the tools for success in the modern workplace. In collaboration with The Men’s Wearhouse, the Dress for Success & Interview 101 Initiative was launched to support men of color in their professional journeys.
Understanding the power of first impressions and the evolving HR landscape, the program aims to equip participants with not just the knowledge of business attire but the skills to navigate interviews with confidence. Our targeted workshops offer guidance on appropriate dress, interview etiquette, and more—essential tools for those entering or advancing in the workforce.
This initiative reaches out to high school and college students, Sigma Beta Clubs, local community members, job seekers, and those reentering the workforce, promising a significant impact on professional development.
The SBA and Phi Beta Sigma: A Partnership for Growth
Phi Beta Sigma continues its partnership with the Small Business Administration (SBA) aimed at fortifying Black business and entrepreneurship in our communities. As the sole federal agency dedicated to small business support, the SBA offers comprehensive services—from counseling and capital to contracting advice.
The alliance opens doors for brothers who are, or aspire to be, business owners, granting access to invaluable SBA resources. The program is committed to serving as a bridge, enhancing the SBA’s reach within our communities, and contributing to the growth of Black-owned businesses.
Targeted at aspiring entrepreneurs within the Brotherhood and community businesses, the joint efforts provide SBA-hosted webinars and workshops designed to provide insights into successful business ownership, funding acquisition, and the basics of entrepreneurship.
Project VITA: Bringing Tax Assistance to Our Communities
Phi Beta Sigma proudly supports economic wisdom through Project VITA, the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which offers free tax preparation to those earning $64,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers.
Our community members, including our Brothers, stand to gain significantly from these services. The IRS’s collaboration with community organizations like Phi Beta Sigma is ensuring the broadening of VITA’s impact, especially in communities of color, while providing education on the tax process. Volunteering with Project VITA helps to demystify taxes, discover IRS career paths, and seize opportunities for financial literacy.
“You don’t have to be an accountant to volunteer with VITA as there are a number of
ways Brothers can make a positive impact,” said Bro. Desmond Dyles Project VITA Lead. “Something as simple as being a greeter at a VITA site, can help a person of color feel more comfortable coming in and getting the financial guidance they need.”
We’re committed to enhancing awareness of VITA services, fostering connections with the IRS, and promoting available employment, internships, and educational programs. Our Brothers and communities gain a better understanding of tax obligations and access a network of tax professionals and IRS resources.
Empowering Growth: The Adopt-A-Business Initiative
Phi Beta Sigma’s International Adopt-ABusiness initiative is spearheading economic development by bolstering Black-Owned businesses. This initiative focuses on nurturing the growth and promotion of these enterprises through strategic partnerships and shared resources.
By forging a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with our chapters, businesses gain promotional opportunities for events and services, both in-store and online. Chapters can tap into business resources for events, while business owners can leverage the skills and knowledge of chapter members to sharpen their business prowess.
The goal is to uplift Black-Owned businesses globally, enhancing their competitive edge and service quality. This includes welcoming business owners to chapter meetings, supporting them financially, and hosting virtual business fairs to amplify their visibility.
Since 2021 the level of chapter engagement with the Bigger and Better Business program has increased dramatically. “You can look at the participation with our webinars, informationals— all of the things that we have been doing,“ says
Brother Gibson speaks to the heightened involvement. “From our partnership with NAREB, SBA, John Hope Foundation and IRS. Before we had minimal participation, now we consistently have nearly 200 brothers participating. Before, you had brothers who didn’t really understand what Bigger and Better Business means. Now you have international brothers wanting to be a part of the program.”
As we continue to weave the fabric of our economic future, let’s draw inspiration from the rich tapestry of our Sigma past, embodied in the Bigger and Better Business Program. May we strive with zeal and unity to elevate the narrative of Black entrepreneurship, nurturing the seeds planted by our founders and fed by the dedicated efforts of our Brotherhood.
As summarized by Bro. Gibson, “Financial security is the transgenerational gift we wish all our communities may enjoy to truly enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
Bro. Julio Saenz

Bigger and Better Business (BBB): EMPOWERING AFRICAN AMERICAN BUSINESS THROUGHOUT HISTORY
By Brother Dr. Kevin Christian
The first twenty-five years of the phi beta sigma bigger and better business program marks a transformative period characterized by innovation and fraternal impact. Established with a vision to uplift black businesses, the program swiftly grew under the guidance of visionary leaders throughout the fraternity. Throughout the pages of early crescent magazines, these leaders chronicled the program’s evolutions, documenting milestones, successes, and challenges. Bigger and better business became and remains a cornerstone of the fraternity’s commitment to economic empowerment.
In the history of phi beta sigma fraternity, the commitment to economic empowerment has been a beacon of hope and progress, championing the cause of economic self-sufficiency through one of our pioneering initiatives and national programs, bigger and better business (bbb).
At its core, the bbb program was initially designed to address the systemic barriers faced by african american entrepreneurs. In the early 20th century, black businesses struggled to thrive in a landscape dominated by racial segregation, discrimination, and disenfranchisement. In response, phi beta sigma launched the program in 1924, with a mission to promote economic development and financial growth and independence within african american communities.
PHI BETA SIGMA, YESTERDAY AND TODAY: BIGGER AND BETTER BUSINESS
By Felix J. Brown M.D. National Vice-President
(From the Souvenir Program, “Bigger and Better Business Campaign, April 1949, Sponsored by Iota and Lambda Chapters, Richmond, VA)
During the years of development and expansion of the Fraternity which has grown from three brothers in 1914 to more than 6,600 brothers today, many signal honors have been scored, among them being the inauguration of the Bigger and Better Business Program which was activated at the 1925 Conclave in Richmond. Bigger and Better Business has forged its way to the front as the most outstanding contribution of the Fraternity to the economic welfare of the Negro race.
The crowning feature of this program has been pointing out to Negro consumers the many values derived from trading with Negro business enterprises on the one hand and in encouraging Negro business not only to improve the types of business operated, but to venture out into new fields, on the other hand. These annual programs include radio presentations, mass meetings, symposiums, assemblies in various colleges and high schools, surveys of various local business conditions, food shows and various other types of business display.
Among the many examples of tangible results of the Fraternity’s Bigger and Better Business Program have been the following: (1) Reorganization of the Negro Business League of Atlanta, now called The Atlanta Negro Chamber of Commerce; (2) The creation of the Greater Boston Negro Business Association; (3) The organization of the Capital Trade Association and the Red Circle Cooperative Stores in Richmond; and (4) The valuable information secured as the result of a survey, conducted in Petersburg to determine the attitudes of Negros towards business enterprises conducted by Negroes.
Despite the progress that the program has made since its inception, the program’s mission remains as relevant today as it was a century ago. African American businesses still face significant challenges. In the face of these challenges, supporting African American businesses and industries is more important than ever.
The National Bigger and Better Business programs embodies the spirit of resilience, determination and solidarity that defines the African American experience. Through its advocacy and outreach efforts, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity continues to empower the next generation of Black entrepreneurs and leaders.
Phi Beta Sigma’s Bigger and Better Business Program is a living testament to the enduring legacy of African American entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. As we reflect on its significance, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting African American businesses and industries, recognizing that our collective prosperity depends on the success of all members of our society. By working together to build a more inclusive and equitable economy, we can honor the legacy of the BBB Program and create a brighter future for generations to come.
