The Council on Foundations
Who We Are
The spirit of the Council on Foundations and its members is based on the earliest American values. Since this country’s founding, philanthropy has been a core value of its people. The Council can trace its founding to 1949, with the organization of the National Committee on Foundations and Trusts for Community Welfare.
The Council on Foundations is a membership organization that serves the public good by promoting and enhancing responsible and effective philanthropy. The Council’s members include more than 2,000 independent, family, community, public, and operating foundations, as well as corporate foundations and giving programs, in the United States and around the world. In 2002, these organizations held an estimated $289 billion in charitable assets and made grants of an estimated $17 billion.
For more than 50 years, the Council on Foundations has helped foundation and corporate grantmaking staff and board members in their day-to-day grantmaking activities. Through research, publications, conferences and workshops, legal services, and a wide array of other services, the Council addresses the important issues and challenges that face foundations and corporate community involvement leaders.
In an environment of significant change and potential, the Council on Foundations in the twenty-first century supports philanthropy worldwide by serving as
•A trusted leader: promoting the highest values, principles, and practices to ensure accountability and effectiveness in philanthropy;
•An effective advocate: communicating and promoting the interests, value, and contributions of philanthropy;
•A valued resource: supporting learning, open dialogue and information exchange about and for philanthropy; and
•A respectful partner: collaborating within a network of philanthropic and other organizations working to promote responsible and effective philanthropy.
The Council on Foundations’ work is guided by a set of enduring values:
• The field of philanthropy must uphold the public’s trust.
•Philanthropy is a cornerstone of a democratic society and is essential to the success of the nonprofit sector.
•Responsible and effective philanthropy depends on accountability, integrity, and respect for others.
•Inclusiveness and diversity in their many forms are fundamental to the responsiveness and effectiveness of the Council and the field of philanthropy.
The Council’s effectiveness requires an ongoing commitment to quality, communication, collaboration, discovery, reflection, and learning.
Inclusive Practices at the Council on Foundations
The Council adopted the following statement of inclusiveness in 1996, and in pursuit of these goals supports research, community outreach, fellowships, and other special programs:
The Council on Foundations was formed to promote responsible and effective philanthropy. The mission requires a commitment to inclusiveness as a fundamental operating principle and calls for an active and ongoing process that affirms human diversity in its
many forms, encompassing but not limited to ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, economic circumstance, disability, and philosophy. We seek diversity in order to ensure that a range of perspectives, opinions and experiences is recognized and acted upon in achieving the Council’s mission. The Council also asks members to make a similar commitment to inclusiveness in order to better enhance their abilities to contribute to the common good of our changing society.
