ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Paul Young
paul.young@uq.edu.au
Paul Young’s work explores the complex relationship between the digitisation of technology and human agency in the context of will. In an era of accelerating hyperdigitalisation, he examines how humanity’s traditional constructs are simultaneously expanded and eroded. His self-reflective practice draws on intuitive and digital processes to investigate not only the hyperemotionalisation of digital expression and the emotional disconnection created by reliance on technology, but also the reclamation of self through the deliberate incorporation of imperfection and vulgarity into digital art.
Young’s work often employs distortions and abstractions, conceptually representing subliminal post-human thought and suggesting that the notion of human identity in the 21st century is increasingly ambiguous. This evolving exploration builds on his extensive background in sound design, where he has pushed the boundaries of auditory storytelling through experimental collaborations, noise manipulation, and immersive audio-visual experiences. By transitioning into conceptual and 3D practices, he continues to challenge the shifting boundaries of identity and agency within a digitally mediated world.

SUCCUMB
Succumb is an evocative animation created by Paul Young in collaboration with Felicity Mohr (Flicachu), whose music and sound design form a powerful emotional counterpoint to the visual narrative. The piece follows an allegorical journey, charting the life cycle of a character that evolves through phases of birth, development, and eventual disintegration.
Crafted in Blender, the animation utilises striking visual transitions where forms emerge, transform, and dissolve. These moments of build-up and decay metaphorically reflect the impermanence of existence, evoking themes of identity, transformation, and the fragility of the human condition. The abstracted, fluid forms suggest both organic and digital worlds, creating a liminal space that challenges conventional boundaries between life and technology.
Felicity Mohr’s soundscape enriches the animation with layers of tension and release, reinforcing the emotional intensity of each stage in the cycle. Paul Young recorded, mixed, and mastered Mohr’s audio contributions, ensuring a seamless integration of sound and visuals that amplifies the immersive experience. Together, the visuals and music invite viewers to experience an intimate yet universal meditation on creation, change, and loss.
