Phi Beta Sigma applauds you. Your accomplishments, your countless all-nighters, your perseverance and study habits perfected; your intellect and capacity to learn have prepared you for this monumental milestone in your life’s journey – graduation. Your years of studying, and your application of the knowledge you’ve obtained and integrated into your world view have prepared you for the day after graduation and for the rest of your life. As you’re walking through those hallowed halls and out those hallowed doors of your educational institution, perhaps for the last time, you are embarking on a new life segment, and you take with you lasting memories and experiences of your educational path that have gotten you to this moment. You’ll walk through those doors, armed with knowledge, with determination, and with connections to friends and Fraternity Brothers that shall last a lifetime. You now have a reservoir of knowledge and the skills to apply that knowledge to life’s situations and challenges. Your education has prepared you for your next life segment and your Fraternity will be taking this walk with you.
You now join the ranks of the many who have similarly been provided the key that Bro. George Washington Carver references. Education is the key that will forever keep you prepared and forearmed. Education is a liberation and education is liberating. It frees you by providing you with the tools necessary to challenge society, to effect changes in your communities, and to manifest through your activities and pursuits, those ideals you have assembled through combining your classroom-obtained education with your own values set. your directions, and provide you with an arsenal of opportunities and choices that will lead you to success in whatever you undertake. Brothers, congratulations on your accomplishment! What a milestone to be proud of in this journey of your life. You have made an intentional investment for your future which will ultimately impact our communities. Nelson Mandela stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
You, brother, understand that Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is dedicated to promoting brotherhood, scholarship, and service, with our motto “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.” You understand that our mission is to develop ethical leaders who positively impact their communities through dedicated service and strong brotherhood bonds. As members of an organization of college educated men, you understand we aim to achieve this by fostering academic excellence. Graduates, thank you for holding true to promoting scholarship through your recent accomplishments. Your efforts are a testament to your dedication to being a productive and accomplished Man of Sigma.
To our newly graduated collegians (now alumni), you defied the odds and became a part of an elite percentage of African American males to earn a degree from a 4-year college or university. Kudos Brothers for giving yourselves a chance. This milestone is attributed to you being committed to scholarship and taking advantage of the opportunities
that some were not afforded. Do not make light of this accomplishment. You have created an avenue for yourself to be successful in your career field. Take a bow. You DID It.
To our brothers who earned a Masters, Specialist, or Doctoral Degree, what a way to take control of your academic future by doing the work to earn your advanced degrees. Thank you for being the example of pleasure in work and a worth of example. It is my hope that your territory is enlarged because of this investment and a deposit into your future.