ORIGIN OF THE BIGGER AND BETTER BUSINESS MOVEMENT
By MHF A. L. Taylor Alpha Chapter, Washington, D.C. (From
The Crescent, December 1933)
This is the season of the year when the leaders in the many Chapters of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity are marshalling their forces in a campaign for a bigger and better business. In this connection, it is appropriate at this time to make a brief statement of the origin and aim of the Bigger and Better Business Movement as carried on under the auspices of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
From the very beginning of the Fraternity in 1914, the founders took the position that a college fraternity should stand for more than social enjoyment or even high scholarship, as important as these factors are in the life of a people. They felt that an organization builded upon a permanent foundation, with an ever increasing membership of college trained men, should seek to serve the most urgent needs of the community and to remedy the fundamental defects in the community’s program of development.
The chief founder had chosen a business career for himself and it was but natural for him to seek to weave into the fabric of the fraternity the commercial concept and to direct its special efforts along avenues of commerce and industry.
and to build up sentiment in favor of the movement. In 1924, the secretary included in the program of the annual convention at Philadelphia provisions for a commercial conference and a bigger and better business exhibit.
The business leaders of the race were asked to give statements as to the best methods of developing race business. Business firms and organizations were asked to send to the exhibit copies of their annual reports, calendars, advertising material and other literature bearing on their work.
The responses were great. Twenty of the leading business men sent statements to be read at the conference and more than fifty firms and corporations sent material for the exhibit. A large section of the lobby of the Y.M.C.A., where the convention held its sessions, was given over to the exhibit, which was viewed by several thousand visitors during the convention week of December 26 to 31, 1924.
No definite action along this line, however, was taken till 1920. In this year the General Board, through its executive secretary sent a letter to the Chapters asking for suggestions as to the best way by which the work of the fraternity could be developed and extended into larger fields of usefulness.
Encouraged by the response to this letter, the secretary recommended to the convention of 1920, that a business campaign be carried on each year as a part of the national work of the fraternity. The recommendation was favorably received by the convention and passed on to the General Board for further study.
During the year 1921 interviews on the question of a business campaign with many of the graduate and honorary members of several chapters and the conclusion was reached that the time was not ripe for such a movement. The general office continued to press the issue
The conference and exhibit made such a favorable impression on the delegates till nothing more was needed to be done to develop a sentiment for the business movement.
During the year 1925 the general office was virtually swamped with the letters and recommendations asking that the movement be made permanent. The Richmond convention accepted the proposition without a dissenting vote, and in the spring of 1926, the first Bigger and Better Business campaign of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was started on a national scale.
The historical significance of this national program cannot be overstated. During an era marked by Jim Crow Laws and racism, African American businesses served as vital pillars of community and self-reliance. The fraternity understood the critical role that economic empowerment played in the fight for racial equality.
Bigger and Better Business has proven and continues to serve as a catalyst for social change, inspiring other organizations, and individuals to prioritize economic empowerment. By supporting Black-owned businesses and promoting economic self-sufficiency, the fraternity has been at the forefront in helping to break down economic and financial barriers.
A WORTHY INVESTMENT
The Billboard Jackson Entrepreneurial Development Program has a rich history dating back to its inception in 2000, as an integral part of the Eastern Region’s Bigger and Better Program within Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Named in honor of the esteemed Honorable Bro. James A. “Billboard” Jackson, a trailblazing corporate figure and the first Black editor (1920) of Billboard Magazine, this program stands as a testament to his legacy and commitment to fostering entrepreneurship. In 1940, Bro. Jackson became the first black member of the American Marketing Association. He later went on to become well connected with black and white professional, commercial, and industrial groups, traveling across the United States, encouraging African American commercial development and industrial training for youth.
The Billboard Jackson Entrepreneurial Development Program is a competition designed to invest in Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., who aspire to start a business. The fraternity provides start-up capital to Brothers who present outstanding business plans at Conclave. There, presentations are evaluated by an expert panel consisting of business veterans based on a rubric system. Initially, the program awarded two $1,000.00 business development grants- one to a collegiate member and another to an alumni member, who presented exceptional business plans. In 2015, the program became a component of the Fraternity’s Sigma Business Initiative which is the networking and small business support arm of the fraternity’s Bigger and Better Business Program. It was also expanded beyond the fraternity’s Eastern Region to include all seven regions of the fraternity. The expansion opened the doors for members from all regions of the fraternity to vie for these coveted development grants. Each winner, (one collegiate and one alumni Brother) of the competition are now recognized with a $20,000.00 international business development grant to assist in their start-up venture. Through the years, past grant recipients have transformed their ventures into thriving multi-million-dollar enterprises, a testament to the program’s impact.
Bro. Ben Alston, Kappa Beta Sigma and Eastern Region Director of Bigger and Better Business became involved with the Billboard Jackson Program during his tenure as the New York State Director from 2015 to 2020. “I actively encouraged brothers within New York to participate in the Program.” As Bro. Alston’s role expanded, becoming the Eastern Region’s Director of Bigger Better Business, he assumed the role as the chair of the competition. Since then, his participation and engagement in the program has grown significantly, allowing him to further contribute to its success and impact within the fraternity.
The Billboard Jackson Entrepreneurial Development Program isn’t just a program— it’s a lifeline for members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., who harbor dreams of entrepreneurship or may already be engaged in the business world. According to Bro. Alston, “it’s all about investing in your potential. Imagine yourself standing tall in front of a distinguished panel of experts at Conclave, presenting your business plan with fervor and conviction. It’s more than just a presentation—it’s your chance to showcase your vision, your dedication, and
The inaugural international competition took place in 2016, drawing submissions from a pool 32 ambitious businesses. From this pool, eight outstanding finalists were selected, earning the opportunity to present their innovative plans at IHQ. The culminating event occurred in September 2016, coinciding with Phi Beta Sigma’s participation in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, further elevating the significance and impact of the program on a national stage.
shared, sold, or copied by any other entity; (6) Program participants manage their own financial requirements to attend program competitions on all levels. Region and State Directors of the Bigger and Better Business Program determine region and state grant amounts if they host the program on a region and/or state level. All business plans for regional winners must be submitted to the International Director of Bigger and Better Business at bbb@phibetasigma1914. org by the Regional Director of Bigger and Better Business.
Bro. Alston has a number of goals for the program. “One major aim is to encourage more participation from both collegiate and alumni members. We believe that involving a wide range of brothers will help create a dynamic and inclusive entrepreneurial competition.” Another important goal is to secure additional sponsorship for the program. Bro. Alston clearly understands the significance of having strong financial backing to ensure the continued growth and success of the Billboard Jackson Entrepreneurial Development Program. He notes “by forming strategic partnerships and attracting more sponsors, we can offer our members even more resources and opportunities to succeed in their entrepreneurial pursuits.”
your determination to succeed.” It’s easy to apply, simply fill out your regional application, each regional competition will award two grants- one for a collegiate member and another for an alumni member, who demonstrate exceptional business acumen, business planning, and delivers a compelling presentation. The business plan will be meticulously evaluated at the regional level, and the best of the best will advance to compete for international grants during Conclave.
