Perspectives from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees Welcome to the 2020-2021 season of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra! It is our 89th year serving this community, and it will be a year like no other. During the first half of 2020, the FMSO and the rest of the world have had to face the far-reaching effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to thank the entire FMSO staff, orchestra, and Board of Trustees for being proactive in their efforts to protect the health and wellbeing of each other by practicing social distancing, transitioning to online meetings, and making necessary accommodations for the musicians on and off the stage.

Our mission is “Enriching our community through the power of live music that educates, entertains, and inspires.” This year, we will look to achieve the “power of live music” portion leveraging the “power of technology” in ways we have not done so before, creating what we hope will be a unique concert experience for all of you. I am excited to get the most of out of our Reimagined season, and we hope you will enjoy the new format. As always, we welcome and encourage your feedback as we learn and navigate these uncharted waters.

I would also like to thank all of you, our patrons, volunteers, donors, and sponsors, who help keep arts organizations like the FMSO alive in this community, especially during these challenging times. In my tenure on the Board I have heard many, many stories of how the FMSO and music in general have impacted or even changed people’s lives. Perspectives from the Music Director The last time “life as we know it” was so abruptly altered due to a pandemic was over a hundred years ago; so, for most of us this is pretty new territory to navigate.

In the performing arts—where physical communication in real time is part of our raison d’etre—have we been dealt a death blow? I maintain, emphatically, no.

For the foreseeable future during this season we will use the parameters of physical distancing, coupled with today’s technology, to provide you with some marvelous music, including beautiful and powerful distillations of great orchestral masterpieces, as well as presenting works that both highlight the various sections of our orchestra or simply use a smaller one. There are many, many works—from the classics to the present—that fall into these categories.

Along with slightly larger ensembles playing some of the great classics, the remaining programs will include some spectacular works for more unusual instrumental combinations, as well as music by under-represented composers. This is not just a nod to diversity but high time to embrace it, as the quality of the music itself will reveal.

This season we have an authentic opportunity to explore the myriad works that lie outside those suited to the “standard-sized symphony orchestra.” Despite the relatively small number of FSO musicians on the stage at any one time, I am confident that you will not feel cheated.

Perspectives from the Executive Director The global pandemic has taken a huge toll on the performing arts. Musicians want very much to perform for live audiences, and patrons enjoy hearing live music.

Because of the pandemic, of course, live concerts simply are not possible these days.

And yet, the importance of music in our lives has never felt more present. The arts are inextricably intertwined with everything we do in life, and I would say that music is at the top of the list of the arts we miss the most. People sang when the Berlin Wall fell.

What is the most famous piece of art in the world? Is it Michelangelo’s David? The Mona Lisa? Or maybe the opening refrain of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony? I know what my answer is.

Thank you for recognizing the importance of music in your own life, and in the fabric of the F-M area. We are proud to make this area a better place to live and work, and we are delighted to be making music again. One year ago, no one thought of reimagined Masterworks concerts, with an orchestra of only 15, performed before no audience, with the “concert” being sent to your computer, tablet, or smart TV. The creativity of Music Director Christopher Zimmerman and the commitment of our talented musicians have overcome the obstacles thrown at us.

CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN MUSIC DIRECTOR

Christopher Zimmerman has served as Music Director of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra since 2013. Reviewer John Lamb wrote, “Christopher Zimmerman gave the…orchestra a workout Saturday night and gave the audience something to stand and cheer about.” He also serves as Music Director of the Fairfax (Virginia) Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Zimmerman was recognized as the winner of the American Conducting Prize in 2011, a new award given for nationwide performances by orchestral conductors, choral conductors, and a host of other categories.

His debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was followed by engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. He has since conducted orchestras all over the world, including the Prague Symphony, the Slovak Philharmonic, the Seoul Philharmonic, the Mexico City Philharmonic, the Caracas Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro, and the Shenzhen Symphony, to name a few. In opera he has worked as the assistant conductor for Carmen at the Nimes Festival and as assistant conductor for Salome at the Mexico City Opera where he was re-invited to conduct a full production of Gianni Schicchi the following season. His U.S. operatic debut conducting Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah won the National Opera Association’s First Prize as did Bright Sheng’s Song of Majnun, which he also led.

