OBJECTIVE The goal of the Preparatory Department is to cultivate and nurture the God-given talent and ability of children, from kindergarten age through high school. Furthermore, the Department will seek to maintain the highest standards of artistry in order that each child may reach his or her utmost potential, whether towards the goal of music or dance as an avocation or as a profession. This aim will be accomplished through individual, group, class, and ensemble instruction given by master teachers and pedagogues who have earned a Bachelor’s degree in music or dance and/or certification in their given field of study. Each teacher freely upholds the beliefs, values and standards of Palm Beach Atlantic University as stated in its Guiding Principles. They also gladly accept the immense responsibility and privilege of fulfilling the Great Commission in using the gift of music or dance with the youth of this community. PHILOSOPHY
There are two general models for a pre-college division of a university music school, the Conservatory model and the Community School model. PBA’s mode of operation is the Conservatory model. The community school model provides instruction to the community through individual and group instruction with the emphasis on general enrichment of the students’ lives through the arts; it provides instruction in both individual and class settings in a less structured and less demanding environment. More demanding classes such as studio classes, master-classes, concerto competitions and recitals are usually not a part of the curriculum, much less a requirement. While the faculty of a community school may have some formal training and certification, it is generally not required. This particular setting works well for the music student (and parent) whose primary goal is a general working knowledge of music and some basic skills to play a particular instrument, or the dance student (and parent) whose primary goal is exercise and coordination building. The conservatory model is based on a more rigorous curriculum that meets the needs of a more serious minded student with a desire to make the arts a strong component of his/her life. The conservatory model offers basic individual and group instruction, but it also expects a much higher level of commitment from the student and parent; it is structured to enhance the student’s overall development in the Arts. Because the conservatory model views studio classes, master-classes, and recitals an integral part of the

program, they are a mandatory part of the program. The curriculum is graded, beginning with rudimentary elements of students’ discipline and taking them through beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of knowledge, skill and artistry; these advancements are graded by a mandatory jury examination each year. The faculty of the conservatory model is usually highly trained with advanced degrees in their field of expertise. Upon completion of the highest level, students are awarded a diploma in recognition of their completion and mastery of their chosen discipline. A university environment is the natural setting for the conservatory model to work, and PBA is proud to offer that kind of modus operandi. There are numerous venues in Palm Beach County and beyond that offer community-based instruction.
Guiding Principles of Palm Beach Atlantic University Palm Beach Atlantic University is a comprehensive Christian university with a core emphasis in the liberal arts. Its purpose is to offer a curriculum of studies and a program of student activities dedicated to the development of moral character, the enrichment of spiritual lives and the perpetuation of growth in Christian ideals. Founded under the providence of God with the conviction that there is a need for a university in this community that will expand the minds, develop the moral character and enrich the spiritual lives of all the people who may come within the orbit of its influence, Palm Beach Atlantic University shall stand as a witness for Jesus Christ, expressed directly through its administration, faculty and students. To assure the perpetuation of these basic concepts of its founders, it is resolved that all those who become associated with Palm Beach Atlantic University as trustees, officers, members of the faculty or of the staff, must believe in the divine inspiration of the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments; that man was directly created by God; that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin; that He is the Son of God, our Lord and Savior; that He died for the sins of all men and thereafter arose from the grave; that by repentance and the acceptance of and belief in Him, by the grace of God, the individual is saved from eternal damnation and receives eternal life in the presence of God; and it is further resolved that the ultimate teachings in this University shall always be consistent with these principles.