The Billboard Jackson Entrepreneurial Development Program has awarded over $100,000.00 since 2000! Regional awardees receive from $500.00 to $2,000.00 as collegiate and alumni winners. The grants are presented to the business the Brother is representing. Some of the basics of the competition are: (1) All Brothers submitting a plan must be in good financial standing with the fraternity at all levels; (2) The business must have or be in the process of securing a legal entity and a DUNS number; (3) Business plans may be submitted by teams if all members of the team have the same membership status with the fraternity; (4) Plans may be submitted for new or existing business ventures if the plan is the original creation of the Brother or team participating in the competition; (5) Information contained in the plans are not
The program is not without its challenges. Bro. Alston states that “one of the challenges we’ve encountered is ensuring that contestants are consistently prepared and engaged. While some regions have shown strong enthusiasm, others have faced difficulties meeting our expectations. Additionally, we’ve experienced instances where participants were not fully prepared to present their business plans.” Bro. Alston goes on to say that “in order to tackle these issues, each Bigger and Better Business Regional Director is making a great effort to work with and support program participants in their respective regions. This involves offering coaching and pairing them with mentors to provide guidance and assistance, as necessary. As a team, we’re committed to moving forward by increasing our marketing efforts. We will continue to be intentional about showcasing the program’s importance within the fraternity and underscore the benefits it offers to our members.”

“With the creation of our International Bigger and Better Business Program in 1924, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity continues to advocate for and provide resources to establish greater independence for our people through economics, including the promotion of opportunity and parity within the African American community.
An essential tool in the Fraternity’s programming has been educating our communities to become financially literate and secure through investment in real estate ownership and development. Democracy in Housing
The National Association of Real Estate Brothers, Inc. (NAREB) has been in existence since 1947. It was established to secure equal housing opportunities for all people regardless of race, color, creed , or religion.
NAREB is the oldest minority real estate trade association in the country. It is comprised principally of Black Americans, and NAREB welcomes the membership of all who support the NARED mission.
NAREB was founded at a time following World War II, as Black Americans’ aspirations for a better life in America were emerging. Black Americans were making gains, especially in employment and during that time the Supreme Court struck down the enforceability of restrictive covenants and private agreements to exclude specified races from the ownership and occupancy of real property in exclusively white neighborhoods. See

Shelley v. Kraemer, 334 U.S. 1 (1948).
Despite the ruling, discrimination in housing still prevailed, and spurred the founders of the NAREB to come together in its formation, on the promise of Equal Housing Opportunity for All.
The NAREB adopted a mission to ‘enhance the professional and business conditions of its members by strengthening the consumer capacity of Black, minority, and emerging target market segments.’ (https://www.nareb.com/) They also committed to promote the real estate industry ‘utilizing economic, political, legal, and social leverage to remediate disparate and discriminatory housing and property ownership policies and practices prevailing in the United States.’
This mission was borne from the vision to ‘foster the expansion of inter-generational wealth creation by Black households through promotion and retention of elevating levels of real property ownership investments sustained by NAREB’s enduring commitment to preservation and fulfillment of their credo, ‘Democracy in Housing.’ See the NAREB website for more information. https://www.nareb. com/
The Program
According to BB&B Director Gibson, “This is an excellent opportunity for Sigma Chapters to work with local NAREB city chapters to form partnerships to assist the Brotherhood and our communities with promoting educational programs on the real estate industry in general, utilizing economic, political, legal and social leverages to remediate disparate and discriminatory housing and property ownership policies and practices prevailing in the county.”
The partnership will (1) foster the expansion of inter-generational wealth creation by Black households through promotion and retention of elevating levels of real property ownership investments sustained by NAREB’s enduring commitment to preservation and fulfillment of NAREB’s credo, ‘Democracy in Housing;’ (2) educate
communities and provide resources on the real estate industry; and (3) advocate against disparate and discriminatory housing and property ownership policies and practices.
The program provides many options for Chapters to get involved, primarily through workshop facilitations and the matching of community needs with the services and resources of the NAREB. Engaging both in-person and virtual events will maximize reach and exposure, thus increasing potential and opportunities for communities/families/ Brothers to develop sound plans for economic development and for the strategies of promising generational wealth and community development based upon economic investment. NAREB is available to consult with Chapters and so is Sigma’s International BB&B Committee to ensure adequate planning, marketing, evaluation, and documentation of all chapter programming.
The Memorandum of Understanding
To document this program, Sigma and NAREB have established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work collaboratively and cooperatively: (1) to promote increased awareness to Sigma members and communities of color regarding Bigger and Better Business and Building Black Wealth through real estate; and (2) to facilitate greater access and sustainable levels of homeownership by Black Americans, low-to-moderate income market segments, and other minority/under-served market segments of potential homebuyers.
HON. BRO. CHARLES TALBERT
The MOU is thorough and exhaustive, with possibilities and opportunities for Sigma Chapters to offer in conjunction with NAREB numerous resources to sponsor several specific events and activities:
• Facilitating presentations, joint seminars, workshops, and forums identifying and/or developing perspective Black homebuyers;
• Facilitating presentations, joint seminars, workshops, and/or forums regarding economic development, Bigger and Better Business and Building Black Wealth;
• Developing and publishing a series of recurring, multi-media public information, and national marketing campaigns designed to promote awareness of homeownership opportunities/benefits and increase levels of Black homeownership and wealth;
• Providing homebuyer/ homeowner education, retention and estate planning programs, and services to generate and support increased levels of sustainable homeownership and
generational wealth by Black and diverse market segments; and
• Collaborating on the formulation of mutually agreed projects and initiatives that educate and uplift underserved communities and that create economic development and opportunities for residents.

impact deals with the elevation of ourselves and our communities – if you will, a service component but also a component of self-help and community selfcare. Greater Black Wealth is attainable – and there’s enough for us all!! Our resources and this partnership will help us to achieve those goals and to serve our communities well in the process. I encourage each Chapter to commit some time to the partnership with the NAREB – that time will be very well spent.”
Following the April 13 Community Impact Day, the NAREB has provided a survey and personal contact to all participants as well as a Freddie Mac-NAREB Black Wealth Toolkit
(https://sf.freddiemac.com/docs/pdf/black-wealthtoolkit.pdf). Next will be workshops in June as part of Home Ownership Month. The Building Black Wealth Tour continues, and the NAREB membership will convene July 31-August 4, 2024 in New Orleans for the NAREB National Convention.
Finally, the partnership with NAREB has been building with followers and Sigma supporters and participants
across the county. Sigma’s ongoing social media blitz has provided greater awareness of some of the current activities established by this program and the resulting successes:
The Building Black Wealth Tour was established in 2023 and is coming to a city near you! Brothers and the public can participate in a series of free workshops, executed by Sigma and the NAREB. Topics range from careers in real estate, providing free credit reports, how to build good credit and leverage it, to meetings with housing counselors, meetings with lenders, and meetings with real estate professionals. Future cities include Little Rock, New Orleans, Atlanta and Los
Angeles. See the social media flyer below for examples of the types of workshops that are being presented.
The social media post below provides the schedule of cities through August, 2025 and for more information please visit: www.NAREBblackwealthtour.com.

The pandemic also wreaked havoc on businesses of all sizes but especially small Black-owned businesses, many who either dissolved as a direct consequence of the pandemic or barely survived. Bro. Michael Harvey, Upsilon Zeta Sigma Chapter and Black Spend Team Lead for the International Bigger and Better Business Program, lay witness to the daily disproportionate impact the pandemic had on the Black community on every level. “Seeing black businesses being dissolved represented people. I saw mothers, fathers, life savings, and generational wealth being discharged. According to CNN Business, 41% of black-owned businesses across America dissolved between February and April 2020.” By September 2020, Bro. Harvey had seen enough, and the Black Spend Initiative was born.