Zimmerman’s career has embraced teaching and working with student orchestras and conductors. In 1993 he joined the conducting faculty at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati where he was Music Director of their concert orchestra, and in 1999 he was appointed as Fuller Professor of Orchestral Studies at the Hartt School as well as Music Director of the Hartt Symphony. A much sought-after clinician and pedagogue, Mr. Zimmerman continues to teach at workshops and festivals around the world.

Mr. Zimmerman graduated from Yale with a B.A. in Music, and received his Master’s from the University of Michigan. He also studied with Seiji Ozawa and Gunther Schuller at Tanglewood, and at the Pierre Monteux School in Maine with Charles Bruck. Zimmerman served as an apprentice to Andrew Davis and the Toronto Symphony and in Prague, as assistant conductor to Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

TIMOTHY NELSON VIOLA

Timothy Nelson is currently Principal Violist with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and the orchestra teacher at Fargo South High School. He received a BM degree from the University of Wisconsin in Superior, and an MM degree from the Juilliard School, with emphasis in viola performance. For the ten years preceding coming to the Fargo-Moorhead area, he was principal violist with the Arkansas Symphony in Little Rock, and violist in the Quapaw String Quartet, the members of which formed the full-time salaried core of the Arkansas Symphony.

Mr. Nelson has played in the viola sections of many orchestras, including the Duluth Superior Symphony, the Madison (Wisconsin) Symphony, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Queens Philharmonic.

SONJA BOSCA-HARASIM VIOLIN

Concertmaster Sonja Bosca-Harasim is Associate Professor of Violin and Viola at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. Additionally, she is also on the faculty of the North Star Chamber Music Festival and Symposium at Concordia College, Dakota Chamber Music, International Music Camp, Soiva Music Camp, and frequently works with the violinists and chamber groups at the Fargo-Moorhead Area Youth Symphony and the Northern Valley Youth Orchestra.

Sonja has maintained an active performing career locally, nationally, and internationally as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician, including performances with the Detroit Symphony, The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She has been featured on MPR’s “Regional Spotlight” and Houston Public Radio’s “The Front

Row,” and is dedicated to the performance of new music and works by underrepresented composers. She completed her undergraduate studies with David Updegraff at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and attended Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, studying with Kenneth Goldsmith and Cho-Liang Lin, where she received her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. Sonja resides in Fargo with her husband, Ryan, and their son, Sebastian.

JEREMY BREKKE TRUMPET

Jeremy Brekke is Associate Professor of Trumpet at North Dakota State University. He received a B.S. in Music Education from NDSU, and an M.M. in Trumpet Performance and a Doctor of Arts in Trumpet Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where he studied with William Pfund.

Mr. Brekke has performed with the Greeley Philharmonic and Louisiana Philharmonic, and with various big bands including the John Mahoney Big Band and the Jazz Arts Group of Fargo/Moorhead in lead and solo capacities. He was the winner of the 2001 Rocky Mountain Concerto Competition, and has been the featured soloist with numerous bands and orchestras, including The John Philip Sousa Honor Band. He has performed with Wayne Bergeron, Allen Vizzutti, Rex Richardson, Wycliffe Gordon, Manhattan Transfer, Platters, Temptations, Kurt Elling, Placido Domingo, and Stanley Drucker.

Jeremy currently performs throughout the upper Midwest with the NDSU Faculty Brass Quintet, South Dakota Symphony, Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome, and various jazz groups, and teaches at the International Music Camp. He was awarded the 2013 Outstanding Creative Activity Award by the NDSU College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and is an active clinician and adjudicator. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

STEPHANIE CARLSON OBOE

Stephanie Carlson is Instructor of Oboe at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. She currently performs with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and the Concordia Wind Quintet, which has performed for thousands of K-12 students throughout Minnesota since 2015 as part of the Minnesota Class Notes Artists program. She has also performed with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera, Symphony Orchestra Augusta, the GAMAC Chamber Orchestra, and the Southern Wind Quintet, among others.

