AROUND THE DESK

JULES 2013

I

s the modern desk enough to allow us to work well? To Jules, desk accessories are held in satellite-like fashion. In fact, normal desks are fast crowded with objects. Jules gives access to more free space to work, study, draw or anything else you can think

of. It consists of 3 mobile arms each with their own “pencil pots”. These pencil pots are designed to house any small desk accessories such as usbs, keys, pencils, cables etc. Jules is fixed onto the side of the desk.

his basket can accommodate 3 apples which can transported and showcased. It is made only of a simple A3 sheet of paper. A nick in

the paper holds it closed. When it is moved, the apples remain secure. The paper is tightened around the apples preventing them from falling.

different dimensions, allowing for different balances and paces of swing. It’s made of brass and is fixed on a wall. When it’s finished, you just have to pin it again for the next use.

WAX & SEAL

VOLANT 2015

T

hese “flying objects” were born after a wax and seal workshop. Wax is used to seal a fold instantaneously and momentarily. It is also flexible and very useful in the aerodynamics of flying objects.

During the flight, its life is ephemeral. In fact too high a temperature would melt the wax, and too violent a gust would break it. These “flying waxes” are not unlike Icarus.

ag’Z as it is appropriately named, is intended for people who are really keen on reading magazines. It can find a place in any particular home, in the corridor, in the living room and or more intimately in a bedroom. Everything depends on how users want to display their magazines. Obviously we can also find it in places where there are magazines such as hotel halls or waiting rooms. My wall fixed magazine rack mixed different functions that I identified. Firstly you can jam them into hollow spaces. The tightening in width and depth allows

for the best positioning. Secondly you can jam the magazine open to mark your page and keep your place for the next time you read. Thirdly you notice that there are seven folds so one may be used for each day of the week. Users can order their periodicals. There is also a different fold in the middle of the top of the rack in which you can put special magazines. As we progress into the digital era, manual knowledge needs to be preserved, as do the magazines. My aim was to show that a unique piece of design can be created using very traditional but elaborate craftsmanship.

EKLIP’S S.O.B. Medals

or the special Olympics, the equivalent of the classic Olympic games for mentally disabled people, we had to create a medal family. Every position in all sports needed to be rewarded. So we had to design 8 medals with new colours for the medals going from 4th to 8th place. Also we had to include a clasp so the athletes could wear the medals around their necks. The

“moment is more important than the medal itself. I was inspired by solar eclipses that are short in duration but very intense. From this design, I made one medal that consists of 3 differently sized rings. Two of them are angled in opposite directions in order to create a 3D objects. The eclipse is frozen and the moment goes with the winners indefinitely.

ix, assemble and serve. That’s the aim of this family of tongs. All of them can be split to permit users to mix, stir salads, pastas, etc‌ Afterwards they can be joined for service of the meal. Both halves of the tongs are identical so one may be replaced if it is damaged or lost. These tongs are designed for production on an industrial scale with both halves being constructed from the same process. Their production is very simple; after laser-cutting, the pieces are folded on bearings to give them their final form. To finish, a rubber coating is applied to the extremities to ensure a good grip and a sort of personalization for customers.

EPAULE 2.0 3D printed joint

2014

W

e had to reproduce a human joint using 3D printer technology. Actually this recently developed process permits improvement in designer efficacy, but it must be mastered. I chose the shoulder joint. To make it I had to create 3 pieces in order to mimic the joint’s movement. The joint is assembled by interlocking the pieces.

The orange sphere represents the arm, the indented piece allows the rotation of the arm and the final piece is the collar bone. The whole piece is made with abutments to guarantee realistic human movements. This project has an emphasis on the form aspects of design which the designer has to consider.

ymbolise time and the clock. That is the mission of this project. Here the regular pendulum of the clock is distorted. Actually there are magnets and by their repulsion the repetitive tempo is broken, exchanged for a more random one. Magnets also permit the pendulum to maintain balance. The structure is made with a thin brass rod. To guarantee lightness, the pendulum is made of polystyrene. The whole pendulum can be activated by a little breeze. A motorised version also exists but it is not yet satisfactory.

hotovoltaic panels illustrate the development and utilisation of renewable energy. Their disadvantages are that they create visual pollution. For this project we have to use photovoltaic tiles to create a better roof as well as integrate it into the urban landscape. My project takes

place on the roofs of Brussels. Actually the architecture of Brussels is really different, so I want to match them with my tiles. For this I want to use ivy because it’s a really strong plant which can live in many places and it utilises photosynthesis to grow.

e-thinking the typical design of the beer pump. For this project we collaborated with Antoine, a leading company in the Belgian market and also well established in the French market. We have to respect and improve the company’s image whilst

emphasising the current branding. But how? Play on the interactivity of the pump with the customers? Focus the project on the branding? Restrict their presence on bars or conversely to accept it? It’s a work in progress.

athrooms are a necessity in every habitation. We use the bathroom every day to wash ourselves, freshen up, put on make-up etc… Partnered with a craftsman of our own choice, we have to design and make a bathroom accessory. Different ideas are currently in development. Should

I favour the emotional aspect over the functional aspect of the object? Should it be a familial or an industrial object? Should I reintegrate perhaps an old shaving tool ? I’ll have the answer in a few months !