The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Bigger and Better Business Program has been active since 1925. The impetus of the program was the encouragement of negro businesses to improve their business acumen, efficiency and service to the public in order to favorably compete with other businesses. Today, nearly a century later, as a component of the fraternity’s Bigger and Better Business Program, the Black Spend Initiative’s charge is to keep “our” money in “our” community. In other words, investing economically in communities of businesses that look like us. The target audience of the Black Spend Initiative are Chapter Brothers, the community, and Black-owned businesses.
Black spending power in America grew from $320 billion in 1990 to $1.4 trillion in 2019. However, various studies (proven or unproven) on the racial wealth gap in America calculates that a dollar circulates for six hours in the Black community compared to 20 days in the Jewish community and 30 days in the Asian community. Furthermore, studies showed that Blacks only spend $0.02 per dollar with Black-owned businesses. The truth of the matter is that economies of
scale make the goods and services offered by small businesses in our communities likely more expensive than those at a Walmart or Target. Levels of wealth and income in our communities may also impact our spending outside of our communities based on a survival necessity. Undoubtedly, this may account for the relatively lower spend dollars when compared with other communities.
The Black Spend Initiative has grown exponentially from $186K spent in 2020 to over $11 million spent in 2023, with the Gulf Coast Region chapters leading the way. Since 2020, the fraternity has reported over $29 million spent at Black-owned businesses. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey, the number of Black-owned businesses
in America has increased since the pandemic, up 14% since 2020. Particularly, businesses owned by Black women grew by 42%. However, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center, only 60% of Black adults surveyed believed that bolstering and patronizing Black-owned businesses is one of the most important strategies for fighting racial inequality in America. Other ethnic businesses have learned to monetize off of the Black culture more effectively than we have!
Bro. Harvey has set several goals, expectations, and deliverables for the Black Spend Initiative. One goal is to broaden the net to expand the fraternity’s mindset regarding all categories of black spend. Black spend is not only focused on known or familiar establishments such as barbers/hair salons, restaurants, and nail shops. Bro. Harvey defines broadening the net as “expanding our knowledge of additional Black-owned business options such as insurance agents/providers, franchisees, contactors, legal services, transportation services, auto mechanics, plumbers, childcare providers, and more. There are many black-owned business options available to spend Black dollars.” Additional goals and desired outcomes that Bro. Harvey sees as priorities include: (1) Building relationships with Black-owned businesses through the Fraternity’s Adopt-A-Business initiative and sharing their marketing acumen through various social media platforms; (2) Documenting the increase of Black-owned business’s visibility in communities we serve; (3) Investing in Black-owned businesses and facilitating the sharing of business resources with new black-owned business owners; (4) Documenting programming that will expand the awareness of community-based Black-owned businesses; and (5) Leveraging MOUs that would provide a return on investment (ROI) for the fraternity by extending the recurring Black Spend Concept and developing improved ways to communicate the “wins” of the Black Spend Initiative.
How can Phi Beta Sigma better implement the Black Spend initiative? A part of “our cause” is to become change agents. We have the opportunity to become change agents by making a significant economic impact on black-owned businesses through our spending. Bro. Harvey recommends that (1) Chapters identify Black-owned businesses in the communities they serve and be challenged to spend a specific amount of Chapter funds in the implementation of Sigma events and/or activities; (2) Each Chapter should designate a Brother to document Black Spend by their Chapter and report it via the fraternity’s Program Implementation Assessment (P.I.A.) tool; (3) Chapters can also host Black Spend educational activities as a part of their annual program events; (4) All Brothers can be engaged in this initiative.
Bro. Harvey suggests that the Black Spend Initiative should be viewed as low-hanging fruit. “It’s not simply about spending our money with black-owned businesses but establishing relationships with these same businesses in the communities we serve.” Building new partnerships is essential to opening up avenues for opportunities for job creation and business stability. Supporting Black-owned businesses through the Black Spend Initiative is not racism! It is simply the economic support of businesses that look like us and an attempt at leveling the playing field. Bro. Harvey shared that some of the “wins” of the initiative include “credit and generational wealth building, creating more opportunities for meaningful savings, and property ownership. In addition, supporting Black-owned businesses attracts community investors who provide banking services, loans, and promote financial literacy. When you support Black-owned businesses, you get products that are valuable for the character they bring. You also vote with your dollar by divesting from problematic companies and holding companies accountable. As a result, you empower successful minority-owned businesses to implement equitable policies.”
Bro. Harvey adds that “in order for the Black Spend Initiative to continue to expand and be sustainable, we have to become change agents. For years, small businesses have been wealth builders and the fabric of the black community. However, we have to adapt to our ever-evolving societies with expanded knowledge of the available options of professional services and products black-owned businesses now offer.”
By supporting more Black-owned businesses, we not only enact change, but we also affect change in the mindset and spend practices of our communities for generations to come. As a Brotherhood “Empowering Generations of Men to BELIEVE in Advocacy, Community Service and Engagement”, it’s up to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. to be a change agent. Our cause speeds on its way!

EmpoweringEntrepreneurs:Sigma
THE SIGMA BUSINESS
NETWORK
By Bro. Julio Sáenz
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is proud to announce the establishment of the Sigma Business Network, an innovative new platform dedicated to uplifting and supporting the entrepreneurial endeavors of Sigma men nationwide. Our new website, www. sigmabusiness.org, serves as the cornerstone of the Bigger and Better Business Program’s latest initiative to foster growth, education, and wealth-building within our community of business owners.
The Sigma Business Network (SBN) is not just a directory; it’s a dynamic ecosystem designed to forge powerful connections and provide essential resources. It stands as a beacon for collaboration, designed to elevate our brothers in the business world by offering unparalleled networking opportunities, educational materials, wealth guidance, and advocacy support.
“Our primary objective is to provide networking, educational, wealth-building, and advocacy support to members of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity who are entrepreneurs,” says Bro. Ben Alston, who leads the SBN Committee. “Through the SBN, business owners not only have the opportunity to enhance their brand presence but also become part of a lively community where success thrives.”
“Networking is the breath of Ceewix Candles and any business. Without networking my small business would have never gotten off the ground,” said Bro. Chad Livingston, owner of Ceewix Candles, who has listed his business on the site. “Without consistent networking we would not have been able to remain in business for the past three years.”
The Sigma Business Network functions through a systematic and interactive process:
Sigma brothers can create a detailed profile of their business on the website at no cost. The profile not only enhances their visibility through key information such as services offered, hours of operation, and ways to contact the business, but also includes photos and personal stories that connect with customers and convey the genuine Sigma spirit.
The committed administrators at the Sigma Business Network take the time to thoroughly examine each business profile. They ensure that all information presented is accurate and reflects the fraternity’s values. They also provide continuous support and feedback to perfect every business’s listing.
Access to list a business is exclusively granted to fraternity members in good standing with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. This selective approach fosters a network that members can trust, one that is consistent with the fraternity’s principles and commitment to outstanding quality.
Brother Alston emphasizes the importance of supporting active members of the network. “We take immense pride in businesses owned by our Sigma brethren. The network’s platform is designed to acknowledge and showcase these businesses’ contributions, both within our fraternity and the wider community. Encouraging support through patronage and recommendations, we aim to build a strong network of support for our business owners.”
“Networking is essential to obtaining new clients,” says Bro. Maurice Emanuel, who listed his Cherry Hill, New Jersey-based business, Computax Services on the site. “It’s important in receiving information from others that can help you with building your business… I now have a frat brother from my chapter who is going to assist me with servicing one of my tax clients.”