Ms. Carlson holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Georgia, where she studied oboe with Dwight Manning and Reid Messich. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio, as a student of Elizabeth Camus of the Cleveland Orchestra. In addition to her appointment at Concordia, she has served on the faculty of the Atlanta Music Academy, the Encore! Music Camps, the International Music Camp, and as a coach for the Minnesota All-State Band Camp.

Her debut recording project, Piper of Dreams: The Oboe and English Horn Music of Ruth Gipps, is due to be released in 2021.

CASSIDY MORGAN BASS

Cassidy Morgan has been a member of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra since the fall of 2018. In addition to his position in the bass section of the FMSO, he is a highly sought-after freelance musician, and has performed with some of the nation's top orchestras and chamber ensembles across the world. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Cassidy began playing the double bass in the sixth grade. Cassidy's principal teachers include Bruce Bransby, Richard Barber, Robert Oppelt, Albert Laszlo, and Steve Benne.

Mr. Morgan also has a passion for historically informed performance practices; in the spring of 2016, he received his doctorate from the University of Maryland-College Park; his dissertation was on the Viennese violone, the contrabass instrument used in Vienna during the late eighteenth century. Cassidy lives in the Twin Cities with his wife, Jessica. When not performing music, Cassidy maintains a small private teaching studio, enjoys traveling (when able), and repairs stringed instruments.

TYLER WOTTRICH PIANO

Tyler Wottrich is an Associate Professor at NDSU’s Challey School of Music, where he created a graduate collaborative piano program and serves as artistic director of the NDSU Chamber Music Festival. Tyler is the recipient of the Emerson String Quartet’s Ackerman Prize for chamber music and has served on the collaborative piano faculty of the Banff Centre. An alumnus of Ensemble Connect, ensemble-in-residence at Carnegie Hall and Juilliard, Tyler performs regularly with faculty members at the Paris Conservatory, the Royal Conservatory of Music in London, and the Juilliard School.

Additionally, Mr. Wottrich has worked with such composers as John Luther Adams, John Corigliano, Georg Friedrich Haas, Jocelyn Hagen, Richard Hundley, David Lang, Libby Larsen, Missy Mazzoli, Dominick Argento, and Bright Sheng. Tyler accompanied mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski in winning 2nd Prize at the 2017 Das Lied International Song Competition, the Richard Tauber Prize for the best interpretation of Schubert Lieder, and the Ralph Vaughan Williams Society Prize for the best interpretation of a British song at the 2017 and 2019 Wigmore Hall International Song Competitions.

PROGRAM NOTES Takemitsu: Night Signal, for antiphonal brass Tōru Takemitsu (1930-1996) is one of Japan’s most well-known composers. After serving in the Japanese national military during WWII, Takemitsu was exposed to Western classical music and began composing at the age of 16, indicating that, “After the war, music was the only thing.

Choosing to be in music clarified my identity.” For the early part of his career, he rejected the influences of traditional Japanese music, which reminded him of his unhappy period of military service. His later music, however, adopted some native Japanese musical features, blended with experimental characteristics reminiscent of Debussy, Schoenberg, Messiaen, and Cage.

Premiered in 1987, Night Signal is the second movement in Takemitsu’s two-part work, Signals from Heaven. Night Signal features antiphonal brass—essentially a conversation between the two groups of instruments. A contemplative yet powerful opener, Night Signal evokes not only a sense of the day at its close, but anticipation for what the night will bring.

