HER STORY
In Loving Memory of Mother Marie Ferdinand
1942 – 2025
Marie Rene Guerrier, affectionately known as Etude, Maa, Madame Frankle, or Madame Boss. Marie was called to her eternal rest on June 8, 2025, at the age of 83.
Marie’s journey began on April 6, 1942, in Mirebalais, Haiti, where she was born to Marie Anna and Apane Guerrier. She was their first child of the family and carried that role with love, strength, and grace. Marie grew up surrounded by family and friends, attending school in her hometown of Mirebalais."
Marie later married Frankle Ferdinand, becoming Marie Rene Ferdinand. She became a beloved teacher at the very school she once attended as a child in Mirebalais. On December 3, 1976, she welcomed her only son, Obed Ferdinand, into the world a moment that forever changed her life.
In the early 1980s, Marie made courageous move to Boston, Massachusetts, with her husband, working tirelessly to create a better life for their son. Though it meant temporarily leaving Obed in Haiti with family, she remained determined to reunite their family and she did. Once Obed joined her in Boston, she cared for and supported him with unwavering love and dedication, encouraging him every step of the way. Her support extended not only to her son but to countless family and friends both in Haiti and the U.S. Many can proudly say, “If it wasn’t for Etude, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Marie worked for many years as a housekeeper at Susse Chalet Hotel. After the hotel closed, she became a bus monitor for Boston Public Schools, where she worked for 10 years before retiring. Her work ethic, humility, and strength left an impact on everyone she met
Marie had a warm, open heart welcoming everyone into her home as if they were family. Whether it was Obed’s friend, girlfriend, godchild, or neighbor, she treated them with kindness and care. When her son asked ‘Why do you do that maa?’ she would always reply, “We serve the Lord. We are God’s children.” That spirit of love and faith made her a mother figure to many.
One of Marie’s greatest joys in life was the birth of her granddaughter, Imani Ferdinand (Nie). The bond they shared was truly special Imani was her everything, and their love for each other was beautiful and unbreakable.
Marie loved going to church, reading her Bible, sewing, and taking long walks. Her gentle spirit, deep faith, and loving presence will be deeply missed. She is survived by her beloved son, Obed Ferdinand; her precious granddaughter, Imani Ferdinand; her siblings, Marie-Gisele, T-Marie, and Yabut, Dom; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends, coworkers, and neighbors from her apartment complex and church community.
Marie Rene Guerrier Ferdinand —Our Etude— was truly a blessing to all who knew her. Her legacy of love, faith, and strength will live on in our hearts forever.