However, the Sigma Business Network is more than just a directory. It is a treasure trove of other valuable resources. This includes practical guides for starting a business and a compilation of contracts and grants available, which are aimed at promoting business growth and development.
A core value of the network is transparency and tracking progress. The administrators actively monitor the expansion of the Sigma Business Network, providing consistent monthly updates to the International Bigger and Better Business Team, ensuring that they’re always advancing collectively.
Moreover, the involvement of the Regional Directors from the Bigger and Better Business are pivotal. They are devoted to motivating local chapters and their business-owning members to participate in the network.
There’s no financial cost for Sigma business owners at any point. It is a foundational belief that economic empowerment and wealth creation are crucial for enhancing the quality of life in our communities. Through unity, support, and shared success, www.sigmabusiness. org is more than a network—it’s a movement towards economic prosperity and community empowerment.
“Entrepreneurship is extremely important for communities of color because it’s all about taking control of our economic destiny and making things happen,” says Bro. Alston. “When we start our own businesses right in our own neighborhoods, we’re not just making money — we’re creating jobs, building wealth, and meeting the needs of our community and it’s our way of breaking through those tough systemic barriers, showing our kids they can do anything, and inspiring them to become business owners too.”
Together, we’re set to forge a new legacy of success for Sigma entrepreneurs, guaranteeing a shared prosperity and establishing a robust groundwork for the Sigma leaders of tomorrow. Let’s unite to cultivate a thriving future for every Sigma-owned business.
When Bro. Alston is asked what he would say to that brother who is sitting on their couch with an idea of a new business, he quickly replies, “What’s holding you back from starting your own business? I get it, it can feel overwhelming at first, but remember, every great success story began with just an idea. Take that crucial first step by jotting down your idea and doing some research.” He adds, “Within PBS, our Bigger and Better Business team offers a wealth of resources to support your entrepreneurial journey. So, seize the moment and get that idea off of the couch and start bringing it to life!”

Empowered & Engaged: PHI BETA SIGMA & MACY’S
TWO HISTORIC BRANDS IN PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE A BRIGHTER FUTURE IN REPRESENTATION
FOR 100 YEARS
Phi Beta Sigma’s multi-faceted Bigger and Better Business program has fostered economic support for minority-owned businesses throughout the nation. To maximize the organization’s ability to empower Black entrepreneurship and impact economic growth in communities of color, the Fraternity aligns with corporate giants committed to the same purpose.
Such a partnership is Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity’s engagement with Macy’s, an icon, hallmark brand and household name in the US for more than 160 years. The retail institution is proudly established as a brand platform that puts customers at the center of their actions, embracing individuality and self-expression, enabling customers to own their style with them.
“Representation matters when you consider advancing opportunities for people of every hue,” shares Hon. Chris V. Rey, International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. “When I read and understood Macy’s guided purpose, which is to create a brighter future with bold representation – that empowers more voice, choice and ownership for our colleagues, customers and communities, I resolved it to be in perfect alignment with Phi Beta Sigma.”
This investment is part of a bold new chapter for
Macy’s Inc., which Tony Spring, Chief Executive Officer & Chairman-Elect calls a bold new chapter that serves as a strong call to action. “It challenges the status quo to create a more modern Macy’s Inc. We are making the necessary moves to reinvigorate relationships with our customers through improved shopping experiences, relevant assortments and compelling value.”
Since the early 2000s, Macy’s has made business case for diversity with a focus on compliance and representation and more. In 2018, the Diversity & Inclusion Center of Expertise was established with a vision to be the beacon of diversity, equity and inclusion for colleagues, customers and communities and a mission to embed all three areas in how they think, act and operate.
In 2022, the company launched a new enterprise- wide social purpose platform, Mission Every One. The initiative expresses the understanding that consumers have a rising expectation that how companies do business is just as important as what they sell. The social purpose is a strategy and framework that supports Macy’s business transformation taking the company from a position of legacy to leadership. A signature commitment of $5 Billion is directed to Macy’s commitment to people, partners, products and programs by 2025 to create a more equitable and sustainable future of style.
MACY’S HONORS THE DIVINE NINE
In recognition and celebration of the legacy and impact of the five historically Black-founded fraternities of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Macy’s has developed an exclusive and versatile product collection. Inspired by the signature colors of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and the other four fraternities, this new assortment include polos, blazers, cardigans, accessories and more. The collection is exclusively available online at Macys.com and in-store at select locations, with all pieces available by July 2024.
Through Macy’s social purpose platform, Mission Every One, the collection is part of the brand’s longtime commitment to empowering leaders of today and tomorrow. This new menswear collection compliments the Sorority collection, which launched in 2022.
“As a proud member of The Divine Nine, I am thrilled to provide members with a collection that reflects their organization’s mission and history while empowering members to express their personal style,” said Brother Elwyn Mapps, Macy’s Vice President, Men’s Sportswear and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity member. “This assortment authentically represents each organization by featuring signature colors and speaks to their dedication to academic excellence, community service and brotherhood. Additionally, through our social purpose platform, Macy’s will provide funding to a variety of foundations selected by The Divine Nine Fraternities to help create a brighter future with bold representation.”
The vision and idea began in late 2021 by WyQuasia King, former Macy’s Buyer for dresses and member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Soror King saw a unique opportunity to address sorority sisters’ wardrobe needs for specific attire to wear to ceremonies, conferences and events. King shared her vision with the NPHC Council of Presidents to create a capsule of apparel in the signature colors that could be available all year long at Macy’s. The Sorority collection by The Kasper Group offers customers an evolving product assortment for signature events and conferences.
“As my brainchild, this is something that was thoughtfully curated by design for the brothers and sisters of The Divine Nine as organizations with the same true dedication, passion and scholarship,” shares Soror King. “I wanted us to get that recognition. That’s why the donation aspect became crucial, so that it can continue the efforts that we do. And why we need to show up essentially looking good in these colors. It was a branding moment for The Divine Nine and a way for us to receive our fair share in the fashion industry, which, by the way, we have the highest buying power.”
The exclusive Fraternity collection features tailored items such as suit separates, sport coats, neckwear, hats and dress shirts in a variety of styles and sizes. The new line provides members with a variety of options to celebrate their personal styles and represent the organization at a variety of events, including Conclaves, Founders’ Day events, business meetings, conferences and more. The assortment was created in partnership with Tayion Collection, founded and designed by Montee Holland, a graduate of The Workshop at Macy’s and S.P.U.R. Pathways participant.
A COLLABORATION BEYOND THE FASHION
“What started as a vision, an idea, from a colleague, one Soror – born out of a need expressed by members of the organizations – turned into a collection, which then evolved into a meaningful and impactful collaboration,” says Simone Laws, Senior Director of DE&I Marketing and Community at Macy’s. “Over the past few years, we’ve built these relationships at the national level and have taken actions to move our aligned missions and communities forward together, because we recognize so much more, together.”
Phi Beta Sigma’s leaders enthusiastically approved Macy’s pitch to partner and is taking full advantage of the resources that a partnership with the historic brand offers. The partnership benefits include Career Pathways, a talent pipeline that attract and match Sigma members with available positions across Macy’s, Inc. with a focus on the collegiate level.
Macy’s social purpose supports Sigma’s national programs and signature events and initiatives demonstrating the shared values aligned with Mission Every One.
The Macy’s team has been fully engaged with Phi Beta Sigma supporting programs focused on minority-owned businesses and their growth.
At Conclave Houston, Macy’s team members served as judges for the Billboard Jackson Entrepreneurial Competition and accepted the winning Sigma Entrepreneurs into The Workshop at Macy’s and S.P.U.R. Pathways.