Rouse: Ogoun Badagris, for percussion ensemble Christopher Rouse (1949-2019) was drawn initially to American classic rock music, but also was nurtured in the classical tradition by his mother. His appreciation of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony led to the exploration of many other genres and styles, and eventually to a successful career as a symphonic composer with numerous orchestra commissions. Rouse’s aim was to express the varied emotions of music rather than to be associated with a particular style. Ogoun Badagris (1976) elicits such an emotional response, as might be expected from a work named after the most terrifying of Haitan Voodoo gods.

The work makes use of traditional Haitian drumming patterns and dance influences. Though the instrumentation is stylized to mimic those used in Haiti, Ogoun Badagris is not merely an arrangement of a traditional Haitian piece. Rather, the style is fused with traces of American rock and Western classical music. Dynamically intense, heavily accented, and sometimes seemingly improvised, Ogoun Badagris is suggestive of the drums of war, the dance of worship, and perhaps even the preparation for sacrifice.

Still: Mother and Child, for strings Mississippi native William Grant Still (1895-1978) was one of the most important composers of the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural reawakening of African American arts in the 1920s and 1930s. He was not only the first African American composer performed by a major symphony, but he was also the first such composer to conduct a major symphony playing his own work. With over 200 compositions in nearly all classical genres, his nickname “The Dean of Afro-American

Composers” is well deserved. However, Still’s musical style was not limited to traditional classical music. While studying composition, he also performed with and composed for influential jazz musicians such as the “Father of Blues,” W. C. Handy.

William Grant Still was also involved in film music, though he famously refused an offer to work on the music for Stormy Weather because he did not agree with how the studio treated and depicted people of color.

Premiered in 1944, Mother and Child was originally the second movement of the Suite for Violin and Piano. However, it became not only a popular piece for symphonic audiences, it remained one of Still’s personal favorites. Its lush textures and rich orchestral colors seem to be the perfect musical depiction of the work that inspired it, Sargent Johnson’s “Mother and Child:” https://www.sfmoma.org/artwork/36.5991/ Britten: “E.B.B,” from Two Portraits for String Orchestra Edward Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was one of the most renowned and influential British composers of the 20th century. His mother, an amateur musician, hosted musicales in their home, gave Britten his first piano lessons, and hoped he would become the fourth “B” after Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Britten eventually studied composition at the Royal College of Music and developed his own distinct style after hearing late romantic composers such as Debussy and Ravel. Although he built a successful and acclaimed career in both the United States and England, Britten was notoriously sensitive to outside criticism.

“E.B.B.” is the second movement of Two Portraits for String Orchestra (1930). The first movement and unfinished third movement were named for early classmates, and this second movement is Britten’s musical self-portrait. It features an extended solo for Britten’s own instrument, the viola. As the other strings are added, the viola line becomes more chromatic, sensual, and dramatic. It was only in 1997, over twenty years after Britten’s death, that this self-portrait was published and performed. The evocative solo has quickly become an important part of the viola’s orchestral repertoire.

Pärt: Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, for strings Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (b. 1935) studied music at his hometown’s music school at age seven, served in the military where he played oboe in the band, and eventually graduated from the Tallinn Conservatory. Living in a Soviet-occupied country under Stalin forced Pärt to develop an individual style, as exposure to outside music was limited. His experiments with 12tone composition provoked a negative political reaction, and shortly thereafter Pärt entered an extended period when he composed very little. Instead, he studied religious mysticism and the contrapuntal complexities of vocal works from the Medieval and Renaissance periods.

He emerged from this period having developed a new compositional technique, which he called “tintinnabula,” after the Latin for a small bell with religious associations. The style is characterized by two distinct musical lines, the first moving stepwise and the second arpeggiating the tonic triad—in this case, A minor. Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten (1977) is an early example of the technique and also features a complex canon.

The work opens with silence, the mystical tolling of the bell, and then slowly unfolds in complex layers of strings, based nevertheless on the simple two-line approach described above. The result is extraordinarily moving, mysterious, and contemplative. As the title suggests, Pärt dedicated the work to Britten, whom he had greatly admired but never met.