The Macy’s Team, along with Montee Holland facilitated heavily-attended Dress for Success Workshops at the Fraternity’s 2024 Great Lakes Regional Conference in Indianapolis, IN and Western Regional Conference in Phoenix, AZ.
“By the time this year ends, Macy’s will have donated over $2M cumulatively to various D9 education and research foundations in celebration of the collection,” shares Simone. The PBS Impact Foundation will receive a $100,000 donation in January 2025 to fund an area of the Fraternity’s choosing for greater impact.
WYQUASIA KING FASHION RETAIL CONSULTANT
“I envisioned a Divine Nine curated Concept Shop experience offered by Macy’s,” shares WyQuasia King, then Director Buyer of Day Dresses at Macy’s. “Where Macy’s becomes licensed vendors with each organization offering specialized spaces in 50 locations carrying the celebrated collections for cardcarrying D9 members; pulling in shoes, accessories and jewelry. In my mind, when I first saw this project, the women were the first but it went beyond to include the fraternities.”
This is the original vision and idea that has now unfolded as Macy’s honoring the history of The Divine Nine through a fashion collection first launched in 2021 for the Sororities and now expanded to include the Fraternities. WyQuasia is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
After pitching the project and initially faced with several internal challenges, Soror King, thanks to a divine mission and purpose, persevered solo to push the vision to reality. Her groundbreaking work to bring this project to fruition was a labor of divine purpose for King. She used much of her own resources, industry relationships and realpeople connections to appropriately brand the collection’s initial visual communications and marketing.
Merchandising products and services to the Black population
requires representation at the table of decision makers in retail. They make the decisions as to what consumers buy. A lack of representation in merchandising trickles into products seen daily by consumers. “I had to claim that space and emphasize the importance of making sure that Black women are represented in these photos,” shares King. “An advisory board is needed--that centralized thinking that understands the proper way to market the brands and show that piece of diversity. Having those voices and thoughts in the room during merchandising decisions are important.”
In 2022, after lessons learned from the sorority launch the previous year, for the fraternity iteration King pushed and fought for a Black male vendor – a strategic placement of Montee Holland’s Tayion Collection and for the initial press coverage to release in a black publication.
Through the company’s social purpose Mission Every One, the Macy’s team has expanded their involvement with the D9 to include workshops, seminars, and conference sponsorships -- all strategic; a part of the plan envisioned by Soror King.
Soror King shares her hopes for the collection. “This is a great opportunity. I do hope when the collection sells out that true investments are made internally at Macy’s to protect this initiative and take it further.”
THE TORCHBEARER
SIMONE LAWS SENIOR DIRECTOR
DE&I MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS
MACY’S, INC.
Macy’s is on a mission to create brighter futures with bold representation for all people. They call it: Mission Every One – a clear commitment to people, partners, products and programs that create a more equitable and sustainable future.
Carrying the campaign’s torch lit by WyQuasia King is Simone Laws, Senior Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Marketing and Communications.
“I’m proud that one such commitment has been a growing partnership between Macy’s and The Divine Nine,” says Laws. “And the commitment has been keeping us busy! We’re providing visibility and access to internships and career opportunities at their career fairs and through job boards on their websites.”
Understanding the incredible value of The Divine Nine’s massive purchasing power in the retail market is “Business 101” for some Macy’s team leads. Simone is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and is committed to assuring
that Macy’s engagement and investment to the partnership remains a top priority with the retail giant. She personally represents the team at D9 events. “We’ve served as judges during pitch competitions and hosting webinars, sharing ways to access capital, customers and education via the Macy’s ecosystem,” shares Laws. “We’ve facilitated workshops at Phi Beta Sigma national and regional conferences about the do’s and don’ts of style and fashion and actual members are modeling the Collection, something we heard has been appreciated especially in acknowledging this collection was inspired by the D9.”
Laws emphasizes “This partnership represents more than just apparel. It’s about recognizing the work that Phi Beta Sigma men do to remove barriers in education for our young people and drive economic empowerment for underrepresented and underfunded communities, and hey – and finding looks that compliments their style as you do so!”
THE POWER PLAYER
ELWYN
MAPPS VICE
PRESIDENT
MEN’S SPORTSWEAR MACY’S, INC.
The pride of Phi Beta Sigma is perfectly reflected in the delightful blend of blue hues and pure white garments making up the Fraternity’s Divine Nine collection by Macy’s. The Sigma pride was elevated even more when the Brothers discovered a Sigma Man was a key player in the development of the new project.
Brother Elwyn Mapps was the Vice President of Stores in Washington, DC when Macy’s launched the initial collection for The Divine Nine Sororities in 2021. He later transitioned as VP of Men’s Sportswear, with perfect timing, placing him in position to work with the Fraternities’ collection.
“I’m excited about the collection on several fronts,” shares Elwyn. “It is a way that Macy’s is showing up and being relevant in the communities that we’re a part of. As we think about our customers, one of our goals is to show up in the ways that they need us, so that they can showcase their personal style. This was WyQuasia’s brainchild, and I was in a different position when the women’s collection was launched, and I was definitely inspired and thought to myself if we ever have a chance to do something for Brothers, it would be a great opportunity. Knowing the level of excitement and the great feedback that I’ve gotten from within and outside the fraternity are super encouraging.”
Mapps and his team play a significant role in the entire process. They’re responsible for buying and assortment planning for men’s and young men’s collections. Most of the popular men’s vendors that’s seen in Macy’s, he’s in charge of owning. “As it pertains to this collection particularly,” says Elwyn. “I had a hand in the product development and assortment offered, like sweaters to golf. And I will continue to have a role in the product development as we look to understand what it could be in the future.”
The foundation of Mapps’ energy is his love for people and his long-term service with Macy’s, Inc. From a part-time job 21 years ago after obtaining an engineering degree to moving around the country with the magic of Macy’s, he has a keen understanding of what the retail business is really about. “For me, retail is indeed a lot about numbers and fashion, but it’s really a people-business, which I enjoy the most. Meeting Montee was a great pleasure. Working with partners like him and partnermerchants outside of our group like Simone is what keeps me energized with work. I love fashion and I love helping people bring their personal style to life.”
Brother Mapps joined the Fraternity on April 12, 2000 at Texas A&M University and is currently a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Chapter.
When asked what his hope for the future of the collection is, he shares, “I think as our members support this initiative our assortment can grow and Macy’s can show up from a merchandise perspective in broader categories. We can do more items that can make people feel great. Secondly, what I hope is that this step forward that Macy’s has taken is a sign to other companies that organizations, like Phi Beta Sigma, are forces to reckon with and have tons of buying power. We have large memberships that continue to grow and our dollar is powerful. I hope people see our partnerships with Macy’s and say “Oh boy, that’s a group that I can invest in, who’s active in our communities, and who will be great business partners. My hope as a Sigma Brother is that this is a launching board for other great partnerships. As a Macy’s executive, that we continue to grow and do more sales, but that’s secondary to what this can signal to the business community at-large.”
THE FASHION CREATOR
MONTEE TAYION HOLLAND PRESIDENT/CEO & DESIGNER TAYION COLLECTION
Representation matters and WyQuasia King, then Senior Buyer for Macy’s understood the assignment—a Black-owned and designed vendor was mandatory for the success of The Divine Nine Collection for Fraternities. Montee Holland’s Tayion Collection, a graduate of The Workshop at Macy’s and S.P.U.R. Pathways participant, was chosen to hold the space.
“I’m extremely excited about my relationship with Macy’s and The Divine Nine Fraternities project because Macy’s understands that they have a diverse customer who transcends generational gaps,” shares Holland. “The Tayion customer is in complete alignment. We have young as well as older customers – customers who want to take that conservative piece and add a little twist to it. We offer that product.”
The Tayion Collection offers a fashionable product that can be appropriate in all arenas. It’s interchangeable, where the customer can go from work to an extra-curricular activity—take those pieces to mix and match and build the right wardrobe for the occasion that matters. It’s a versatile line from fashionable to modernchic, all the way to black-tie.
Holland’s collaboration with Macy’s Divine Nine Collection amplifies a core belief of the fraternal movement in business: supporting economic empowerment and the advancement of minority-owned businesses. The project is opening direct partnership opportunities for Holland and the Fraternities. “Montee joined the Macy’s team in facilitating a Dress for Success Workshop at Phi Beta Sigma’s Great Lakes Regional Conference in Indianapolis,” says Brother Steve E. Ballard, Director of Communications. “The company is supporting the production of The Crescent, the
Fraternity’s official publication with clothing and has begun conversations around collaborating on future Sigmabranded apparel for Blu Culture Collections.”
The principles that drive Holland and his collection makes for a perfect collaborator with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Mentorship is a lifelong priority, “In fact, my passion for assisting young people with the opportunity to attend college is as strong as my passion for the Tayion Collection. I’m extremely proud that I have garnered more than 50 full ride scholarships for student athletes over the years. My goal is to help cultivate as many diverse leaders, business professionals and minority entrepreneurs as I can.”
The future looks quite bright for Holland. “We’re looking forward to expanding the categories within Macy’s, forging new partnerships with the Fraternities, continuing our marketing efforts letting the world know that this exciting brand is, in fact, on Macy’s.com, on the floor and looking forward to styling as men many as possible across the country.”
THE SIGMA REPRESENTATION
The job to select good representatives for Phi Beta Sigma for The Divine Nine Collection fell on Brother Steve E. Ballard, Director of Communications. The Sigma models had to reside within the New York City area, where Macy’s studio is located. Ballard combed the websites, Facebook pages and social media handles of the area chapters and chose two great representatives, as well as an alternate.
“My aim was to select brothers who represented a diversity in appearance -- indicative of our membership,” shares Brother Ballard. “Additionally, I hoped that the members who I chose were seriously committed to serving the Fraternity. We were fortunate, as Brothers Clifford Mondesir and Cortez Stallings are truly dedicated Sigma Men on many levels. Selecting them for this opportunity was simply a reward for their dedicated service.”

From late-night roundtable discussions with multiple chapters to leadership dialogues on the alumni level, the opportunity to enact change in our communities was a dream come true for Mondesir. “Transitioning to an alumni chapter with a rich history, and standing alongside those who paved the way, was a mission I embraced wholeheartedly. Thus far, in his Sigma career, Bro. Mondesir has served as president of Xi Epsilon, a Collegiate Advisor, in various positions on the Kappa Beta Sigma Executive Board, an Area Deputy Director for New York State, Mentor Coordinator in the Eastern Region, and Eastern Region Life Member Liaison. BROTHER ROLAND SEWARD
The career of Brother Roland Seward is an example of how one can become successful in spite of adversity. Brother Seward is the owner/operator of Mélange Wellness (Laurel, Maryland) a self-care and fitness program designed to enhance mind, body and spirit. His offerings include massage therapy and yoga instruction, as well as one-on-one and small group fitness training. Like the proverbial “phoenix rising from the ashes”, Roland has seen his vision to promote self-care grow significantly since its inception, providing a unique mixture (mélange) of options for his clients.
Interestingly, Brother Seward began considering his vision as he graduated high school and went directly into the Armed Services as a cook. Cooking for hundreds kept him busy and at times stressed. He began fitness training to relax and to build up his lean frame. The results of his ‘hobby’ were astonishing! Fitness training turned out to be his passion—his military leaders saw how he worked to build his physique and encouraged others to do the same. So they moved him from the kitchen to the gym, to help soldiers increase their physical fitness scores. Those who worked with him saw their scores go from barely passing to near perfect! When Roland completed his military service he decided to continue his work and become a personal fitness trainer.
As he continued to excel in his calling, Brother Seward decided to try competing on the television show American Ninja Warrior. His good fortune took him to the semi-finalist level, where he experienced a significant fall during a training session. The injury he incurred appeared to be career-ending— but Roland did not give up! He decided to forego the doctor’s recommendations for rehab and took up yoga to regain his flexibility. The results of his perseverance proved to be lifechanging! He became certified in yoga instruction while regaining his ability to compete on the American Ninja Warrior for the next season.
His experiences and his tenacity led Roland Seward to develop his current self-care program, through which he has worked with people from all walks of life, including members of the U.S. Navy as well as individuals looking to build their bodies and their self-esteem!
Bro. Seward joined Phi Beta Sigma in 2017, and is currently an active member of Zeta Chi Sigma chapter in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
BROTHER
DR. ANSEL JOHNSON
He’s A Sigma Man
Brother Dr. Ansel Johnson describes himself as “just a regular brother trying to follow God’s guidance.” He is an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, IL, one of the country’s most progressive congregations with respect to its commitment to fully serving the community. Clearly his faith informs who he is—a servant using his Godgiven skills to make his community healthier.
Ansel is the founder and owner of Vision Salon Eye Care Associates, which he began as a private practice optometry clinic in 1990. Thirty-four years later, it has become the place where people can receive eye care and education on how their overall health affects their visual health. Having seen how diabetes, hypertension and related conditions wreaks havoc particularly on the health of people of color, Dr. Johnson is particularly attentive to working with clients to take proper care of their total being. So his work as a health care professional goes beyond prescribing eyewear. Vision Salon Eye Care is the first and only group in Illinois to establish and incorporate a Nationally Certified Diabetes Self-Management program into its organization. Dr. Johnson is actively involved in clinical trials and studies to ensure that people of color are included in current treatment programs, as well as state of the art technologies for diabetes management and glaucoma. In 2020 he founded the Healthy Living With a Vision Foundation, to address and eliminate disparities in care for communities which have been underserved.
But his practice is not limited to the office in suburban Blue Island which he operates. Ansel provides seminars and workshops for churches and community organizations throughout the Chicagoland area. He is a certified lifestyle coach for the CDC Diabetes Prevention Program and is on the medical team at Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago and provides externships for future optical professionals.
Brother Johnson has been honored for his life’s work by the Presidential administration of Bill Clinton and twice by Black Enterprises Magazine as one of the nation’s top African American doctors. He has served as an adjunct professor for various colleges and served on the Optometry Board for the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation and other boards related to his work. Somewhere between work and family, Bro. Dr. Johnson has managed to maintain being an active member of Phi Beta Sigma, which he joined as an undergraduate at Illinois Wesleyan University and currently is a member of the Epsilon Upsilon Sigma chapter.

SCOTT ABDUL SALAAM
SIFTED SUGAR is a bakery located in Winston-Salem, NC that offers a wide variety of delicious, made-from-scratch menu and custom dessert items. The bakery is co-owned by Phi Beta Sigma Brother Scott and Ta’Nisha Abdul-Salaam. Celebrity baker Ta’Nisha initially turned to baking as a way to cope with the loss of her grandmother in 2012, while Scott brings his marketing and business expertise to the business.