Takemitsu: Day Signal, for antiphonal brass The second part of the program opens with the first movement of Tōru Takemitsu’s Signals from Heaven (1987). Like Night Signal, this movement also features brass groups in sequence and combination, and is in the tradition of Gabrieli’s works for antiphonal brass choirs at the beginning of the 17th century. Taken together, Night Signal and Day Signal represent the 20thcentury continuation of that tradition.

Debussy: L’après-midi d’un faune (arr. Schoenberg) Claude Debussy (1862-1910), though undoubtedly among the greatest of Western composers, was fortunate to have been born at the height of the French Romantic period on the outskirts of Paris, where his musical gifts were able to flourish. He was admitted at the unusually young age of ten to the Paris Conservatoire, where many notable French Romantic composers studied and taught. Debussy is often described as a programmatic “impressionist,” though many feel he is more of a “symbolist,” composing music which sets a mood rather than tells a story. Debussy is a master of molding instrumental timbres into musical colors that are evocative rather than narrative.

Nevertheless, the current work is in fact programmatic—that is, it features a story. Inspired by Stéphane Mellarmé’s poem “L’après-midi d’un faune,” Debussy’s first orchestral masterpiece (1894) seeks to loosely describe a faun during an afternoon of lustful pursuits of the water nymphs of the forest before falling asleep and only then realizing his desires. Though initially skeptical, Mallarmé reportedly attended the premiere and enjoyed Debussy’s musical depiction. The music exploits orchestral color with the very first notes of the flute, and provides a delicate contrast to the thick, antiphonal brass of the previous piece.

The arrangement by Arnold Schoenberg was created for a formal gathering of his fellow composers and musical literati in Vienna. That group arranged and performed chamber works and orchestral reductions for study and reflection. The present arrangement accurately reflects Debussy’s attention to orchestral color while offering a more intimate chamber music setting.

Respighi: Concerto a cinque, for solo violin, double-bass, oboe, trumpet, piano, and strings Perhaps most known for his orchestral Roman tone poems and his three suites of Ancient Airs and Dances, Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) was also an accomplished operatic composer and musicologist. He was born into a musical family and quickly became adept at piano and violin. When Respighi was 21 and playing viola in St. Petersburg, he met the famous Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, who became his mentor and friend. Much of Respighi’s orchestral technique can be linked to this tutelage. A scholar as well as a musician, Respighi could speak and read eleven languages, which facilitated his tours throughout Europe, South America, the United States, and Russia.

Respighi’s style is certainly tonal and neoclassical. He is among a group of Italian composers who signed a manifesto rejecting modern (20th century) compositional practices as mechanical and lifeless. One of the common features of neoclassical music is the reliance on traditional forms, counterpoint, and a small soloistic group along with the main ensemble, as in a concerto grosso.

Concerto a cinque (1933) is similar: Each of the five solo instruments provides its own distinct musical color, and all are supported by the strings. The work is substantial in scope and features a typical three-movement design. The influence of Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven can easily be heard here, reflecting the conventions of the late Baroque and early Classical periods.

THE FARGO-MOORHEAD SYMPHONY ENDOWMENT FUND The Cadenza Fund was established in 1981 to provide for the future stability of the Symphony. Since that time, many people have contributed generously to the fund.

Annual proceeds from this fund support the general operations of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. All three funds are ND Certified Endowment Funds, which qualify donors for a state income tax credit under current state law.

The Cadenza Fund

This is the major fund within the Endowment, which supports the general operations of the symphony. Our Endowment Policy states that 3.55 of a 3-year rolling value of the fund will be the automatic annual draw, with an additional 1.5% available through majority vote of the Board. No further draws on the principal or earnings may be made.

Established in 2019, the new Kids in the [Concert] Hall Fund is an Operating Reserve Fund which will provide funding for current and expanded programming and educational services for children, students and families throughout the region. Current programs include the new FAMILY CONCERT at the Fargo Theatre and the annual Young People’s Concerts performed during the school day for all area fourth-graders. Future programming may include additional performances, FMSO musicians in area schools, and more.