The duo opened Ta’Nisha Monique Cupcakes, a store-front location in 2018 with great support and have continued to experience success, even amidst the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, the Sifted Sugar rebrand was launched, while still offering all of the amazing custom and menu items to their customers. They have expanded their services to include corporate and wholesale businesses, and have landed some awesome new clients such as This Is It Soul and Seafood Restaurants headquartered in Atlanta,GA, Aramark, WSSU, WXII, and Cam’s Coffee.
“Working with a team that shares the same vision is deal, working with your wife who shares your same goals is priceless,” says Brother Abdul Salaam. “I think, for me, helping her fulfill her dreams makes this journey that much more special and rewarding. Most entrepreneurs understand the ebbs and flows of business, but working hard towards a common vision makes the hard work so rewarding, especially when it comes to seeing the fruits of your labor. We laugh, we joke and we work hard.”
Several Phi Beta Sigma members and events have commissioned Sifted Sugar as part of their special celebrations including the DSC Receptions for Hon. Brother Daryl Williams, Hon. Brother Winston O’Neal and Hon. Brother James Stephens, birthday party for Hon. Brother Daryl Prince, and more.
Commenting on the advantage of having a ready-made network in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Scott says, “utilizing the fraternity network is also so rewarding. I loved working at the Sigma Exchange (now Blu Culture Collections). The best part for me was providing product to my Brothers and the fellowship. Well, providing desserts to my Brothers is the same – the product just tastes better.”
Their celebrity client list is growing daily, and Ta’Nisha has been featured on Netflix's Sugar Rush and The Food Network, and invited as a guest judge on Buddy vs. Duff. Despite the loss of her grandmother, she now lives one of her dreams, which is baking full-time at their own shop with her family by her side.
BROTHER BRYAN NAILS
He’s A Sigma Man
Brother Bryan Nails is the owner and Executive Chef of DistinctTaste, a Washington, DC -based catering team which provides a unique menu of meals to satisfy those with “distinct” tastes. This is not your average catering service— DistinctTaste makes dishes which have been handed down through three generations of artisans who continue to take meal preparation to the next level!
DistinctTaste originated in the kitchen of Bryan’s grandmother, who prepared meals for her family as though every day was Sunday. The meals coming out of “Nana” Laura Bell Squire’s kitchen were so good that family, friends and the larger community would come to her house regularly. She loved to prepare special dishes and share them with her neighbors. She passed her culinary skills and the joy of sharing down to Bryan’s mother, who shared the joy of cooking with her son. In 2015, Brother Nails decided to share the love with the wider community, pulling together a team of chefs who wanted to do more than just prepare food. For the team of DistinctTaste, presentation is equally important. They prepare meals for small and large gatherings, all with the idea of making the meal an enjoyable experience.
Chef Bryan continues the legacy of love which his grandmother started through sharing meals with her neighbors, by giving back to the community through the Gourmet Angel Food Bank in Alexandria, Virginia. He assists in the preparation and distribution of free meals for seniors, veterans and families in the DMV. This is one of the ways in which he maintains his commitment to the Fraternity, which he joined in 2005 through the Chi chapter at Morehouse University. He is a Sapphire Life Member and 1st Vice President of Omicron Zeta Sigma in Woodbridge, Virginia.

CHI SIGMA ATTEND A. PHILIP RANDOLPH STATUE UNVEILING
Chi Sigma Chapter recently supported the A. Philip Randolph Institute - Essex County Chapter’s unveiling of a seven-foot statue of our beloved Sigma Brother Asa Phillip Randolph outside of Penn Station in Newark, New Jersey.
The unveiling was led by Mr. Jerry Owens, President of the Essex County A. Philip Randolph Institute Chapter, and financed by NJ Transit and several local New Jersey labor unions. The statue was created by local New Jersey sculptor Sterling Brown in his studio in Jersey City, New Jersey. A standing-room-only crowd of dignitaries joined the Brothers of Chi Sigma Chapter to unveil this historic statue on the 135th anniversary of Brother Randolph’s birth (April 15, 1889).
Asa Philip Randolph, a proud Sigma Man, was not just a respected labor leader and civil rights activist. He was pivotal in American history, founding the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the nation’s first major Black labor union, in 1925. His influence extended beyond labor rights, as he was one of the lead organizers of great March on Washington.
Brother Randolph helped to change the trajectory of our country because he knew what the United States could be if we were INCLUSIVE rather than EXCLUSIVE. This is not just Black history. It’s AMERICAN history! The Brothers of Chi Sigma Chapter look forward to keeping the memory of Brother Randolph alive by actively participating in the ongoing activities of the Essex County A. Philip Randolph Institute Chapter and maintaining the upkeep of the statue that is prominently displayed in their service area.

Elected officials hailed for their contributions to Californians and representing the ideals of Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta at Blu and White Gala Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) and California State Senator Steven Bradford (SD-35) were the guests of honor at the 2024 Blu and White Ball in recognition of their accomplishments serving California residents earlier this year. It has meant being part of a community that supports Finer Black women and amplifies their voices, needs, and resilience. From my passion for advancing the arts in Congress to strengthening strategic U.S.-Africa ties and diplomacy, I continue to reflect on how being a Zeta has made a difference in my life.
Soror Kamlager-Dove was given the prestigious award largely because of her work serving Californians throughout her public service tenure. PHI BETA SIGMA LOS ANGELES ALUMNI FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
LUNCHEON LIGHTS A FIRE FOR EDUCATION
The Phi Beta Sigma Los Angeles Alumni Foundation’s annual William Nickerson Jr. Scholarship Luncheon was a resounding success, raising over $24,000 for scholarships and educational initiatives. Held on July 13th, 2024, at The Guest House in View Park-Windsor Hills, the event brought together over 120 guests in a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
The theme, “Ignite the Pathway,” perfectly captured the spirit of the day. Scholarship awardees, including nine graduating high school seniors, five continuing college students, and three educators receiving Schoolie Awards, were the true stars. Their dedication to education and their commitment to their communities were an inspiration to all.
Bro. Dr. Steven J. Rice, President of Phi Beta Sigma Chapter, presented Bro. Octarve “Odie” Mitchell with The Brother of the Year Award.
Guests enjoyed a warm California welcome with cool sparkling water, prosecco, and charcuterie plates before indulging in a delicious lunch courtesy of Irma Lee’s BBQ.
Elijah Flores, a Morehouse College computer science student and scholarship recipient, spoke of his aspirations, “Once I earn my degree, it will put me in a better position so I can continue giving back to my community and inspire others to follow the same path, hopefully contributing to the advancement of African American youth.”
His words resonated with the luncheon’s theme, highlighting the potential of education to empower and uplift entire communities.
Jarrett Moore, another scholarship recipient and a Sigma Beta Scholar, added, “Community service is part of my life. I plan to continue in college and throughout my career as an engineer.” Moore’s dedication to giving back exemplifies the well-rounded individuals the scholarship program aims to support.
Jacqueline Sparrow, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and a Schoolie Award recipient, spoke to the critical role of educators. “Teachers are arguably the most important members of our society,” she remarked. “They give children purpose, set them up for success as citizens of our world, and inspire in them a drive to do well and succeed in life.” Her words underscored the importance of not only supporting students but also the educators who shape their futures.
The Phi Beta Sigma Los Angeles Alumni Foundation’s William Nickerson Jr. Scholarship Luncheon was a testament to the power of community and the transformative impact of education. By “Igniting the Pathway” for deserving students and educators, they are investing in a brighter future for all.
